John Acquaviva... Where to begin?! John is such an amazing person, down to earth, hard-working and great to be around. I’ve known John for quite a few years now and each year I interview him and always learn something new!     If you haven’t heard directly of John Acquaviva’s works, the chances are - whatever your involvement with electronic music is - that you will be aware of his work and influence within the electronic music community. The Italian-Canadian artist is also known for his involvement with techno titan Richie Hawtin and the forming of the highly influential labels Plus 8 Recordings and Definitive records and his fruitful involvement with Final Scratch and especially Beatport, being a vital founder of both companies.   He is a pioneer of electronic music’s technological evolution and helped sculpt the genre’s game-changing transition from analog to digital and from vinyl to turntables and laptops. In sharing this vision with Richie Hawtin, they spearheaded a project that would act as the iTunes of dance, which paved the path for a new and zestful era.   I had so much fun recording this episode with John! He had so many great stories to tell as we spoke about his journey right from the beginning up until now… I absolutely love this episode and I’m sure you will too!

Time sure does fly when you’re having fun, and so it is that we’ve already raced up to podcast number 200. We’ve managed to call upon a suitably large name for the honour; someone who has very much shaped the techno scene over the course of the last 20 years and continues to excite people every time he plays. That man is Surgeon. As a performer, Birmingham’s Anthony Childs was one of the first men to embrace and exploit the possibilities of Ableton Live and Final Scratch. His mastery of that technology made his sets even more improvised and innovative, and over the years he has never compromised his vision. He plays with a sense of devastation and destruction that explores the very outer edges of what is possible, while always keeping the dance floor absolutely locked in. It’s been the same since he founded his hometown’s first techno club, House of God, at the start of the 90s. As a producer—whether solo or in celebrated collaborations with Regis as British Murder Boys or Ben Sims as Frequency 7—he seems to be getting better with age. Right from his first EP on Karl O’Connor’s Downwards in 1994, surgeon has had a hard hitting, linear style that remains to this day. Recent years saw him return to a primitive rave style and incorporate the gritty industrial influences of his youth. But in 2018 he evolved again and served up what many consider to be his best album in years. Luminosity Device features a more rhythmic, playful sense of drum programming next to his meticulously crafted synths and enthralling sense of urgency and future paranoia. The nuance in his tracks is now as intriguing as the visceral power of the kicks, and it all adds up to an album that works as well on headphones, at home, as it does on the dance floor. It’s proper techno by a proper techno head. And so is the mix he has put together for us. Over 1 hour 45 minutes, the man calls upon plenty of pivotal names from Juan Atkins and Oscar Mulero to Donato Dozzy and James Ruskin. There are plenty of twists and turns along the way, so that zoned out passages of dubbed out drums are followed by intergalactic space battles and moments of synth laden intensity. It’s a testament to Surgeon’s skills that he can take you to such far ranging corners of the techno world without ever getting lost.

Richie Hawtin always pushes the envelope: he started Plus 8 Records with John Acquaviva, formed the M-nus empire and developed Final Scratch. His works as F.U.S.E., the delicious desolation of Plastikman and his groundbreaking works with the Concept series and Decks, EFX & 909 are all firmly planted in techno's history. A fierce advocate of technology, he's continued to operate at the limits, whether via his CONTAKT events or his Ibiza night ENTER. Here, Hawtin reflects on his multifaceted career.

What we gonna do right here for Episode 113 is go back. WAY BACK. Back in to time... Ten years ago. Sounds like a long time, doesn't it? Well, David and Trip take a look back and see how much different everything was: 2007 marked the beginning of the mobile revolution. Apple announced the iPhone, and since then, mobile technology has drastically changed the definition of a phone. As DJs, there's so many apps and ways for our devices to help us DJ, now...all thanks to the advancement of smartphone technology. DJ Mag's Top 100 is saturated in trance and rife with voting controversy.  Beatport's Top 9 selling tracks in 2007 indicates the dominance of electro-house in the years before dubstep domination. Daft Punk releases Alive in 2007 (which went on to win a Grammy in 2009). Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five were inducted to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Pioneer launched the DJM-700 and the CDJ-400, Technics put out a super-limited run of 1000 SL-1200MK6, Vestax released the first serious DJ controller (VCI-100), and among several other hardware releases from Behringer, Xone, Korg, and others, the Innofader drops on to the market. Traktor Scratch comes in to being after splitting off from Final Scratch. Beyonce topped the charts in 2007, but the much of the top 20 was saturated by the likes of Akon, Timbaland, Fergie, while Rhianna and others were solidifying their superstar status, as well.

