Due to unforeseen issues, Chris and Jody rerun this special episode. We revisit the captivating interview with the musical maestro and acclaimed producer, CJ Vanston.
Insights In Sound - Happy Accidents - Season 12, Episode 10 (#120) While pre-production and preparation are always important aspects of a recording, often the best and most memorable parts of a recording are completely unplanned. We sat down with engineer/producer Ross Hogarth and musician/producer CJ Vanston to share some anecdotes about the unexpected.
CJ Vanston Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson I could have laughed all night and still have laughed some more! What fun! Composer, producer, songwriter, keyboardist, CJ Vanston––great bit on his name to start, had me laughing to tears story upon story. Oh boy, I needed the eggs. From his musical beginnings, locked in and listening to his dad's cool jazz band through the floorboards, burning an oven full of their pot at age 4, the tales kept coming, one topping the next… convincing a young Richard Marx to keep and record what would become his biggest hit, when all he wanted was to sell the thing… working with Prince, sorta, blowing away Barbra… Streisand, that is… and Dolly Pardon, seemingly not impressing Don Henley, CJ making a choice that cost him but ultimately made him, and Don coming back around through Katey Segal… how Russ Kunkel introduced him to Christopher Guest, changing everything, leading to touring with Spinal Tap and scoring his films, touring and recording with Joe Cocker, a story about Ringo worth the price of admission (let's pretend there is one), and absolute gem, likewise the opening for Jeff Beck and saving his ass, literally. We close with a fab story about Jeff Porcaro, and his storied history with Lukather and Toto, too. The time flew. I sit here hours later, still smiling. What a joyful journey. Can't wait for the Spinal Tap Final Chapter and that Denny Tedesco collaboration. More Caucasian Jeff, please! My guest this week is producer, songwriter and keyboardist CJ Vanston. CJ Vanston started doing jingles in Chicago where he soon became a first call player, doing as many as six sessions a day. After moving to Los Angeles, he worked with a wide variety of artist like Toto, Def Leppard, Prince, Joe Cocker, Tears For Fears, Spinal Tap Ringo Starr, Bob Seger BB King, Celine Dion Barbra Streisand, Dolly Parton among many others. He's also worked on films like Waiting For Guffman, Best In Show, Sweet Home Alabama, A Mighty Wind, Mascots and more. CJ has also written and performed pieces for the Dalai Lama and Muhammad Ali, and most recently y co-wrote, co-produced and performed on Jeff “Skunk” Baxter's 2022 solo release called Speed of Heat. During the interview we talked about how he got the nickname CJ, getting started in the studio scene, learning to engineer and mix, and much more. I spoke with CJ via zoom from his home in the Hollywood Hills. On the intro I'll take a look at the ruling that finally gives songwriters a retroactive raise, and the camera that can see vibrations and record multiple instruments separately. var podscribeEmbedVars = { epId: 83459851, backgroundColor: 'white', font: undefined, fontColor: undefined, speakerFontColor: undefined, height: '600px', showEditButton: false, showSpeakers: true, showTimestamps: true };
Tap's musical director and producer CJ Vanston dishes about how Bruce Springsteen caused Michael McKean to miss the real Stonehenge; why Jeff Beck thinks CJ is literally a giant; and who in Guns N' Roses cut Spinal Tap's amp cables at Wembley Stadium. Marc Bonilla discusses the Keith Emerson tribute concert DVD and CD release.
Chris and Jody tackle several common recording myths. Common whataboutisms of recording get exposed. Do you need great gear? What about amplifiers and EQs? Oh and those pesky sample rates, should I always be using the highest available one?!? Plus you might hear about Audiothing, Spotify, CJ Vanston, Jeff Scott Soto, Eric Valentine, Dave Pensado, and Sir George Martin. It's also not unlikely that some nonsense will be discussed. To top it off, what are this week's Friday Finds. It's all in here.
