BIO Former record-setting University of Colorado quarterback Joel Klatt is FOX Sports' lead college football game analyst, sitting alongside play-by-play announcer Gus Johnson and reporter Jenny Taft. In 2020, he served as the network's lead XFL analyst, working with play-by-play announcer Curt Menefee. Klatt also provides analysis leading up to and during the NFL Draft. Considered one of the most productive players to have ever played the quarterback position at Colorado, Klatt joined the program as a preferred walk-on in 2002 and set 44 school records as the Buffaloes' starter from 2003-05. He became only the third player in school history to throw for more than 2,500 yards in his first season as a starter at Colorado, racking up 2,614 yards and 21 touchdowns. Klatt finished his Colorado career as the school's all-time leader in passing yards (7,375), touchdowns (44), competition percentage (60.8) and completions (666). His 44 school records were the second-most by a Colorado student-athlete in any sport behind Byron “Whizzer” White, who set 51 as a halfback from 1934-37. Klatt is the rare analyst who can lay claim to having been a professional in two major sports. His college football career was initially delayed after he made a post-high school journey into professional baseball. Selected by the San Diego Padres in the 11th round of the 2000 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft, Klatt played two seasons in the club's minor league system before retiring from the sport to pursue a career on the gridiron at CU. Following his graduation from Colorado, he was invited to the Detroit Lions and New Orleans Saints rookie mini-camps in 2006, and was signed as a free agent by the Saints. Klatt's first opportunity in broadcasting came when he filled in as an analyst on Friday night high school football games in the Denver area in the fall of 2006 for FOX Sports Rocky Mountain. Shortly thereafter, he became a studio host for FOX Sports Southwest's Saturday college football coverage from 2007-08 and parlayed his aptitude in that setting into a package of college games as a color analyst for FOX Sports Net in 2009. Back in Denver, Klatt called upon his baseball experience to serve as host for Colorado Rockies pre- and postgame shows on Root Sports Rocky Mountain. He also hosted a series of sports radio shows in the Denver area from 2007-12, including a popular program on the FM station 104.3 The Fan from 2011-12. He left the Denver area in 2013 when he joined FS1 for its August launch. Klatt spent his first two seasons with FS1 and the FOX broadcast network as a full-time studio analyst for the network's college football coverage, host of FOX NFL KICKOFF, and part-time game analyst, primarily working Thursday night contests on FS1 as well as the 2014 Pac-12 Championship Game on FOX. Prior to the 2015 season, Klatt was elevated to FOX Sports' lead college football game analyst, teaming with play-by-play announcer Gus Johnson. Showing impressive versatility, he also contributed to FOX Sports' coverage of the U.S. Open Championship from 2015-19. Born in Denver, Klatt is married to Sara, and they have three sons.  Klatt attended Pomona High School in Arvada, Colo., lettering all four years in baseball, basketball and football.  He earned a B.A. in economics from Colorado and later served as the president of “Buffs For Life,” a non-associated alumni association that raised money for former CU athletes with a financial need. Residing in Newport Beach, Calif., Klatt enjoys playing golf and spending time with his family.

2021 Ballpark Digest Awards season continues with a chat with the Baltimore Orioles' Melanie Newman, our MLB broadcaster of the year! In this episode we discuss Newman's history-making career in MLB and MiLB broadcasting as well as reporting on other sports.  Her background includes work both as a sideline reporter for Fox Sports Southwest and  play-by-play announcer for the Frisco RoughRiders and the Salem Red Sox. Along the way she made some history when she teamed up with Suzie Cool to form the first all-female broadcast team in professional baseball on a Salem Red Sox broadcast in 2019.She then was part of two more important events in 2021, become part of the first all-female crew to call an MLB game, as she called the action with Sarah Langs, Alanna Rizzo, Heidi Watney and Lauren Gardner on a YouTube broadcast on July 21. She followed that up by teaming up with analyst Jessica Mendoza to call a game on ESPN on Sept. 29.Joining the Baltimore Orioles for the 2020 season, she has yet to experience what anyone would call a "normal" season: she made her O's debut on August 4, 2020, and in 2021 she called all the Orioles games--but called many of them at home when the team was on the road. Jesse Goldberg-Strassler is Voice of the Lansing Lugnuts and author of The Baseball Thesaurus and the upcoming second edition of The Football Thesaurus, both from August Publications. The Power Play is POPPIN’. Dallas Stars beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 6-3. It’s the third time already this season they’ve scored six or more goals. They had three games of six more more all of last SEASON. Joe Pavelski had two goals and two assists. Jake Oettinger with 23 saves. Stars stay in Columbus for one tomorrow night at 6 on FSSW. It was the marquee game in perhaps the marquee conference this season. It didn’t turn out that close. Baylor matches its best start in school history last night. The Bears mosied down I-35 and took down Texas at the drum 83-69.  They are 17-0. Each win has been by at least eight. That hasn’t happened in 31 years since UNLV. They were decent. Texas had two brief leads. How about these other notes from college basketball twitter. 1) Bears have beaten the Longhorns 10 of the last eleven times they’ve met. And 2) Baylor is 10-1 in its last 11 games vs ranked teams. That hasn’t been done in 45 years. Davion Mitchell and Jared Butler both went over 20 and combined for eight threes.  The Baptists look to make it 18-0 Saturday when they host TCU. Andrew Jones 25 in the setback. Texas is down to 11-4. They are in stillwater Saturday. ….Aggies have had to pause their activities and that includes postponing their tilt against Vandy tonight. Multiple positive C-19 cases inside the aggies program…  #5 Houston is in the cozy hamlet of Greenville, NC. Coogs have won 8 straight. In their last six they’ve won by an average of 21….SMU is at Tulsa on ESPNU… TCU home to Oklahoma State on espn2…. SFA is a double-digit road favorite at A&M-CC. Lumberjacks are 6-1 in league play. .. Incarnate Word plays over in Beaumont at Lamar. Rockets run it back in OKC. Two nights after a franchise-record 28 threes they play a Thunder team on the skids. Houston has won six in a row. They’ve been the best defense in the league since the James Harden trade.Early jump on ATT SW …. Mavericks are somehow 1.5 point road favorites in Atlanta. Despite their  six-game losing streak. Kristaps Porzingas probably won’t play. Atlanta has won 11 of their last 13 against the Mavs. The pillow fight will ensue at 6:30 on Fox Sports Southwest. … Spurs try to find their winning ways again. They close a seven-game homestand against Minnesota 'The Texas Porch' is available on Apple, Spotify, Google, Stitcher, Tune-in, I-Heart and all major podcast outlets.