Canada’s John Acquaviva is one of those behind-the-scene players whose influence spread far and wide. He is a businessman, artist and punter in equal spades, and have dedicated 4 decades to the global dance music industry. As a co-founder of Beatport and Final Scratch, he has helped sculpt the dance music transition from analogue to digital, and from vinyl to CDJs and laptops. (’I think of it as a horse and buggy age in that once you have a car, which in DJ life was both Final Scratch technology and Pioneer perfecting CDs, it’s hard to go back.) A chance meeting in 1989 with fellow Canuck Richie Hawtin, lead to the creation of one of the most pivotal techno imprints, Plus 8 Records (which released music form artist like Cybersonik, Speedy J, Kenny Larkin and Plastikman). They followed that up in 1993 with the more house and tech-flavoured Definitive Records, which, almost 25 years later is still relevant as ever. Today, Acquaviva calls himself a vinyl collector, insatiable entrepreneur, executive film producer and label owner. Yet above all, John Acquaviva is the quintessential performer at heart. His DJ career has surged forward with sets at BPM Festival, Space Ibiza, Output in Brooklyn, Bellevue in Zurich and Crobar in Buenos Aires to name a few. With tracks from Henrik Schwarz, Matthias Tanzmann, Artslaves and more, this is a deep and body-moving tech workout with one the scene’s most reliable and longest-serving pioneers. Christian Fischer live from Florence! Leipzig original Christian Fischer, DJ and producer for over ten years by now, is renowned for his hybrid and flexible, heavy-hitting yet fragile techno style that oscillates between anthemic house and seminal electro while also embracing the most frantic frequencies. His breathtaking flexibility and scope is down to Christian’s residencies where Fischer honed his skills, amongst them at Leipzig city’s famed Distillery club. Running the successful imprint Definition Records, which has become an integral part of the international techno scene over the years while growing into a varied outlet that has helped to shape the movement, Christian is not one to shy away from stylistic advancement and technical innovation. Being one of the first who embraced new DJing technologies such as Final Scratch, Christian’s melody-driven, uplifting and progressive sets are legendary. Fischer, who jump-started his career on the befriended Statik Entertainment label and has since released celebrated EP on imprints as varied as Craft Music, Patterns, Abyss and Whirlpool Sex, teamed up with colleague DJ Murphy, the sensational turntable talent Fischer unearthed on one of his countless Brazil tours and signed for his label straight away, to produce and play under the moniker Deckmonsters. With their crazy turntable tricks, they are breaking every preconception what a DJ set could be like. They released their first longplayer in 2008, which is now followed by Christian Fischer’s solo debut album “Bryzant Games” out now on Bryzant. It’s time for some risky business: Let’s play Bryzant Games! In his typical easy-going and open-minded, limitless way, Definition Records label boss Christian Fischer strikes back by nonchalantly pulling out a brand new installment of his definition of Maximum Sound of his sleeves. Freely exploring the outer limits of the electronic music universe with his new long-player, it is up to you where you want to take it: to the floor or to extremes! You choose! Whether you prefer techno, electro or minimal, ranging from powerful floor tunage to melodic meltdowns, "Bryzant Games" has it all. Exploring the multi-colored hemispheres of electronic dance music, Christian, sounding stronger and more confident than ever, achieves the remarkable accomplishment of leaving behind stylistic conventions and pigeon-holing in favor of total musicality. Diving into a party cosmos of varicolored possibilities in a pleasantly unbiased fashion, gallant Fischer shows great musical maturity - his multifaceted output reflecting his broad spectrum. To top things off, the East German producer, label owner and DJ cooperated with artists as eclectic as German hiphop singer Sabrina Setlur and UK techno and breaks heroes Slam and Hybrid, the results of which sound amazing. Electroey vocal techno tracks a la "Bitch" compete with groovy electro house workouts that shine because of their excellent minimal sound esthetic, and reduced structures get loaded with funky samples - it’s down to Fischer’s great ability to fuse that everything melts into a smooth whole. Opening a scenic window to keypad landscapes of exuberant lushness, he is recreating the melodic undertone of Detroit by indulging in an abundance of strings and sparkly key chords as demonstrated in "Chiffre" and "Advanced Panorama", and celebrating the absolute rationality techno that sets the scene at the beginning of the album only to drift into vocal-driven, housey dimensions that revive disco in a mainstage fashion, the experienced resident DJ Fischer knows how to please any crowd: by surprising them with the expected, avoiding the all to obvious and sounding completely catchy, all at the same time. The concept of "Bryzant Games" is as simple as it is logical. The sixteen fresh, exciting tracks are split up into four thematic EPs in distinct sound colours aimed to appeal to its respective audience. Delivered in a Vinyl Box the flavours range from crazy club tunage and mind-blowing main stage burners to more eclectic electro sounds, "Bryzant Games" has something for everybody. It’s been a great year for Leipzig-born and bred Christian Fischer who has been at it constantly: His Clubtech Panorama mix compilation was only just going down to much critical acclaim when it was already outmatched by the release of the first ever Deckmonsters album. Produced in conjunction with Brazilian super star DJ Murphy who is the perfect counterpart, the two DJs toured the biggest European electronic music festivals in order to wow the puzzled audience with their turntable antics. It’s incredible that Fischer, at it in his purest essence, still found time in the studio to complete his most accomplished work to date. "Bryzant Games" is a fascinating dance epic that lets the pumping heart skip a beat or two. Game over.   Christian Fischer on Facebook

