Not many of us get to tick off ‘sailing around the world' off our dream to-do list. But our guests today, Brady Trautman and partner, Alex Blue, have been living their ultimate best life at sea for the last ten-plus years while creating video content for their business, Cruisers Academy. The adventure began with Florida natives Brady and his older brother, Brain, with whom he initially started the youtube channel, Sailing Vessel Delos, back in 2008. It wasn't until 2012 they received their first check from Youtube, which was basically ‘bear money.' Soon after, they joined Patreon. Eight sailors, filmmakers, and adventurers pile into a 48 ft sailboat with the goal of exploring and capturing the beauty of Svalbard, the northernmost settlement in the world, only 600 miles from the North Pole. The sailing expedition brings 24 hours of sunlight, dangerous glacial ice flows, and up-close encounters with polar bears, beluga whales, walrus' and much more! After 2.5 years of post-production and over 2000 hours of editing, it's time to bring YOU our biggest project yet!Alex, a media student running her film and photo company shooting on party boats across South America, joined the Delox crew in 2017 on a sail across the Atlantic to South Africa. Alex's valuable skills helped tell their story of adventure and friendships, dreams more skillfully. SV Delos has sailed 45 countries and over 70,000 ocean miles since 2008.Ever wondered what goes into making a documentary series? Well here's a behind-the-scenes look at how the 80 North Series was created! Andy Schell invited us to be on his podcast which was the perfect opportunity to film the chat, share some sneak peeks, and relive funny stories from our sailing expedition in the Arctic Circle.Finding your niche in the film or creative space, in general, can be a struggle, especially since it is becoming more and more competitive by the second. But the Delos crew modeled their business to service a niche audience and have created multiple revenue streams from sailing around the world and doing what everybody wants to do.Due to the COVID pandemic, Alex and Brady have halted sailing for over a year now. They have had to adjust production strategy by outsourcing editing and diversifying their output.Six months ago, the couple, along with a business partner, Sean, launched the Cruisers Academy---offering sailing lessons, charters, and they released a four-part docu-series, 80° North. It is a compilation of two years worth of videos honoring the beauty of the sea and their journeys. Brian bought SV Delos in May of 2008. At the time he had no intentions of documenting his life with YouTube Sailing Videos, but as sometimes happens one thing leads to another and here they are 45 countries, 70,000+ ocean miles, and over 200 YouTube Sailing Videos later. The decision to sell everything, buy a sailboat, and set off on a grand adventure was a defining point in their life. In this episode we chat with Brian and Karin about their sailing story, how you can make it possible for you, how to build a great youtube channel, their scariest moments, being parents on board a sailing boat and much much more. Why would one quit a perfectly good job, sell everything they own, buy a sailboat, and set off around the world!? Moreover, do it for 10 years! That is exactly what Brian Trautman did with the SV Delos. What started out as a trip ended up becoming a lifestyle for over a decade including meeting his wife, starting a family on board, and exploring some of the most remote and exotic places in the world. This week we discuss: ✔️How traveling by sailboat is an incredibly fulfilling, but challenging way to spend your time ✔️ How he met his wife and is now raising a family while living on a sailboat ✔️ The amount of years and hard work needed to build a sustainable lifestyle based on income from social media ✔️ Different sailing opportunities that you can join if you want a taste of the high seas and the lifestyle
Today's guests on The Expat Money Show are Jim & Judy Brown, who own and operate a charter yacht called Dauntless. Whether it's a week of R&R exploring idyllic locations, or an adventure-filled experience learning the ropes of a liveaboard yacht, they make sure each and every guest will have simply the best vacation ever. He… is a Veteran Coast Guard Ocean Rescuer and a licensed U.S. coast guard captain with 8 years of deep ocean experience. She… is the first mate and chef aboard Dauntless and the Italian in her loves to create mouth-watering meals for their guests onboard. After 4 years of cruising the Caribbean, they decided that a change of scenery was in order, so they will ship their yacht across the Atlantic Ocean and operate out of Italy and Croatia this summer and next. Together they have sailed over 8000 nautical miles and hosted close to 30 couples and families aboard their yacht. This episode is the 3rd in a 3 part mini-series for the expat that wants to leave their home country but doesn't want to move to another country, instead sailing around the globe and visiting countries that have beautiful scenery, amazing food and warm sunny days might be your best option. If you haven't listened to Part 