Part 1:We talk with Joe Jaworski, the son of Leon Jaworski, Joe was the former Mayor of Galveston TX, he ran for AG in 2022 lost in the democratic runoff. We discuss Texas politics, and specifically, the actions of the current AG, Ken Paxton. Paxton has been attacking fellow Republicans in Texas who have not bowed to his wishes. and who do not agree about who should lead the Texas House. Currently, Texas is a dangerous place to live for both citizens and immigrants. This is due to the draconian laws that have been passed recently, and also to the impending problems that will occur if many undocumented workers are deported: They pay taxes locally, and many cities and counties will lose that income. Additionally, many people are being sued or sent to prison as a result of new regulations and laws being implemented.Part 2:We talk with Harold Meyerson and Bill Curry.Bill Curry was a Connecticut state senator, comptroller and two time Democratic nominee for governor who served as Counselor to the President in the Clinton White House. He has written for Salon, the Daily Beast, the HuffingtonPost and the HartfordCourant and has provided commentary on National Public Radio, MSNBC and many other news outlets.Harold MeyersonSince 2001, Harold Meyerson has been an editor of The American Prospect, the Washington-based liberal magazine, oscillating between the positions of Editor at Large and Executive Editor (his current post). We discuss the California fires and Trump's response to the disasters. We also discuss the new reality: truth no longer matters, only the misinformation that is promulgated by Republicans. We also discuss what Democrats should be doing to mitigate this problem. There seems to be a vanishing Democratic resistance to Trump.WNHNFM.ORG productionMusic: David Rovics, "Time to Act", for Will Von Sproson

Tonight, it's a Road Trip with Da Panda and new comer Kiwi Keasha! Tonight, we focus on a small island in the south of Texas, Galveston! This little island is packed with ghosts and ghastly sad stories, much of which is thanks to a hurricane that hits this island in 1900.
On June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and issued General Order No. 3 which informed the enslaved African Americans of their ...
It is Juneteenth, the National Holiday that celebrates African Americans in Galveston Texas, finally learning that slavery was abolished.
It's a different kind of road trip this week, as we learn all about the Juneteenth holiday and talk with a variety of guests about different places around Michigan that hold special significance for African American history and culture. Juneteenth marks the final emancipation of slaves during the Civil War, on June 19 in Galveston Texas. Today, it is a day of celebration and education. We kick off the show with Chris Grier, who shares with us both the history and significance of the Juneteenth holiday. Grier is the historian for Idlewild, located near Baldwin, and known as the "Black Eden of Michigan. He was both born and raised at this special spot, and his grandfather was one of the founding members. We discuss the importance of Idelwild to it's members, and to the community as a whole. We also discuss how a certain movie brought attention to Idelwild's history, but also completely got the location wrong. Idlewild is in Michigan, not Georgia! Then, we meet with Cynthia Jones, who is the Director of Museum Experiences at The Henry Ford in Dearborn. Did you know that the bus that Rosa Parks sat down in and helped galvanize the Civil Rights Movement is right here? You can even climb on to experience history firsthand. We talk about why items of cultural significance are so important, and how The Henry Ford has integrated it into their exhibit "With Liberty and Justice for All".Annie Kelly from the Calhoun County Visitors Bureau stops by and we discuss the long history the Underground Railroad had in this part of Michigan. Known as a safe stop for escaped slaves, usually on their journey to Canada and freedom, Calhoun County, which includes Battle Creek, Marshall and Albion, now boasts several tributes to this time in history. We talk about the Underground Railroad memorial that you can experience here, as well as a 12-foot-tall statue of activist Sojourner Truth, who ended up calling Battle Creek her home for the last decades of her life.We close out this special show with Dr. David Pilgrim of Ferris State University. He is one of this country's leading experts on issues relating to multiculturalism, diversity, and race relations, and is the founder and curator of the Jim Crow Museum. The museum uses objects of intolerance to teach tolerance and promote social justice and has over 20,000 artifacts. It's a difficult topic, but one that is very important to study and learn from. Dr. Pilgrim has personally collected most of the collection and has developed a traveling exhibit so more people can experience it. He is also working on a permanent spot to house the collection on Ferris' campus. A marine mishap of significant proportions occurred this Wednesday in Galveston, Texas, as a barge made unwelcome contact with a bridge. The result of this unfortunate maritime incident were twofold: the leakage of oil into the neighboring waters, and the disruption of vehicular access to a tiny, nearby island, as confirmed by local authorities. Pelican Island, situated north of Galveston, was the small island affected as its primary access link - a bridge - bore the brunt of the barge's impact. According to reports, the incident occurred early in the day, around 9:30 a.m, as conveyed by Ronnie Varela, a representative from the Galveston's Office of Emergency Management. As per Varela, detailed knowledge of the extent of the bridge's structural damage, or potential human casualties, if any, wasn't immediately available following the event. However, it was unequivocally clear to the officials that the barge's impact had caused a significant volume of oil to spill into the surrounding waters. Varela informed that dedicated crews were promptly assigned and were actively working