This show has been flagged as Clean by the host. 01 This is the third in a four part series on simple podcasting. 02 In this episode we will cover the following topics: Analysis of audio noise problems and filtering methods used to deal with specific problems that we may find. Command line recording. Command line playback. Getting information about an audio recording. 03 Introduction When I did my first couple of podcasts I didn't notice that there was a quiet high pitched whine or buzz in the background. Nobody complained about it, but I thought I could do better in subsequent episodes. 04 Creating an Audio Sample If you have a similar problem, the first step is to find out where it is coming from. If there is no audible noise where you are recording, there is a good chance the problem is in the microphone or another part of the audio system. Plug in your microphone and record 2 or 3 seconds of quiet audio where you do not speak into the microphone or make other noise. 05 You will need a minimum amount of data in order to analyze it. For a flac file sampled at 44.1 kHz, 2 to 3 seconds of data should be enough. To get a sample of just electronic noise you can put the microphone in a drawer or somewhere like that if you want to be sure of getting a quiet signal. Any sound recorded in this way should be mainly from the microphone or other electronic elements in the analogue pathway. To get a sample of possible ambient noise, such as fans, make sure the microphone is in the open air in an area which is representative of where it will be when you are recording. -------------------- 06 Analyzing using Fourier Transforms Next you need to look at the wave form. At this point I will describe this using Audacity. I will show other ways later, but Audacity is actually the easiest if you are starting from nothing. You don't need to become an expert in Audacity to use it, just follow the steps I will describe. I myself don't know how to use Audacity beyond using this one feature. 07 We are going to analyze the sound spectrum in our sample. The technique being used is a Fourier Transform. A Fourier transform, often called an "FFT" for fast fourier transform, is a mathematical method of showing a signal in terms of frequency along the x axis instead of time. This allows us to spot troublesome noise frequencies which appear when we don't want them to. The FFT is a very common mathematical technique which is widely used in signal processing, not just in audio. 08 There is software which will create pretty coloured animations of sound waves, but this is not what you want. These are simply decorative patterns and won't tell us what we want to know. -------------------- 09 Using Audacity Install Audacity if you haven't already. Start Audacity. Select file > import > audio, then navigate to your sample and select "open". The file should load. 10 In the wave form part of the window, click anywhere and then type Ctrl-S to select all data points. The chart should turn a slightly darker colour. From the menu, select Analyze > Plot Spectrum. A new window will open, showing magnitude in db on the Y axis, and frequency in hertz on the x axis. For "algorithm" be sure it is set to "spectrum" 11 There are now two settings that we need to play with while we look for problems. One is "size" The default for this is 1024. The other is "axis". The default for this is "log frequency". -------------------- 12 What to Look For What we are looking for are large obvious spikes that stand out in the data. Since our test signal has very little to no actual audio data, any spikes should represent electrical or other noise that doesn't belong there. 13 I have found two combinations of settings to be most helpful in finding problems. These are Size 2048, axis linear frequency. Size 32768, axis log frequency. 14 A small size value can help very narrow spikes stand out from the background more, while a large size value can help separate spikes from surrounding noise. A linear frequency axis can help with seeing all spikes across the full frequency range, while a log frequency axis can help to better see what is happening in the often very crowded lowest frequency range. -------------------- 15 A Real Example of an Audio Problem If you have good audio equipment you may find nothing obvious. If you cannot hear any noise in the signal, there may be none of any consequence and there is nothing for you to do. 16 However, in my case I found two main problems and one lesser one. One problem was a spike at 60 Hz, which is the AC line frequency. There is also a lesser problem of a collection of a broad frequency range of noise below 60Hz. Both of these however will be taken care of by the basic filtering that we looked at earlier so we do not need to worry about them here. 17 The other main problem is I had a large spike at every 1 kHz interval from 1 kHz to 19 KHz. This was noise generated within the head set electronics, or the result of noise on the USB power supply. This is the product of a cheap headset. 18 These spikes are not very large compared to the volume of my voice, but if I do the same sort of analysis of samples where I am speaking, they appear in the intervals between words. This results in a high pitched whine or buzz. This was the source of the background noise or buzz in my first two podcast episodes. I need to get rid of this. 19 One option would be to get a better microphone, but, well, that wouldn't be any fun would it. It would also cost money and I don't want to spend any of that if I don't have to. If you analyze your own signal, you may find a different pattern, or even no noise at all. If you did not find anything when shielding your microphone from ambient audio noise, repeat the same test but with the microphone exposed to acoustic noise in the room. -------------------- 20 Advanced Filtering The next step is to figure out how to get rid of this noise. I have called this section "advanced filtering", but we are actually just making use of a technique that was already covered in basic filtering. 