A key source of opposition to authoritarian regimes in recent history has come from universities and colleges. Trump has been attacking the independence of American universities, demanding they submit to his requirements and using massive funding cuts as his weapon. David Cole, formerly National Legal Director of the ACLU, has our analysis. Also: Mahmoud Khalil is the Palestinian student activist at Columbia arrested and jailed by ICE. The Trump administration intends to revoke his status as a permanent resident—a green-card holder--and deport him -- they say, to protect Jewish students on campus. That's clearly a violation of freedom of speech. But is deporting Palestinian student activists a good way to protect Jewish students? David Meyers comments--he teaches Jewish history at UCLA.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

'Niks,' zegt Vedder. 'Mag ik even kijken?' vraagt de agent. 'Nee,' zegt Vedder. “What the water rig is at its core is a mobile water treatment technology, and it dramatically changed the lives of the people living on that site.”Having clean, drinkable water is essential for everyone, no matter where they are. For some on-site workers on remote oil and gas drilling sites, this means transporting in large amounts of bottled water. The result is a large amount of plastic waste from the bottles and air pollution from the extra traffic.WaterFleet provides an alternative solution. Their water treatment technology means that a mobile rig can be hooked up to an existing well or water storage source on site and provide people with clean potable water on tap. As the rig processes the water, it automatically and continually monitors the quality to ensure it's safe. WateFleet also uses this technology to provide temporary water solutions to areas that have been affected by natural disasters. Our producer Eva Ruth went to the WaterFleet headquarters in San Antonio, Texas to meet the Director of Business Intelligence, David Meyers. He explains WaterFleet's mission statement and takes us inside one of the water rigs.Find out more about the WaterFleet here.Find out more about ServiceMax here.Your host is Paul Haimes from industrial software company PTC.Episodes are released bi-weekly. Donald Lee Hassler, a Texas parolee, has been charged with capital murder in the mysterious disappearance and suspected murder of 57-year-old Sheryl Siddall. Siddall, a grandmother residing in Horseshoe Lake Estates in north Liberty County, northeast of Houston, vanished without a trace on September 18, leaving authorities and her distraught family searching for answers. The ordeal began when Siddall's concerned niece reported her missing, triggering a welfare check at her home. What deputies discovered inside Siddall's residence only deepened the sense of dread—a trail of blood on the kitchen floor and cabinets. Despite a thorough search in the community and the lake behind her house, Siddall has not been found. When deputies arrived at Siddall's home, Hassler, an acquaintance of Siddall's answered the door. His assertion that Siddall had left to visit her sister in Oklahoma and that he was in the process of buying her house raised immediate suspicions. Authorities, however, found Siddall's belongings—wallet, purse, ID, and vehicle—inside her home, contradicting Hassler's claims. Complicating matters, Siddall's phone, which last pinged a cellphone tower near her residence on September 11 before going silent, has yet to be located. Hassler, who was initially booked into the Liberty County Jail on a charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm—a parole violation—remained at the center of the investigation. As the case unfolded, investigators discovered eight firearms in a box trailer belonging to Hassler and in his pickup truck. The additional charges intensified the severity of the situation, marking Hassler as the prime suspect in Siddall's disappearance. Following his arrest, Hassler's lack of cooperation with authorities became apparent. Deputies stated that he pleaded the Fifth Amendment against self- incrimination, heightening suspicions surrounding his involvement. Hassler was subsequently held without bond, a decision made as the search for Siddall continued. Unfortunately, a date for the resumption of the search was not immediately available. Liberty County Sheriff's Capt. David Meyers expressed determination, stating, “We still want to find Siddall, and we will not give up until we do! We want to help bring some sort of closure to her family." The family, grappling with uncertainty, has already initiated discussions about a memorial service for Siddall. In a month marked by unsettling developments, Siddall's family disclosed that she has no sister in Oklahoma, contradicting Hassler's claim. Adding another layer of complexity, Siddall's family filed a petition against Hassler, alleging that he forged Siddall's signature on a deed on June 30, granting himself general power of attorney. In a testament to the challenges faced by Siddall's family, a fundraising page has been established to alleviate the financial burden associated with the civil case and Siddall's funeral. The fundraiser aims to support legal expenses, cover funeral costs, and provide assistance to Siddall's children, who have taken time off work to search for their missing mother. On the surface, the opportunity to transition on-farm energy to electricity seems limited at best. Farm jobs and farm equipment are big, and often require a level of power that electric options have historically been unable to meet. But between advances in electric vehicles and shifting dynamics in farm operations, those limitations are starting to dissolve. So we've started to wonder: is on-farm electrification at a tipping point? Today we've asked David Meyers, CEO and Founder at GridTractor, to help us explore that question. His perch at the head of an agricultural fleet electrification and charging services company gives him a unique perspective on what comes next for energy use on the farm level, and what that could mean not only for the industry, but for electrification across the economy as well. A murder investigation is underway by the Liberty County Sheriff's Office after the fatal shooting of a 37-year-old Ames woman at a home on CR 2414 in Hull early Monday morning. According to Capt. David Meyers, a spokesperson for the sheriff's office, deputies were dispatched in reference to a shooting around 5:27 a.m. When deputies arrived, they began lifesaving measures on the victim, identified as Tangela Stephens, who later succumbed to her injuries. Stephens was shot inside a one-bedroom apartment located behind the main house on the property of her boyfriend Martin Toth. Toth's son, Aurelio Toth, is identified as the murder suspect. “We learned that Ms. Stephens had been allowed to stay overnight at Mr. Toth's property. She was sleeping in a one-bedroom apartment behind Mr. Toth's house. The son was mad that she was there and got into an argument with his dad. At some