A recent Washington Post article titled “A North Korean defector captivated U.S. media. Some question her story” highlights the many appearances Yeonmi Park has made on right-wing news outlets over the past few years. Scholars and solidarity activists have been pointing out the serious holes in Park's stories since she started getting attention. But even the Post has pushed her propaganda, running an op-ed by her in 2014 that they admit was co-written with a fellow at the Koch-founded right-wing Atlas Network, calling for a capitalist counterrevolution in the country. Park is part of a long tradition of outright US lies about North Korea, which it is still at war with.To get deeper into the history, we're joined by Derek Ford. He's an author, visiting professor at Korea University in Tokyo, and organizer with the Global Peace forum on Korea. He also led the last delegation of US citizens to the DPRK before the travel ban. What is the role of education within radical and revolutionary movements? Is the classroom a political space? How do traditions of Marxian thought and pedagogy frame those questions? In this episode, Derek R. Ford offers a crash orientation to the terrain of Marxist educational theory and practice, with a focus on its dynamic expressions in resistance movements, organizing campaigns, and more formal schooling contexts. Topics include Marxian traditions of education, dialogical pedagogy, practices of interpretation in a so-called "post-truth" era, and cultivating learning spaces where all people can experience the freedom and invitation to learn, question, explore, and build new ways of living and being.Derek Ford is an organizer, author, and teacher with deep ties to Left movement spaces. Currently an Assistant Professor of Education Studies at DePauw University, their books include Teaching the Actuality of Revolution: Aesthetics, Pedagogy, and the Sensations of Struggle (2023), Communist Study: Education for the Commons (2022), Encountering Education: Elements for a Marxist Pedagogy (2022), Inhuman Educations: Jean-Francois Lyotard, Pedagogy, Thought (2021), and many edited books and articles on eco and urban pedagogies and politics. The following interview, facilitated by Derek Ford, took place via e-mail during June and July in preparation for Black August, when progressive organizers and activists deepen our study of and commitment to the Black struggle in the U.S. and the anti-colonial and anti-imperialist class struggles worldwide. During this time, we wanted to provide a unique and accessible resource on Walter Rodney, the revolutionary Guyanese organizer, theorist, pedagogue, political economist, and what many call a “guerrilla intellectual.” Liberation School recently republished Rodney's essay on George Jackson here (https://www2.liberationschool.org/walter-rodney-on-george-jackson/). Derek arrives to Ian's office quoting Jeff Bridges after having gotten plastic surgery to look exactly like James Bond actor Roger Moore in a sign he's clearly a very confused and troubled young man. In this episode of By Any Means Necessary, hosts Sean Blackmon and Jacquie Luqman are joined by Leo Flores, Latin American Campaign Coordinator for CODEPINK: Women for Peace, to talk about the failed maritime invasion of Venezuela this weekend, how both public taunts (and leaked recordings from the former Green Beret who plotted the mission) undercut claims by both Juan Guaido and US the government that they had no prior knowledge of the ill-fated "terrorist" campaign, and where all of this fits into the ongoing ruling-class "plot to overthrow the government of Venezuela."In the second segment, Sean and Jacquie are joined by organizer and educator Derek Ford to talk about reemergence of Workers Party of Korea chairman Kim Jong-Un after a multi-week media frenzy in which it was widely speculated that he had died, the "deep, extensive ideological network" behind such disinformation campaigns, and how the North Korean defector "industry" is ultimately subsidized by the US government as part of its long-term goal of regime change in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. In the third segment, Sean and Jacquie are joined by Dr. Jack Rasmus, economist, radio show host, & author of 'The Scourge of Neoliberalism,' to talk about the numerous states attempting to "re-open their economies" today as the ruling class continues to demand that economic growth take precedent over public health, why a second wave of the virus could be even more devastating than the one we're facing currently, and why recovering economically from the crisis is likely to take a decade or more.Later in the show, Sean and Jacquie are joined by Brandon Sutton, host of The Discourse podcast, to talk about why the liberal establishment's attempts to rehabilitate the image of George W. Bush could one day extend to Donald Trump as well, why it seems the allegations that Joe Biden sexually assaulted Tara Reade are finally gaining traction and beginning to affect the Democratic front-runner's campaign, and how the cultural hegemony exerted by the US government ensures a virtually limitless supply of willing servants of imperialism.