21 To deal with the remaining spikes we can use additional "band reject" filters, each of which removes a specific frequency at 1 kHz intervals from 1 kHz to 12 kHz. We will use this in combination with the filtering that we have already done previously, so we don't need to worry about anything above 12 kHz as we already remove that with a low pass filter. After a small amount of experimenting I came up with the following. 22 Because I am applying a total of 16 filters, 4 for basic filtering and 12 to deal with the specific microphone problems that I have, I have broken up the filters into separate strings. I then generate the 12 new band reject filters from a template. Note that I don't show the "de-esser" filter here. I would recommend adding it as a separate step after doing the sort of filtering we are talking about here. 23 Rather than reading out multiple lines of bash script, I will post them in the show notes. I will give a brief description of them here which you can refer to when reading the show notes. The FFMPEG and Sox versions are very similar in concept so I don't need to go over the Sox version in detail. See the show notes for it. FFMPEG Version Here's the FFMPEG version. # The high and low pass filters. hlpfil="highpass=f=80, lowpass=f=12000" # Band reject filters filter for 60Hz and another for 50Hz. linefil="bandreject=f=60:width_type=h:w=20, bandreject=f=50:width_type=h:w=20" # Create a series of band reject filters, from 1 kHz to 12 kHz. # Change or remove this part if your recording hardware does not require it. ftemplate="bandreject=f=%s000:width_type=h:w=100" kilospikefil=$( seq 1 12 | xargs printf "$ftemplate," ) # Using ffmpeg ffmpeg -i input.flac -af "$hlpfil, $linefil, $kilospikefil" output.flac 24 There are a total of 5 lines of bash script. In the first line, we create a string called "hlpfil" which is just the high and low pass filters copied from our previous discussion on basic filtering. In the second line, we create a string called "linefil" which is just the simple bandreject filters to cover 50 and 60 hertz AC line noise filters also from basic filtering. 25 In the third and fourth lines, we create a string called "kilospikefil" containing the new filters. The "f" parameter represents the frequency we are targeting. The "w" parameter represents the "width" of the frequency range we are filtering in terms of hertz. The filter is applied gradually rather than with a sharp cut-off, so to get more filtering action we need to have larger width. In this case I decided to hammer the spike quite aggressively and so used a relatively wide width of 100 hertz. Testing with a voice file did not show any noticeable distortion, so it's an acceptable solution. 26 For this filter we need to create a dozen filter command so we use the shell "seq" command to generate a sequence of numbers from 1 to 12. We then pipe that into the xargs command which applies each number to the next command. The next command is "printf", which takes the number it gets from xargs and applies it to the "ftemplate" string template in a manner very similar to C programming printf string templates. 27 We also have a comma in there to separate each of the individual filters. We then surround this with a $ and () so we can run the command and capture the output into a variable. Then we call ffmpeg and pass it the filters we created by putting the variable names inside a double quoted string, separated by commas. All of this will be in the show notes, so don't worry about trying to get the exact details right now. Sox Version Here's the Sox version. # The high and low pass filters. sxhlpfil="highpass 80 lowpass 12000" # Band reject filters filter for 60Hz and another for 50Hz. sxfilter="$sxhlpfil $sxkilospikefil bandreject 60 20 bandreject 50 20" # Create a series of reject filters filters, from 1 kHz to 12 kHz. sxftemplate="bandreject %s000 100" sxkilospikefil=$( seq 1 12 | xargs printf "$sxftemplate " ) # Using SOX. sox input.flac output.flac $sxhlpfil $sxfilter $sxkilospikefil 28 The Sox version is very similar with the exception that the command arguments representing the filters must not be in quoted strings as Sox wants to see them as separate arguments instead of parsing a string. -------------------- 29 Confirming the Effect If we apply the above filters and look at this headset noise output file in the Audacity spectrum analyzer we will now see that these noise spikes are almost completely gone. We can now confirm how well this works by using a test audio file. Any normal short voice audio file will do for this. Just talk into the microphone normally and create a voice sample file that is 5 or 10 seconds long, or whatever you feel comfortable with. 30 With the original unfiltered voice audio I can hear a distinct high pitched whine overlaying the voice. With the filtered audio that whine or hum is not detectable. If we then look at the voice file in the Audacity spectrum analyzer, we can see distinct "notches" at the 50 Hz and 60 Hz frequencies, and at every 1 kHz from 1 kHz to 12 kHz. These notches are narrow enough that they won't cause a noticeable problem with voice signals. If we apply this filter to voice samples, the buzz or whine is gone and the voice signal sounds fine. Despite using a very cheap microphone, I now have acceptable quality audio for a podcast. 