Send us a textEvery country has its fair share of corporate failures. Afterwards, It is easy to point towards governance. Reflection and learning are essential. In this podcast, you hear from someone who has a critical governance role In Germany. You gain insights into the issues discussed and the perspectives of someone who hears daily from all players in the market - regulators, state officials, top managers, board members, the media and the general public. Dr Sabine Dembkowski, Founder and Managing Partner of Better Boards, discusses current trends in German Corporate Governance with Dr. Cordula Heldt, Head of Corporate Governance and Company Law at the German Share Institute (Deutsches Aktieninstitut).  She is also Head of the Secretariat to the Commission on the German Corporate Governance Code (Regierungskommission Deutscher Corporate Governance Kodex).  “Every declaration that you have to do is actually about nudging boards to do the work”Cordula opens with Germany's recent significant corporate failures, notably the Wirecard scandal, which led to new regulations concerning corporate governance.  Following the Wirecard case, German lawmakers introduced stricter requirements for risk management, internal control systems, and auditor regulations.  “Every declaration that you have to do is actually about nudging boards to do the work”However, despite the complaints about the administrative burden, Cordula believes the value of these declarations lies in their ability to nudge boards into taking their responsibilities seriously.  By requiring formal declarations, boards are compelled to examine their risk management and internal control systems closely – and this scrutiny is not only limited to financial reporting but extends to the entire governance framework.  The intent is to ensure that supervisory board members ask the right questions and engage more deeply with these systems.  “As a board chair, you're looking for people that you can propose to the board and the general meeting that can fill the whole seat”One effective approach some companies adopt, which Cordula notes, is reporting on the different levels of expertise within the board.  This means acknowledging that not every board member starts with the same level of knowledge, especially in specialised areas.  She believes this trend toward acknowledging and communicating different expertise levels supports more effective board development and governance.“Of course, they think it's burdensome, but everybody knows the alternative is regulation” Cordula advises bringing directors and policymakers closer together to create better boards.  She also understands that while directors generally support the code, they often find it burdensome, although they recognise that the more stringent regulation alternative could be worse.  She explains that one approach that has been effective (at least in Germany) is the practice of direct engagement, as Clara Christina Streit, the new chair of the German Code Commission, has implemented.  She started her tenure with a "listening tour." The three top takeaways from our conversation for effective boards are:1.      Familiarise yourself with the ongoing governance debates, focusing on principle-based and effective governance.  This will help you better navigate and meet reporting expectations.2.     Be aware of the potential expectation gaps in corporate reporting.  Understanding these gaps can help you align reporting practices with expectations of stakeholders and regulators.3.     Consider the board a cohesive team that must work together to ask the right questions and prevent governance failures.

Ours to Protect is a unique and exciting audio project – a collaboration of local and regional broadcasters from across the country who have come together to tackle climate change, champion climate action, and inform and educate audiences all over Ireland about how they can make a difference. Today on ‘Ours To Protect' John Morley talks to Dr Therese Conway, Assistant Professor and Director of the MA Planning and Development in the University of Galway about the importance of planning and its role in tackling climate change.   Did you know… Planning on both local and national levels will be vital if Ireland is to meet its ambitious climate targets? Proactive steps like investing in renewable energy and improving infrastructure resilience are cheaper than reacting to disasters caused by extreme weather events? A 2021 study by the World Bank found that adaptation costs could reach $300 billion annually by 2030 without proper planning? Why are planners so important in tackling climate change? Planners guide how our cities, towns and landscapes develop, They create plans and policies that influence building projects infrastructure investment and land use. Planners can help communities adapt to changing conditions by identifying vulnerable areas, implementing flood defences, and promoting natural infrastructure solutions like wetlands and forests. Climate change is a complex challenge with long-term impacts. Planners are trained to consider the future consequences of today's decisions, and this promotes long-term thinking on climate change. What can I do to help support planners who are tackling climate change? Staying educated and in the loop on climate issues in your local community. Familiarise yourself with your local authorities climate action plan. Galway City Council's can be found on their website. Climate change poses an existential risk to child health and is exacerbating health inequalities. But, paediatricians can play an important role in sharing information and advocating for action. Dr Helen Stewart and Dr Alex Lemaigre introduce the College's new toolkit for paediatricians. Our first tool helps you understand how climate change impacts on children and young people's health and exacerbates health inequalities. And our second equips you to influence climate change policy locally, regionally and nationally. Alex and Helen talk about why paediatricians have a role in addressing health inequalities impacted by climate change. And they provide advice on how to start conversations with key decision makers to address this.  "With climate change affecting food production globally plus the energy crisis and everything else, those households who have more limited income are going to really struggle to maintain the same level of food quality and/or quantity. And that brings all of its own health problems – be that malnutrition, obesity... Familiarise yourself with things locally - you know, if there are food banks or third sector kind of organisations that might be able to help support a household with getting food on the table." - Dr Alex Lemaigre In this episode, Alex and Helen refer to a condition called eco-anxiety. 7 Tips for Successful Presentations

