As broadcast March 30, 2023 with The Roots and Durand Jones proving they are omniscient. Just about 20 years ago today saw The Roots release their landmark Phrenology LP, so we started with the smashing lead single to commence proceedings. Both Black Thought and Durand Jones show up not once but twice during our Sampled funk & soul first hour, then we had great stuff from Freedom Fry, Tyler, Lonnie Liston Smith, and Lord Echo just to rattle off a few legends featured with new joints out. Hour 2 we get AMPED once again, with Dan Lloyd dropping dimes from GEL, boygenius, and The Beths to make sure we finish the process extra strong.Tracklist:Part I (00:00)The Roots feat Cody Chestnutt – The Seed 2.079.5 feat Durand Jones – Our Hearts Didn't Go That WayTyler, The Creator – DOGTOOTHThee Sacred Souls – Running AwayFreedom Fry – Je T'aime Pas, Je T'aimeSalami Rose Joe Louis feat Brijean – PropagandaFreedom Fry – Merci, Non MerciPart II (32:20)El Michels Affair & Black Thought – I'm Still SomehowLord Echo – In Your Life (Lisa Tomlins vers)Devon Gilfillian – Right Kind of CrazyLonnie Liston Smith & Jazz Is Dead feat Loren Oden – A New SpringDurand Jones – That FeelingLeonid & Friends – Street Player (Dimitri from Paris Super Disco Blend Pt 1 & 2)Part III (64:20)Empire State Bastard – HarvestThe Beths – Watching the CreditsBoygenius – True BlueCrawlers – That Time of Year AlwaysLinkin Park – Fighting MyselfSamiam – Lights Out Little Hustler Part IV (95:59)Smashing Pumpkins – SpellbindingGel – Honed BladeGord Downie and Bob Rock – Greyboy SaysCable Ties – Time For YouLockstep - WeaveDEVO – Beautiful World

As broadcast June 10, 2022 with plenty of laughs in memory for our stream experience. Tonight we welcomed Dutch Canada-based singer-songwriter Nurdana De Rijcke to the show to talk about her new EP "Coming Home," which drops on Tuesday. Inspired and written by her dearly departed father Rob, Nurdjana took these songs and put her own imprint on them to both pay tribute and bring closure to the process of loss. Despite the background of loss, this two hour show is certainly a summery celebration of music, with Nurdjana bringing her favorites to the forefront in a playlist of inspirations to her soulful sound.#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)Gnarls Barkley – CrazyKobo Town – London TownJupiter & Okwess – Na KozongaCymande - BraFinley Quaye – Sunday ShiningThe Roots – The Seed 2.0 Part II (31:49)Alogte Oho & His Sounds of Joy – Yu Ya YummaQuadron – Slippin'Kendra Morris – This LifeBetty Harris – There's A Break In The RoadLyn Collins – Take Me Just As I AmMarijata – No Condition Is Permanent Part III (61:34)Nurdjana – Do The Right ThingStevie Wonder – Higher GroundAretha Franklin – Save MeLake Street Dive – Good KisserSharon Jones & The Dap-Kings – How Do I Let A Good Man Down?Jamie Lidell – Another Day Part IV (94:29)Nurdjana – She Gives Me WaterMadcon – Beggin'John Legend – Save RoomJoss Stone – Put Your Hands On MeAmy Winehouse – Back To BlackMayer Hawthorne – A Long Time
As broadcast March 31, 2022 with plenty of extra tissue to dry your eyes. Tonight in our second hour AMPED feature, we'd been saving this one since the news broke this weekend of the very sudden demise of Taylor Hawkins. A brilliant vocalist, legendary drummer, and amazing musician to say the very least of it, he will be dearly missed and we hope this little bit of positive energy can help begin the long process of healing for everyone, especially his friends and loved ones. For our first hour, we had lots of great new funk and soul energy, along with a look back on this date in 2003 when The Roots dropped Phrenology as well, so a quality albeit misty two hours of music in store.#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)The Roots feat Cody Chestnutt – The Seed 2.0Bosq feat Pat Kalla – C'est Quoi, C'est QuoiBrian Jackson – All TalkChelsea Carmichael – All We Know (Shabaka Hutchings remix)Addison Groove – Brand New Drop (Nuff Pedals remix) Part II (30:41)Topher James & Biscuit Brigade – Kinda HeartbreakingTopher James & Biscuit Brigade – Matter of TimePOSY feat Brandon Markell Holmes – Fill My CupHenry Franklin with Jazz Is Dead – The GriotFunmilayo Afrobeat Orquesta – Vazante de VeraoCharles Mingus – The Man Who Never Sleeps (Live) Part III (78:42)Foo Fighters – Times Like TheseAlanis Morrisette – You Oughta KnowNHC – Something About YouFoo Fighters – Cold Day in the SunCoheed and Cambria – The Running Free Part IV (110:20)Foo Fighters – RopeLed Zeppelin – Rock n RollQueen – Somebody to LoveTaylor Hawkins – Bob Quit His JobTaylor Hawkins and the Coattail Riders – I Really Blew ItFoo Fighters – My Hero