31 Again I want to emphasize that in this instance I am dealing with deficiencies with my hardware instead of buying a better microphone. These additional filters are intended to deal with the specific hardware problem I am facing. You don't need these additional filters if you cannot detect an audible problem. On the other hand, if you have a different problem you may wish to deal with a different set of frequencies. Finding these problems is the reason for using a spectrum analyzer. 32 FFMPEG has other filtering methods as well. However, as I didn't end up using them I can't really do an adequate job of describing them. If anyone has used them successfully, they are welcome to make a podcast on the subject. -------------------- 33 Completing the Process With these new filters added into the middle of the processing steps, you can now complete the processing by doing the de-essing, normalizing, and review steps as described in the previous episode. -------------------- 34 Command Line Recording I will now cover a separate topic, which is recording using command line programs. I am covering it in this episode as it is a short topic and it is convenient to talk about it here. 35 As well as using GUI based recording programs such as Gnome Sound Recorder, it is possible to record podcast episodes using command line tools such as FFMPEG. As for why you may wish to use command line tools to record audio, there are several reasons. One is that you may simply prefer to do it this way because it pleases you to do so. Another is that it allows the recording step to be included in a script that encompasses other parts of the process, automating what may have otherwise been separate manual steps. 36 However, if you don't find these arguments particularly compelling, then I'm not going to attempt to persuade you to use the command line to record audio. I am doing this part of this episode out of a desire to have a bit of fun and I probably won't be using it much myself. I will however use one of these methods to record this part of this episode. 37 Recording with FFMPEG - The Basics One of the common command line tools you can use is FFMPEG, a package which I have previously mentioned with respect to filtering audio files. Here is an example of how to record using FFMPEG. We call FFMPEG specifying the audio input system as the FFMPEG input, and then specify a file to output to. 38 # Record audio. ffmpeg -f pulse -i default ff.flac 39 Press 'q' to stop. This uses pulse audio on Linux for input "-f pulse", and the default input "-i default". However, this does not specify the the sample rate or mono recording. To do that we need to add a few more parameters as in the following 40 ffmpeg -f pulse -i default -ac 1 -ar 44100 ff.flac 41 "-ac 1" specifies mono output "-ar 44100" specifies 44.1 khz bit rate. 42 Playback with FFMPEG - The Basics FFMPEG can also play back music. In this case however we need to call the "ffplay" program rather than FFMPEG itself. To play an audio file, simply call ffplay and give it the name of the audio file as an argument to the command. For example: 43 # Play an audio file. ffplay podcast.flac 44 We can also call it with the "autoexit" option, which tells ffplay to automatically exit when the audio file has finished playing. ffplay -autoexit ff.flac 45 -autoexit means Exit when the audio file is done playing. 46 To exit in the middle of the recording, press "q' or ESC. To pause the playback, press "p" or space bar. To decrease the volume press "9" or "/". To increase the volume press "0" or "*". 47 To seek forward 10 seconds, press the right cursor button. To seek backward 10 seconds, press the left cursor button. To seek forward 1 minute, press the up cursor button. To seek backward 1 minute, press the down cursor button. 48 The "0" and "9" keys mentioned above are those on the top row of the keyboard, not the ones on the separate numeric pad. 49 While the recording is playing, a graphical window will open which shows a cascading waveform based on the current content. This is purely decorative and does not serve any particularly useful purpose. -------------------- #!/bin/bash # Record a podcast episode segment. # Get the next file name. # First we check if any matching file patterns exist. If they don't, # then we create the first one starting counting at 1. fcount=$( ls [0-9][0-9].flac 2>/dev/null | wc -l ) if (( $fcount < 1 )); then fname="01.flac" else # If there are any matching file patterns, we find the highest number # and increment it by 1. filenum=$( ls [0-9][0-9].flac 2>&1 | cut -d. -f1 | sort | tail -1 ) newfilecount=$(( 10#$filenum + 1 )) fname=$( printf "%02d.flac" $newfilecount ) fi echo "Recording to: $fname" # Record using ffmpeg. # This makes use of pulse audio and the input is the default audio input. # The sample rate is set to 44.1 kHz, and it is recorded as mono (1 channel). ffmpeg -f pulse -i default -ar 44100 -ac 1 $fname echo "Recorded audio to: $fname" # Report on basic information about the audio file that was just recorded. ffprobe -hide_banner $fname -------------------- 50 Sox - Not so Good I did not find the recording or playback features of Sox to be as useful as those of FFMPEG, so I won't bother to cover them here. -------------------- 51 Getting Information About an Audio Recording There are also command line tools which can be used to retrieve information about audio recordings. 52 FFMPEG Version With FFMPEG this is called "ffprobe". For example: 53 ffprobe hpr4566.mp3 54 This will print out a lot of information about FFMPEG itself. To skip that use the hide_banner option. 