Scott talks to Bob Murphy about the economic side of all the covid policies this past year. Most obvious are the huge spending bills, which dwarf even the stimulus measures taken after the 2008 recession. Murphy reminds us that this kind of rampant spending really means the federal reserve and the treasury have “created” new money out of thin air. This money enters through the financial sector, slowly making its way through the rest of the economy, where it can cause price inflation, stagnating wages and the loss of the value of savings. But it allows the federal government to spread out the harmful effects of its policies in a way that wouldn’t be possible if it were to raise taxes or borrow the money all at once. Murphy also talks about the way that small businesses have been devastated by lockdown policies, while large corporations have absorbed the losses more easily. These large corporations will survive when the small businesses close, buying up their assets and moving in on what used to be their business. This is yet another way that huge government action benefits big business and the politically connected at the expense of the average business owner, employee or taxpayer. Discussed on the show: “Understanding Money Mechanics” (Mises Institute) “Neoliberal Champion Larry Summers Opens Mouth, Inserts Both Feet” (TK News by Matt Taibbi) The Great Deformation: The Corruption of Capitalism in America Bob Murphy is an economist with the Institute for Energy Research, a research fellow with the Independent Institute, and a senior fellow at the Ludwig von Mises Institute. Robert P. Murphy The Theory and Brief History of the U.S. Gold Standard To fully understand our current global monetary system, in which all of the major powers issue unbacked fiat money, it is helpful to learn how today’s system emerged from its earlier form. Before fiat money, all major currencies were tied (often with interruptions due to war or financial crises) to one or both of the precious metals, gold and silver. This international system of commodity-based money reached its zenith under the so-called classical gold standard, which characterized the global economy from the 1870s through the start of World War I in 1914. Under a genuine gold standard, a nation’s monetary unit is defined as a specific weight of gold. There is “free” coinage of gold, meaning that anyone can present gold bullion to the government to be minted into gold coins of the appropriate denomination in unlimited quantities (perhaps with a small charge for the service). Going the other way, to the extent that there are paper notes or token coins issued by the government as official money, these can be presented by anyone for immediate redemption in full-bodied gold coins. Finally, under a genuine gold standard, there are no restrictions on the flow of gold into and out of the country, so that foreigners too can avail themselves of the options described above. Back in April 2019, I reached out to my guest today, and in October, we finally conducted this interview you're about to hear. I had seen some of his economic theory articles on a website called Mises.org, which I had been turned onto by the Tom Woods show. Anyway, he has the best breakdown of how interest works and and the moral repercussions of biblical lending and unbiblical lending. He didn't say it that way, but I was able to connect what he was saying with God's law, and I knew I had to at least reach out. He's the clearest teacher that I have found on how banking works, and if I can get off track for one second here, here's what he cleared up for me: There's two distinct functions that used to be totally separate in business—1) paying a bank to protect your stuff. 2) Saving money at a bank, lending it your money which they pay interest on. Sort of like the bank buys your money at wholesale prices, lots of small amounts, and it sells your money at retail and splits the interest earnings with you. Look up his lectures on YouTube. Fantastic teacher. Very clear and able to distill ideas to their essence. His name is Robert Murphy. He's a Christian and economist. He's a Research Assistant Professor with the Free Market Institute at Texas Tech, a Senior Fellow with the Mises Institute, and he's a co-host with Tom Woods on their podcast "Contra Krugman." We talk about: Bob's story from nominal Catholicism>atheism>Christ, reconciling Paul's commands to be subject to authority with Christian anarchism and anarchocapitalism, socialism in the early church, mandatory charity enforcement in the Bible, capital punishment, life ransoms for crimes, lawful slavery, negligent homicide insurance, and much more. This same interview is episode 74 on Bob's show. Bob turned the tables on me and started digging in to my ideas, and we had a fantastic time. I think it will be well worth your time, and it was definitely worth my wait.