1, it's with https://expatmoneyshow.com/captivate-podcast/nick-terysa/ (Nick Fabbri & Terysa Vanderloo) from Sailing Ruby Rose, expats from the UK who talk to us about mindset, getting ready to purchase a boat, what to look for, and how much a new boat might cost you. Part 2 is How To Fund Your Sailing Adventure Around The World with https://expatmoneyshow.com/episodes/brady-trautman/ (Brady Trautman) on SV Delos. HERE'S WHAT WE DISCUSSED IN DETAIL IN THIS INTERVIEW:Jim had a great love affair with the water since he was a teenager, so it wasn't a far fetch for them to sell everything and buy a yacht. This is really a great story for those that have planned for retirement and wondering what else is there! Judy loves to entertain. She learned to cook 20 years ago and day by day just fell in love with the idea of cooking for others. Nowadays, she just waits for the ‘WOW'…that's what makes her day. Together, they have a beautiful yacht called ‘Dauntless' and they charter couples around the globe. How have they done that so far? What do they enjoy most about sailing the Caribbean and visiting beautiful dive sites, eating local fresh organic foods? Most importantly, what do their guests think? How has Covid affected their business? have they been able to sail the beautiful blue skies? Where is their boat today? and where will it be later this year? Jim and Judy share what they want for their new adventures in the Mediterranean. What countries they have planned for their guests, what sightseeing options are available? We talk a lot about their yacht Dauntless. What does she look like? How many people can she sleep? How big is she? We then spent some time on how they pick their routes? do they always stay the same course or is it different every time? and why? Not surprisingly, different countries have different rules for immigration, really no different than when you come by car or by air. You have to follow the rules and Jim and Judy know what is required at each port. And so much more! Originally from Florida, he studied environmental engineering before making the transition to full time sailing. His skills in marketing, video editing and qualifications as a Divemaster, Dive Instructor and Rescue Diver have played a huge part in keeping Delos in the top echelon of YouTube sailing channels, all the while inspiring others to follow their dreams. This episode is the 2nd in a 3 part mini-series for the expat that wants to leave their home country but doesn't want to move to another country. Sailing around the globe and visiting countries that have beautiful scenery, amazing food and warm sunny days might be your best option. If you haven't watched Part 1, it's with Nick Fabbri & Terysa Vanderloo from Sailing Ruby Rose, expats from the UK who talk to us about mindset, getting ready to purchase a boat, what to look for, and how much a new boat might cost you. Part 3 will be with Jim & Judy Brown from http://www.saildauntless.com (Dauntless) on how to plan a route and where to go. Great places that have easy access to land with plenty to see and do once you drop anchor. HERE'S WHAT WE DISCUSSED IN DETAIL IN THIS INTERVIEW:If your family and friends aren't sailors, where does the interest come from? How do you end up sailing around the globe in your early twenties? Brady Trautman talks to us about his first journey. Where they started and the islands they reached along the way. The beauty of the open water and sunshine day in and day out. Co-founder of the number two sailing YouTube channel in the world https://bowtie.mailbutler.io/tracking/hit/d900bf82-17a1-47d8-983e-0efb4d1f1f79/942b5b48-57a1-43f8-aec6-ddb136d9d4f5 (SV Delos) and how they have documented their sailing experiences around the world. The question is ‘how do you possibly fund a lifestyle where you are months upon months on the open seas? If you had any money to start, how long does it take to go through it?' Living and working in New Zealand and Australia, and how that happened. Mikkel & Brady talk a lot about diving...they both have a huge passion for scuba diving and some of the crazy things they have done while on a dive. What one thing, more than anything else, is important if you want to help crew a boat that will be a sea for many months. It's probably not what you think? After living for years in the South Pacific and the Caribbean where it is warm and hot every single day, they head up to Norway with their final destination of 80 degrees North, where it is cold and snowy, every single day. How they documented and filmed a 4 part mini-series called https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Bsck_nbiXI (80NorthSeries.com) and detailed the expedition of 8 sailors and filmmakers in the Arctic Circle. On this journey, the crew discover the very real effects of climate change and plastic pollution, witness some of the Arctics' rarest wildlife and learn the true power of Mother Nature. They self-published using a pay what's fair model! Brilliant! And what are Brady and his partner Alex doing now? They recently created the Cruiser Academy, teaching others how they too can quit the rat race and find their true passion on the ocean. The Cruiser Academy provides