55 ffprobe -hide_banner hpr4566.mp3 56 This will print out information about the audio recording. This will include things like the duration, bit rate, sample rate, stereo or mono, etc. If the author added metadata tags to the file, it will also show those. HPR add things like the title, author, copyright license, comment, etc. You can extract the ones you want using something like grep and cut. 57 Sox Version Sox has a similar feature, called "soxi". 58 soxi ff.flac 59 However, it may not work on mp3 files if you do not have an mp3 handler for it installed. -------------------- 60 Conclusion In this episode we took a brief look at an example of how to solve an audio problem through filtering. We looked at how to use Audacity to find where the problems were. We then looked at how to apply filters to remove these sources of noise. We also looked at how to record podcasts and get information about audio files using command line tools. 61 In the next episode we will look at alternatives to Audacity for analyzing audio. While Audacity works just fine, this is an opportunity to have a bit fun with some gratuitous hackery. 62 This has been the third episode in a four part series on simple podcasting. -------------------- -------------------- Full Audio Processing Pipeline This version includes the special filters used to fix my headset problems. For the past few years, Microsoft has basically carried the carbon removal industry on its shoulders. The software company has purchased 72 million tons of carbon removal, more than 40 times what any other organization has financed, according to third-party sources. Now it's pulling back. As we reported last week, Microsoft has told suppliers and partners that it's pausing new purchases. Though the company says that its program “has not ended,” even a temporary pullback will have significant implications for the nascent carbon removal industry. What happens next for these companies? And is a bloodbath on the way? Emma Blake is, musically, something of a nomad. She made her name—Solid Blake—that is, in Copenhagen, where she cofounded the influential Apeiron Crew alongside Mama Snake and Smokey. They were responsible in establishing the city's "fast techno" sound, which blended sleek techno and trance influences into something colourful and retro-futuristic. But Blake's side of things was always more rooted in electro, with a party-starting flair that you might be tempted to pin to her Glaswegian upbringing. (Her first release, Mario, came out on the label of the legendary Glasgow taps-aff basement nightclub La Cheetah.) And she's also spent time in Berlin, so she has those techno bona fides, too. Another EP, released on Modeselektor's Seilscheibenpfeiler, further fleshed out her electro-techno hybrid sound, also explored in her Historical Repeater project with Danish artist Ctrls. DJing has been her major focus, though—she has an excellent Rinse FM show—and you'll hear a refined approach on her excellent RA Podcast, which is like a club set in miniature, starting out midtempo and rushing towards a heady climax with tracks like Pariah's "Squishy Windows." It's loaded with creative grooves, toothsome textures and the kind of sleek melodies that helped define her stint in Copenhagen since the beginning. @solid_blake Read more at https://ra.co/podcast/873
Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2022.10.27.514043v1?rss=1 Authors: Tays, G., Hupfeld, K., McGregor, H., Beltran, N., Kofman, I., DeDios, Y., Mulder, E., Bloomberg, J., Mulavara, A., Wood, S., Seidler, R. Abstract: Altered vestibular signaling and body unloading in microgravity results in sensory reweighting and adaptation. Microgravity effects are well-replicated in head-down tilt bed rest (HDBR). Artificial gravity (AG) is a potential countermeasure to mitigate effects of microgravity. We examined the effectiveness of daily AG for mitigating brain and/or behavioral changes in 60 days of HDBR. One group received AG for 30 minutes daily (AG; n=16) and a control group spent the same time in HDBR but received no AG (CTRL; n=8). All participants performed a sensorimotor adaptation task 5 times during fMRI scanning: twice prior to HDBR twice during HDBR, and once following HDBR. The AG group showed similar behavioral adaptation effects compared with the CTRLs. We identified decreased brain activation in the AG group from pre to late HDBR in the cerebellum for the task baseline portion and in the thalamus, calcarine, cuneus, premotor cortices, and superior frontal gyrus in the AG group during the early adaptation phase. The two groups also exhibited differential brain-behavior correlations. Together, these results suggest that AG may result in a reduced recruitment of brain activity for basic motor processes and sensorimotor adaptation. These effects may stem from somatosensory and vestibular stimulation from AG. Copy rights belong to original authors. Visit the link for more info Podcast created by Paper Player, LLC
Don't let @solid_blake's diminutive stature fool you: she plays with a ferocity and precision that flips Europe's most tasteful dance floors inside out. Born in Glasgow but operating out of Copenhagen, she was a founding member of the Apeiron Crew DJ collective, has produced as Historical Repeater with Ctrls and often plays with Mama Snake as she did at our own festival a few years ago. Her Rinse FM radio show is always packed with new sounds that have you desperate to find out more, as is this week's mix. It's built on bold, body-shaking rhythms that are elastic and acrobatic. They're loose and roomy to start before the kinetic energy builds through jungle cuts, thumping deep techno and unhinged club music. Though squarely aimed at the dance floor, these selections are detailed with freaky monologues or wild vocalisations that bring them to life outside the club. They're both deep but lively and run through with a subtle sense of party-starting fun.