Lacerta is DJane from Bratislava, Slovakia. Her mom was a pianist so she was close to the music since childhood. Later Lacerta was playing the piano and guitar. Since that time she is active fan of electronic music. Attending music events for many years gave her suggestions of dreams, which she realized in 2004, when she reappeared behind the mixer in her club Empire. Trance music, which she still likes, was replaced by the rhythmical and uncompromising house (from progressive, tribal and tech-house). Later she returned to trance, but little harder tech-trance. Currently she still plays trance, but techno, tech-house and progressive trance too. She was always interested in world dance music and thanks to regular visiting of Ibiza she has good overview about music. Right there, in Ibiza, she draw inspiration and perceive actual world trends. During selecting the tracks she always concentrate on dominant rhythmics with strong bassline and melody. That's why her sets are always dynamic and full of positive energy. She uses Final Scratch with CD players so she keeps contact with tracks. LaCerta has resident night at her club Empire every month and she is planning to start with her own production soon. And finally, part 2 of the best of trance for the last decade (Nos 25 - 1). This list was really hard to come up with and honestly all the tracks on here are amazing. I'm sure there'll be much debate as to who should be #1, but hey this is my list! Well, this was one of the harder podcasts to put together. My original intent was to put the best (aka my favorite) progressive AND trance tracks of the last decade together on one big podcast. But that was just impossible; there are way too many good songs in both genres and since the goal was to do a countdown, they really wouldn't mix all that well without the set jumping all over the place. So, I've created 2 sets...best of progressive/house and the best of trance/progressive trance. It's broken down into 4 parts, and this is the first one: The Best of the Decade (2000-2009) in Trance, Part 1 (Numbers 50 thru 26). Like all good lists, it's in reverse order. So how did I decide the order? Using numbers of record sales or weeks #1 on the charts would've been way too easy and I'm sure someone has or will do that. No, I went in the order of "man I LOVE this song, but I LOVE this song way more." This pretty much helped eliminate almost all the songs that got way too overplayed in the last decade (most, not all) and lots of crap songs IMO. Like all lists, it's not perfect but it's my list. I hope you enjoy it and looking forward to any disagreements and songs you think I'm crazy for leaving out. The list for part 1 is below, enjoy! 50. Armin Van Buuren - Zocalo - Original Mix 49. Rank 1 - Awakening - Original Mix 48. 4 Strings - Take Me Away (Into The Night) - Original Vocal Mix 47. Bossanova - Stone Cold - Original Extended Mix 46. Way Out West - Killa - Orkidea Mix 42. The Thrillseekers - Synaesthesia - Ferry Corsten Remix 41. Max Graham ft. Jessica Riddle - Gone (RIP) 40. Cranberries - Shattered (Arctic Quest Remix) 39. Rod B. & Alvaro Garfunk bring you the Miami Underground MovementRichie Hawtin Biography   Artist, DJ, conceptualist and ambassador, more than anyone else in modern electronic music, Richie Hawtin has relentlessly proved himself to be a true innovator. The one-man mogul behind acclaimed Techno imprints Plus 8 & Minus sends signals out all over the world from his HQ in an old fire station in Windsor, Ontario – just across the border from Detroit Techno City. The signals are constantly evolving, his Plastikman persona gave Techno a unique face with a series of four ruthlessly minimal albums of skeletal beauty, while breathtaking festival live sets at Glastonbury and Tribal Gathering helped invent stadium Techno. His “Decks, EFX & 909” album released on novamute in 1999 expanded the concept of a DJ mix album beyond the imagination of most DJs. As a pioneering DJ and party promoter he was banned from entering America for 18 months. Yet this jet-setting international futurist is as at home exhibiting alongside acclaimed modern sculptor Anish Kapoor as he is headlining a bush rave with Josh Wink somewhere in Western Australia.  More of a decade into his career, it’s no surprise that the every-youthful Hawtin is up to something new. This time, he’s reconstructing the DJ mix album even further with “DE9: Closer To The Edit”, the groundbreaking new album set for release on the novamute label in September 2001.  His first mix album, for the Mixmag Live series, saw him use extra effects and drum machines as long ago as 1993, “Decks, EFX & 909” cut laser-style between tracks and now, “DE9: Closer To The Edit”, sees Hawtin use his sampler to tear the skin and the flesh from the tracks until there’s just a skeleton left, which he reassembles into a kind of Frankenstein’s robot. The result is a mix album like you’ve never heard before. Hawtin describes this unique process “I recorded, sampled, cut and spliced over 100 tracks down into their most basic components. I ended up with over 300 loops, ranging in different lengths. I started to recreate and reinterpret each track and then put the pieces back together, as if an audio jigsaw puzzle – using effects and edits as the glue between each piece”.  A classic like Carl Craig’s ‘4 My Peepz’ (under his Paperclip People guise) breathes in and out in less than a minute, like a lonely spirit lost on the hard drive.  “I don’t like mix CDs, everyone’s being lazy, so I gotta do something different,” says Hawtin. “Some people think it’s about me using some extra equipment – a drum machine and some effects - but it’s a whole philosophy really. ‘Let’s take it to the extreme, to somewhere that’s it never been before’ “  Hawtin believes the whole DJ thing is stuck in a groove. So beyond “DE9…” he is championing a new DJ system developed in Holland called Final Scratch, with Plus 8 partner John Acquaviva. Dance and Electronic music is the most technology-based genre of all, but to Hawtin’s frustration it’s still rooted in a music delivery system developed in the 19th Century: the gramophone record. Even though more and more DJs play tracks burnt onto CD, vinyl still rules because it’s easier and instinctive to control. Final Scratch links up to the normal two-turntables-and-mixer set up, but lets you play tracks stored on a laptop using a special piece of vinyl as a ‘mouse’, or controller. You can access literally thousands of tracks, and scratch, cut, slow and mix them just like normal records using this special piece of vinyl. It’s nothing short of revolutionary. As Hawtin enthuses: “It feels and acts like a regular record.” He’s already using Final Scratch to play unreleased tracks by Josh Wink and Speedy J, and special re-edits of some of Hawtin’s classics and personal faves.   Born in Banbury, Oxfordshire, England, on June 4th 1970 Hawtin emigrated with his family when he was nine to Windsor, Ontario, where his dad Mick still works as a robot technician in the General Motors car factory (his mother, Brenda, is in real estate). Richie cheekily borrowed his dad’s persona for his house alias Robotman. His brother Matthew, who shares the Windsor fire station studio complex with Richie, is a visual artist. By 15 Richie was creeping out of the house to cross the border and go clubbing in Detroit. By 17 he was DJing at The Shelter, a dark basement club where he mixed House and Techno with Industrial music by Nitzer Ebb and Front 242. He had his own show on Detroit’s 96.3FM – inspired by a late ‘80s Detroit radio DJ called The Wizard, now better known as Jeff Mills.  As a teenager Hawtin, already into Breakdancing and Electro, was stirred by the radically beautiful machine music being fashioned by Detroit Techno pioneers like Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson. In 1989 he set up Plus 8 Records with John Acquaviva to release their own tracks and push new artists. They started running parties in Detroit. But far from welcoming them, the tight-knit Detroit Techno scene initially turned a cold shoulder on the two renegade Canadians.  “It pissed a lot of people off because there wasn’t anyone else in the city doing it – it took someone from the outside to come in and say, ‘Look, wake up,’” Richie recalls. “These guys [May, Atkins and Saunderson] have left. They’re doing their thing overseas.”  Plus 8 began to gather momentum with a richly varied catalogue of hard-nosed, cutting edge Techno from artists like Speedy J, Dan Bell and Kenny Larkin. Along with the resurgence of Detroit’s confrontational Underground Resistance, this marked the second wave of Detroit Techno. “We all put the focus back on Detroit for a while, we didn’t want to make traditional Techno, we were inspired by traditional Techno. Derick, Kevin and Juan had sent these waves all over the world and we were the first to feel the rebounds of their ripples”.   By 1993 Richie Hawtin’s Detroit parties had become legendary intense affairs as freaky dancing clubbers lost themselves in strange, dark warehouses transformed into disorientating warrens by walls of black plastic sheeting. Inspired by this, Hawtin elected to take Techno one stage further and develop his virtual Plastikman alter ego: a red and black gremlin that is tattooed on his forearm. He didn’t want a collection of tracks; he wanted to make an album that swallowed up the concentrated energy of those parties and spit it back out as something new. An album, “Sheet One” was recorded in a rollercoaster 48 hour studio session and released on novamute in early ‘93 and was soon followed by the brilliant ‘Spastik’, a single recorded three weeks later after a long night dancing to Derrick May.  Hawtin was already shifting identities like a spy changing roles: his 1992 album “Dimension Intrusion”, under his Fuse alias, had played a key part in the Warp label’s groundbreaking “Artificial Intelligence” armchair-Techno series, but he wanted to reach further. He remembered the strange shapes that his friends threw at those warehouse parties, the different creatures they almost became. “Like plasticine,” he says. “That was the whole idea of Plastikman, it was all very viscous and pliable and moveable.” Plastikman wasn’t just a clever alter ego – it was a role for you to try on too. The sound was rubbery and sparse; its moments of melodic steel arriving unnervingly. The first album, “Sheet One”, played up Hawtin’s reputation for LSD and was promoted with a free sheet of fake acid tabs. Hawtin developed a Plastikman live show that still tours the world. Huge audiences at Glastonbury and Tribal Gathering twitched to its twittering insect rhythms, lost in a soundtrack far freakier than anything else those events had to offer. In 1994 the second album on novamute, “Musik”, let a little human warmth seep onto the clattering Plastikman rhythms, but despite its closing robot lullaby ‘Lasttrak’, it was, if anything, even more discomfortingJust as the little Plastikman gremlin was becoming an international phenomenon, American immigration officials banned Hawtin from entering America for working illegally. He was barred from entering the States for 18 months. It was a devastating experience.  “My girlfriend lived there and most of my experiences were in Detroit, my friends were there and all of my musical inspiration was there – and suddenly it was like, ‘See that building over there? You can see your inspiration, but you can’t go there.’” Now, typically, he believes the ban had its benefits. It was at this point the Chemicals Brothers and Underworld began to break out of the dance world and into a wider Rock arena. Hawtin now wonders whether he might have gone further down the stadium Techno route. Instead, grounded in Windsor, he went back to the studio to reinvent. “When that happened it was the worst day of my life,” he says now, “and it was one of the best things too.”  The next Plastikman project, ‘Klinik’, wouldn’t come together. “I had tried to follow those records up but there were feelings of pressure at that point,” he says now. Stuck in the studio, depressed, Hawtin set himself a new challenge and gave it a deadline. He pressurised himself back into action, releasing a series of ‘Concept’ EPs based on the months of the year. Each release would feature two tracks recorded in one month only using a set template of sounds. They would be released and then forgotten. The discipline of producing 24 tracks in 12 months rewired the creative circuits. “It progressed me to a different audience, it progressed me with effects which came into my sets and it progressed me into more of this spatial environment I was trying to get to,” says Hawtin.  It was the starting point for his last Plastikman album “Consumed”, which replaced the angry black and red gremlin with dark, abstract sleeve art and the tense rhythms with swathes of bass and melody. Released on novamute in 1998, it was acclaimed in countries like France – where conceptual artists are traditionally celebrated. “Consumed” elevated Hawtin to a new status, he was now not just an international Techno star, but a contemporary artist. Asked to contribute to a French Millennium Exhibition celebrating different ideas of beauty, Hawtin created a musical installation based around the clicks, hisses and pops of vinyl – a beautiful sound, he argued, to his generation. The exhibition also featured the work of world famous sculptor, Anish Kapoor, who Hawtin had long been a fan. In fact “Consumed”’s unique textureshad been inspired by Kapoor’s beguiling, futuristic, curved shapes and the cover art echoed the sculptor’s famous obelisk. “I was walking around those sculptures and putting my head into some of them. They had like a sonic quality like chambers of nothingness – and that’s exactly what I was trying to hear. Suddenly I was able to walk around a physical version of what I wanted to do musically.” Hawtin was also moved by the mournful purple washes of the late Mark Rothko, which now hang in London’s Tate Modern. Rothko’s work, says Hawtin, “is very, very subtle, just washes of texture. It kind of gave me a visual perspective of what I was trying to get out of my head, sonically. On a flat surface.”  This is where Hawtin is at now. Constantly touring all over the world and keeping fans updated on his world wide DJ travels via his website diaries; taking his dad out to dinner with John Peel (a big deal for his Peel–fan father especially now his son is a huge favourite of the radio DJ); pushing himself to his creative boundaries and taking Techno with him. Not just to the middle of the dancefloor, but also above it.  “The good Techno musicians enjoy having a good time, but can see beyond it,” Hawtin notes. “It’s the closest to a contemporary art form.” With Jeff Mills providing an installation to the recent Sonar event in Barcelona, Germany’s Thomas Brinkmann moving from conceptual art into conceptual Techno, and increasing connections between the two worlds.  As Techno and art move closer together Hawtin sees it as a logical part of his constant reinvention. “It’s about setting a standard for yourself and progressing yourself. Showing people you can do something interesting that’s more than just dance music.”  CONTACT INFORMATION Label/Sales:  Rudy Delgado | rd@m-nus.com  tel. +49 30 405040 345 Press Contact: Meike Nolte | mn@m-nus.com tel. +49 30 405040 355 Tour/Booking: Katrin Schlotfeldt | katrin@clonk.com tel. +49 30 40056892 Special Thanks To Mrs Meike Nolte,Rudy Delgado & Richie Hawtin

Rod B. & Alvaro Garfunk bring you the Miami Underground MovementTROY PIERCE Biography  Growing up in the quiet farm town of Muncie, Indiana four hours drive from Chicago and Detroit, it was hard to ignore the rich sounds emanating from these House and Techno strongholds. Troy was among the first to pick up on DJs like Derrick Carter, Jeff Mills and Richie Hawtin and was always out and about at parties in Detroit, Ohio and across the Midwest. Strangely enough though, he never thought about picking up a pair of headphones himself, preferring to leave the DJ duties to his friends. This way he could fully immerse himself in the music, especially the experimental ambient tones of the after hour chill outs.   This all changed in 1994. He moved to New York to study photography and like every student worth their salt, blew the remainder of his cash on a pair of turntables. He’d been toying with the idea for a while and as luck would have it his flatmate was also the manager of Temple Records so there was an endless supply of quality tunes on hand from labels like Perlon to satisfy his growing vinyl addiction.   Troy eventually hooked up with Magda at the Detroit Music Festival in 2001, who in turn introduced him to Mark Houle six months later. An immediate chemistry developed between the three of them and although Magda was now in Berlin, Mark in Windsor and Troy in New York they started swapping music files over the net. By the time the Run Stop Restore project finally crystallised into their debut release in early 2003, Troy had already moved to Berlin. It was a big decision to leave but somehow New York no longer offered up-and-coming musicians the same freedom of expression it used to, while Germany and Berlin in particular was setting new standards in minimal electronic music production.   