Welcome back! Today's Friday Nooner effectively marked a season premiere, as well as the beginning of a new chapter for the show sans longtime co-host Pete McEntegart. GrepBeat Godfather Joe Colopy and Melissa Crosby of Colopy Ventures brought the show back on air, comfortably seated in front of the awesome new mural at HQ (special thanks to summer artist-in-residence Xiomara Colopy!). Joe and Melissa provided a general update on all things GrepBeat, a few takes on the news, and a bit of banter. Then they welcomed the season's first guest, Chris Geiss of Seguno, who last Nooner‘d with us in 2021. Watch the full episode on LinkedIn here or on Facebook here.
Guests Include: - Jeff Kolpack, Forum of Fargo-Moorhead - Chris Geiss, Dakota Junior Golf Director

This episode is a great chat with Greg White. If you are already familiar with Greg, you will probably know him as a part of the announcing team for MotoAmerica and as the host of the Greg's Garage Podcast with co-host Jason Pridmore. And if you follow him on social media you have heard of his Greg's Ride 2 the Races. There's also lots of other cool stuff that he does now and has done in the past that we cover. I've been wanting to interview Greg for quite a while since I am a big fan of his podcast and also see him often on TV and Live+ doing commentating and play by play analysis the MotoAmerica road racing series. When I saw his annoucement for Greg's Ride 2 the Races it was the kick in the ass I needed, since I realized...what is cooler than talking about riding motorcycles to go see motorcycle racing? We talk about how Greg's Ride 2 the Races got started, how Greg got into motorcycles and racing, how he transitioned from racing to motorcycle racing TV production and announcing and lots of other stuff...the Kyle Wyman Panera Superbike reveal, his lap around VIR on the Ducati Multistrada V4S, the MotoAmerica Mission King of the Baggers Class, how motorcycle road racing is all about the tires, and much more! The podcast MPC team members got together using Zoom and we talked all things Motorcycle Podcasters Challenge (MPC) related. Oh...and we also talked a little about the Loud Pipes! and Throttled podcasts coming to a close, navigation devices, tools and apps, touch sensitive gloves and add-ons, cruise control, being your own "back seat driver", front suspension including the BMW Telelever, and finally the team gives me their ideas on the podcast and what directions I should take the podcast next. Since I have not released a podcast episode in quite a while, AND since we have our own podcast team for the Motorcycle Podcasters Challenge (MPC) this year, I thought it would be cool to do a podcast episode for each week of the MPC. The podcast team members got together using Zoom and we introduced ourselves to the listeners, talked about the MPC, what we like and don't like about it, the cool places we have visited so far, what are objectives are for the challenge, we answered questions, pondered if there are any "gentlemen's rules" for the competition and encourage other riders to join in on the fun next year...assuming the MPC keeps going for at least another year...and who knows, maybe these podcast episodes will help make that a reality! We also touch on some other topics like "there's no crying in motorcycles" and that maybe the MPC Flash Challenges should involve doing wheelies and stoppies. :-) Oh...and we talk a little about the Harley Davidson Pan America. And we have some adult beverages in honor of the Loud Pipes podcast, which recently published its final episode. This episode is a great discussion with Scott Rybarik. Scott works to support the expansion of the sport of motorcycling in more ways than I can count...including as a guest instructor for the Yamaha Champions Riding School. As Scott says in his bio, "the motorcycling community has become an extension of my family, and I want to help others become better, safer and faster riders." Scott and I talk about lots of topics related to motorcycles and motorcycling, including community, running clubs, managing risk and performance, how people learn new skills, taking kids racing, the lessons of motorcycling that relate to other parts of life, modern motorcycle electronics and tires and are they too good, and much, much more. This episode is an awesome chat with motorcyclist Andrew Goodman about his new book "Shiny Side Up - From First Ride to Fast Rider." Andrew started riding motorcycles in his early twenties. Finding a more effective way to commute through rush hour London traffic was the excuse, but in learning to ride he fulfilled a lifelong goal. He hit the ground running and got hold of anything and everything he could find to help him understand his strange and beguiling new hobby, and a more experienced mentor to show him the ropes. Ever since he can remember, Andrew has been fascinated with how things work. He eventually became a chartered mechanical engineer and has applied his knowledge of engineering and physics to his riding progression; whether servicing bikes, commuting, or track riding. So, join us as Andrew and I talk about all things motorcycle! Max Vandenbrouck is going racing in the MotoAmerica Junior Cup series this season! This episode is a great chat with the father and son duo of Max and Brian Van from SportbikeTrackGear.com, otherwise known as STG, and we talk all things motorcycles and racing, including how STG got started, STG's sponsorship of MotoAmerica racers, and the progression of Max Van from track day rider and club racer to professional racer. By the release of this episode, Max has already completed his first MotoAmerica round at Barber Motorsports Park where he finished 10th and 11th, and he, his family and team are getting ready to head to Indianapolis Motor Speedway where Max will be competing in the second to last round of the MotoAmerica season this coming weekend. This episode is a great chat with Manny Bastos, who got his motorcycle and track day instructor training with Yamaha Champions Riding School (YCRS), and now runs his own rider training school, Riders Academy, at New York Safety Track (NYST). I recently completed the Riders Academy and plan to do many more track days at NYST. We talk about track days, NYST, Yamaha Champions Riding School (YCRS), my recent training at California Superbike School (CSS), and why people do track days and how any street rider can benefit from learning to ride on the track. And we cover a lot of other topics including track riding, street riding, wheelies and more! This episode is a great chat with Melissa Paris. Melissa is a self-proclaimed street squid who snuck her way into racing and is currently the lead technician for the Altus Motorsports team which races a Suzuki GSX-R 1000 in the MotoAmerica Stock 1000 series with rider Cameron Petersen on-board. We start off talking about the team’s very successful weekend at PittRace, where rider Cam won both Stock 1000 races. We also talk about how Melissa got into motorcycles in college and made the