Chris and Jody tackle the concept of recording Guitar using Direct Input techniques. Generally reserved for electric guitar, but can also be used for acoustic guitar if it’s equipped with pickups. They talk about the different methods of DI that you can use. Plus the how’s and why’s of doing DI type recording. It’s also not unlikely that some nonsense will be discussed.Shoutout to: StudioDevil, Redwirez, CJ Vanston

Routinely cited as one of the funniest movies of all-time, This Is Spinal Tap is much imitated, oft-quoted, and as fresh now as it was when it first appeared in 1984. If you haven't seen it, you must buy it immediately. Directed by Rob Reiner, it takes the form of documentary following a shambolic heavy metal band as they tour North America. Though the band is, of course, fictional, their songs are very real, and very funny. One of the men behind both these songs and the razor-sharp script is writer, actor, director and musician Christopher Guest. As we'll discover, Christopher's musical background stood him in good stead for Tap, and also A Mighty Wind, his affectionate parody of the folk world. His latest directorial project is Mascots, in which he appears alongside Parker Posey, Jane Lynch, Chris O'Dowd and Ed Begley Junior among many others. As with all his films, there's no traditional score - with the tunes the mascots perform to provided by CJ Vanston. But he is a fan of film music, and in particular the quirky orchestrations of Italian legend, Nino Rota. Expect plenty of music from Tap, The Folksmen and Mascots, as well as the odd trip-down-memory-lane clip too.
Raghu is joined once again by musician, author, and teacher, David Nichtern. David chats with Raghu about his new book, “Awakening from the Daydream,” which reimagines the ancient Buddhist parables of the Wheel of Life and Samsara. David describes a few of the realms of Samsara and where we see them playing out in our world today. He also gives us practices to overcome these obstacles to our inner balance. This conversation about Buddhism is not one to be missed. Everyone can learn something, as David relates the teachings of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche in a way that is accessible to anyone. “In each of these realms, the peace that you are talking about has been mistaken. You think the peace is, ‘ If I keep competing and keep getting to the top, then I will have peace.’ In The Hungry Ghost realm,’ If I keep consuming if I keep craving things that act will bring me peace.’ But it is exactly that act which keeps you from having peace.” – David Nichtern,Awakening from the Daydream: Reimagining the Buddha’s Wheel of Life More About David David Nichtern is a senior teacher in the Shambhala Buddhist lineage of Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche and Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche. "Devotion is part of our nature, we love to be involved, we love to connect. This is the deepest connection a heart can make, this connection to deep devotion and unconditional love…” -Krishna Das Krishna Das and David Nichtern sit down for an interactive discussion on devotion, tapping into their experiences with both the Hindu and Buddhist traditions, respectively. When it comes to devotion these two spiritual paths overlap is in the Vajrayana form, or tantric style of Buddhism, when a teacher appears in the form of a master/guru. This is seen to be extremely special as a focal point in practice, because they have accomplished what you yourself would like to accomplish. For even in the three refuges of Buddhism—the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha—the guru is considered the forth refuge. Krishna Das recounts how life-changing it was to experience the unconditional love that radiated from his guru, Neem Karoli Baba aka Maharaji, in India, and how slowly through just hanging out, Maharaji's presence opened their hearts. For some spiritual seekers who have had this physical experience of the guru, it’s an inspiration to see the possibility of someone exhibiting that kind of love, clarity, and timelessness, in person. David recounts his own experiences while pursuing the Buddhist path under the tutelage of Chogyam Trumpa Rinpoche, and the incredible lineage he's a part via his own personal practice. “The ring of devotion hitting the hook of the guru, the link you have to that being, in our tradition, is practice, therefore it is very, very important…the practice is the connection for us to individually continue to connect in that way, when we don’t have the luxury of knowing that kind of being in person…” At the end of this podcast, there’s a Q&A covering the following topics: -Does the spiritual path need a stage of darkness in order to attain a level of depth? -Not feeling an unconditional love connection with spiritual teacher/lineage. -The role devotion has played in Krishna Das’ singing. -Has Krishna Das found a way to love everyone, the way Neem Karoli Baba does? -The role of grace in Krishna Das’ spiritual life and how it has helped him to cultivate devotion. A new Toto album doesn’t come along too often, so when one does it’s a pretty exciting topic for all of us at Inside MusiCast.
