When Brewers Association (BA) staff economist Matt Gacioch is asked whether craft brewers are optimistic or pessimistic, his response is “brewers are realistic.”   “They are understanding that this is a new environment that they are operating in,” Gacioch said during the latest edition of the Brewbound Podcast. “Mid-April 2025 is very different than mid-April 2015.”   Gacioch, who is in his first year as a full-time employee of the BA, described a maturing and challenging craft beer market for a variety of factors, from consumer consumption shifts to increased competition and variety to economic pressures and tariffs.    “The way that consumers and markets don't like uncertainty, small business owners really don't like uncertainty,” he said. “That is the environment that we're in right now. There's a lot of products that go into beer making and [the] operating of a brewery [that] can be bought from within the U.S., but the supply chain is so complex and so global that certain tariffs are going to have an impact on pricing of brewery inputs.    “So not being able to plan too far into the future because of how things have been changing so quickly has made it really tough for brewery owners to make great beer and feel like they can make a solid business plan for the year and years ahead,” he continued.   Which brings us to the 2025 edition of the Craft Brewers Conference taking place in Indianapolis next week (April 28-May 1). Gacioch anticipates that many of the conversations inside and outside of the Indiana Convention Center will center on those factors and strategies for pushing forward, including his own seminar  (1:15 p.m. ET Tuesday, April 29) discussing case studies from breweries who tapped into growth drivers in 2024.    Gacicoh also touches on new breweries making this year's top 50 craft list, potential opportunities and challenges for breweries adding food service and why he's excited for CBC. Plus, more conversation about kicking field goals than you'd expect.   But first, the Brewbound team recaps the latest news, including the BA's recent webinar on tariffs and the NBWA and Fintech's Q1 2025 webinar on beer category sales trends. Justin, Jess and Zoe play Another Round or Tabbing Out on copycat designs infiltrating the hard lemonade and iced tea space, with a hat tip to Fingers' Dave Infante.

This is always a good time to reflect and get excited about a new calendar year. To help put the industry into perspective and to think about how to strengthen beer in the year to come, I've asked three smart and plugged in folks to share their insights, knowledge, and even offer some homework. If you're a small brewer navigating these tough craft beer waters, there's a lot you can learn and hopefully take to heart. Guests:Steve Parkes. He is the owner and lead instructor at the American Brewers Guild Brewing school in Vermont. He graduated from Heriot-Watt University, with a degree in Brewing Science in 1982 and has spent the last 42 years working in small and medium sized breweries on both sides of the Atlantic. He has built breweries from scratch using both used and new equipment, and has years of experience in practical problem solving. He has been a regular speaker at the annual Craft Brewers Conference, is a veteran GABF and World Beer Cup judge, held office at the regional level with MBAA, and at a national level with the AOB board of advisors. In 2009 he was the recipient of the Association of Brewers Russell Scherer award. He is also the owner of Drop In Brewing in Middlebury Vermont.Laura Lodge began her craft beer journey in the distribution tier in the late 1990s working with a small, independent distribution company in the mountains of Colorado. As anyone in small business knows, “everything” is your job description. She shares her experience to benefit the artisanal/craft business owner in Distribution Insight for the Craft Brewer. Today, Laura is the owner of Customized Craft Beer Programs, a consulting business offering insight and assistance with all things craft beer. With experience over all 3 tiers, she has consulted for breweries and distributors, created retail programs for destination resorts, is the Executive Director for the well-known Big Beers, Belgians & Barleywines Festival held in the Colorado Rocky Mountains each year (pre-pandemic), and has participated with the creation and production of educational & experiential craft beer events throughout the country. During the pandemic, Laura became the Co-Founder of Start A Brewery, LLC, a business created to help dreamers, breweries in planning, and growing breweries by pulling together a community of savvy industry professionals and resources across the brewing industry. Free to the public, StartABrewery.com divides the daunting process into phases and breaks it down by category, further augmented by a library of information. Start A Brewery has turned out to also be a resource and connection hub for her participation the Brewers Association Mentorship Program. Laura grew up in the Cleveland, Ohio area, and now splits her time there with home in Vail, Colorado, where she lives