point in the argument, the son, carrying a shotgun, followed his dad to the apartment where he shot Ms. Stephens, killing her,” Meyers said. The consortium is comprised of Monarch Tractor, Gridtractor, Rhombus Energy Solutions, Current Ways, and Polaris Energy Services. "With grid shutdowns, hardworking farmers lose significant time, resources and money in a business where America's growers already struggle to see the profits of their hard labor," says Praveen Penmetsa, CEO and co-founder of Monarch Tractor. "Our tractor's ability to provide exportable power and act as a mobile generator will help keep the lights on for California's farms even when the grid is down." In addition to emergency scenarios, the consortium will develop and demonstrate technology to enable farmers to employ tractors to respond to conditions on the power grid by charging and discharging batteries to supply irrigation pumps and other on-farm loads in response to dynamic prices and demand response events. The consortium will develop hardware, software and communications technologies to link tractors and charging equipment to fleet operation centers and grid management systems. "Farm equipment electrification can not only provide dramatic savings for growers but enable them to take control of their energy," says David Meyers, CEO of Gridtractor. "For the grid, agriculture is one sector in California with the electrical infrastructure already in place to support rapid EV adoption. With the backing of the CEC, this project will support building, deploying and testing the technologies required to take advantage of that opportunity." We have a 2022 post-election show with a twist. Instead of focusing on which party is up or down, we open the hood and examine the engine of our democracy. Voters delivered a clear verdict: Most election deniers were defeated as many voters, especially independents, split their ballots, and shunned the extremes. Our guests are Layla Zaidane, President and CEO of Millennial Action Project— the nation's largest nonpartisan organization of young lawmakers— and David Meyers, founding Executive Editor of the democracy newsletter, The Fulcrum. In the days before the election, the media was full of warnings, and perhaps some hyperbole, about the perilous state of American democracy. Both of our guests and podcast co-hosts agree that many of the results were reassuring for the guardrails of the electoral system."I think when the dust settles we're going to feel pretty good about this election," Layla told us. "Things went really well," said David. "The continued use of voting-by-mail and early voting has gone a long way towards making sure more people had the opportunity to vote and not wait in very long lines."We also examine the arguments over Ranked-Choice Voting, open primaries, and the need for a quicker vote account in some states where results took well over a week to come through. In their conversation after the interview, Jim and Richard debate voting-my-mail, early voting, reforming the primaries, and how to encourage states to make improvements in vote tabulation. Richard favors limited action by Congress, but Jim is vigorously opposed to any federal reforms or interference in how states conduct their elections.Recommendation: Richard is reading "Broken News. Every black belt remembers the time when martial arts became a passion. It happened to me at age eight. My brother took me to see a Bruce Lee movie, and to this day I can close my eyes and feel the emotion that overwhelmed me as I watched the screen. At that moment I totally fell in love with the power of martial arts, but it would be many years before I found the physical and spiritual paths to black belt. Once I began that journey, however, the martial arts and the art of teaching became central element of my life. Bruce Lee gave me inspiration, but the following years were filled with frustration because there were no martial art schools near my home. I finally realized my dreams when I moved to California and had the great fortune to enter Steve Sexton's Hapkido school in Canoga Park. Through Steve's selfless guidance I achieved black belt in 1981 and I became an assistant instructor at the school. In those early years I viewed instructing as a sideline while I remained focused on my personal training. With time and maturity I grew nearer to the spiritual and philosophical center of the martial arts and I began to realize the tremendous personal rewards of teaching. After some months of uncertainty, I decided to completely redefine and reshape my life, and at Steve Sexton's urging, I took on the role of school owner and became a professional instructor of Hapkido. I named my school "Team Karate Center" because I became devoted to the idea that the instructors and the students should work together, as a team, so that each student can find and create their "individual art" within the traditions of Hapkido. I believe that no matter what individual qualities a student has - natural talents or special challenges - there is profound value in the martial arts for everyone. Consequently, the elementary principles at our school are centered on the teamwork required for all of us - teacher, instructor, student and parent (for our younger students) - to identify and advance this value. Currently, the school follows a multi-cultural approach that is grounded in function and usefulness. In the basic program we focus on traditional physical skills, and we stress the development of individual responsibility and core character strengths. Advanced students are introduced to an extension of Hapkido that I call Blend. From the very early years my training was based on the concept of "thinking outside the box." I evolved Blend, in this way, to move from style-based techniques to versatile, range-based frameworks. This combines Hapkido with certain aspects of Brazilian and Japanese Jujitsu, American Boxing, Wing Chun and the Filipino arts. Over the past 20 years my physical and spiritual advancements have been influenced by many remarkable people. I have had the cherished privilege of studying with Grand Master Ji Han Jae. I am, and will always be, indebted to Master Steve Sexton and I continue to extend my personal growth with the generosity of David Meyers (grappling) and Ron Balicki (Filipino martial arts: trapping, stick and knife techniques). As a teacher, I have always viewed learning as a fun and rewarding experience. I look to this philosophy, within the discipline and tradition of Hapkido, to inspire and motivate the students and the assistant instructors at our school, and I offer the multi-faceted challenge of Blend to give advanced students a contemporary martial art that is filled with unique insight and reward. "The martial arts training process is a powerful life-defining interpersonal experience that gets to the heart of the matter. It is your opportunity to alter your capacities to accomplish and to stand powerfully as the gift that you are and the difference that you make."