Since touching down in December 2002, he’s been letting his music do the talking. As a relative unknown, it’s never easy staking a claim in a new city, especially one with such a rich musical heritage but sure enough, through a string of successful gigs and a mixture of impressive releases on Minus (Run and Slacknoise), Underline (Louderbach) and Mo’s Ferry Productions, Troy has been attracting the right kind of attention and is now a regular performer on the European circuit.  2005 was the year when it all came good. The release of the Minimise to Maximise compilation and the accompanying tour left a lasting impression on clubbers at such centres of excellence as Robert Johnson in Offenbach and the Paradiso in Amsterdam but perhaps the real turning point came in August at pop.com. All those endless nights on the road and solitary days in the studio came together in one heart stopping set at the Watergate club. Taking the game to an expectant crowd including fellow producers and industry types, his uncompromising mix of minimal house and down beat, funked up techno announced, in no uncertain terms, that he was here for the long haul.As a DJ, attempts to categorise his style pose more questions than they answer. Minimalism in its purest form is a tag he more freely associates with labels like Consumed - ‘super sparse, difficult and totally out there’. Troy on the other hand, has developed a dance floor friendly hybrid sound that takes the best from the ‘little movements and micro trends’ that constantly spring up, helping electronic music to evolve. It retains the mechanical, futuristic sounds of techno but is slower and less abrasive allowing him to work between the lines, exploit the space between the beats and push out into the third dimension that epitomises the Minus sound.   Like his label mates, Troy is a strong advocate of cutting edge technology like Ableton Live, Final Scratch and sample tools like Cyloop. The ability to shift between these sound sources offers him unparalleled flexibility as a DJ but the benefits don’t just stop there. He recalls road testing a new track one night in Berlin, getting the thumbs up from the rest of crew but then receiving puzzled calls the next day because the track didn’t sound quite the same – he was of course looping in samples ‘on the fly’ and it was this spontaneous improvisation that really set the dancefloor alight. Needless to say these overdubs found their way into the final mix.  From a production point of view his tracks normally derive from experimenting with his Machine Drum or expanding outwards from the dark, atmospheric vocal elements that play a pivotal role in many of his productions. Inspiration often comes through choice regarding the effects he uses, rejecting standard, tried and tested settings in favour of unique percussive elements designed to challenge and intrigue. The result is a montage of scratchy subliminal textures and grinding beats. It’s edgy stuff driven by dark funky bass riffs that get right under the skin, the perfect tonic for any after hour as sleep deprivation starts playing tricks with the mind.  As it stands, 2006 promises to be an even busier year than 2005. Having provided the backbone of their releases so far, Troy will wrap up his work for UK label Underline with the eagerly anticipated Louderbach LP. Alongside this, his growing status as a remixer (check out his version of Ellen Allien’s Your Body is My Body) will see him reworking the likes of Lawrence and Donnacha Costello. There’s also another Run EP in the pipeline but maybe the most interesting development is the conception of a new label - Items and Things - together with Magda and Marc Houle which should take flight in the spring.   If that’s not enough, there’s a full-on, five week Minus tour of the US on the horizon. Richie, Magda, Marc and Troy will set off in May (complete with monster tour bus) for what can only be described as a next generation magical mystery tour during which they’ll take in 25 cities. They probably won’t be stopping in Muncie but it’s a sign of just how much his stock has risen over the past couple of years and confirmation that a solid work ethic, positive thinking and a total dedication to the cause always bears fruit in the end.  Special Thanks to Mr Meike Nolte,Rudy Delgado & Richie Hawtin http://www.myspace.com/168585319 http://www.m-nus.com/ http://www.plus8.com/ http://www.contakt-events.com/

Rod B. & Alvaro Garfunk bring you the Miami Underground MovementWith the release of her solo STOP EP on Minus, Magda can finally afford to take stock of a whirlwind few years that have seen the insatiable demand for her very special blend of house and techno carry her the length and breadth of the globe.  November 2005 and Magda’s set is reaching its climax at London’s Fabric. One moment she’s pounding the crowd with her very own 48 Hour Crack In Your Bass, the next the hairs on the back of 500 necks simultaneously stand to attention as the moody chords from Strafe’s all time classic Set It Off produce a collective gasp of appreciation from the dancefloor. She’s in the zone, unphased by the raucous response she’s generating. Virtually hidden by the racks of fx units and monitors surrounding her, she remains a picture of calmness, dictating the play with a cool hand.  It’s easy to see why she’s one of the most exciting prospects to breakthrough in recent years.    Magda makes things happen. Always has done, always will do.  