Today, I'm joined by Ganza Moise, a Rwandan writer and filmmaker, to talk about his art and the Rwandan film community. We unpack the themes and artistic direction of two of his recent independent films, “Sensory Overload” and “Mazunga.” Ganza describes the unexpected ways that he frames characters and explores philosophical, existential questions that so many of us grapple with. He also touches on the transitional nature of his generation and highlights some of the filmmaking and distribution challenges in Rwanda. “Sensory Overload” is an audio-visual experience based on Natacha Muzira's poem about the liberating power of imagination. He explores similar themes in “Mazunga,” which is about a taxi motorcyclist who is forced to face his internal conflicts when the whole world shuts down during the pandemic. In our conversation, Ganza explains why he's drawn to these types of stories and breaks down his artistic process. I ask Ganza about the generation of Rwandans who teeter the Millennials/Gen-Z line. He illustrates how he and his peers are doing a lot of talking, thinking, and creating to find their cultural identity in a country that is very ambitious, but also mourning the atrocities of genocide from the not-to-distant past. Part of the country's rapid growth is reflected in the film scene. Ganza is the co-founder of KIRURI mfn, an arts production and distribution company. Autumn Ganza once halted a demolition of a hoarder house by taking on a private company and Bridgeport Alderman Patrick Daley Thompson. She broke into the building through a boarded-up window and carried out dozens of cats, she said, one by one. In mid-winter Chicago. That was just the live ones. She feeds feral cats across the South Side. She traps the ones she can catch, takes them to a vet, pays for the neuter and spaying, then releases them back to their Bridgeport abodes. If she can find them a home, she will, but many are too “wild” to be tamed, and are fit only to roam their home city block. Ganza does it on her own dime. Friends sometimes chip in, but most of it — the work, the money — comes from her. Because demand for her services has grown, she's formed Kitty Empire, a trap, neuter, release organization whose nonprofit status is pending. He and his colleges hosted events, and promoted artist gaining quiet a big following doing so “Everyone knew who Ganza was. I was always active, on billboards, on the radio” “I never saw myself as one specific thing I can do, I always wanted to do a whole lot of things to entertain people” – Dider Ganza In 2007 Dider ganza started working at local radio station Contact FM where he interviewed some of the biggest artist in Africa. After building his small empire back home and becoming a local celebrity Dider Ganza decided to move state side to Storm Lake, Iowa to attend Buena Vista University for International Business and eventually landed at Full Sail University for Film not to long after that. He is currently making a name for himself in the Photography portion of the entertainment industry by releasing high quality music videos for artist around the world that has the Internet talking!