to remediate and control the pollution situation. In a disturbing revelation, the Galveston County Sheriff's Office communicated to local media outlet KTRK that the bridge wasn't just hit, but endured a substantial blow. This was corroborated by unsettling images broadcast by KTRK, showing pieces of solid concrete, clearly knocked off the bridge, languishing on the barge. We roll into this week’s show with LeBron flinching on a woman in the front row of the Nuggets-Lakers Game 5, and how Rob felt about the Lakers performance as they were eliminated in the first round. Rob thinks Denver is vulnerable as they prepare to take on the high-powered Timberwolves, and while Rob picks Minnesota to win and advance, B-Dog thinks Denver will show the championship pedigree and find a way to win. Plus we debate about whether LeBron played his final game as a Laker – and while Rob says no, he does think the Lakers move on from Darvin Ham. The wild Suns payroll has our heads spinning as rumors circulate about them moving on from Frank Vogel, and we all discuss how Kyrie and Harden have both been exceptional in the Clippers-Mavericks series. We also get into Joel Embiid’s dirty play against the Knicks, and from there a debate about whether Embiid is a dirty player across his career. And we dive head first into the NFL Draft with a debate about whether the Falcons were wise or stupid to draft Michael Penix Jr after signing Kirk Cousins in the offseason – and amazing Draft audio from Xavier Leggette and Keon Coleman who both set the Internet on fire this week. We close out with Reggie getting his Heisman back, audio of the week from Charles Barkley as he took on the city of Galveston Texas, a Big Shot of the Week to a couple of barbers who saved a young girl’s life, and an eye-opening NBA game called Salary Cap.

George Marcus wrote a book you probably haven't heard of, but should. It is called Lives in Trust and it was published in 1992 and is $146 on Amazon right now. Professor Marcus is an anthropologist who studied tribes in Tonga and then applied what he learned to study dynastic wealth in families starting in Texas. The book has great essays on the HL Hunt family, who tried to corner the silver market in 1980, the Bingham family, who fought over a newspaper chain in Kentucky, a study of two very different family fortunes in Galveston Texas, and an analysis of one of my favorite books, Old Money by Nelson Aldrich. He discusses the importance of your image of your ancestors and the creation of family ideology, the emptiness at the center of the Getty fortune, and a great essay by his collaborator the late respected philanthropic scholar Peter Dobkin Hall on the efforts of the Rockefeller family to control the narratives told about the family over decades. In our discussion today, we talk about his career, the book, his interesting concept that he calls the “dynastic uncanny” and his fascinating dive into the meaning of nobility in the current-day Portuguese aristocracy. I hope you enjoy my conversation with George Marcus. Biography: George Marcus is one of the world's leading anthropologists. He is the Chancellor's Professor at the University of California, Irving, and previously chaired the anthropology department at Rice University for twenty-five years. He is the author of dozens of books and articles including Ethnography Through Thick and Thin and Lives in Trust: The Fortunes of Dynastic Families in Late Twentieth-Century America. Professor Marcus received a B.A. from Yale in 1968 and a Ph.D from Harvard in 1976. NOTE: This podcast is for educational and entertainment purposes only. Live from the Heart of America—I'm Steve Gruber— Your Soldier of Truth—the Tip of the Spear against socialists—here ready to fight for you from the Foxhole of Freedom—AND—REMEMBER TO THINK while its still legal—this is the Steve Gruber Show— Here are 3 big things you need to know right now— Number One— Mitch McConnell had another bad episode in front of TV cameras—locking up after a question and not being able to respond—its time to go Mitch—and take Joey with you—enjoy the ice cream— Number Two— There is no green transition going on—at least not in the country's that would matter—like China and India—no the Climate Change thing means nothing over there—despite all the hysteria over here— Number Three— Hurricane Idalia—has gotten a lot of press this week as the Mainstream Media reported breathlessly that this was an historic and unprecedented storm—I am going to argue it was neither— Yes it was a pretty big hurricane—BUT then again most of them are—I mean—THEY ARE HURRICANES AFTERALL— And it was only historic because there isn't any record of one hitting quite where Idalia come on shore at Big Bend—BUT so what? Of the hundreds of communities on the coast of Florida—I am pretty sure there are a whole lot more that have never been hit by a hurricane either— The other claim is that this storm was unprecedented—also false—at least to me it is— I mean sure—it hit this stretch of coast that has not had a hurricane since at least 1851—and so what? Fort Myers got hit last year for the first time in a century—sometimes these storms hit new places and sometimes they hit old places— BUT guess what? Hurricanes were here long before Republicans could be blamed for it raining—and getting windy—but that of course did not slow down or change the inevitable—which is the climate harlots screaming its your fault and mine—for driving a car, using Air Conditioning, cooking on a gas stove—and cooking red meat for that matter— None of that has anything to do with storms—the worst decade for horrible hurricanes in America—was the 1950's—I am pretty sure Camille back in 1969—a Cat 5 monster still rates as the most powerful and historic hurricane in Florida history—but there have been many—like Andrew, Hugo, Irma and Floyd… and those are ones I can remember off the top of my head—this one will soon be forgotten—those will never be forgotten— Of course there will always be Katrina—and if you didn't know the deadliest hurricane in US history came in the year 1900—Galveston