progression from street rider, to track rider, to club racer, and then to mechanic, professional racer, and team owner. And we discuss relationships and motorcycles, including a little bit about her son Hawk and her husband Josh Hayes and how banging handlebars with your spouse on the track can be very therapeutic and great marriage counselling! This episode is a great discussion with Alex, Henry and Ian, the founders of Brake Free. Brake Free's first product, which they describe as "The Smart Brake Light For Your Helmet", is a device that easily mounts to the back of your helmet and provides a third brake like, similar to the ones you see on all cars today. Brake Free requires no external wiring, and has built in circuitry to sense when you are light braking, hard braking, engine braking, and so on. The goal is to make you more visible on the road and to help avoid one of the most common accidents for motorcyclists...being hit from behind by another vehicle. I am a Brake Free customer myself, and was backer #646 for the Indigogo campaign that they started to fund development of the product. We talk about how the idea for Brake Free came about, what was involved in developing the product and getting it perfected, what each member of the team has contributed to the product, and lots of other motorcycle topics. Check out the Facebook Live video on my Facebook page if you want to see the product and some of the other cool stuff we show during the interview. If you want to get your own Brake Free, use my affiliates link. You will get $10 off your purchase and also help support the podcast! This episode is a great discussion with John Casebeer, owner of Motool and inventor of the Slacker Digital Suspension Tuner. John raced motorcycles in the 1980s on motocross circuits and in the dessert. After John lost some friends to racing accidents, his dad pulled the plug on his racing aspirations, and John went to technical school and eventually built an Information Technology company. After 20 years of touring the country, playing in hardcore punk rock bands as a sideline, John decided it was time for a new hobby and decided to get back into motorcycles. At that point he found himself riding four-cycle dirt bikes, which behaved much differently than the two-cycle dirt bikes that he grew up around. One of the things that plagued him was not having a simple and efficient way to set up, change and monitor the sag on his race bikes. He tried some tools that were out on the market, but not being satisfied with what he found, he set out to design a new suspension sag measurement tool which allowed the rider to accurately measure the sag without the need for friends to hold the bike, lift the bike and take the needed measurements. Thus, the Slacker digital suspension tuner was born. After various trials and tribulations, and four different versions, John now has the tool he dreamed about having so many years ago. Over the last several years, John has shipped over 18,000 Slacker units and continues to innovate the product as well as develop new products for the motorcycle recreational and racing industries. This episode is a chat with Eric Swahn from Eric Swahn Racing. Eric is an amateur racer who has done a lot of racing at the club level and really loves it. He also has quite an entrepreneurial streak and started selling merchandise online through eBay as a kid. Since motorcycle racing is a very expensive sport, unless you have lots of sponsors backing you, Eric decided to put his racing on hold for a little while as he focuses on building his online motorcycle gear and parts store. Right now, he operate his online store part time in addition to his regular day job, but his goal is to build his store up to the point where it not only supports him, but also provides the extra cash he needs to continue with his passion for motorcycle racing. This episode is a great chat with MotoAmerica racer Kaleb De Keyrel who joins me to discuss his recent back to back wins in Twins Cup races 1 and 2 at the opening round of the MotoAmerica season that was held two weekends ago at Road America in Wisconsin. We talk about the race weekend and the activities leading up to his victories as well as how he got himself and his Yamaha FZ07 ready for racing this year, including with some help and coaching from this year’s World SBK rookie, and previous MotoAmerica racer, Garrett Gerloff. We also talk about the unusual circumstances of being at motorcycle races held under the restrictions required because of the current COVID-19 pandemic. And we talk about Kaleb’s prior racing experiences, his recovery from a serious crash at an AFM race event at Thunderhill Raceway Park in 2019, and also the YouTube channel and videos that he and his girlfriend produce together to help promote motorcycle road racing and MotoAmerica. Stay tuned as I will be doing as many of these podcast recordings as possible using Facebook Live on Wednesday nights at 8 pm ET and I will of course continue to make the audio portion available via this podcast. Hot Mic with Dom Izzo from Monday, June 1, 2020. The show includes Forum Columnist Mike McFeely, MSUM Co-Defensive Coordinator Carlton Littlejohn and ND Spring Golf Championships Director Chris Geiss.
This episode is a special show in which MotoAmerica Twins Cup racer Chris Bays joins me and leads a really informative and entertaining discussion with his Twins Cup racing buddies, who of course also happen to be his competitors, Robby Cichielo Jr., Jason Madama, Jackson Blackmon and Cooper McDonald. We talk a little about each rider’s racing resume, the specifications for Twins Cup bikes and the models that are most commonly used, the riders to watch this season, and each racer’s predictions for who is going to be up on the podium this weekend at the season opening round at Road America in Wisconsin. I think this discussion really helps to highlight how the sport of motorcycle racing can simultaneously foster great friendships in the paddock and awesome competition out on the track once the flag drops. It also provides some insights into how a motorcyclist who is interested in becoming a professional motorcycle road racer can get started in the MotoAmerica Twins Cup series. This episode is an awesome chat with Miyouko Wu, who makes her living as a nurse specializing in wound care, but who also spends many of her weekends as a track day rider and amateur motorcycle racer. Miyouko started riding motorcycles on the street in 2015, started doing track days a year later, and with the encouragement and support of some very good track friends, including Dave Moss from Dave Moss Tuning, started club racing in the AFM, the American Federation of Motorcyclists. Miyouko also recently started her own social media channel, “Miyouko Moto", to help support her passion to encourage and support more people, especially women, to try motorcycling, track day riding and racing. This episode is a great chat with Darren Waite, who not only is a fellow motorcyclist, but used to club