Today, we're sitting down with singer-songwriter Omar Apollo. Omar grew up on a musical diet of his parents' favourite musicians like Pedro Infante, Los Panchos and The Beatles. The 23-year-old began playing guitar himself aged 12, whilst singing in his local church choir and dancing ballet folkorico. Once his lustful, multi-octave pop songs left his bedroom for the internet, he started racking up millions of streams. His first album, Apolonio, came out in 2020. Omar's Unsung choice is American R&B, neo-soul musician Cody Chesnutt.Cody's 2002 album, The Headphone Masterpiece, was recorded on a 4-track cassette recorder in his bedroom recording studio. The record was met with critical acclaim for its compelling, imaginative take on alternative R&B. Despite a brush with stardom, Cody has never found mainstream success and has always maintained the status of an elusive, underground artist. Fitting then, that Pixar tapped him to write and perform as a show-stealing subway busker in their blockbuster 2020 movie Soul.Omar speaks with Tara Joshi. Unsung is produced by Eliza Lomas and mixed by Becky Street with theme music from Facta. Today’s episode digs into the power of owning your story and being authentically and unapologetically yourself in your work. Because what you create is a reflection of who you are – whether it’s a film, a photo, a business or a cupcake! Being so honest can be pretty scary for most people, myself included. I struggle with this a lot, especially on social media. But this conversation reveals how when you can embrace your identity and the things that make you different, the more relatable, resonant and creative your work will be. And I truly believe this applies to LIFE IN GENERAL. Just swap out the word “work” for “life.” Evita Castine is an Emmy Award winning producer, director, actor, and photographer. Her films have been recognized by the Cannes Film Festival, One Lens Festival, Warner Brothers, and more. In today’s conversation, she shares her journey to becoming an award winning filmmaker, why she says putting emotional intelligence into your work makes it stronger, and how being different is your super power. Evita also shares how she uses her iPhone (yes, you read that right - her iPhone!) to create work for major clients like Spotify, musicians like Cody Chestnutt, and Fox Studios. Mentioned in this episode: Evita's journey to becoming a director and why she became inspired to begin telling her own stories How being different and an outsider shapes her work and makes it unique Why putting emotion into your work makes it stronger How judging things inhibits your creativity Why she says you don’t have to go to film school if you want to be a filmmaker How she developed her artistic voice and unique visual style in her work How she started creating work using her iPhone for major clients Her formula for the “straightest” path to living a fulfilling creative life and making your dreams into reality Why a teacher told her to go clown school CONNECT WITH EVITA: Website | Instagram CONNECT WITH CREATIVITY SCHOOL: Thank you so much for listening! Universally hailed as a thrilling new figure in music for his edgy, lo-fi debut, The Headphone Masterpiece, back in 2002,Cody ChesnuTT is a soul troubadour whose frank, socially conscious ruminations on life continue to challenge popular notions of what modern soul music can look and sound like. The Atlanta native has always stood his own creative ground, ever since he first holed himself up in his bedroom to record The Headphone Masterpiece. Cody sang "To Be Young, Gifted and Black" on Meshell Ndegeocello's album Pour Une Âme Souveraine (or "For a Sovereign Soul"). Check it out on Sound Cloud: http://www.soundcloud.com/okayplayer/meshell-ndegeocello-to-be Landing On A Hundred, Cody’s second full-length LP, marks his return to the music game after a period of family-man retreat and reflection that did a world of good for him after his meteoric rise to near fame. The title is a reference to the slang saying, “Keeping It One Hundred,” or telling the whole truth, and for lovers of true blue Southern soul this new album is a must-have. http://www.cchesnutt.com That's Still Mama video:http://youtu.be/lYvRP4kxzJA Love Is More Than a Wedding Day video: http://youtu.be/9MDOZKKYgD0