Currently residing in Berlin, a relative stone’s throw from her home town of Zywiec in Poland considering the nomadic existence of her childhood, she seems to have finally found a city that mirrors her own attitude to life - no restrictions and certainly no compromise. It’s a philosophy that also flows through Magda’s music particularly during her after hour sets. The ability to guide her audience through the dark recesses of contemporary minimalism before delivering them back safely into the light means her name is never far from the lips of discerning clubbers and fellow DJs alike.  Her family left Zywiec for Texas in 1984 when she was nine before finally settling in Detroit in 1986. All this traveling around from one starkly contrasting environment to another, taught her to deal with new challenges and to adapt to new situations pretty quickly, lessons that have subsequently helped her deal with the often hectic life of a touring DJ. Always the outsider, the concept of ‘home’ was never as straightforward as it is for some. Sometimes though, home isn’t a physical location, it’s a state of mind and when she first turned up at a warehouse party a couple of blocks from where she’d grown up in the tough district of Hamtramck, she knew she’d found it. This initial foray into the Detroit underground culminated in the mind-blowing experience that was Spastik - Richie Hawtin’s first Plastikman PA. She was hooked.   Within a few months, armed with a cheap pair of belt drive turntables and an unquenchable thirst for vinyl, she’d moved from one side of the shop counter to the other at the influential Record Time store and had also persuaded the bar where she worked to put on a monthly techno night with Claude Young and Daniel Bell. Her enthusiasm was totally infectious and they soon asked her to warm up for them. In conversation it’s clear to see how much the lack of attitude and unconditional support from Bell in particular has shaped Magda’s own way of doing things.  Then, inspired by her mother’s ‘dark and surreal’ art she decided to study Graphic Design in New York state but soon realized music was the most natural medium for her self expression. Nevertheless, this abstract influence can still be found in her music production, juxtaposing as she does warm, thick swathes of sound with jagged little hi hat patterns, sometimes lazy, sometimes clinical but always purposeful and expressive.   On returning to Detroit she met Richie Hawtin at one of the legendary Hot Box parties where a mutual friend introduced her. It was the first of what turned out to be a couple of chaotic encounters that eventually led to the invitation of a gig at Hawtin’s 13 Below night. It was there she first met Marc Houle. Their off-beat humor quickly developed into an unshakeable friendship and Magda was soon lodging with Marc in Windsor where their musical symbiosis started laying the foundations for 2003’s Run Stop Restore project together with Troy Pierce.    By this time she’d already cut her teeth on the main stage, regularly performing at the System raves in Detroit and as part of the Women on Wax collective. Things don’t always go according to plan though, and by 1999 Magda was pretty much fed up with the ‘scene politics’ that seemed directly at odds with the feelings she’d first encountered. She took a step back, followed her heart and immersed herself in the minimal sounds scuttling out of Germany in particular (i.e Brinkmann, Perlon, Kompakt). The resulting bootleg CD mix - Fact and Friction - won her a new set of admirers and consolidated her growing relationship with Hawtin, opening for him at the millennium celebration EPOK and also forming part of an enviable line up at the Plus 8 ten year anniversary party From Our Minds To Yours. Since then she has become his sole choice as opening DJ, accompanying him on both European and Stateside tours.   The new millennium brought a host of new digital technology with it, most notably Final Scratch and when she wasn’t on the road she could be found wiling away the hours transferring Hawtin’s vast record collection into the digital domain. At the time there were only about ten DJs using Final Scratch and while others regarded it with suspicion, Magda was quick to see the potential, re-editing her favorite tracks to further enhance the distinctive flavor of her sets. She shies away slightly from the ubiquitous ‘minimal’ tag, citing Chicago Jack and Acid as equally significant ingredients in her sound but whichever way you look at it, she is part of a movement that is rapidly redefining electronic dance music as we know it. Turntables, laptops, samplers and efx units now clutter her DJ booth as the wall between traditional DJing and ‘on the fly’ production starts to crumble.     And so, the Minus train rumbles on, forging a relentless path through new, uncharted territory. Magda however, remains refreshingly free from the burden of expectation. Genuinely surprised by the trajectory her life has taken yet deeply aware of the responsibility she has to her growing army of fans, she faces the future with the same wide-eyed, ‘devil may care’ attitude that has always accompanied her from city to city, from airport to airport, from disco to disco. A lonely existence? For some maybe but Magda knows more than most that home is where the heart is.   Berlin is a fickle friend, a city that throws up unlimited scope and unseen perils in equal measures. A muse to some - spurring them on to new heights of creativity, a vampire’s kiss to others - intoxicating at first, it eventually sucks them dry, leaving a hollow shell with nothing left but dreams of what might have been. Luckily, Magda already had something of the night about her when she arrived in 2003 and, liberated from the clutches of New York’s draconian attitude to club culture, she took to the Berlin underground like a fish to water. The notorious Beatstreet afterhour parties got the energy coursing through her veins once more and she immediately set about reevaluating and redefining her relationship to the music.   