race motorcycles in Australia, and has worked in the motorsports industry for 25 years. Darren is responsible for bringing the racing, track riding, motocross, adventure and street riding products of Italian based Forma Boots to the Australian and the US markets. We talk in depth about the Forma Ice Pro boots that I recently purchased for street and track riding, the technology behind them, why they are used by MotoGP racer Danilo Petrucci, and how Forma’s technology and approach to boot design, development and manufacturing is applied to the products they supply for all disciplines of motorcycle riding. This episode is a cool chat with Jordan Long from J.L. Unlimited. Jordan is a motorcycle enthusiast, club racer, track day coach and motorcycle podcaster. We cover everything from how he got started riding, to how he found riding again when he was in the Navy stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii, and how he eventually got hooked on racing his Yamaha R6 at the club level. We talk quite a bit about MotoAmerica, and the prior history of motorcycle road racing in the US, with the AMA Pro Series and the days when Daytona Motorsports Group (DMG) ran professional motorcycle road racing in this country. We also talk about his 9-year-old daughter’s interest in motorcycles and how he is looking to get her set up with an Ohvale GP-0. And we end off speculating about when the COVID-19 pandemic will be better under control, and when we might expect to return to some sense of normalcy regarding track days and road racing...and we reflect on how lucky we are that the MotoAmerica road racing series takes place in a single country, and that it will be much easier for the organizers to get things back up and running than it will be for the international based series like MotoGP and WorldSBK. This episode is a great discussion with Jon DelVecchio, a family-man and high school educator who also owns the Street Skills LLC motorcycle school that he founded in 2015, which is a New York State licensed driving school and an AMA chartered organization. Jon has combined his passion for motorcycles, his 20 years of riding experience, and his 10 years as a Motorcycle Safety Foundation Rider Coach to build his motorcycle school and to develop his “Cornering Confidence” method of motorcycle street rider instruction. In his “Cornering Confidence” book, curriculum, and online course, Jon has taken to heart the MSF motto of "the more you know, the better it gets", to help riders enjoy their riding more, get better control of their motorcycle, and thus reduce rider anxiety and make them more successful riders on the street. His method is designed to get students up to speed, step by step, on trail braking and other techniques to make them safer riders in the corners. “Cornering Confidence” is self-paced education, with direct support from Jon as needed. This is a unique approach to motorcycle skills development which dovetails in with the other teaching methods and schools that you may already be familiar with. This episode discusses the experience that Gina and I had attending Daytona Bike Week right before the you know what hit the fan regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. We originally had plans to see the Daytona 200 and American Flat Track TT double header races that weekend at Daytona International Speedway, but for obvious reasons those plans did not quite pan out. So, we made the best of the situation, had a great trip anyway, and got to experience something we otherwise would not have. I also talk about meeting Todd McNabney from Heroic Racing Apparel in person and buying a pair of Forma race boots from him at a great price. I also discuss the #RideItOut campaign that some people are backing and my approach to motorcycle riding in these challenging times. Finally, I spend some time discussing a topic near and dear to my heart…and one that a couple months ago took up quite a bit of my time…and that was my “Quest to Find a Helmet that Fits Properly.” I have written a blog article about my experience discovering that the helmets I already owned did not fit properly, and how I set about getting a new helmet with a proper fit. That article will be released on my web site soon and will probably be the transcript for an upcoming podcast episode on the same topic. Tom admits he just ordered two electric bikes and a bike discussion ensues. News: We segue into an article about Energica selling more bikes in 2 months than all of last year and discuss whether this means electric bikes are turning the corner. Triumph’s announcement about moving their manufacturing to Thailand and Brazil Larry couldn’t resist the leaked pictures of the new BMW R18 bagger and cruiser. We discuss the benefits/drawbacks of baggers/cruisers. the article describes a Mission Impossible scenario. Topic: Are electronic riding aids unnecessary options or beneficial advances. Chris mentions Fast Eddie’s current preference for a bike without technology. Tom likes the “whiz bang crap” on his BMW 1200 GS but too many settings may be a problem. This episode is a great discussion with Todd McNabney, the owner and lead designer at HEROIC Racing Apparel, and his motorcycle racing buddy, Chris Onwiler, who in addition to being an accomplished racer, track day coach and writer, is also a customer and huge advocate of HEROIC’s motorcycle racing gear. I met Todd at the International Motorcycle Show in New York City last December, when I bought a pair of his HEROIC SP-R Pro racing gloves as the first item in my new kit of gear for doing track days this season. I was very impressed with Heroic’s products, the message behind their products, and their loyal customer base, and thought it would be cool to bring you the story behind HEROIC Racing and how the company got started. And for those listeners only interested in riding on the street, in addition to their products for the race track, HEROIC applies the same ingenuity and care that they put into protecting riders on the track into their line of motorcycle gear for street riders, such as their street gloves and Kevlar hoodie. This episode gave me a great opportunity to get to know former motorcycle racer and burgeoning motorsports cinematographer Gray Pham. Gray started racing motorcycles when he was 12 years old and had a successful racing career through 2017, including competing in the MotoAmerica KTM RC 390 Cup Series. After making it through a string of bad luck, including having to recover from a major racing-related injury, Gray decided to hang up his leathers for a while and focus on starting his college career. During his first year of college, he also started playing around with shooting video at some local motocross tracks. His videos started to get a lot of attention and, in the Summer of 2018, a former racing sponsor approached Gray about shooting some video of motorcycle racer Ashton Yates on his Kawasaki Ninja 400. As the saying goes, the rest was history. Gray formed his own video production company, GP