Talk

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 7, 2023 7:24

The ability to communicate your ideas clearly and compellingly is an invaluable skill. Whether you're presenting in a boardroom, lecturing in a classroom, speaking to a large audience, or even preparing course content, your message's impact relies on your presentation skills. To help you convey your ideas like a seasoned professional, we've covered seven essential presentation tips in this podcast that will improve your chances of making a lasting impression on your audience. 1. Know Your Audience The foundation of any successful presentation is a deep understanding of your audience. Start by creating customer personas or profiling your students to grasp their interests, expectations, and knowledge levels. Tailor your message accordingly to ensure it resonates with your audience. If you're unsure about your audience, consider conducting surveys or feedback sessions to gather insights and address their needs effectively. 2. Structure Is Key Effective presentations follow a clear and concise structure. Begin with a compelling hook, such as a startling question or a fascinating fact, to engage your audience from the start. Organise the body of your presentation into three main points or sections, as people tend to remember information presented in sets of three. Conclude by summarising your key points and offering a compelling call to action or a memorable final thought. 3. Utilise Visual Aids Wisely Visual aids, such as slides, charts, infographics, and images, can enhance your presentation's impact. However, use them judiciously and ensure they are simple, relevant, and free of clutter. Visual aids should complement your message, not overshadow it. Consider tools like Canva or PowerPoint for interactive elements but don't let them dominate your presentation. Engage your audience by incorporating drawings or interactive elements that connect with your message. 4. Make Eye Contact Establishing eye contact with your audience is crucial for building credibility and connection. It allows you to gauge your audience's understanding and adjust your delivery based on their reactions. Encourage engagement through questions and interactive sessions, which not only keep your audience involved but also provide valuable insights for improving your presentation. 5. Rehearse Thoroughly Practice makes perfect. Familiarise yourself with your material, test your technology, and present with confidence. Practice your presentation aloud, paying particular attention to any challenging sections. If possible, rehearse in front of a trusted colleague or a small audience to gather feedback. Familiarity and practice breed confidence and improve your overall performance. 6. Manage Nerves Effectively It's natural to feel nervous before a presentation. Instead of letting anxiety overwhelm you, channel that energy into enthusiasm. Listen to motivating music, practice deep breathing, or engage in calming activities to ease your nerves. Remember, the focus should be on your message and how it benefits your audience, not on your own anxiety. 7. Handle Questions with Confidence A successful presentation often leads to questions. Be prepared for them by anticipating potential questions and having confident responses ready. Listen attentively, and if you don't know the answer, commit to following up with a concise and compelling response. Guide your audience towards further resources or information as needed. Conclusion In conclusion, mastering the art of effective presentation is an essential skill that can open doors to countless opportunities. By knowing your audience, structuring your content, using visual aids effectively, making eye contact, rehearsing thoroughly, managing nervousness, and handling questions confidently, you can elevate your presentation game and leave a lasting impact on your audience. Remember that presentation skills are continuously evolving, and seeking feedback after each presentation is key to improvement. Whether you're speaking to a large audience or connecting with a small group, each presentation is a valuable chance to refine your skills and make a meaningful impact on your audience. Highlights [00:00:34] Introduction to the seven tips for presenting ideas effectively. [00:00:47] Tip 1: Know your audience, including understanding their interests, expectations, and knowledge level. [00:01:08] Tip 2: Emphasise the importance of structuring your presentation with a hook, three main points, and a compelling conclusion. [00:02:43] Tip 3: Use visual aids such as slides, charts, and photos to illustrate key points effectively. Ep 23: Kayleigh's Love StoryKayleigh Haywood began speaking to Luke Harlow, a man she had never met, on 31 October 2015.Over the course of two weeks they exchanged 2643 messages. Harlow told the 15-year-old all the things many teenage girls want to hear. He told her she was beautiful, how much he cared for her and that she was special.Harlow was grooming Kayleigh, along with two other young girls he had also been speaking to. It was Kayleigh that finally agreed to his request to spend the night with him on Friday 13 November 2015.The following day she was introduced to Harlow's neighbour, Stephen Beadman. In the early hours of Sunday 15 November, having been held against her will by the pair, Kayleigh was raped and murdered by Beadman.Beadman was sentenced in July 2016 to a minimum of 35 years in prison for Kayleigh's murder.Harlow was given 12 years for grooming and false imprisonment.Kayleigh's legacy and the impact of the film  It was important to Kayleigh's family that her memory lives on and the brutal murder of the 15-year-old never happens again. Her story is a warning to other children of the dangers of speaking to strangers online and how quick online grooming can happen. The film has proven to be Leicestershire Police's most successful ever campaign. It has been seen by thousands of children in schools across the country and millions of people worldwide online. It was has won multiple awards and most importantly has encouraged many children to come forward and speak up about abuse and unwanted online communication.Kayleigh's legacy ensures the safeguarding of children from all forms of exploitation remains in the public domain. What can I do? Children and young people need to understand the importance of staying safe online.Make online safety an ongoing conversation. Talk regularly to them about how they use technology and find out what they enjoy doing online. If you are not sure where to begin, have a look for conversation starters. There are also tools available to help manage devices used by children, such as parental controls which can help protect a child from seeing inappropriate content online.Take a look at the Parents' Guide to Technology for further information. There are also signs that may indicate a child is being groomed. Familiarise yourself with them so you can act quickly if you suspect a child is in danger.

