How far can—and should—they go in editing future generations? In The Promise and Peril of CRISPR, editor Neal Baer brings together a timely collection of essays by influential bioethicists, philosophers, and geneticists to explore the moral, ethical, and policy challenges posed by CRISPR technology. We are at a technological and ethical crossroads in grappling with the impacts of genetic editing. Gene-editing technology holds the promise of curing more than 7,000 known genetic diseases. Yet with that promise comes the peril of using CRISPR to edit the human genome, which could not only lead to manipulating human evolution, but also to creating and releasing pathogens capable of wreaking havoc on human, animal, and plant life. In this episode, Ethan compares and contrasts the diagnostic imaging tools, CAC (coronary artery calcium score) and CTA (CT angiography), used to image plaque—including the latest in CTA software—and how these tools inform our understanding of ASCVD risk and guide clinical decision-making. Ethan discusses the types of plaque that cause events and the data that make a case for optimal medical therapy over stenting outside of particular cases. He explains why high blood pressure is problematic and walks through the data from clinical trials testing aggressive treatment. He talks about the best way to actually measure blood pressure, why we shouldn't simply accept that blood pressure rises with age, and how he uses different pharmaceutical agents to treat hypertension. Additionally, Ethan explains our current, but limited, understanding of the role of metabolic health in ASCVD. He discusses the impact of fat storage capacity and the location of fat storage and explains how and why there is still a residual risk, even in people who have seemingly normal lipids, don't smoke, and have normal blood pressure. Mikki and Ethan talk about how he became interested in studying time restricted eating (TRE) as a cardiologist. He talks about his introduction to low carbohydrate diets for type 2 diabetes (and his role as an advisor at Virta Health (https://www.virtahealth.com/) which changed his mind about the efficacy of low carbohydrate approaches for type 2 diabetes. Ethan describes his own n=1 experience of changing to a low carbohydrate diet and transitioning to TRE as a tool for weight loss, and how this spurred his interest in investigating the usefulness of TRE in a real world setting. They discuss what the trial was designed to show, what the (surprising) results were, and what oculd have accounted for them. They then go on to talk about future studies (the one that Dr Weiss discusses is now published, see below).Dr. Ethan Weiss is a cardiologist whose special interests include preventive cardiology, the genetics of coronary disease, risk assessment for heart conditions and heart disease in the young.In his research, Weiss uses genetic models to better understand the mechanisms of metabolic disorders linked to heart disease, such as obesity, fatty liver disease and diabetes. In this episode, we speak with Dr. Ethan Weiss. Dr. Weiss is a cardiologist at UCSF and recently made headlines for a large intermittent fasting study that he was involved in called the 'TREAT Study.' The study was unique in terms of the number of participants, duration, and number of biomarkers examined in a TRF (time-restricted feeding) vs. non-TRF study. Dr. Weiss' hypothesis was that the TRF group would see better results than the non-TRF group over the 12-week study. He talks about how he believed this due to his background in using TRF for himself to lose weight and when the results came out that TRF was NOT superior in the TREAT study, he was surprised. In fact, the study suggested there may have been some negatives with the TRF group that has made Dr. Weiss re-think his position with regard to TRF. We talk about the results of the study, the limitations, and his interpretation of the data. We also discuss how the media has taken some of the results completely out of context. In this episode of CircSci, we look at intermittent fasting and keto diets and whether they make sense for circus athletes with Dr. Ethan Weiss. Dr. Weiss is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, and a Principle Investigator in the Cardiovascular Research Institute (CVRI). He received his M.D. from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he also completed his internship and residency. He completed his cardiology training at UCSF. Dr. Weiss' clinical interests include prevention, lipids, thrombosis and the emerging intersection of endocrinology and cardiology with a specific focus on pre-diabetes and Type 2 diabetes as risk factors for coronary disease. His research is focused on the mechanisms of obesity, fatty liver disease, and diabetes. He has an active program in clinical nutrition exploring time-restricted eating. He has served as Principle Investigator on grants funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK). His laboratory previously focused on novel regulators of thrombosis and hemostasis. He serves on multiple scientific advisory boards and is a co-founder of Keyto Inc., a San Francisco-based company aiming to enable the use of a heart healthy ketogenic diet to treat metabolic diseases.
