Karyn Schwartz is a community herbalist what starts out with exactly what we need to know about herbalism, "If you are interacting with plants in any way, you are doing herbalism. If you are cooking with plants in your kitchen, you are doing herbalism. If you are making tea, you are doing herbalism. If you are sitting and listening to the grass, you are doing herbalism. There are so many ways to have relationships to plants and we are bound to them- we are always in relationship to plants. There's no oxygen without plants. We're not here unless we are in relationship to plants. Even before we talk about the consumption or utilization of plants, we have to recognize we are wholly dependent on the plant world for our existence." From there, we have a wide-ranging conversation about the ways in which relationships with plants can inform our experience in life. Karyn shares how she met different plants, like the high joy being around buckets of basil and the experimenting with making ink from choke-cherry juice. Although she didn't grow up encouraged to be close to plants, her persistence, curiosity and humility helped her learn bit by bit what this relationship is and how knowing plants makes us more human. Join Samwise Raridon, Community Herbalist and Bob and Rebecca of Currents intentional community in Shawnee, Osage, Adena and Hopewell land (colonially known as South Eastern Ohio) for an exploration of the energy of Maple and the joyous and arduous project of making maple syrup. Maple is a tree that evokes an energy of motherly protection, abundance, sweetness and also balance, boundaries and reciprocity. In this episode we explore what it means to get a "no" when approaching a plant (which is actually a gift!) and what it could mean to orient towards giving back to the lands we are on, and especially what it could mean for settlers to give to the land and the people who have cared for the land since time immemorial from whom so much has been taken. We also touch on the sweetness of connection that keeps us going in these generational journeys of restoring healing and balance. In the spirit of moving towards balance and reciprocity, we invite you to join us in donating to the vital educational and coalition building work of the Greater Cincinnati Native American Coalition. A link to their donation page can be found here: https://gcnativeamericancoalition.com Another wonderful and powerful project we encourage you to donate to is the Sogorea'Te Land Trust, a land rematriation project led by Indigenous Women. Join Samwise Raridon, Community Herbalist and Educator in conversation with Farmer, Birthworker and Fiber Artist Margy Sankey. Together we delve deep into apple magic and cultivation, the power of witnessing birth and how weaving art through all aspects of life gives it that juicy vitality that apples are so well known for. I learned so much interviewing Margy and I hope you do too! You can find out more about Margy's fiber art and check out their exhibition One Year, One Outfit (which was just featured on NPR!) at the Praxis Fiber Studio in Cleaveland. You can find out more about the idea of a fibershed and what it means to locally produce fiber and textiles at Fibershed.org. There's also a great book called Fibershed by Rebecca Burgess and Courtney White that's a great resource. Also, here's a link to more about Granny Smith's story of witnessing french crab apples birth a new (to us) cultivar of apple! For more info on where to get apple and other fruit tree root stock and grafting materials, you can check out where Margy got theirs at Cummin's Nursery. The book Margy mentioned in the episode is Michael Phillip's book The Apple Grower: A Guide for the Organic Orchardist. Big thanks for Margy for sharing so much wisdom and experience! And always, thank you so much to the apple tree in it's many forms. You hold so much wisdom, wildness and remembering. Recently it seems like there's been a proliferation of hop-flavored beverages on the market. Not just beer, but also sodas, fizzy waters, and other gently bitter elixirs are competing for attention with kombucha and fancy herbal infusions. This seems like a good thing to us – more people getting some bitters in their lives couldn't hurt! But it also brought to mind this week's topic: a common warning herbalists make, that there's potential for cases where hops cause depression, or worsen it.This can absolutely be true in some cases, and we ourselves regularly pass on this caution! But as with most things in herbalism, it's not so cut-and-dried as it seems at first. In this episode we'll discuss historical and contemporary info sources on the subject, and try to get a more nuanced perspective. In certain situations, the cold and sedative nature of hops does make it contraindicated for depression. But in others, the term ‘depression' is used as a catch-all for a variety of mental states, some of which hops can improve. So does hops cause depression? It depends on the context! But a good grounding in herbal energetics helps us see through the superficiality and understand which situations are which.Mentioned in this episode:Herbal Tinctures in Clinical Practice, Michael MooreHops, Henriette KressHumulus lupulus, Marisa MarcianoHops, Richard WhelanHops in A Modern Herbal (1931), Maude GrieveHumulus in The Eclectic Materia Medica (1922), Harvey Wickes FelterHumulus (U.S.P.) – Hops in King's American Dispensatory (1898), Felter & LloydEffects of a hops (Humulus lupulus L.) dry extract supplement on self-reported depression, anxiety and stress levels in apparently healthy young adults: a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, crossover pilot study, Kyrou et al (Hormones 2017, 16(2):171-180)Assessment report on Humulus lupulus L., flos (2014), European Medicines Agency, Committee on Herbal Medicinal ProductsThe Holistic Herbalism Podcast, Episode 101: How Herbs Are Different From DrugsOur Energetics & Holistic Practice course has all the info you need to understand herbal actions, qualities, tissue states, and constitutions. The Women's Health, Wisdom, and... WINE! podcast is a biweekly conversation with practitioners, providers, patients & healers about complex reproductive medicine & women's health challenges, the value of an integrative approach to these challenges, many of the women's health topics you're already thinking about & uncomfortable talking about & my personal favorite... WINE!Often times, we can heal from even the most damaging physical wounds easier than we can from the invisible (and often hidden) emotional ones. Each year millions of women face the reality of living with a mental health condition. In this episode, we will use our time together to focus on the healing value of connecting in safe ways, prioritizing mental health, acknowledging that it's okay to not be okay, and joining the national movement to raise awareness about mental health. Today we're taking some special time to highlight the various non-conventional, non-pharmaceutical, non-invasive treatment modalities that provide support while also fighting the stigma of needing help.Together, we can realize our shared vision of a communities where women affected by mental health challenges can get the appropriate support and quality of care to live healthy, fulfilling lives — communities where no one feels alone in their struggle. You are not alone. Now more than ever we need to find ways to stay connected with our respective communities. No one should feel alone or without the information, support, and help they need. Community Herbalist and Doula Taylor Huntley shared her two birth experiences that inspired her work and mission. Taylor's first pregnancy was a surprise that led her down the rabbit hole of learning all of the possible options. She found herself needing to self-advocate more than she expected as she dealt with being “overweight.” She surprised her provider with how healthy she was and not allowing her race to be a risk factor. Her provider started discussing induction at 37 weeks, and Taylor found herself agreeing after some bullying. Taylor put her foot down and called her doctor to cancel the induction on the day she was supposed to check-in. An ominous voicemail from her provider after the cancellation led Taylor to fire her provider at term. She found a midwife to continue her prenatal care and refer her to a hospital with on-call CNMs. The stars aligned as Taylor arrived at the hospital at 42 weeks and was able to have the preferred midwife catch her baby. Taylor was thankful that she hired a doula to support her pregnancy and labor as she continued to have push back about her birth plan from the nurses at the hospital.Taylor gathered herself and all of her knowledge as she embarked on her second pregnancy. She knew what she wanted and how to get it. A Black midwife supported this pregnancy, and it was a planned homebirth. Taylor didn't have the support from her parents regarding homebirth, but she pushed forward because it was her desire. Their concerns were based on their personal health experiences. She successfully labor at home and delivered in her home with her partner and birth team.Taylor found healing in her homebirth experience after having challenges in her first pregnancy. Her voice was heard and honored. Taylor's births have led her to serve in a space for Black women through birthwork.Resources:Mama Mangos Care | Austin, TX family supportMama Sana Vibrant Woman | free pregnancy, birth and postpartum support in Austin and Travis CountyBlack Mamas ATX | holistic care for black women before, during and after childbirthThe Woman's Earth | global sisterhood for women of color
I first sat down with my guest in this episode, Pacific Rim College faculty member and herbalist Peter Conway, to record for my other podcast, Pacific Rim College Radio. However, I knew once the interview was over that I also needed to publish it here as, among other assets, Peter is freakishly intelligent and deeply committed to his purpose. He has lived in a van and a teepee, has fought for the preservation and dissemination of herbal medicine knowledge, and generally follows in life a punk rocker ethos. Listening to him talk about plant-spirit medicine is like listening to a living mystic – I actually think Peter is a living mystic – and his knowledge extends vastly beyond the bounds of herbal medicine. We touch base with myriad topics including chaos theory, inner reflection during Covid, punk rock, spirituality, and nature. Here are some more commonly known bits about Peter. He graduated from the College of Phytotherapy in the UK in 1995. Prior to joining Pacific Rim College in 2015, Peter taught for many institutions and co-wrote the BSc Degree course in Herbal Medicine at Napier University in. He served as president of the College of Practitioners of Phytotherapy for 12 years and is a former director of the European Herbal and Traditional Medicine Practitioners Association. Peter is the author of “The Consultation in Phytotherapy” textbook that he is now revising for its second edition. Peter currently lives in Victoria, is one of 9 distinguished faculty members of Pacific Rim College Online's renowned Home Herbalist and Community Herbalist programs, and is working on an online project that will address “deep herbalism". Speaking of deep…that's Peter. This guy has so much wisdom that you might want to listen to this episode more than once. My guest in this episode, PRC faculty member and herbalist Peter Conway, has lived in a van and a teepee, has fought for the preservation and dissemination of herbal medicine knowledge, and generally follows in life a punk rocker ethos. I assure you that Peter is a freak, and that is one of his many endearing qualities. Listening to him talk about plant-spirit medicine is like listening to a living mystic. And yet much of his mystery is wrapped up in what he calls the mundane: the common and ordinary world of herbal medicine that we are all rooted in, even though most have perhaps never been conscious of those roots. From the distillation of alcohols and the production of colas to candies and perfumes, all were once forms of herbal medicine. Peter graduated from the College of Phytotherapy in the UK in 1995. Prior to joining Pacific Rim College in 2015, Peter taught for many institutions. He co-wrote the BSc Degree course in Herbal Medicine at Napier University in Edinburgh and co-wrote the “National Professional Standards in Herbal Medicine” for the UK Government. He served as president of the College of Practitioners of Phytotherapy for 12 years and is a former director of the European Herbal and Traditional Medicine Practitioners Association. Peter is the author of “The Consultation in Phytotherapy” textbook that he is now revising for its second edition.
