In Wandering Games (MIT Press, 2022), Melissa Kagen analyzes wandering within different game worlds, viewed through the lenses of work, colonialism, gender, and death. Wandering in games can be a theme, a formal mode, an aesthetic metaphor, or a player action. It can mean walking, escaping, traversing, meandering, or returning. Kagen introduces the concept of “wandering games,” exploring the uses of wandering in a variety of game worlds. She shows how the much-derided Walking Simulator—a term that began as an insult, a denigration of games that are less violent, less task-oriented, or less difficult to complete—semi-accidentally tapped into something brilliant: the vast heritage and intellectual history of the concept of walking in fiction, philosophy, pilgrimage, performance, and protest. Kagen examines wandering in a series of games that vary widely in terms of genre, mechanics, themes, player base, studio size, and funding, giving close readings to Return of the Obra Dinn, Eastshade, Ritual of the Moon, 80 Days, Heaven's Vault, Death Stranding, and The Last of Us Part II. Exploring the connotations of wandering within these different game worlds, she considers how ideologies of work, gender, colonialism, and death inflect the ways we wander through digital spaces. Overlapping and intersecting, each provides a multifaceted lens through which to understand what wandering does, lacks, implies, and offers. Kagen's account will attune game designers, players, and scholars to the myriad possibilities of the wandering ludic body. After a random discussion on set one day my guest was offered the chance to jump in the vocal booth and enthusiastically said yes.  In this episode my guest describes how she feels she's the Harrison Ford of the voiceover world! After a period of studying, becoming a lawyer, and enjoying gaming recreationally, she leapt into the fun world of video game voice acting.  Her top tip?  Talk about the things you love enthusiastically. You never know the opportunities that will arise!  Gemma Laurelle is an Australian actor specialising in voicing video game characters and voicing game trailers. Gemma works with studios around the world, voice acting in Warframe, Path of Exile and Eastshade, and voicing game trailers such as EVE Online and Last Epoch. A regular guest speaker at PAX and Game convention panels, and having launched an online course for beginners looking to voice video games, Gemma loves to share insights to help others looking to forge a video game voice acting career. Having fun and creating something with other people brings Gemma a world of joy and she feels makes voice acting an incredible career. Being free to play in the booth and create believable characters is one of Gemma's main loves in terms of acting. Video games, being so driven by the story, are such a challenging area for voice actors; getting out of your head and into your body. Listen as we explore this fun part of voiceovers together in this episode.  Are you ready to take your voiceover career to the next level? The Voiceover Network is an organisation for voiceover professionals providing voiceover training, webinars, The Buzz magazine, support, networking events and an amazing VO community. If you are thinking of getting into voiceover work or if you already work in this area and just want to know what's going on in the industry – then this podcast is for you. Well, it’s official. Microsoft have sealed the deal that enables them to add Bethesda to their ever-growing Xbox Game Studios portfolio and it’s the talk of the town. Naturally, TheXboxHub Official Podcast Episode 71 has something to offer regarding the deal, but there’s also a cavalcade of games to discuss as we share thoughts on DiRT 5, Kill It With Fire, Maquette, and many more. And that’s just a taste of what to expect from this latest episode, so please relax and enjoy our musings. Much like Microsoft, Gareth and James are welcoming a new addition in the form of Darren, with a little segment in place to get to know him a little better. Beyond that, the WandaVision TV series is a hot topic, alongside a scary drama known as The Terror and an anti-climatic Exploding Barbed Wire Deathmatch during AEW Revolution.  Following on from that, the trio have played a shed load of games in the past week and so they provide insight for each in turn. With a total of ten titles, both old and new, there’s surely going to be something for everyone; whether that involves annihilating spiders in Kill It With Fire, searching lovely environments for objects in Under Leaves, or understanding the puzzling world of Maquette. Expect the likes of Monster Truck Championship, DiRT 5, Eastshade, In Rays of the Light and other intriguing games to feature too. With time to spare, the team delve into the Bethesda deal and speculate what it means for Xbox Game Pass. Elsewhere, potentially dodgy dealings at EA involving FIFA Ultimate Team cards caught their eye. The unveiling of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge really brought about some nostalgic feelings, while news regarding We Were Here Forever extending the co-op series further and the release window for Rust just caps off a good week of announcements. Feel free to comment on anything discussed in TheXboxHub Official Podcast Episode 71 or ask any questions for us to answer in future episodes!