those with a thirst for adventure, the opportunity to learn how to sail, film and create a living on the water. With thousands of people turning to digital nomadism, this academy will be the inspiration many need to create a more meaningful life in 2021. After sailing 100,000 miles around the world, full-time filmmakers from the SV Delos crew go arctic.Read the full article on The Outdoor Journal.SV Delos is the most popular sailing channel on youtube. Over the past 10 years, they've sailed 100,000 miles around the world, enough to loop the equator three times, and they've filmed every thrilling adventure. Brady Trautman and Alex Blue film, edit and produce weekly episodes for SV Delos, of which there are over 430. They are used to traveling close to the equator, but they decided to step out of their comfort zone by committing to a sailing expedition in the arctic, just 600 miles from the North Pole. In this 4-part docuseries, the team covers several threatening issues to the wildlife and ecology of the region - from the extreme rate of glacial retreating, to the negative effect of Cruise ship tourism, to the brutal history of whaling in Svalbard, to the harmful impact of plastics pollution on Svalbard, which is in direct line of the gulf stream. In addition to these sobering themes, the series includes a veritable “polar petting zoo” with numerous wildlife encounters, including polar bears, walruses and a gigantic pod of beluga whales. In this episode of The Outdoor Journal Podcast, Trautman and Blue discuss the crew member they wish they didn't invite on, their most intimate wildlife encounter in the arctic and how to keep from murdering each other while living, working and traveling together with no personal space and nowhere to escape to.The best way you can support stories like this is to subscribe to the podcast right now and take a second to leave your review.Alright, let's go.

Erin has 15 years of communications experience in the corporate environment and has interviewed in excess of 1000 people throughout her career. She has an inquisitive nature and loves to ask the big questions, to get to the real heart of the story. Roam Generation came about while Erin and her family were living on a yacht and sailing the world’s oceans. However, they weren’t sailors when they came up with the idea of leaving the rat race and sailing away. Without letting that minor detail get in the way, Erin and her husband bought a yacht on the opposite side of the world and went on to cross the Atlantic Ocean a mere 18 months later. It was on that journey that she met the most inspiring and incredible people, people that she knew she had to help. Roam Generation was developed to support the adventurers, the inspirers, the dreamer and the doers to continue their lifestyle of freedom and adventure. By sharing her client’s stories through PR and social media, together they are able to inspire more people to step out of their comfort zone and live a life less ordinary. Senor Brady & Alex Blue of SV DELOS join Andy for a look back at how the 80º NORTH: SAILING ON TOP OF THE WORLD film series was created. We reflect on some of our favorite memories from Svalbard, including polar bear encounters, beluga whale songs, glaciers, walrus & much more! Then Brady & Blue describe the painstaking process of sifting through 4 terabytes of raw footage to edit together four, 30-minute episodes. They even reveal the untold story of the day of lost footage from a crashed hard drive! Brady Trautman and Alex Blue of SV Delos fame were part of a team that just released an amazing documentary about their sailing trip around the island of Svalbard. Together with Brian Trautman and Karin, they teamed up with Andy Schell and Mia Karlsson on the SV Isbjorn to form an 8 person team for this adventure. Svalbard lies 600 miles north of Norway and part of the island is above 80 degrees north, or the Arctic Circle. Brady and Alex have some incredible stories from the trip about the wildlife, geology, ice and also trash from fishing gear, nets and general plastic coming from around the world. The adventure was incredible and it spawned the desire for more while asking the questions about how to responsibly visit a fragile area such as Svalbard. Part 2 of our chat with Sailing SV Delos' Brian Trautman, who quit his job in 2009 to sail the world. In this chapter, Trautman offers his advice to aspiring YouTubers.
Brian Trautman quit his software job in 2009 to sail the world, and now makes a living with his popular "Sailing SV Delos" channel for YouTube. He joins Jeff via Skype from the boat to tell all about it.
Our guest for today's episode embodies what unconventional living is. For the past ten years, they've traveled the oceans powered by only the wind and the sun on their 53” sailboat named SV Delos. Living off the grid majority of the time, they make their electricity, water, and even moonshine on board. Brian Trautman, along with his brother, Brady, wife Karin, and two kids, have sailed to 40 countries spanning six continents, crossing the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans in the process, and have traveled enough miles to circle the globe three times.