and enjoys the outdoor lifestyle. For the last 29 years Ashton Lewis has worked for Brew Your Own Magazine as technical editor and “Help Me, Mr. Wizard” columnist. Click the logo to visit Pouring for Neighbors at the NC Craft Brewers Guild site. Lisa Parker, executive director of the North Carolina Craft Brewers' Guild, talks about Hurricane Helene relief in North Carolina on Brew Ha Ha with Herlinda Heras and Steve Jaxon. She is calling from Ashville, North Carolina, which Hurricane Helene hit hard. She will talk about Pouring for Neighbors, their fund raising initiative. The map at the top of this episode page, from NOAA, reports rainfall from Helene, as of Sept. 27. You can see that Ashville is in the area that got the most rain. In fact, Lisa describes the conditions in the majority of western North Carolina as a war zone. The area is a hotbed of craft brewing. They have 120 breweries in the counties designated for FEMA relief. The devastation is heartbreaking but the collaboration among the breweries and the neighbors is vigorous and inspiring. Most of the area was not a flood zone so a lot of residents did not carry flood insurance. There are linemen out in the field restoring power. Many bridges and roadbeds have been washed out and there are many landslides. Russian River Brewing Co. is open in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and at their big Windsor location. Visit their website for up-to-date hours, menus, beers and more. Pouring for Neighbors Most of us remember the fires that hit Sonoma County in 2017 and 2019. At that time of need, many brewers around the world united to produce special beers whose proceeds went to local relief, supporting services for the people affected. This kind of campaign has become an occasional event after other disasters and Hurricane Helene is an example of that. See our sponsor Victory House at Poppy Bank Epicenter online, for their latest viewing and menu options. Being in western North Carolina, Ashville was in the middle of Helene's path of destruction at the end of its run up the south-eastern United States. Pouring for Neighbors began "right off the bat" to raise money. It is a tap designation program. Any brewery or taproom or restaurant can designate a tap and donate at least a dollar from each sale to Pouring for Neighbors. There are three options at the website. The web page has all the information you need to participate, and there is also a long list participating breweries. There is a coalition of breweries assisting in delivering supplies. The National Guard and FEMA are all on the ground helping out. Any reports to the contrary are false. :)

Golden State Cider Unfiltered Breanne Heuss, Marketing Director for Sonoma Craft, is our guest on Brew Ha Ha with Steve Jaxon and Herlinda Heras. Sonoma Craft is the umbrella organization that holds Golden State Cider, Sonnenschein Cocktails and Seismic Brewing. This is Breanne's first time on Brew Ha Ha but co-owner Christopher Jackson was on this episode of the show on May 19, 2022, to talk about Golden State Cider. He was also on this episode in July 2019 to talk about starting Seismic Brewing. Breanne is responsible for marketing the three brands that share their company values of making high quality products using sustainable practices. Seismic Brewing has refocused as a craft lager brand, with distribution at the tap room and in selected locations in the Bay Area, but on draft only. They still make their different lagers, including Tremor and the Red lager. Breanne has been with Sonoma Craft for three years, and she worked for Golden State Cider before that. Herlinda mentions that spirits have overtaken beer in terms of annual sales in the US. Unfiltered After they taste their Unfiltered cider, they will taste a cocktail too. Golden State Cider has different tiers of cider. The base tier, called the core tier, includes the Mighty Dry, Brut and Jamaica. They have added one that is unfiltered, which is very dry and has big rich apple flavor. They also have a non-alcoholic cider, called “Dry and Mighty.” Russian River Brewing Co. is open in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and at their big Windsor location. Visit their website for up-to-date hours, menus, beers and more. The Sonnenschein Cocktail is the Valencia Mimosa. It is made with fresh Valencia orange juice, and a bit of apple eau-de-vie. Each can holds two mimosas. The ABV is 10%. See our sponsor Victory House at Poppy Bank Epicenter online, for their latest viewing and menu options. All the Sonoma Craft companies are dedicated to sustainable practices and to supporting local and statewide charities. They are also involved in hurricane relief in western North Carolina, with the local Craft Brewer's Guild.  And they support local farmers by using fruit and other ingredients as much as possible from growers that are local, California-based or on the west coast. Golden State Cider has the Core series, the Harvest series and the Radical series. You can find all of them here on the Ciders page of their website.  They are open Monday through Sunday from noon to nine.