Our first premiere of the week comes from Ctrls on DJ Stingray's imprint, Micron Audio. Ctrls experiments electro and bass heavy tracks on this release to great effect. The Danish producer unpicks the deepening complexity brought on by our pervasive digital lives. The Ctrls project came to life in 2012 and the Danish artist immediately made his mark on the techno scene. His fast paced and futuristic techno based sound has now been well established with a stream of respected music on labels such as Token Records, Earwiggle, and Key Vinyl. The Danish artist has held it down at a number of high-profile venues throughout the world, including Tresor, Fold, Berghain, Khidi, Fabric, Kit Kat, Fold, and Club Drugstore, as well as a residency at Ved Siden Af, Copenhagen's purest electronic dance music club. For his next release the formidable techno artist releases on DJ Stingray's imprint Micron Audio as it opens its doors to an external artist for the first time. Across four tracks, the Danish producer unravels a dark and funky electro core, taking inspiration from the rapidly intertwining codependence between technology and society. As digital twins, metaverses or humanoid robots lodge themselves deeper into our surroundings, Ctrls unpicks the deepening complexity brought on by our pervasive digital lives. Encouraged by Micron Audio boss Stingray to delve into the darker productions as a means of exploring a contemporary electro sound, Ctrls fixes a hypnotic heft with fresh industrial sound. ‘Subroutines' is a dark and heavy bass exploration, as Ctrls experiments with sub heavy drums and glitchy synths. Alarming drones play off inky reverb swells. Ctrls captures a cataclysmic atmosphere with profound groove. And, in most cases, I need to execute that zip CLI from a "working directory" in order to maintain the input directory's local folder structure. Historically, I've had to execute the zip command through a proxy command in order to use a working directory. However, with the release of Lucee CFML 5.3.8, the CFExecute tag now has a directory attribute! I'm super excited about this; so, I wanted to take a quick look at how it works.https://www.bennadel.com/blog/4074-using-the-directory-attribute-to-invoke-cfexecute-from-a-working-directory-in-lucee-cfml-5-3-8-189.htmBlog - Julian Halliwell - Copying Windows file permissions in LuceeThere is a currently unresolved regression bug in Lucee affecting file uploads, which is worth being aware of.When you upload a file using Lucee it isn't saved directly to the destination path, but is first stored in the server's GetTempDirectory() location before being moved to where you've specified it should be.Having this intermediate step is a sensible security measure as it allows the OS to detect viruses before the file is placed anywhere it might do damage.https://blog.simplicityweb.co.uk/126/copying-windows-file-permissions-in-lucee Blog - Nerd Vision - Java and ColdFusion variablesAt NerdVision we are always open to your feedback, and we want to make NerdVision the best it can be for you! That's NOT its current purpose, of course.https://coldfusion.adobe.com/2021/07/proposal-cached-queries-fromcache-wascached-indicators/ CFML JobsSeveral positions available on https://www.getcfmljobs.com/Listing over 147 ColdFusion positions from 67 companies across 100 locations in 5 Countries.4 new jobs listed this weekFull-Time - Sr Software Engineer/ColdFusion Developer (Remote) at Reston.. - United States Posted Jul 03https://www.getcfmljobs.com/jobs/index.cfm/united-states/Sr-Software-EngineerColdFusion-Developer-Remote-at-Reston-VA/11294 Full-Time - Sr Software Engineer/ColdFusion Developer (Remote) at Reston.. - United States Posted Jul 03https://www.getcfmljobs.com/jobs/index.cfm/united-states/Sr-Software-EngineerColdFusion-Developer-Remote-at-Reston-VA/11293 Full-Time - Coldfusion Developer at Texas - United States Posted Jul 02https://www.getcfmljobs.com/jobs/index.cfm/united-states/Coldfusion-Developer-at-Texas/11292 Full-Time - Coldfusion Developer at Bengaluru, Karnataka - IndiaPosted Jul 01https://www.getcfmljobs.com/jobs/index.cfm/india/Coldfusion-Developer-at-Bengaluru-Karnataka/11291 Ortus Jobshttps://www.ortussolutions.com/about-us/careers Senior ColdFusion CFML Developer (USA TEAM) Desarollador Web (EL SALVADOR TEAM) ForgeBox Module of the WeekCommandBox FusionReactorThis module adds support to enable FusionReactor on the servers you start inside CommandBox.For full docs on this module, go here:https://commandbox.ortusbooks.com/embedded-server/fusionreactor https://www.forgebox.io/view/commandbox-fusionreactor VS Code Hint Tips and Tricks of the WeekSave / Auto SaveBy default, VS Code requires an explicit action to save your changes to disk, Ctrl+S.However, it's easy to turn on Auto Save, which will save your changes after a configured delay or when focus leaves the editor. From the dangerous part of the city of Montevideo, Uruguay in the late ’90s, William started his journey in music at the early age of 11 helping programming music and DJing for a pirate radio station. Since that moment, he never stopped to define his own style and taste of music while improving his technical skills. In 2009 he started to release his own productions under different monikers, releasing several works in digital and physical format. In 2017 things changed when the decision was made to focus exclusively on his new project called William Arist and also the launch of his own record label Perseverancia Records. Since then, he has played with artists such as Anastasia Kristensen, CTRLS, Adriana Lopez, Aleja Sanchez, Dax J, DVS1, Eduardo De La Calle, Ellen Allien, Kolpos, Mekas, Pfirter, P.E.A.R.L., Setaoc Mass, Vinicius Honorio and many more. His eclectic productions have seen his music land on a variety of labels such as Animal Farm (UK), DEAD CERT. Records (UK), Tauten (SRB), Abstraction (CUB), Liberta (UK), Knowledge Imprint (ZA) amongst others. His music has been supported by artists like Richie Hawtin, Charlotte de Witte, Joris Voorn, Truncate, Ben Sims, Cari Lekebusch, Tensal, Dave Clarke, Drumcomplex etc etc… -- 007: William Arist from Montevideo, Uruguay William Arist @ SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/williamarist William Arist @ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/williamaristofficial