Sophia Elliott is the founder and podcast host of Our Gifted Kids. She has had a career full of turns and new learnings but found her passion and calling advocation for gifted children and their education. She is a supporter and curator of information for parents of gifted children. She is the mother of three gifted kids and shares her journey and lets other parents of gifted children know that they are not alone. Her podcast and community is just getting started! TAKEAWAYS FROM THIS EPISODE:There is a need for gifted information and podcastsIt’s hard to find all the people connected working in the field of giftedness such as teachers, parents, experts, academics, psychologistsParenting gifted children is not as easy as the term makes it seem. It’s actually quite challenging.Your child is usually all you know so it is sometimes hard to recognise giftednessMost parents of gifted children have to advocate and fight for their children to get the educational environment they needThe higher op on the gifted scale the more specialised education is required because of the asynchronicityGifted people can be amazingly flexible generalists which we don’t seem to value as much as specialistsWe want to teach our gifted kids to know themselves but how can we do that if we don’t know ourselves? We need to give children the vocabulary. They already know that they are different. They need to know why and how and therefore, need the vocabularyWe need to have a conversation of what it means for kids & adults to be gifted because the experience of the world is differentGifted kids are not “easier” or lucky and will not “breeze” through schoolKnowing your giftedness will change the way you see yourself and your experience of the world. It will make sense for the better.Gifted children and adults need to learn how to fail at things! If you don’t want to fail as adults it makes it harder to take risksYou as a parent of a gifted kid has the permission to be THAT parent to have the conversation with schools about your kids need. You have permission to stand up for your child and advocate for it.It’s not a reward! It is a gifted child’s right to learn at a pace and stage that they need to learn at!Ask the schools if they have gifted students and what they do for them to learn more about the school’s understanding of gifted educationAs a parent you need to be brave and not be afraid to ask the questions and keep looking until you find the right support and school. But it is hardSometimes school miss use the term gifted as high achievers. This is not the same.Kids are a gift but not all kids are gifted! Familiarise yourself with the education system for teachers. In Australia only the Master’s program for teachers covers the topic of gifted education. Teachers do not learn about giftedness in undergrad. The taboo is so strong and it is NOT ok! This sends the wrong message to the gifted kids telling them THEY are not ok!MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE:Our Gifted Kids website | facebook & facebook groupListen to the Podcast Paula Prober Your Rainforest MindJennifer Harvey Sallin InterGifted

Not to rehash podcasts 32 episodes in but in this episode I discuss the ATO benchmarks. While these have not been met with the warmest regards, it is about finding how to put them to work for you. The benchmarking process is a staple of the Wise Accounting service, and you can utilise them in the same way we do. We employ them for 3 reasons: To determine if a business is operating outside of the industry benchmarks and if they are an audit risk. To track how a taxpayer is performing in relation to their industry peers. Test assumptions on new business ventures and forecasted results to see if they pass the "sense test" and are in line with these known percentages. The benchmarks can provide you an insight in to your business that you may not be able to get otherwise. Competitors are not going to share this information with you, and this is the next best thing. The benchmarking data will provide you a handful of key performance indicators to evaluate the performance of your business at any time. Familiarise yourself with these ATO benchmarks and evaluate your business against industry peers: https://www.ato.gov.au/business/small-business-benchmarks/

