Everyone is asking AI about their diet. Recipes, meal plans, protein targets, what to eat for weight loss. And some of what it spits out is genuinely useful. Some of it is wrong. And some of it, as one American celebrity found out the hard way after buying a fake celebrity-endorsed Jell-O diet, can actually make you unwell. This week Leanne and Susie give their honest take on exactly what AI can and cannot do when it comes to nutrition, where it is actually worth using, and the specific reasons why it will never replace the kind of personalised advice that accounts for who you actually are. Then they go deep on one of the most-requested topics the show has ever had: a comprehensive guide to the best gluten-free products in Australian supermarkets right now. In this episode: The Jell-O diet scandal that kicked off this conversation, why fake celebrity diet endorsements generated by AI are now a genuine public health concern, and how to spot them Where AI genuinely helps with nutrition, including getting recipe ideas from pantry leftovers, converting a meal plan into a shopping list, and even making your food photography look better The critical limitations of AI diet advice: why it defaults to population averages, cannot account for your individual nutrient needs, does not know the Australian supermarket, and will simply agree with whatever you tell it rather than pushing back when you are wrong Why accountability is the single biggest thing AI cannot replicate, and why that matters more than most people realise when it comes to actually getting results The gluten-free product guide for Australian supermarkets in 2025: Leanne and Susie's current recommendations across bread, crackers, cereals, frozen meals, sauces, snacks, and more, including the specific brands and products they actually recommend to their celiac and gluten-intolerant clients Why newly diagnosed celiac clients make one consistent mistake with gluten-free eating, and the simple shift that saves money and dramatically improves nutrition at the same time The Health Lab Pistachio and Rose Protein Super Treat reviewed: beautiful packaging, white chocolate as the first ingredient, and 12% saturated fat. Is it a protein bar or a chocolate bar with good PR? How to eat well after leaving home on a tight budget: the smartest protein sources for young people who have zero cooking experience, very little money, and a toaster Shop Designed by Dietitians: If your diet needs a boost of protein, creatine, magnesium, or collagen, explore the evidence-based range formulated by two Australian dietitians at designedbydietitians.com Keep sharing The Nutrition Couch with the people in your life who need it. Sound familiar? You might be training consistently, making better food choices, and putting in real effort. But fat loss is not just about effort. It is about accuracy and consistency over time. The convergence of strategy, consistency, habits, and routine behaviours. As a Sports Dietitian, this is something I see all the time. People are close. Very close sometimes. But a few small bottlenecks are enough to slow or completely stall progress. The good news is that once you identify them, they are usually very fixable. Today is not about the fix itself (that is individualised and requires working closely with you), but instead about identifying reasons and knowing where to next. In this episode, I share five of the most common fat loss bottlenecks that might be holding you back (that you might not even be clocking). DISCLAIMER: The information in this video is for guidance only and is not individualised advice for you! Strength Changes Everything
Old Food Pyramid Versus New: Rethinking Decades of Diet Advice