How many expletives have you unleashed during the act of podcast editing. I’m guessing a lot. I still let them fly and I’ve been editing audio for almost three decades. Editing is no joke. It can be frustrating, time consuming and if you let it get to you, it can be the death of your podcast-affair. Lots of podcasters decide to edit their own podcast when they start out. And they should. I’m a firm believer that you need to understand the process if you are going to be a podcaster. And, if nothing else, it forces you to listen to your own podcast. Once you’ve done that, if you can afford to hire a professional, then definitely do. It will save a tonne of time and frustration (and maybe even your marriage). That really should be tip #1. Outsource your editing. That could be the only tip you need. Okay… I guess we’re done here. All right, if you insist on editing your own podcast - I have three really good tips that will save your bacon for sure. Tip 1 - Save Your Original File This is just good file hygiene. After your record, BEFORE you start editing, save the original file then copy it and work with the second file. I go over my actual file saving protocol in this episode but I can tell you that if you were to get a peek at my filing system, you would see in THIS episode folder 090-editing-tips_RAW and 090-editing-tips_EDIT. The RAW file is the original recording and it is sacred. I never touch it - except in an emergency and even then, that is only to duplicate it again. Tip 2 - Editing is a Two-Hander If you are only using one hand when you edit, you’re functioning at half-speed. That other hand can be working two. Don’t let half your work force slack off! I explain in this episode exactly what your two hand should be doing but I’ll give you a hint - it involves a mouse and a shortcut key. Tip 3 - Save Your Work Obsessively If you saw me editing, you’d think that I have OCD about saving. It’s automatic for me. I don’t wait until a break in the action, I save as I go. Constantly. Discussion: Now that you have downloaded and set preferences, you need to become familiar with the Arduino Integrated Development Environment, or IDE for short. It works just like a text editor program. I'm only going to cover what I think is important for us to know right now. We do a deeper dive on an as needed basis as we progress through the course. Specifically, in this lesson we'll cover: Selecting an Arduino Board and Serial Port Saving an Arduino File The Editor, Message Area, and Console A Few Other “Good to Know” Items So let's open the Arduino Integrated Development Environment (IDE) and get started. Do this by clicking the Arduino icon. Which Board and Serial Port Should I Use? The first thing we're going to discuss is selecting the correct board. We have to let the Integrated Development Environment know what Arduino board you're using. Go to the “Tools” tab, and then go down to where it says “Board”. You'll notice I selected the Arduino Uno since that is what I will use throughout the course. I recommend that you use an Uno or an Uno derivative throughout the course, as well. This will standardize our work in these lessons. Once you've selected the board, next you need to select your serial port. People can sometimes be intimidated by this technical term, but you don’t have to be. Serial ports are just the different things connected to your computer. The easiest way to find out which of the ports listed is your Arduino is to first unplug the Arduino from the computer. Go to the ports list under the “Tools” tab, and write down the names of these ports. You only need to write enough to differentiate one from the next - maybe the last word or last few letters. Then, close your Arduino IDE. Plug your Arduino board back in via the USB cable to your computer. Open the Arduino IDE. You should now be able to see an additional serial port not on the list you originally wrote down. That will be the serial port to which your Arduino is connected. For Mac, you'll usually see cu or tty after the “dev/”. Those are the common ways Arduino will show up on the serial port for a Mac. For a PC, it shows up as a COM port, but it's hard to know which one it will be. It could be one, two, four, etc. That’s why the best method, although primitive, is just to unplug and plug the Arduino back into that port. Once you’ve chosen the board and port the first time, these settings will stay the same for any subsequent times you reopen the Arduino IDE. The reason I point this out is that if you happen to get a different board at some point, you will have to remember to change the board that is selected. The Arduino File When you open the Arduino IDE for the first time, it will open up a file for you, giving it a default name. That