The Craft of Comedy conference, held in Llandudno, North Wales on 22 February 2014, was aimed at people looking to get into the comedy business. In this master class from the conference, John Finnemore, creator and writer of John Finnemore’s Souvenir Programme and Cabin Pressure talks to BBC Radio Comedy producer Colin Anderson about radio sketch writing. He talks about how he made it as a sketch writer and gives his advice to fledgling comedy writers. Having done his fair share of low-profile comedy gigs, John recommends that stand up comedy is a good training ground. Whether at a students’ union or a room above a local pub, this is your chance to find out what works and whether your sketches will stand up or fall flat in front of an audience. As John puts it, you need to perform your sketches live “to find out where the laughs are.” Sketch writing is easier to get into than trying to pitch a whole sitcom series to a radio show. A sketch may only be a couple of minutes, but once it’s been accepted, you can quickly build your relationship with that broadcaster. With the growth of open door radio shows such as The Show What You Wrote and Newsjack, it’s easier than ever for budding sketch writers to approach programme-makers and see results. John describes how best to pitch to these shows, which both accept submissions from completely new writers. John advises writers to keep their sketches short. Familiarise yourself with the style and cast of a show, avoid racist, sexist or violent content and remember to always include a punchline. The more you can become known as a promising writer the more useful feedback you will get from programme makers to help improve your work. John also encourages sketch writers to keep notebooks with them at all times and to never throw an idea away – you can always improve upon it later. Find out what writing routine works best for you, whether that means writing at 6am or 8pm. He also says that although comedy sketch show producers do get sent a lot of submissions, very few of them are usable, so good writers will stand out straight away - “the competition isn’t as daunting as you might think.” John Finnemore is a comedy writer for BBC Radio 4 Extra’s airline-themed sitcom Cabin Pressure, as well as the Radio Academy award winning sketch show John Finnemore’s Souvenir Programme. He has also written for That Mitchell & Webb Look, Dead Ringers and The Now Show. Colin Anderson graduated from the BBC’s programme-making trainee scheme to become a producer for BBC Comedy. He has produced sketch shows for various BBC Radio stations, as well as the comedy series Josie Long: All of The Planet‘s Wonders and The Maltby Collection. He has won Radio Academy Awards for The Now Show and Mark Thomas: My Life In Serious Organised Crime.

As the founding member of Infusion, Jamie Stevens has quite the pedigree. In the early to late 2000's he traveled with the band all around the globe playing the world’s most prestigious clubs and festivals (and we are talking Glastonbury, Coachella and Roskilde among many others) which has given him the opportunity to hone his live performance skills and learn the intricate art of dancefloor mechanics - traits which he meticulously apply to his DJ sets which can range from driving peak time tek to stoned-out warm up slots (check his recent warm up set for Danny Howells in Melbourne). On the production tip Jamie has really propelled himself forward with a characteristic cinematic, percussive and bass-heavy sound that has seen his tracks find a home on labels like Bedrock, Dieb Audio, Chameleon and microCastle (if you’ve not heard Jamie’s recent microCastle track ‘The Wonder of You’ yet, do yourself a favour and listen to it now. Just don’t blame us when you melt away after hearing it). His instantly recognizable remixes created for the likes of Hernan Cattaneo, Booka Shade, D.Ramirez, Cid Inc and Antix amongst a host of others have been no stranger to praise and support from the biggest names in the industry: Sasha, Laurent Garnier, D-Nox, Adam Beyer, Danny Howells and Secret Cinema. We can’t be more excited to have Jamie on board for a Balance Selections podcast and man, did he deliver. One look at the tracklisting below will tell you that he has bought himself the biggest musical spade he could find for some proper crate digging. As Jamie puts it: “I just chose tracks that told a story all together rather than just new tunes or one particular feel: electronica, 50s computer music, berlin techno, Krautrock, progginess... Haha!” That might sound like hyperbole but he is spot on with that description as there is no specific sound happening here (that said, there is an underlying theme connecting all of the tracks). Rather, what you will find here is a collection of interesting tracks that is far more than the sum of its parts - and isn't that the hallmark of all great mixes? Enough already. Familiarise yourself with Jamie though the Q+A below, then switch of the lights, power down your phone, put on the headphones and press play. As the famous line by British actor Geoffrey Sumner goes: "This is a journey into sound!" Tracklisting and interview here: www.balancemusic.com.au/news/balance-selection-004-jamie-stevens/