Industries, and decided to put college on hold for a little while so he can devote his full attention and energy to his passion for video creation and further honing his skills as a cinematographer and visual story teller. All of which aligns with Gray’s intense passion to help support, promote and grow the sport of motorcycle racing in America, and led to the creation of his motorcycle racing documentary series "America Racing". In this episode I start by talking about why it's been 3 weeks since I released the last episode…a water boiler leak in our Levitt house, shopping for my new Arai helmet (and more importantly getting a good fit), and all the activities surrounding the holidays. I also thank my new podcast supporters and announce the new Podcast Supporter page on my web site and the various support levels. I revisit Shane Patilla's question on shopping for gear, and I talk about helmet standards and helmet shelf life as well as provide some guidelines on the basic gear a rider needs…helmet, jacket, pants, boots and gloves. I mention things to consider when shopping for gear, including close-out deals and counterfeits. And I discuss my New Year’s resolutions regarding the podcast and my own riding this year. I cover my first ride of the new year on the Isle of Man(hattan) ride. And I go over my plans for the podcast and my plans for California Superbike School, other rider training and Motojitsu. I cover my plans for the motorcycle races I want to attend in 2020 and end off with some tips on heated gear that fits snugly, avoiding hypothermia, and choosing and modifying gear so it is easy to use with your riding gloves on. In this episode I have a really cool chat with Robby Cichielo Jr, in which we discuss how he got into motorcycling, why he prefers riding on the track, and the amazing experiences he has had as an endurance racer, as a racer in the MotoAmerica Twins Cup Series, and as an instructor and coach for N2 Track Days. We also talk about how motorcycles are the great equalizer and how motorcycling brings people together from all kinds of backgrounds and all walks of life. The shared love of motorcycles and motorcycling seems to know no boundaries and melts away differences in gender, race, religion, nationality, economics and the other things that sometimes put up barriers between people. In a nutshell, when true motorcyclists put on their gear and throw a leg over their bike, they are all very much of the same heart and spirit, and they all share a very special bond, one with another. We talk about Robby's experience riding motorcycles, including starting on a Suzuki SV650 at age 14, about 13 years ago. He had a Suzuki GSX-R for a while and eventually bought back his original SV650, which then led to getting started racing in the MotoAmerica Twins Cup Series. We go over how Twins Cup is very much a builder series and how riders and mechanics take bikes like the SV650 and other street bikes which are really designed and intended to be daily commuters and turn them into race machines with souped-up motors and more torque. We also talk about how Robby had to learn how to race the SV650, as it's not a pure race bike and requires a slightly different technique. And we talk about Robby's experience in endurance racing as a member of the 4 Dudes on a Twin race team. I also mention that now that I have read quite a few books about motorcycles and riding technique, I decided it is time to put my understanding to the test and see how well I can apply what I've learned. That's why I want to start riding on the track, and why I recently signed up for the 2-Day Camp with California Superbike School at New Jersey Motorsports Park in May 2020. Robby talks about the fact that often it is easier to teach less experienced street riders good riding technique on the track, as they haven't developed a lot of bad habits that can be hard to get people to break. He sometimes runs into "beginner techniques" that are taught in some basic rider training classes that then have to be unlearned. On the same theme, we talk about how strider bikes have been a great improvement over the bicycles with training wheels that many of us had when we learned to ride on two wheels, as strider bikes are two wheel vehicles and behave like two wheel vehicles, so kids learn balance and counter-steering. Whereas tricycles and bicycles with training wheels behave differently and don't teach the skills needed to ride a two wheeled vehicle. Robby and I also touch upon how buying and owning good, quality riding or track gear is an investment in yourself! In this episode I answer an email from a listener who is looking to buy his first motorcycle and is looking for advice on how much to spend on his motorcycle gear. I take this opportunity to answer his question by discussing all the things I have learned recently about high end gear that is suitable for track riding, as I start preparing myself to start riding on the track in 2020. I cover the fact that I am facing the same dilemma that he is…how much do I spend? I discuss what I am learning about helmets, boots and track suits, and the approach I am taking to move ahead and decide what to buy. I also mention that I have decided that before I start getting very involved in doing track days, I first want to improve my riding skills, and learn how to ride properly on the track, by taking the type of training offered by the California Superbike School and Total Control Training. I also talk about the things I have learned about Shoei and Arai helmets and some special features of Dainese track suits and boots. I also share what I have learned regarding the design features that make a helmet safer and more effective in a crash. And I mention the importance of deciding how to dress for your ride before you get on the bike. In this episode I start out by reading the new mission statement for my podcast, and then look back over the podcast since its inception by reading the list of past episode titles and more importantly commenting on and giving my thoughts about each episode, what was significant about them, what they meant to me, and any updates I have on the topics they covered. If you have not listened to the back catalog of episodes this is a great way for you to find out which ones you missed that you might be interested in. Then you can queue them up to listen to in your favorite podcast app. Since the Thanksgiving holiday is approaching I thought it would also be appropriate to give thanks and talk about all of the people that I am thankful for regarding the sport of motorcycling that you and I love so much. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I enjoyed recording it. Happy Thanksgiving!!! In this edition of "15 Minutes of Motorcycles" I spend about 40 minutes (OK...the name is a little misleading ;-) ) reading listener email from the last edition and also about the Fieldsheer and Mobile Warming heated gear that I wear, so I can keep riding all year long on Long Island. I discuss the pros and cons of the jacket, gloves and glove liners I have, so you know some factors to consider if you are looking to buy or upgrade heated gear from these or from other manufactures. In this episode I talk with Dave Moss, the founder of Dave Moss Tuning (DMT). Dave started racing motorcycles in the late 1990s at the age of 35. He built his own race bike and spent a lot of time digging into the nuances of bike setup and researching motorcycles, their behavior, their design and the physics behind them so that he could get the most out of his own bike on the track. A lot of other track day riders and racers started coming to Dave for advice on how to set up their own bikes. The help that Dave started offering at that time continued to evolve and develop over the last 24 years, and Dave now has a web site and YouTube channel with over 1000 items of content related to motorcycle suspension, motorcycle setup and riding technique that runs the gamut from podcasts, to videos to written articles. Dave has an intense passion for helping riders of all experience levels get the most out of their motorcycles and their motorcycle riding. He has found that often simple changes to the setup of a motorcycle can lead to huge gains in rider comfort, rider performance and rider safety. Dave has developed many tools and techniques to help tweak and adjust a motorcycle so that it fits the rider the way a well fitted suit or glove fits your body. His advice, to anyone who will listen, is to first focus your attention on the ergonomics of your motorcycle, and making sure it fits you properly, suits your riding style and handles properly, before you invest in other things like exhaust pipes, chrome and engine modifications. In this episode I have a great discussion with Kristen Staggs who is a co-owner, along with her husband Eddie, of the Bohn Body Armor company. I have been using Bohn Body Armor for about two years now and I really like it for many reasons. It is basically like wearing a base layer, but it has pockets to hold the various pieces of armor close to your body. So, the armor always fits well and is held comfortably in place. Additionally, you can wear the shirt by itself, or you can wear the shirt and pants under regular street clothes for impact protection and some abrasion protection, or you can wear it under your other motorcycle riding gear to get even more abrasion protection. But once you have your Bohn Body Armor, you don’t need to add to or upgrade the armor in all of your motorcycle pants and jackets, nor do you have to be bothered moving your upgraded armor pads between the different garments that you own. And because they sell different base layer shells, you can use your Bohn Body Armor year-round. Since I really enjoy using my Bohn Armor, I thought it would be cool to have Kristin on the show to talk about their company, their products and how the Bohn Body Armor company got started in the first place. It’s a great product and a great story! In this episode I have a good old chinwag with Tony Sherriff, who did all types of motorcycle racing in the 1960s and 70s in New Zealand and Australia. Tony shares a lot of stories related to racing both on and off the track. We touch a little bit on how motorcycle technology has changed over the years, but much of what we discuss highlights the fact that while the motorcycles and the equipment have evolved over the years, the true spirit, adventure and excitement of motorcycles and motorcycle racing has definitely stayed the same…or maybe like a fine wine has gotten even better with age! In this episode I chat with MotoAmerica Twins Cup motorcycle racer Chris Bays and listener John Gardiner who won the MotoAmerica weekend pass that Chris and I make available via the recent give-a-way. As of this recording, John had not yet used the ticket, but was going to see the races in Pittsburgh, PA the following weekend. Since John had never seen any form of racing before, he had a lot of questions to ask about motorcycle racing and this get together was the perfect opportunity for Chris and I to answer them…Chris as the MotoAmerica racer…and me as the MotoAmerica fan. John did see the Championship of Pittsburgh and got to meet Chris in person. John had a great time at the races and sent me lots of photos and video while he was there. Without a doubt we now have a new motorcycle racing fan in our midst…which is a big win for Chris and I, and anyone else who wants to see the sport of motorcycle racing continue to grow! In this episode I talk with MotoAmerica Superbike racer Kyle Wyman who grew up in the Harley-Davidson dealership that was started by his grandfather in 1962. Both of his parents drag raced cars and motorcycles at the professional level, and he has been racing motorcycles since he was 8 years old. Kyle became a professional motorcycle racer at age 16 and he raced flat track for several years until switching to motorcycle road racing with his two younger brothers. Kyle has owned his own race team for many years and now Kyle Wyman Racing is fielding a Ducati Panigale V4 R in the MotoAmerica Superbike series, which Kyle is riding himself. Kyle has also been a motorcycle riding and racing instructor since 2014 and he recently started his own online motorcycle training school, KWR Coaching, which is open to riders of all experience levels. Kyle and I talk about his many years of motorcycle racing in different formats and how he came to form his own privateer racing team. We also talk a little bit about the 17 surgeries that he has had over the years as a result of the various crashes he has had in his racing career, but more importantly we talk about his racing gear and the ways in which good gear has protected Kyle in various crashes and in many cases reduced or eliminated injury. In this episode I talk with Tom Walker, also known as the MotoCoach, who is a certified Motorcycle Safety Foundation RiderCoach, a track day coach and enthusiast, and creator of his Corner College rider skills development training program. We talk about a recent accident he had on the track, his injuries and how his recovery is going, and the effectiveness of his gear in this high-speed crash. We also start the conversation to cover the various things that I need to do to get myself and my bike ready to start doing track days in the not too distant future. In this episode I have a really cool chat with MotoAmerica racer Chris Bays who started riding motorcycles on the street about 15 years ago and has been racing motorcycles for the last 5 years at the club and professional levels. While he still likes the idea of riding on the street, Chris’ attention is fully focused on his racing these days. As he mentions in this episode, once he got bitten by the racing bug, he just couldn’t not race. I’m sure that anyone that has been bitten by the motorcycle bug will understand. Once you’re hooked, you’re hooked! This episode is also the perfect opportunity to announce this podcast’s official sponsorship of Chris Bays and the Number 621 RBoM Racing