It follows Deep Creek, which is also in liquidation, and Brothers Beer which is in voluntary administration. Meanwhile beer fans say they're finding it harder to afford their favourite crafties, as the cost of living bites. Felix Walton has more. 322: Nat West of Reverend Nat's Cider Takes a Craft Brewer's Approach to Cider Making

Reverend Nat's Cider (http://reverendnatshardcider.com) has helped change peoples' assumptions about craft cider in the Pacific Northwest, over their past 12 years of operation. The iconoclastic cider maker has adopted a flavor-forward, reverential-but-forward-looking approach to cider making that has ruffled some feathers and changed default narratives, but one thing it's never been is boring or cautious. A few weeks ago, West announced that he was winding down operations of Reverend Nat's Cider. Rather than let that experience and perspective fade into the ether, we engaged with Nat to capture his creative approach to cider making in a way that could be preserved for perpetuity. In this episode, West discusses: his beer-centric approach to cider making flavor and innovation within the very locally-focused cider sector making cider with beer yeast and selecting yeasts that work with the flavors of cider using hazy IPA yeast in cider making filtration and stability in cider achievements and regrets after a dozen years of making cider commercially approaching the closure with intention and passion And more. NA craft beer has become an important sector of the craft beverage industry, but with some brewery hesitation. We will discuss why Dry January can actually benefit your brewery, and how you can appeal to those observing as well as those who may chose NA options year round. We will have a few of our industry friends with us discussing how you can plan for what is traditionally seen as a slower time in the market, how your taproom, sales channels, and events can all benefit from Dry January through NA offerings. Our technology started on a laboratory benchtop when Ben Jordan, CEO, began a quest to prove that non-alcoholic (NA) beer can provide the same pleasurable drinking experience found in craft breweries. ABV Technology was formed and the team began researching the NA market and soon found that demand for great tasting NA beer far outweighed supply. A visit to the Craft Brewer's Conference in April 2017 uncovered a lack of equipment focused on the craft brewing industry. At that point, the decision was made to move forward and bring to market a technological solution worthy of the craft industry. Years of research, testing, drinking and more have led us to being pioneers in the craft NA market, and we look forward to sharing everything we've learned with you! After we settle down from the big reveal Bob and I discuss this week's Lorain Beer Festival, the upcoming Medina County Brewery Passport tour, and the latest promotional program that has been developed by the Craft Brewer's Association. In the interview segment I sit down with Frank Estremera from Muskellunge Brewing company. Frank tells me about his time in research and development of pharmaceuticals and how it led him to becoming a pro brewer. We taste several beers including a Hefe, American Light Lager, Honey Nut Brown, and a Mango Gose. Frank talks about hand building most of his equipment and how he truly may be the Dr. Frankenstein of North East Ohio Brewing. This week on BSR, Jimmy gets schooled on yeast and the history of bread and beer traditions! We welcome Lars Marius Garshol of Norway, an author and researcher in yeast and traditional farmhouse brewing; Pete Lengyel-Fushimi, NYC-based craft brewer and Jimmy's go-to scientist; and Eric Pallant of Pennsylvania, Author of Sourdough Culture. We start by diving into Norwegian Kveik Yeast strains, known for their extremely high temperature tolerance. This allows for turbo-speed beer fermentation, which incorporates historically significant, ancient traditions. Eric compares those traditions to tracing back his sourdough starter to the time of the industrial revolution!Later on, Pete applies the scientific method to Eric and Lars to try and pry some of the secrets of fermentation out of them…Grab some headphones, press play, and get ready to break down and bubble up!Photo Courtesy of Lars Marius Garshol.Heritage Radio Network is a listener supported nonprofit podcast network. (NSFW) Once again back at the offices of the AZ Craft Brewers Guild to talk to the Executive Director Rob Fullmer and newly appointed Deputy Director Andrew Bauman. We talk about the much anticipated Real Wild and Woody 2022 indoor festival. This year happening a Bell Bank Park, the same site that this years Strong Beer Festival was at as well. But, luckily for all of us, it is inside a nice air conditioned space. We go over some of the pain points that Strong Beerfest had and how hopefully this years RW&W festival is going to be better. But, also the reason why the Guild choose to have it at this new location. After the break we talk about the connections that the Arizona Brewers Guild has with other guilds across the nation. We touch on what difficulties New Jersey is having currently and how it might happen here in Arizona.  This episode is a collaboration podcast between the AZ Craft Brewers Guild and The Hoppy Craftsmen.