default is sketch, underscore, and the current date. That name also appears at the top of the IDE, along with the version of Arduino you're using. To save this, go to the “File” tab and then to “Save”. It's just like saving any other file. Notice it asks you to save the file in “Documents”. Remember that in Arduino, files are referred to as sketches. So, the collection of our sketches is known as the sketchbook. The sketchbook folder is where all of the sketches we write will be saved. Of course, you can also nest your files in that folder just like you could in any other program where you're saving files. It's really no different. Take a look at the name I chose for my file. There are certain rules you must follow when choosing a name for your sketch. When you're naming a file, you can't use any spaces between the words. One common method is to use an underscore where you would have normally preferred a space. You can't use special characters, either. You can use numbers in the name, but you can't have a number as the first character. Lastly, the names are limited to 64 characters. So, using these rules, name your sketch and save it. You'll see that the name on the tab and at the top of the screen now displays the name of your newly saved sketch. So, saving is really easy. The shortcut command is Ctrl S. There is also a down arrow that you can click. The Editor, Message Area, and Console There are three main areas of the Integrated Development Environment: the editor, the message bar, and the console. The editor is the big white space. It’s where you type the Arduino code. It has number lines down the side - as long as that was one of the preferences you checked from our last lesson on choosing your settings. Right now it shows one through nine. If we were to add more code or move our cursor down further, it would adds numbers as lines are added. I want to point out one thing in this name here. Do you see the little funky looking “s”? Every time you make a change to the sketch that has not been saved, that s will be displayed. If I save the file, it goes away. If I were to type something in the sketch again, the funky little s would come back. It’s just a visual reminder to save your changes. Personally, I am a save fanatic. For just about every single line of code I write, I use the shortcut key Control S to save before I go on to the next line. I want to make sure I don't lose anything in the event that I have an issue with either the Arduino IDE, my computer, unexpected interruptions, or whatever might happen. There is something interesting you might have noticed when you open a new sketch in Arduino. It auto-populates two of the mandatory functions for coding in Arduino. This is why you see void setup an void loop. We'll talk about these in depth later, but it's perfectly normal for these to show up. It’s just a way of helping you save time when you code. On top of the editor area are two very important buttons. The first one is a check mark. It is the Verify button. When you click this, the code gets compiled. Compiling, as discussed before, is taking the human readable code that we've written and translating it into machine code. As it compiles, the program will point out any errors found in that code. It also does some optimization. This is a way behind the scenes concept that you don't have to worry about right now, though. You constantly want to check for errors in your code. I like to verify my code at almost every line of code I write along the way. The more you verify, the more quickly you can identify where you might have introduced an error into the code, i.e. find and fix a bug. We'll be using this verify button all the time. The shortcut key for verify is Command R or Control R. You can also verify by going to the “Sketch” tab. That other button is the Upload button. That takes all of the code that we've written and uploads it to the Arduino board. When you click that button and look at your Arduino board (assuming that it’s hooked up to your computer via the USB cable), you'll see two lights blinking rapidly. That is the TX and RX buttons. This is a good visual indicator that you have a good connection between the Arduino board and the computer. The IDE is recognizing that you have a board hooked up. In other words, the lights tell you that the code is successfully being uploaded to the board. The shortcut key to upload is Control U or Command U. It is available in the dropdown under the “Sketch” tab, as well. The second main area of the IDE is this blue bar. It is the message bar. It will display information about what you've done recently in the program. For example, I just uploaded. You can see that it says, “Done Uploading.” If I press Control S to save, it would say, “Done Saving.” There are other pertinent messages that display while you are using the program. The third main area of the IDE is the black space below the message bar. It is called the Console. Now, you probably won't hear it referred to as the console very often. Many people just call it the error section, or some other generic term. If you want to increase the console’s space, there is a bar you can drag up. It may be hard to see, so I put a box around it. The console displays the error messages. It will tell you information about the current operation that you did. For illustration purposes, let me introduce an error into the code and verify it. I’ll just type a crude, uncoded line somewhere in the editor area. You can see that we get definitely get a reaction out of the