** Interview episode 128 ** I’m really excited to share with you all a figure in modern surfing that continues to evolve and expand his influence in the surf industry, Mr CJ Hobgood. You hear his name, and you may automatically identify CJ with an amazing professional surfing career where he was ASP rookie of the year and former world champion but what I really enjoyed learning was there is so much more to CJ than riding waves. He’s an identical twin to his brother, Damien, CJ is a dedicated family man, he just created a movie, he’s podcasting, he’s helping support a major ocean lifestyle brand, and way more. We play some clips from the movie, And Two If By Sea, where CJ shares his own human experience in the world of professional surfing, we talk about pushing our limits in the ocean, the power of story telling, raising families, and more. Lots of good stuff with CJ that I’m really stoked to share with you all. Be sure to check out And Two if By Sea — it’s available on Amazon Prime and as you’ll hear today you don’t need to love surfing to love this movie, there’s something in it for everybody. And because we are all looking for more podcasts to add to our lineup, go find and follow the Salty Stories Ship's Log podcast that CJ’s launched with Salty Crew. So thanks again everyone. You may be familiar with my guest today from watching her share her sailing adventures on board SV Delos, but how did she end up meeting up with a bunch of strangers at a marina in South Africa and sailing across the Atlantic Ocean? I was intrigued to learn it was her camera that led her to sailing and that she didn’t even know who SV Delos was before she joined their crew. She now has some very impressive miles under the keel and has sailed to some amazing countries including Namibia, Brazil, The Azores and Svalbard. So what’s next for Alex, her sailing and her camera? Find out in this epic conversation.

** Interview episode 108 ** Sailing Vessel Delos is a 53 foot boat that has journeyed over 70,000 nautical miles, visited 45 countries, and kept safe over 50 different visiting crew for the past ten years. Brady Trautman, and brother Bryan, started their epic adventure together in 2010 and have since added partners Karin and Alex to this core crew of four, sailing the world and documenting the people, places, and activities of life at sea. We hear from Brady and Alex today about the history of Delos, how a crew of four functions together, their recent adventures in 2019 including sharks, lightning, and 2 transatlantic crossings, and hear their perspective on a sustainable life at sea and passion for creating their awesome SV Delos Youtube series. So definitely check them out online at SVDelos.com and see their YouTube channel — it’s by far some of the best ocean-focused videos out there. I hope Alex and Brady help inspire you get out on the water and find something new — whether it’s an entire ocean away or just down the coast from you — there’s always something new out there for each of us. Enjoy. You can also find fun stuff on the ThisOceanLife.TV website, Instagram, and Facebook, and Twitter. Host: Josh Pederson, @surfpaddletailgate Other parts of our conversation: Brian and Brady Trautman brothers started sailing together in 2010 Initial 3-week trip from Mexico to Marquesas Islands turned into 10 years Alex, joined Delos 3 years ago, running her own business, doing dive training. Reached out to Delos to join a trip and never left Day to day life with 4 people aboard, from cooking to maintenance of the boat Year recap of 2019 for Delos and crew, including 2 trans-Atlantic crossings and a gnarly lightning storm in the Bermuda Triangle Working with the sextant to measure position on the ocean in absence of electronics Amazing experience diving with blue sharks in the Azores 200+ youtube videos and the love and effort the Delos crew puts in to produce amazing content
Brady and Alex take a break from sailing adventures on the SV Delos to join the podcast and talk about what life looks like living on a ship and what all goes into creating a YouTube show and producing original content while in the middle of the ocean. Although Brady and his older brother Brian are 10 years apart in age and didn't spend that much time together growing up, when Brian made the decision to quit his job, buy a boat and sail the world, it would end up bringing them closer than they could ever imagine and grow into a YouTube sensation with a fan base all over the world. Part of the tradition on the boat has been bringing on fans who want to sail and work, and one of those adventurous souls was Alex Blue, who was no stranger to living on ships, and brought a wealth of knowledge of photography and filmmaking. Before long, Brady and Alex became inseparable and these days they make up the four person main crew along with Brian and his wife Karin. During our conversation we talk about how the Delos and the YouTube show came into existence, what it's like being out at sea disconnected from so much of the rest of the world for long periods of time, what it looks like to create each episode, and the advice they give to others looking for a life of adventure and creativity. This week I interview my frequent contributor and listener Richard Lycett about his photography work and sailing adventures Richard Lycett is a photographer his website is http://www.richardlycettphotography.co.uk/ Here is a recent video he produced. https://youtu.be/UDgUReGH6jg Richard also shared some tips of Drone Photography with me in a letter: "One of you’d listeners reached out to me and asked about drone tips. Maybe you could add this to the show notes? A small drone is always best as space is a premium on a boat so I highly recommend the DJI Mavic Pro (even the original one is very good). Catching is always the hardest bit, and although I haven’t done this, fixing up some sort of rod underneath to grab it by is recommended. SV Delos rigged one up and I thought they were going to make a commercial product but I’ve just checked their store and there’s nothing there. Tips for flying and not pickling it: Turn off all sensors. Sounds odd but you’ll never get it close enough to the boat or catch it unless you do. Launch off the stern as it keeps a gps lock, and if you’re moving forwards, it’s going to fly backwards. Catching. You can catch at the stern but the Bimini can get in the way. I prefer to catch on the foredeck by the Genoa. Practice this on land, and then at dock, before trying at sea." Want me to go sailing with you? Then contact me! #259. Alex & Brady are the other half of SV Delos. After meeting them for the first time up in Svalbard, Mia & I reunited with the whole Delos crew in Antigua after our Atlantic crossing on ISBJORN. We spent 3 weeks chillin' on the beach and hanging out in shorts! While Brian & Kazza were off on their honeymoon in New York City, Mia & I recorded a long meandering chat with Brady & Alex aboard Delos about their side of the Delos story.