Suzuki SV650 in the remainder of the MotoAmerica Twins Cup Championship season. So, fire up the MotoAmerica Live+ streaming app or surf on over to Chris’ social media, or to my podcast’s social media and check out the podcast stickers on the racing livery for Chris’ bike. To help celebrate this new partnership, I am also excited to announce that Bays Racing and this podcast have teamed up to give away one free general admission ticket to see MotoAmerica racing live. The ticket can be used at one of the remaining MotoAmerica rounds in this 2019 season either in Pittsburgh, New Jersey or Alabama. Stayed tuned until the end of the episode for details on how you can enter to win. In this episode I chat with Wes Fleming who has been riding motorcycles for many years, has over a 100,000 miles under his belt, and also does a lot to support the motorcycle community through this podcasts, web site, YouTube channel and the work he does for the BWM Motorcycle Owers of America (also know as the BMW MOA). Wes recently purchased a 2019 Indian FTR 1200 S for his 50th birthday, and that’s what gave us the idea to get together for the first time and do an episode together. Although his new motorcycle is the focus of the episode, we spend a lot of time talking about the process of buying a new motorcycle, and topics like why Wes chose this bike, doing your research before you visit the dealer to make a purchase, choosing the right bike for you, buying a bike in its first model year, getting a bike fitted to you, financing, negotiating price, buying insurance, extended warranties, upgrading or changing an exhaust system and how that relates to emissions laws and performance, establishing a good relationship with your dealer and mechanic, the importance of having and reading the owner’s manual and service manual for your bike, engine break in, why having a chain drive can be a good thing, owning more than one motorcycle, and the like. We don’t have time to get into a lot of specific details on this motorcycle model, as we had a ton of fun discussing all of these related topics. But if you’d like to hear about the details of the Indian FTR 1200 S, let us know and we’ll do another episode together, with Wes having even more experience to talk about regarding this bike. I also talk about joining Gina on the Long Island leg of the Women Riders World Relay (WRWR) and some additional details about the Bohn Armor that I wear when I ride. In this episode I chat with professional motorcycle road racer Braeden Ortt who races a Kawasaki ZX-6R in the Supersport class of the MotoAmerica racing series. The 19 year old racer will be entering his sophomore year of college in the Fall and continuing his major in Chemistry, with future plans to be a plastic surgeon. In the meantime he is racing in two motorcycle racing series as well as enjoying other outdoor sports like snowboarding, wake surfing and jet skiing. Braeden and I talk about motorcycle racing in general, and in particular some of the challenges of the Corkscrew at the Laguna Seca Raceway, including his recent crash there during Sunday qualifying. Braeden survived the crash relatively unscathed and walked away with minor injuries. He expects to be able to race in the next MotoAmerica round, August 10-11 in Sonoma, CA. One of my goals in helping grow the sport of motorcycling, is to bring more attention to motorcycle racing, and in particular motorcycle racing in the US, with series such as MotoAmerica. Even if you don’t watch or follow motorcycle racing, or any form of racing, I think you will really enjoy learning from this amazingly talented and driven 19 year old racer from Canada. I hope you enjoy this interview as much as I enjoyed doing it! In this episode I chat with Dan Netting, entrepreneur, and founder of Life at Lean and The Track Academy. After having a couple of bad experiences on the track, including injuring himself in two crashes, and in the process wrecking two bikes, Dan decided to become a dedicated student of riding on the track and educated himself to become a very safe, talented track day rider, and now devotes his time to helping other track day enthusiasts accomplish the same things that he did. Dan and I also spend some time answering some questions sent in by a listener, about trail braking and tank slappers, and we go over what counter-steering is all about. I also give some listener shout-outs and discuss how many of my listeners are starting to form a good community around the podcast. And I share some tips I've developed on riding more comfortably on long stints on weekend trips including gear I use to make hot weather riding more bearable, how to protect yourself from impact and abrasion and still be comfortable, and how I stay comfortable in the saddle of my Kawasaki Z900RS. In this episode I talk with retired motorcycle racer, author, inventor, entrepreneur and founder of the California Superbike School, Keith Code. Keith and I talk briefly about his early days of motorcycle racing, and then how he came to start training riders in 1976 with his "Keith Code Rider Improvement Program". Keith goes over the fact that no one was doing motorcycle coaching at the time that he started his program. At first he wasn't sure if he could teach others as he didn't consider himself to be a very good student. But after doing the Student Hat Course developed by L. Ron Hubbard, Keith found that he now understood the barriers that people run into when learning and studying a new subject. He also found out that not only could he learn, but that he had actually become a very good student, and that he also now had the understanding and communication skills to teach others as well. Keith personally trained and coached Wayne Rainey, one of the founders of the MotoAmerica motorcyle racing series, and winner of the Daytona 200 and three time winner of the 500cc World Championship. We talk about how Keith taught himself physics and engineering so he could understand the dynamics of how motorcycles work and apply that to help motorcycle racers and road riders improve their riding skills both on and off the track. All of this led to the founding and great success of the California Superbike School. The rest, as they say, is history and now celebrating its 40th year in operation, the school has 100 coaches and students around the world in 13 countries including parts of Europe, the Middle East and Asia, such as India, Scandinavia, Italy, England, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Taiwan, China and the Philippines. Keith has personally trained 130,000 riders and his school has trained 200,000 riders worldwide. In Keith's school, everyone improves, guaranteed. If someone feels they haven't improved, they are given additional training free of charge. Keith's school is currently coaching Rocco Landers who is currently leading the MotoAmerica Liqui Moly Junior Cup series. If you would like to learn more about L. In this episode I have a down-to-earth chat with Jae, who is the newest co-host on