Strength Changes Everything

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 24, 2026 22:17

Are you still following the old food pyramid? At the start of 2026, the USDA released a new food pyramid that completely flipped the rules on carbs, fats, and protein. Amy Hudson and Dr. James Fisher break down the differences between the old and new food pyramids. They discuss practical ways to apply these changes to your daily meals, why some foods were removed, and how to rethink nutrition for real results. Tune in to learn how to eat smarter, cut out processed foods, and finally follow guidelines that actually support your health. Amy and Dr. Fisher explain the key issues with the old food pyramid.  The 1992 model recommended six to eleven servings of carbohydrates per day, making breads, pasta, and rice the largest portion of daily food intake. That structure reflected the belief at the time that carbohydrates should dominate every meal. Amy breaks down how the old food pyramid organized foods. After grains came fruits and vegetables, followed by dairy and fish, then meat in smaller portions. Fats, oils, and sweets were to be consumed sparingly. Dr. Fisher explains why fat was the villain in traditional nutrition advice. The old pyramid taught that carbohydrates were good while fats and oils should be avoided. Even foods like meat had question marks because of their fat content. Amy shares what stands out most about the new food pyramid. Protein-rich foods and vegetables sit at the top, followed by healthy fats, with fruit slightly lower. Whole grains remain, but highly processed breads, cereals, and pastas are noticeably absent. Dr. Fisher explains why the new model prioritizes real, whole foods. Ultra-processed snacks, sugary products, and artificial sweeteners are nowhere to be seen because they are not necessary for a healthy diet. Learn why whole foods are far more satisfying and nutrient-dense. Highly processed grains often deliver calories without meaningful protein, fiber, or fat. Whole foods provide the nutrients that actually help regulate hunger and support health. Amy shares what it was like growing up in the low-fat era. Many recommendations were influenced by research funded by the sugar industry, which encouraged people to fear dietary fat. The result was a wave of low-fat foods that replaced fat with added sugar. Why healthy fats are no longer the enemy. Amy explains that fat itself is not what drives fat storage in the body. Excess sugar intake plays a much larger role in promoting weight gain. How to build a diet around the principles of the modern food pyramid. Focus on whole foods, high-quality proteins, plenty of vegetables, and healthy fats. Keep processed foods and refined grains out of your diet. Dr. Fisher explains how nutrition guidance has shifted in the same way exercise science has evolved. Old training advice like "three sets of ten" once dominated resistance training. Evidence-based approaches now emphasize more efficient, focused strength training methods. Amy shares how combining modern nutrition with strength training can transform your health.  Learn why the updated food pyramid represents a meaningful shift in public health guidance. Amy and Dr. Fisher highlight how it reflects a clearer understanding of human nutrition. Dr. Fisher explains why personal training should evolve the same way nutrition advice has. Just like the old food pyramid was built on outdated assumptions about carbohydrates and fat, much of traditional gym advice still follows outdated rules. Evidence-based coaching focuses on what actually improves strength, health, and long-term results. According to Amy, prioritizing protein, whole foods, and resistance training works together to support body composition and long-term health. When nutrition and personal training follow the same evidence-based principles, the results become far more sustainable.     Mentioned in This Episode: The Exercise Coach - Get 2 Free Sessions! This question has been asked many a times or at least has been thought about by many, let's be real. For better or for worse, the nutrition space is the balancing act of what we as humans need to be eating or should be eating for a given outcome and the natural desire for comfort and indulgence in the form of “fun foods”. So how does this intersection come into play when it comes to our strategies and the results we want? Can one eat “junk foods” and be ok and if so, how much is ok?This is a very nuanced and contextual topic but let's give you some insightful direction at least. In this episode, I answer the question of whether or not it's okay to eat “junk food” and still get results (as an athlete or in fat loss). DISCLAIMER: The information in this video is for guidance only and is not individualised advice for you! #341: Bad Diet Advice Really Isn't About the Diet

If you're breathing, it's assumed you've been exposed to bad diet advice. Growing up in the '80s and '90s, I lived through what some consider the peak of 'crazy diet advice.' From cabbage soup to grapefruit diets and liquid fasts, the '90s were anything short of one wild idea to the next that might help someone achieve their desired outcomes. Bad diet advice didn't just emerge in the last few decades; history proves it has been circulating throughout different millenniums. It's part of our history and still part of our culture. Yet, under the surface, there is more to dieting than meets the eye. It may feel like an approach to reach a better destination, whether through weight loss or another metric, but dieting creates a sense of safety, no matter how artificial it may be. It feels strange to combine dieting and safety—even contradictory. But if you dig deeper, you'll find that people seek diets to create order in what feels chaotic or dysregulated. They seek a system that provides safety when they don't feel safe. Safety is a human need (not a wish), and diets provide just enough safety to keep people needing them. In the podcast, I share a shift in understanding diet culture. I also share where it's led us astray and how to use it to better your life. Bad diet advice is only bad because we misunderstand what we need. This is different from your average conversation about bad diet advice. It's deeper and yet more profound.