On today's episode of Loud & Clear, Brian Becker and John Kiriakou discuss the final impeachment vote. The Senate today voted to acquit President Trump on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, putting an end to the impeachment drama. The vote was predictable and along party lines, with only Republican Senator Mitt Romney voting to acquit on one of the charges. Pundits are saying that the President comes out of the experience stronger politically, with Democrats the ones taking the hit. The results of the Iowa caucuses are still not completely in. The real news here, though, is that the Democratic Party has fallen flat on its face when it comes to actually carrying out one of the most important elections in a presidential campaign. Lee Camp, a writer, comedian, activist, journalist, and host of the television show “Redacted Tonight,” on RT America, whose latest book is called “Bullet Points & Punch Lines,” and whose work is at leecamp.com, joins the show. Joshua Schulte is a 31-year-old former CIA computer engineer who today will go on trial, accused of leaking what’s known as the Vault 7 documents, the most highly classified computer hacking secrets that the CIA possessed. When the documents went public in May 2017, Wikileaks said in a statement that the whistleblower “wanted to raise policy questions that need to be debated in public, including whether the CIA’s hacking abilities exceeded its mandated powers.” And his supporters allege that authorities even set him up on fake child pornography charges. Brian and John speak with Bill Binney, a former NSA technical director who became a legendary national security whistleblower. President Trump last night delivered his State of the Union address, turning the traditionally dull event into a re-election spectacle pushing far-right politics from every angle. Ted Rall, an award-winning editorial cartoonist and columnist whose work is at www.rall.com, joins the show. A new report published by the National Center for Homeless Education has found that there are more than 1.5 million public school students who were homeless at some point during the 2017-2018 school year. It’s the highest number in 12 years, and it points to the ongoing failure of local, state, and federal governments to address housing affordability. And just as importantly, homelessness has a ripple effect among children, causing developmental delays and poor health. Derek Ford, an assistant professor of education studies at DePauw University and a community organizer whose latest book is “Education and the Production of Space,” joins Brian and John. Wednesday’s weekly series, In the News, is where the hosts look at the most important ongoing developments of the week and put them into perspective. But that’s not good enough for demonstrators, who are continuing their protests and are demanding that he resign immediately. British Prime Minister Theresa May demanded today that Iran release a UK-flagged oil tanker that it had seized late last week in the Strait of Hormuz. She said the ship was seized under “false and illegal pretenses.” But the British continue to hold an Iranian tanker that they seized a week earlier off the coast of Gibraltar. And they took that action at the behest of National Security Advisor John Bolton. Dr. Zeinab Ghasemi, a professor of American studies at the University of Tehran, joins the show. Ukranian President Volodymir Zelensky’s party is projected to win a majority of seats in the country’s 450-seat parliament. It would be the first time since Ukraine’s independence in 1991 that a party has won an outright majority. But what does that mean for foreign policy, especially toward NATO and Russia? Brian and John speak with Bruce Gagnon, a contributor to Foreign Policy In Focus, and Jeremy Kuzmarov, a professor of American history whose latest book is “The Russians Are Coming, Again: The First Cold War as Tragedy, the Second as Farce”. Pyongyang, the capital of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, or North Korea, was once called the "Jerusalem of the East" because there were so many Christians there. After a brutal war with the US left the country in rubble, however, things changed--but how? On today's episode of Loud & Clear, Brian Becker and John Kiriakou are joined by William Pepper, an attorney who has worked for years to prove the role of the government in the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He and Dr. King allied around the anti-war movement and he continued to represent the King family after Dr. King’s death.Tomorrow, April 4, marks the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. Recent polls show that a majority of Americans do not believe that his vision of a just society has been realized. Many Americans—including the King family—also question the official story about who was responsible for the assassination. Donald Trump announced late last week plans to meet at the invitation of Korean leader Kim Jong Un, breaking suddenly with the administration’s aggressive annihilation rhetoric. Does this signal a shift in U.S. policy on the Korean peninsula? Just as importantly, what does the DPRK hope to gain from normalized relations with the United States?Teachers in West Virginia win a victory for 21st century labor. A series of statewide wildcat strikes ended with a 5 percent pay raise for state employees, a freeze in health insurance costs, and an end to intrusive neoliberal health “monitoring” system linked to their insurance. What significance does the strike have for changing labor relations in the United States?Democratic turnout in the 2018 Texas primary increased 98 percent over previous midterm primaries. The Democratic Party is predicting a blue wave in the 2018 elections, which would be a huge upset for this deeply conservative state. But how likely is this to come to fruition, and if it does, what policy effects might this have on the national level? We are joined for these discussions by Derek Ford, education chair at the Hampton Institute, a working-class think tank; Scott Heins, a freelance journalist who wrote about the West Virginia teachers' strike for the Intercept; and Andrew Dobbs, a writer and socialist activist.
Organizer and educator Derek Ford gives a historical context for the current imperialist aggression surrounding the DPRK, explains the 'Juche' ideology, and recounts some firsthand propaganda-shattering experiences from his travels inside the country. The day after US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson announced the travel ban for US citizens to North Korea, Derek Ford traveled to the country on a fact-finding delegation. In this episode, he shares many of those firsthand experiences with me, and discusses how what he saw in person was quite different from the propaganda he'd been told in the US. Along with this he discusses the 'Juche' ideology, which is essentially the guiding philosophical ideology of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, and gives a quick history lesson on both the Juche ideology and the country itself.

We got a chance to get some of our own #TheoryTime in with The Lit Crit Guy himself, talking about Roland Boer's book Criticism of Heaven, and specifically a chapter Boer wrote on the French communist Louis Althusser's Catholic undercurrents. (You might remember Derek Ford gesturing toward Althusser's Catholicism way back in episode 3.) We try to sort out some different relationships between religion and Marxism as articulated by Boer, and see if we can extend his taxonomy to Christian anarchists, too. We then chat a little about Althusser's "Catholic Marxism" (as Boer calls it) and how Christianity really does seem to lead down the path of communism (surprise!).★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

The general election campaign is in full swing. After a bruising and often absurd primary fight in both of the major parties, the political situation looks set to intensify even further. Historic numbers of people are planning on voting for a third-party, and the Democrats’ lesser-evil rhetoric is ramping up in response. There is no doubt that Trump is a reprehensible bigot and an open supporter of torture - banning muslims and more - but the lesser-of-two-evils argument conceals just how “evil” Hillary Clinton and the Democratic Party really is. Today, we spend the show examining Clinton and her party - their foreign policy, their loyalty to Wall Street and the underhanded, essentially fraudulent methods they employed to extinguish the Sanders insurgency. Brian is joined for the full hour to discuss these issues by Dr. Anthony Monteiro, W.E.B. DuBois scholar and member of the Black Radical Organizing Collective, Jane Cutter, editor of Liberationnews.org, Derek Ford, Assistant Professor of Education Studies at DePauw University who is the co-author of Marx, Capital, and Education: Towards a Critical Pedagogy of Becoming, and in studio by Walter Smolarek, producer of Loud and Clear.