Christian from the SY Zero YouTube channel and blog talks about doing the north Pacific circle from Mexico, to Hawaii, to Alaska, sailing the inside passage, and back to San Diego California. He talks about how he survived a busted rudder and used sails and motor to get back to port under his own power. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PE_w_1p3uhI&t=165s Our "On the AIS Segment" guest is the creator of the Adventuresare life (Sailing Windfall) YouTube channel who sails with her previously estranged father on the Great Loop. The host Linus Wilson talks about the sailing in the 3,500 nautical mile passage from La Libertad, Ecuador to Hiva Oa in French Polynesia's Marquesas Islands. He talks about sailing wing and wing and the different sail combinations he used to sail dead downwind for most of the passage. We came out with some great new videos on the Slow Boat Sailing YouTube channel that have been well recieved since last episode. Check out our "How to Transit the Panama Canal" video, which features Janna and Sophie for the first time since episode 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jloq585Lnxw Further, you can get the full VIDEO interview with sailing SV Delos of which part will make up episode 33 of the Slow Boat Sailing Podcast in April. You can watch it now at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ss9Gxxn9N58&t=2542s Finally, Linus summarizies the findings of his latest study that finds YouTube sailing channels that use Patreon make a video a week vs. a video every three to four months for sailing channels not on Patreon. Unlike the popular perception that Patreon supports the sailors, it only typically pays less than $80 per video and does not cover the cost of video production. You can see the video about that study at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UJxlW8_eUyw&t=7s Slow Boat Sailing is making a podcast and vlog about sailing around the world part-time. #176. SV Delos' videos have become an internet sensation. After leaving Seattle in 2009, Brian, who later met Karin in new Zealand, and his brother Brady have been sailing the world and filming their adventures. Almost by accident they've become the most popular sailing videos on YouTube and it's become their primary source of income. Andy & Mia met them in Stockholm for an in-person chat on the podcast. On the Wind is presented by Weems & Plath.

Podcasts must pay hosting fees. We have incurred high internet access fees in foreign countries to put out a regular podcast and to upload videos. For every hour of podcast or minute of video many hours of work must go into them to produce them. We only produce highly edited podcasts and videos because we believe our listeners and viewers time is so valuable. We make content that is for all audiences and will not sacrifice safety or our relationship with our loved ones to create suggestive thumbnails. Our crew wears life jackets and harnesses in all weather. We don't cut corners on crew safety to get exciting video. The vlog is also a video cruising guide of the places we visit focused on the seamanship necessary to visit the exotic foreign ports that we visit. The first interview of the Sail Loot Podcast is here! In this episode I have the pleasure of talking with Brian and Karin from SV Delos. Brian has been cruising on Delos since 2008 with his brother, Brady. They've met and hosted various crew members along the way, both temporary and permanent. We heard from Captain Brian Trautman of SV Delos a while back about sailing around the world. As a way to mix things up, they recently sailed far from their usual tropical landscapes to one of iceberg-filled water of Svalbard, only 600 miles from the North Pole. The experience proved rewarding and overflowing with adventure. We get to hear about everything from their night watching for damaging icebergs as well as their “Day of Magic” that includes an up close encounter with a polar bear. The other half of the SV Delos crew, Brady Trautman and Alex Blue, are here today to tell about that far north experience. They’re catching up with us during their 6500 nautical miles "Lap of the Northern Atlantic Ocean”.