I" not sure how much Rhianna's Diamond Ball remarks or Timberlands new eco line really meet the standard for environmental activism but you need to know we're on board with the agenda. From there we take a little jaunt to watch as president Trump wields the EPA like a club to force San Fransisco to do something about their homeless problem. You know that EPA that's supposed to be the unbiased referee in the game? We know that's bullshit but we need to help more people see it. Article 1 - Article 2 - Article 3 - Article 4 If this isn't enough craziness we take longer look at the relaxing of CAFE standards by Trump while California defiantly makes a claim for states right...I know ridiculous but lets hope it catches on. If that wasn't enough we get a great example of cronyism as the manufacturers beg for the harsher admission standards across the board because we all know how caring they are...or just hate the idea of not being protected from competition by labyrinthine compliance mandates of every stripe. If you care to hear a much smarter energy expert on the topic might i recommend Episode 205 of Contra Krugman. Article 1 - Article 2 - Article 3 - Article 4 - Article 5 - Article 6 - Article 7 - Article 8 I'm glad California hasn't over-run the entire country yet is what this episode is getting at. The ordinarily serene Bob Murphy is genuinely outraged in this episode, in which we cover Krugman’s casual claim that Donald Trump is trying to establish an “authoritarian, white nationalist regime.” Needless to say, it does not matter what your opinion of Trump is. On this week’s episode, we bring back Tom Woods for a bit of history, free market solutions, and the latest news on the Contra Krugman cruise to Alaska in 2019 (use code Tatiana and get a free download of one of my albums).  The last one was a lot of fun, but Alaska is a once in a lifetime kind of place to visit, so I know I will be there!  Tom has a free E-book called “Our Enemy, the Fed” that we talked about, which was especially cool since when I learned about the Fed back in 2011, that is when I “woke up”.  I wish more people would learn about the terrible impact that central bank has had on the world! He’s really one of my favorite guests, and certainly one of the most knowledgeable.  Tune in, learn something, and have a few laughs! About the Guests: Tom Woods is the author of 12 books, including the New York Times bestsellers Meltdown (a free-market treatment of the financial crisis, with a foreword by Ron Paul) and The Politically Incorrect Guide to American History. He holds a bachelor’s degree in history from Harvard and his master’s, M.Phil., and Ph.D. from Columbia University. For more books, click here: http://www.tomwoods.com/books. Paul Krugman loves Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and says her suggestion for a much higher top marginal income tax rate is actually well founded and economically sound. Now if the column were just about that, it'd make for a great episode of Contra Krugman. But the way Krugman speaks of "the rich" is downright sinister, and we hit that head on as well. Ah, the frustrations of economics and new crypto folks.  Look, I love when eager people get into the space, but I can’t help but get a bit upset when they don’t have the critical understanding of economic underpinnings needed behind their suggestions to help the world.   This is the difference between most well intentioned folks who end up with Venezuela, and the enlightened ones (kidding) that have studied a bit of Mises or Rothbard.  So in this episode, I have to bring out the big guns. In this thinly-veiled 52-minute promotion for the Contra Cruise, happening October 21-28 (tickets available at ContraCruise.com), Tom and I open talking about the cruise, highlights from previous cruises, and the origins of the Contra Krugman podcast. What's up with the title? I recently turned someone on to Tom's show, and after listening for a couple weeks he asked me "why isn't this guy the Libertarian Party candidate for president?" I ask Tom to provide an answer. Before recording, I just listened to Episode 1236 of The Tom Woods show, called A Thousand Statist Arguments Smashed. Also I just moved to Pittsburgh and I have been meeting a lot of new people lately, and have been having some really frustrating political conversations. Most of these people at first are simply baffled by me not being a progressive, and I have to explain to them I'm not really a Republican either. I have proceeded calmly, and I usually discovered their political identities are almost entirely driven by emotion. So in 1236, Tom has some great rational arguments against statism/leftism, but very few people REASON their ways into those ideologies. I wanted to hear how Tom factored in and handled the volatile emotions of leftism in some of his debates/interventions. Please Support School Sucks We do cool things! Thanks to your support. This week Krugman complains that workers are becoming less free: Obamacare is in danger of repeal, and more and more workers are being required to sign noncompete agreements. These things limit people's choices, says Krugman, so in a very real sense they are being made less free. Is any of this true, and is Krugman's understanding of freedom coherent? This is all especially good fodder for Contra Krugman. Show notes for Ep. 88

Robert talks about the Austrian Theory of the Business Cycle and how while the bust has been delayed, it has also been made much larger. Jason and Robert discuss Keynesian Economics and why Keynesian Economics won't die. Robert thinks the people in power love it because it gives them the justification to do what they already wanted to do. Next, Jason asks Robert if he sees parallels to the US now and prior to the 1929 stock market crash and ensuing Great Depression since he wrote a book about the Great Depression of 1929 and the New Deal. Robert says the 2008 crash resembled the 1929 crash and the roaring 20s were similar to the housing bubble of the 2000s prior to the 2008 crash. Robert then talks about how the history books have Herbert Hoover incorrect labeled as a proponent of the free market when in fact he was a massive interventionist. To wrap up the interview, Jason and Robert talk about how Wall St and Keynesians don't count asset price inflation as inflation while Austrians do and why Keynesians hate saving and deflation so much.