the Creative Riding Motorcycle Podcast. On a recent episode of Creative Riding, Jae talked about the motorcycle accident she had and how she is now temporarily out of work with a broken leg. As she is also an artist, she wants to use her artwork to help support herself and pay her medical bills while she is on the mend. So I reached out to her to join me on the show and tell her story. I also talk briefly about my riding in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Maryland this past weekend, and the special guest I interviewed last night for the my next episode. Hint...this guest wrote the book "A Twist of the Wrist." In this episode I give my thoughts, comments and reactions after test riding the Kawasaki Ninja 650, Versys 1000 SE LT+ and the Ninja ZX-6R during the Kawasaki Demo Truck Days at Maximum Motorsports in Riverhead, NY. I enjoyed riding all 3 bikes, but by far the Ninja ZX-6R was the stand out. I loved the power and performance and the quick up-shifter feature. Riding this bike definitely aligned with my desires to start doing track days. While I previously considered starting track days on a 300 to 400 cc bike like the Yamaha R3, now I'm thinking a supersport class bike like the 636 cc Ninja ZX-6R would give me something good to start out on with a lot of room to grow into as my skills, confidence and bravery develop. In this episode Gina and I interview Hayley Bell, the founder and the main driving force behind the Women Riders World Relay (WRWR), a worldwide pursuit "to ignite a global sisterhood of inspirational women to promote courage, adventure, unity and passion for biking from all corners of the world and do something that’s never been done before to this scale." I also share what I have learned so far from Keith Code's "A Twist of the Wrist" books and DVDs, discuss a new part I installed on my Z900RS, talk about a new Dainese jacket that could really help protect you in a crash, and give some details about a non-motorcycle podcast that I appeared on as a guest to help promote motorcycling to people that don't ride motorcycles. In this episode, John Gardiner IV (G4) joins me to give us a full update on how he likes his 2019 Yamaha Tracer 900 GT, and how he is progressing on his riding skills development and working on his Motojitsu belts. We find out how it was that John actually came to the conclusion that it was time to become a motorcyclist and buy his first motorcycle. We talk a little about negotiating when buying a new motorcycle from a dealer. John also talks about how his grandmother helped him out so that he was able to get all the gear and protection he wanted for himself and his motorcycle without having to wait several months as he originally had planned. We also talk about making minor motorcycle modifications...John installing crash bars on his Tracer, and Gina and I installing highway bars on her Indian Scout Sixty. John gives us details on the program he put together for himself to help him expand out on his riding activities as he gets more comfortable on his bike, and how repetition, practice and always having an abort plan in mind helps him feel safer and more at ease when riding. We also discuss working up to doing higher speeds and also dealing with wind and having improved reaction times the faster you ride your bike. We talk about the importance of developing good habits and routines...kind of like having a "preflight checklist" as is used by aircraft pilots...for your motorcycling activites. And we consider the benefit of look backing and learning from mistakes and goofs. Finally we weigh out the value of mixing training courses with practice, practice, practice. And we share our experiences working on our Motojitsu White Belts and how that is helping us obtain better control of our motorcycles and become more skilled riders. We also learn what made John decide to adopt the model name "Tracer" as the actual nickname for his bike. I also mention a little about DanDanTheFireman and how his mission dovetails with what Fast Eddie is doing with Motojitsu. In this episode, DanDanTheFireman and I have a nice chat and get down to the nitty-gritty of motorcycle safety and the importance of training and wearing proper gear to reduce the inherent risks associated with motorcycling. Having worked as an EMT for a little over 10 years, Daniel has seen it all when it comes to traffic accidents, in particular related to motorcycles. His passion is educating motorcyclists, especially beginning riders, on the things they can do to get better informed and better trained about motorcycling, to increase their chances of having a safe and rewarding future as a motorcyclist. DanDanTheFireman has over 92,000 subscribers to his YouTube channel, and is close to having 400 Patreon subscribers. So obviosuly there are a lot of people intersted in what he has to say! We talk about his experiences as an EMT, and the weekly live videos he does to analyze motorcycle accident videos for his listeners, so they can become more skilled at understanding motorcycle accident dynamics and how they can avoid accidents, and if necessary minimize the risks if they are involved in one. We also talk about the Accident Scene Management Course that Gina and I did two years ago and how that has made us more aware of accident risks, and more importantly what we can do to help save lives if we ever witness an accident. We also talk about Daniel's new Indian FTR 1200 and how Fast Eddie's Motojitsu motorcycle exercise program is helping both of us become better riders. In this episode I have a really cool chat with Justin Edson who I have come to know as a fellow listener of some other podcasts that we share an interest in. It is Justin's attitude towards life and his extensive experience riding and wrenching on motorcycles that gave me the idea to have him on as a guest of the show. We talk a little bit about Jack Daley, a great friend and riding buddy of Justin's, who unfortunately passed away a couple months ago, and we discuss why Jack was such an important part of Justin's life. In honor of Jack, we share a toast to him, and we dedicate this episode to his memory and legacy. We also talk about the 46 different motorcycles that Justin has owned and wrenched on over the years, and how his mission to help make great running, reliable and inexpensive used motorcycles available to new and experienced riders led to the formation of Jedz Moto. We also get into the ways in which motorcycling can be very fulfilling to the human soul and the fact that there seems to be a spiritual side to this amazing sport and hobby that we share and love. We end off discussing some tips for new motorcycle riders and things they can do to be successful and fulfilled motorcyclists. In this episode listener Tony Terribilini and I discuss several different topics which are pretty much summarized by the links below. Scan the links and you'll get a good idea of what this episode is all about! In a nutshell, we talk about his experience with millennials, how