Texas—and nobody actually knows how many people died in that monster storm—but somewhere between 8,000 and 12,000—and the bodies were rotting in the streets after the storm surge finally receded— But like I said—the Climate Nazi's were screaming loudly—and oh so predictably—that somehow this medium strength hurricane—is some sort of sign of doom— Well at last glance—Idalia had claimed 2 lives—2! One in Florida and one in Georgia—not exactly a hurricane apocalypse— But there is a lot of rain—and people without power—but more people lost power in Michigan last week than did folks in Florida yesterday—only about 250,000 were without electricity at the end of the day Wednesday— But look that doesn't fit the narrative— So, the White House with a failing President pushed the senile old man in front of cameras to push the same unsupported claims of climate change —in the desperate hope to gin up votes— But people are catching on—even those that once not only believed in man made climate change—BUT spread that gospel to the world—scientists once emersed in the fiction and the fraud are coming out of the climate fog— Don't get me wrong there will be plenty of clean-up in Florida—and it will take time—and that is why law and order will be the biggest concern for the next few days— Have you ever wondered just how far these Climate Nazi's will go in an effort to persuade you—that we are all going to die and die very soon unless we return to the stone age immediately? Well let me tell you I am rarely shocked—BUT this one really got my attention—because you really have to be some kind of special stupid to have this come out of your mouth— Yep—soon if you keep driving to work and using your AC, water heater and stove—you will be boiling in your own sweat— I mean, do these nitwits even hear what they are saying? Do they realize people can hear them when they utter these jaw-dropping and utterly stupid things? Wow—momma did raise some fools huh? ANYWAY—back to the end of the world—how about the wildfires in Hawaii—that were triggered by faulty power lines and fueled by 80 mph winds—while some other climate Nazi withheld the water—because it is a Godlike substance—yeah whats going on there? And in the end—even the Director of FEMA is not willing to blame climate change or fossil fuels or any other left wing fantasy demons for a Hurricane—that is even a bridge too far for her—BUT she gets in some punches—

Sam and Emma host Robin D.G. Kelley, professor of American History at UCLA, to discuss Juneteenth, observed today. First, however, Sam and Emma dive into Gustavo Petro's victory in Colombia's presidential election over a mayoral tycoon, Melanchon's coalition topping Macron's (and both being beaten out by LePen's), Iowa's Supreme Court overturning the state constitution's protection of abortion rights, and the outright refusal of liberals to hold any ranking Republican accountable for the stochastic terrorism that led to 1/6. Then, they're joined by Professor Kelley as he first tackles the classic story behind the holiday, celebrating the arrival of Union forces in Galveston Texas to deliver the good news of emancipation, supposedly marking the official end of slavery in the US, and contrasts this with the way Black folks in Texas celebrated this moment, referring to it as a “jubilee” and a recognition of their divine sovereignty over their own life and land, as they look forwards to right to vote and the promise of reconstruction. Continuing off this, Kelley, Sam, and Emma discuss the actual history of the emancipation proclamation as leaving out some 450k enslaved people, the actual freedom of these people coming through their own agency and fight as they flocked to help union forces, and the role Texas played as a haven for slave owners escaping this “tyranny.” After touching on the continuation of this fight, with the right's bulwark against history and the liberals' own erasure in favor of uplifting a fallacy of unity, Professor Kelley dives into celebrating Juneteenth in a way that genuinely raises these issues and views this date as the start of a new war for reconstruction, working towards the reparations and decolonization that were seen in the promise of reconstruction, and expanding it to fights for indigenous people from Palestine to the US. Then they expand the discussion to the relationship between racism and capitalism (or just racial capitalism), how the birth of this economic system occurred in a European society that centered on racial and gendered differences for social delineations, and thus had access to a mode of thinking that legitimized the exploitation of “lesser” people. Next, they look to the development of capitalism in the United States, and how it built up white patrimony to deceive the majority of white Americans, and patriotism and nationalism for the rest, indoctrinating them into a world where racial and ethnic hierarchy are standards, before they wrap up the interview by emphasizing that class struggle is not colorblind, anti-racism is not anti-class, and that to truly fight these powers and live up to the promise of Juneteenth's jubilee, we have to simultaneously take on these overlapping systems. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma cover Trump speaking out against the accusations of him calling Mike Pence a wimP**** when really, he just meant Pence lacked courage, Brendan from PA calls in to discuss the upcoming Pennsylvania races and why the GOP is going unopposed in 3 of the 17 house races, and discuss the Democrats' desire to not politicize the 1/6 coup attempt. Adam Schiff discusses Clarence Thomas' conflicts of interest before Sonya Sotomayor comes to Thomas' rescue, because how could you ever force a man to resign when he knows his colleagues' names. Krystal Ball embarrasses Bill Maher by having a reasonable recollection of the last two years, Denis Prager calls out the left for refusing to debate him, and ignores the calls for debate, and a Missouri Senate Candidate, accused of all sorts of violence against women and children, launches his RINO Hunting campaign.