Arduino IDE. First, the message bar gives us a quick note saying that you wasn’t declared. Again, don't worry about understanding the error itself or any of the terminology displayed. I just want you to see where different types of information shows up. Then, in the console much more detailed information about the error is displayed. It tells you what file it was in, what function it was in, and even the line of code. Here it says the error was in line three. If we look back up at line three in the editor, we can see that it gets highlighted. That's where we can start looking for our error. Unfortunately, it will not always point out the correct line of code for the error. You might have to do a little searching around, but that is a discussion for another time and another lesson. You now know the three big pieces of the Arduino IDE. We walked through the editor, the message bar, and the console. Miscellaneous Tidbits There are a few final items we should discuss that are good to know. At the very bottom of the IDE is a number. Currently ours shows the number three. That simply refers to the line of code where your cursor is located. It seems like such a small detail, but it is very handy. Once you begin to work with larger and larger sketches, it may be harder to keep track of your cursor. This is especially true if you decide not to display line numbers down the side. Also, in the far right corner you'll see some additional information. It is the name of the Arduino board and which serial port that you identified earlier that you’re using. In the top right, there is a little magnifying glass. This is for the Serial Monitor. If you click it, a window like this opens: The Serial Monitor window allows us to see communication occurring between the Arduino and the computer, and vice versa. We'll have an entire lesson later down the road about the Serial Monitor and communications. For now, just know that the button is there. The shortcut key for the Serial Monitor is Shift-Control(or Command)-M. Now Get Going! You now know enough information to start using the Arduino IDE. You can see it's not too complex. The IDE is very simple and streamlined. Arduino was designed for ease of use. There's not a bunch of bells and whistles that can sometimes get in your way. I have no doubt you’ll be an Arduino pro in no time.
What a wicked show we have for you folks! Our next guest, hailing from Copenhagen via Moscow, is a young artist who has been making quite a name for herself over the past couple of years, ANASTASIA KRISTENSEN. Having released on Monasterio's debut release from Moscow and now co-running Count 0 alongside Ctrls and Funeral Future out of Copenhagen, Anastasia is definitely a tour de force that's only getting started. Her eclecticism in musical taste is wide-reaching and encompassing, and is always elegantly manifested in all of her techno journeys, be it inside the club playing live feeding off the energy from the crowd or in the studio mixing, producing borrowing from her knowledge on electronic music amassed during her teenage years. For us, she put together a smashing hour of top-notch techno, full of superb and unreleased cuts that will surely keep your heart-rate in check. Coming up for Anastasia on the production front, is a remix on BLD Tape due next month and an original work for the Black V/A series on Nous Disques due in October. And that same month you can catch this fine laureate in action, where she's been billed to wreak havoc at the Culture Box in the Danish capital for the Perc Trax showcase. Without further adieu, here's Anastasia live in the mix.

Hailing from Copenhagen, Denmark, our next guest is one heck of a DJ and a terrific producer, with a history in electronic music dating back to the 2000s. Since a few years ago though, he has been delivering top-notch, no-nonsense techno under his CTRLS alias for Token. Also, having dabbled as one-half the Northern Structures duo, Troels' background is versatile and extensive (including a long affair with Drum & Bass). It is due to all this history that his mixes are unique and quite extraordinary. What he put together for us is no doubt an astounding 80-minute journey rich with all kinds of multifaceted techno. Cursing the raw, the harsh, and the pounding - it is a distinct pleasure to have Troels be part of the podcast. Without further adieu, this is Ctrls. Enjoy! Troels Knudsen lives in Copenhagen, Denmark and has been immersed in music for most of his life. This focus has mostly been fixed on the club world. And he spent the last 10+ years producing, performing, engineering and dj'ing various electronic genres around Europe and beyond. This activity generated the excentric Pyro drum'n'bass moniker, house works as part of 2400 Operator on Underground Quality and the industrial tinged techno project Northern Structures on Sonic Groove. After a few years of working in groups it was time to get back to solo work. In 2012 the Ctrls project was iniated with the release of the Interface EP on the new homebase Token Records. A remix of Ø/[Phase]'s Binary Opposition was the follow up, and by then Ctrls tracks had worked their way into the sets of some of the most notable techno djs across the world. Troels continues to develop his fast paced and futuristic style, seeking out the various nuances of techno and the surrounding genres. Future plans for the project hold more Token Records output as well as dedication to engaged and detailed dj'ing. Tracklist: 1. Lucy - All that Noise 2. Mike Parker - Lustration 4 3.