motorcycle marketing to the millennial and following generations needs to change, where we see growth opportunities, and the importance of helping keep existing motorcyclists in the community by making sure they are enjoying and getting the most possible out of motorcycling. In this episode I have a special guest, Greg Widmar (aka Fast Eddie), who not only is a very experienced Motorcycle Safety Foundation and Total Control Training motorcycle rider trainer and coach, but he has also developed his own Motojitsu Master Rider Training Program to help students and riders build their skills by doing a carefully laid out series of steps or "belts", similar to the systems used in various types of martial arts. Students are awarded various belts in sequence as they master the skills, ability and knowledge associated with each level of training and accomplishment. We also talk about Greg's 10 years of experience in the US Marines as a Marine drill instructor, and how that experience helped him build the discipline and work ethic that he now brings to his motorcycling and the training of other motorcyclists. Greg also shares a little about the 2 years that he spend in Iraq as a Marine and how that has shaped his outlook about other people and how it showed him that most people in the world are really good people who just want to live a happy and fulfilling life. We also talk about his new 2018 BMW S1000R and doing trackdays. In fact the day after this interview he was headed to the track to kick the tires on his new ride. Integrated with our discussion about motorcycling, motorcycle training and Motojitsu, are discussions about life in general, philosophy towards life, eduction, hard work and the keys to success and how all of these things tie into the sport of motorcycling that we all enjoy so much. I hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed doing this interview! In this episode John Gardiner IV (aka "G4") joins me to discuss his journey in becoming a new motorcycle rider and the also his adventures in shopping for his first bike. John found my podcast when he started searching the internet for help on getting started in this sport that we all love so much. So I was elated when John agreed to come on the show to discuss his own story, as one of my goals for this podcast is helping new people from all walks of life find the activity of motorcycling and helping them get a successful start in it. John is a Graduate Fellow at Penn State University and lives in central Pennsylvania and is now the proud owner of a brand new Yamaha Tracer 900 GT. We talk about his experience getting his license by doing the free motorycle training program offered in PA which is based on the Total Control training program developed by Lee Parks. We also talk about the steps he took to decide on the right motorcycle for him and also the things that can be done to better fit a motorcycle to the rider. And we cover what the beginning rider courses do and do not cover and also what a new rider should do after finishing a basic training course, to become more comfortable with their motorycle and with riding in general. These are steps that can make you safer, more confident and insure that you have years of enjoyable motorcycling ahead of you. We also talk about the clutch, the "friction zone" and "slipping the clutch" as well as an easy way to understand what counter-steering is. We wrap up by talking a little bit about electric bicycles and about model railroading and the podcast that John started to help get new people started in the world of model railroading. I recorded this one on my birthday! In this episode I explain the origin of the nickname "Old Man Slacker" that I have adopted, what it means to me, and why I adopted it. I also go over the different facets that I see as comprising this thing we call life and I introduce the subject of "Motorcycle Philosophy" and what that means to me. I talk about losing my dad and the influence that had on me and why I have dedicated my podcast to him. I give shout-outs to Jedz Moto and the Loud Pipes! podcast, and especially to my listeners, and I also cover some information about my audience. I mention Dianetics and recently becoming a trained Dianetics counselor and how that has shaped my views and approach to life and enabled me to effectively help others. Finally, I discuss how this episode has allowed me to fine tune and realign my thoughts about and my goals with this podcast. In addition to helping expand the field of motorcycling and helping bring in new motorcyclists, I want to use it to enhance and extend what is already being done by other motorcycle podcasts and introduce aspects of philosphy to help people get the most out of motorcycling and to increase their enjoyment of life overall. In this episode I have two special guests. Shana Sanderson, Executive Vice President of Operations for the Women Riders World Relay (WRWR). And her husband, Eugene Sanderson, who has been instrumental in supporting Shana in her day to day role in WRWR, and who also handcrafted the batons that are passed woman to woman in the WRWR Global Relay and the WRWR U.S. Ripple Relay. We discuss what motorcyles they each ride now and the motorcycles they started out on, as well as how they got started riding. We touch on Eugene's experience as a Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) RiderCoach. We also talk about the challenges and rewards related to working with, supporting, and being associated with WRWR, which has grown very rapidly beyond anyone's original expectations. And we consider the ways in which WRWR is helping to change the future for women, women motorcyclists, and motorcycling in general. And we discuss the construction of the batons, and the technology behind them, and the impressive amount of ingenuity and craftsmanship that Eugene put into creating them for WRWR. We also touched on the future of WRWR and how Shana and Eugene see it developing in the years to come. In this episode I have two special guests. My girlfriend, Gina Bratkowsky, joins me as my co-host and helps me interview Sarah Worthylake from the Women Riders World Relay (WRWR). Sarah is the Global Relay Moderator and the U.S. Ripple Relay Coordinator for WRWR. She started riding about 3 years ago, and her first and current bike is a Honda CBR600RR sport bike. Her fiancé got her interested in riding and she learned how to ride in the Motorcycle Safety Foundation's (MSF) Basic Riders Course (BRC). He rides a Honda CBR1000RR. We discuss how WRWR got started, its purpose and where the relay started and how far the baton has gotten so far. We also talk about the Ripple Relays that were created to help women participate if scheduling and other logistics do not allow them to join the main worldwide relay. We also talk about how men can help and support WRWR. Oh and we discuss the construction and technology contained in the baton! I hope you enjoy this episode and please do what you can to support WRWR and women riders around the world!