An intense flurry of activity followed. Together with Troy Pierce and Marc Houle, Magda began exploring new production possibilities, honing her turntable skills and extending her dj sets in order to satisfy the insatiable appetites of Berlin’s club kids. The transition was by no means straight forward, taking both time and dedication but the hybrid sound that emerged, drawing inspiration from the twin towers of Berlin and Detroit, has gone on to capture the imagination of clubbers the world over.  In this sense, last year’s mix compilation She’s a Dancing Machine represents the first volume of her audio-biography and sums up the ambition that drives this diminutive figure behind the decks. Somehow finding the time to throw down an epic 70 track, multi-layered excursion between the 130 shows she clocked up in 2006 (never mind the afterhours) really cemented her reputation, topping off a year that also saw her hold successful residencies at Robert Johnson (Offenbach), Technique (Leeds) and Fuse (Brussels) plus numerous appearances at festivals around the globe such as Lowlands, Sonar, The Detroit Music Festival and Mutek.  Yet despite reaching the enviable position of being able to choose her gigs, there is no room for complacency. Shouldering the increasing weight of expectation she has come to expect the unexpected, in fact adversity has often propelled her on to greater things. There’s also a sense of duty to keep pushing the envelope and this year she’ll be expanding her set-up to incorporate new technology in addition to the delay pedals and edits that already give her sets their distinctive flavour. It’s a move that should blur the boundaries between studio production and live performance even further and will no doubt help formulate ideas for her upcoming album which promises to be another continuous exploration into deep, dark, minimal disco.   However before that there’s a string of remixes to enjoy for 2007 including Heartthrob’s Baby Kate (Minus), Gotham Road by Ryan Crosson (Trapez) and Louderbach (Underline). It’s also worth keeping an eye on Items and Things, the new label from Magda, Marc and Troy that’s home to their more abstract, off the wall creations.   Someone once said‚ the only place success comes before work is in the dictionary. Well, Magda has definitely put in the work although she’s happier leaving the definition of success to others. The arrival is superfluous. Just like her late night musical excursions, it’s the journey that’s important and with it the desire to maintain the high standards she sets and feed the creative hunger within - if that’s also good enough for us, then so be it.  Special Thanks to Mr Meike Nolte,Rudy Delgado & Richie Hawtinhttp://www.myspace.com/minimalmagda http://www.m-nus.com/http://www.plus8.com/http://www.contakt-events.com/

Rod B. & Alvaro Garfunk bring you the Miami Underground Movement.Minimal & Tech HouseAbout João Paulo  João Paulo had his first contact with eletronic music by the age of 15, at Dr. Smith club. Everyone in town knows for sure the club’s story and its reputation to always bring the main international attractions to Rio de Janeiro. One of the club’s owner was his oldest brother, so, he was familiarized since he was a kid with the dancefloor, which made him become part of that universe. Ten years after, already grown up and comfortable at the set, João Paulo has ended up by owning the pickups and has become a resident at three carioca parties: Bootleg, Mínima and Loading. With nothing but three years of career, the DJ has already participated of the Creamfields Festival in Rio de Janeiro, the Chemical Music Festival, Paz Eletrônica, Xxxperience 100º edition, Tribe, and has already played at the following parties: Burn Energy Music, Nokia Trends Mob Jam, Tim Verão at Ipanema Beach, RBK Tops, Ballantine’s Impress and Ipanema Stereo Beach 2007/2008, representing Bootleg. In 2007, João Paulo has gone beyond the national fronteers and played at We Love Brasil, at the Carlton Hotel and at Bass Walk Records, at the club Pawl Shop, during the Winter Music Conference 2007, in Miami. Right after the conference, the DJ left to the south of Brazil, where he opened the project Life is a Loop at the club Warung, in Santa Catarina. Besides these gigs, during the Skol Beats 2007, he was invited to play at Pacha, at the party We Love Sundays. At this time, João Paulo shared the pickups with great Brazilian names of the electronic music, such as Gui Boratto, Life is a Loop, Mary Zander, Maurício Lopes, Mau Mau, Leo Janeiro, Flow & Zeo, among many others. Remarkable international artists also share the set with him. In this team, DJs like Fat Boy Slim, Booka Shade, Deep Dish, Tiga, Miss Kittin, Laurent Garnier, Josh Wink, Benni Benassi, Christian Smith, Martin Eyerer, Steve Lawler, Serge Santiago, Thomas Schumacher, Format B, Tim Healey, King Unique, Spirit Catcher, Luke Dzierzek, Tobias Lutzenkirchen are together, just to mention some of them. DJ João Paulo’s style varies among techno, tech house and minimal. At the beginning, house and electro were the first influences in his sets, basically due to his brother’s sound and also because of the vocals and mixes at that time. In Winter Music, 2006, the DJ met the minimal deeper and fell in love with this music gender. Artists like Format B, Audio Fly and Trentemoller became therefore his big influences. At the beginning of 2007, he incorporated techno and decided to add those beats in his sets. Nowadays, João Paulo doesn’t like to be considered from a specific style and his case goes from house to minimal. Another big characteristic of the DJ is his big interest in technology, mostly towards to musical universe. João Paulo researches not only music, but also last generation software like Final Scratch, Traktor DJ Studio, Serato Scratch Live and Ableton Live. The result is a vast knowledge of mixing techniques and an increasing number of tools to build songs. And the effect of it, we can see it on the dancefloor.
