One of the toughest challenges in military human performance is how to implement programs that work for reserve service members. With only a couple days a month of direct interaction, how do you improve their health and fitness behaviors the rest of the month? Who better to workshop solutions to this issue with than the Chief of the Army Reserve? Lieutenant General Robert Harter was an H2F skeptic at first (we discuss why), but now he's a believer and trying to mobilize the right leaders and resources to improve human performance for his part time soldiers. LTG Harter was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on August 1, 2024, and assumed the dual role of Chief of Army Reserve and Commanding General, U.S. Army Reserve Command. As the Chief of Army Reserve, LTG Harter is the principal advisor on Army Reserve matters to the Secretary of the Army and the Chief of Staff of the Army. As Commanding General of U.S. Army Reserve Command, he leads a community-based force of more than 174,000 Citizen Soldiers and 11,000 Civilians – with a footprint that encompasses all 50 states, five U.S. territories, and more than 23 countries across the globe. His previous General Officer assignments include Commanding General of the 81st Readiness Division, Deputy Chief of Army Reserve, Chief of Staff for Army Material Command, and Commanding General, 316th Expeditionary Sustainment Command (deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom). After graduating from Virginia Tech in 1988 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in communication, LTG Harter received his Active Duty commission as a Field Artillery Officer. He also holds a Master of Science degree in National Security Strategy from the National War College. As his initial Active Duty assignment, LTG Harter served as a platoon leader in the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, Bad Hersfeld, Germany (deployed to Desert Storm). After branch transferring to the Ordnance Corps, he completed Active Duty assignments with the 101st Corps Support Group, Fort Campbell, Kentucky, and the U.S. Army Munition Center and School, Redstone Arsenal, Alabama. LTG Harter then transferred from Active Duty to the Active Guard and Reserve (AGR) program in 1999. His AGR assignments include Support Operations Officer, 55th Sustainment Brigade, Distribution Management Center Chief, 316th Expeditionary Sustainment Command (deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom), and Assistant Chief of Staff, Office of Chief of Army Reserve. You all know, I'm a big fan of free financial help. It's a major benefit service members receive while on active duty and in retirement. It's also a benefit available to their family members. Just like anything in life, sometimes the information isn't relayed correctly.  In this episode, I talk with Lieutenant General (retired) Raymond V. Mason, the director of Army Emergency Relief, about some of the misconceptions about military aid societies and the resources AER provides.  General Mason became the ninth Director of Army Emergency Relief on 1 January 2017. General Mason retired from the United States Army in October 2014, after serving 35 years on active duty, the last 12 as a General Officer. Following retirement, General Mason joined VT Systems in Alexandria, VA, as the Chief Operating Officer. VTS is a US-based company with global commercial and government/military-focused capabilities in Aerospace, Shipbuilding, Ground Systems, and Electronics; including over 5,000 employees and $1.2B in annual revenue. She retired from the military as a Brigadier General. Becky specializes in inspirational and motivational speaking, developing leader training programs, leader coaching and mentoring. Becky has provided hundreds of keynote speeches and leadership training to the corporate and academic sectors at both national and international engagements. Becky entered West Point in 1977 with just the second class of women, and was the first person from her hometown to graduate from the academy. She was also the first female graduate of West Point (‘81) to be promoted to General Officer in 2004. Becky served and commanded in combat as the first female Commanding General at the strategic level of leadership in Iraq. In 2007 she received the National Women's History Project award for “Generations of Women Moving History Forward”.In this episode of the WPAOG Network Podcast, Becky talks about how she enjoys being a leader and why she sees herself as a role model for both men and women. Becky explains how her time at West Point and in the military provided her with many important skills and experiences that are transferable to the work she does today advising businesses on how to be better. She also gives insight on some of her proudest moments in the military and why it is important to be an honest, open, and direct mentor to help others succeed in the military and life thereafter. -----------"You should be comfortable wanting to surround yourself with really good people. I mean, I worked for some bosses who they were intimidated by other people that were good and I'm like, I pray to be surrounded by great people, right? Like, I mean, I'm not intimidated by other people being better, smarter, faster than me. I want them on my team. But I also want people on my team that think differently, you know, I don't want my team to look just like me. And I had a great boss who said to me, just don't surround yourself with little Becky Halsteads. I was like, what's wrong with little Becky Halstead sir, you know? And he says, you think about it, you'll figure it out. And then I did. Because you know, if I were to just choose all women to work for me and you know, all white women to work for me, then I wouldn't get the diversity of thought and experience and culture and all the rest of that. So it's like no pick people who think differently than me to surround me to challenge my thinking, to challenge our way ahead, you know, and then I have to be wise enough and smart enough to discern what's best if I'm the one that's in charge to move us forward." - BG (R) Rebecca S. This evening we are sitting down with a person that has been at the center of controversy and conversation for a few months now. He was jailed and removed from his job as the Battalion CO at Advanced Infantry Training Battalion, School of Infantry East, on Camp Lejeune; following a series of videos that were criticizing the upper echelons of the Corps. The disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan was a failure in planning and execution at the strategic level and in the eyes of LtCol. Scheller, someone needed to be held accountable. It is no question that there were mistakes made, but when “Big Marine Corps” went after Scheller it raised my curiosity. Why would the ranks try to rip this man apart so badly, for something that a solid swath of the population agreed with? The warfighting population that is. In episode 17 we had LtCol. Retired Jonathan Myers on the show where we covered his book, “American to the Corps”. In the book and the interview, he talked about the withdrawal from Afghanistan as well. He was with the J5 Intelligence Joint staff as an intelligence officer. According to Myers, the capabilities of the Taliban and the possibilities of them taking back control of the country were always being briefed. None of the plans being briefed included leaving overnight, he stated that it was unheard of. He mentioned “if you ask anybody the rank of Colonel and above, you going to get one answer as to whether or not the Taliban is going to take over after we leave. If you ask anybody Lieutenant Colonel and below, especially you guys having served there and worked alongside the Afghan National Army, not special forces allies and translators, you're going to get a completely different answer”. He added that “Once you hit Colonel and General Officer it becomes politics, all politics”. When enough sane-minded people are saying the same thing, it might be worth looking into. I told many of my friends that the only way for what Scheller did, to make sense to me, is if he follows through. The groundwork has been laid, and the movement is underway. The words “America needs leaders, not politicians” can be found at the top of his website followed by these words. “America's Problem: The American representative democracy's greatest threat is the current state of divisiveness. Great Republics don't fail from external forces. Like ancient Rome and Yugoslavia, they fail from internal strife and decay. This often-unspoken problem corrodes the American way of life from the inside. The polarization of key departments in the American government, such as defense and justice, are symptomatic of the same problem. Furthermore, the critical issues facing America's future (national debt, immigration, and an ineffective military system to name a few) are consistently unaddressed because solutions don't fall perfectly in-line with one political party's dogma. The American people are at an inflection point and must decide soon if the current form of government still serves their interests”. Tonight, we will find out from Stuart Scheller himself about his choices, his follow-through, and his upcoming book, “Crisis of Command”. LtCol. Scheller, Sir thanks for coming on the show to chat for a bit. I want to end up where the monologue ends, but I need to know how we got here.

Today Jan Hicks is living her best life as a farmer, mother, and doting grandmother. When she retired as a two-star Major General in 2013, she was serving as the Commanding General of the United States Army Signal Corps. I had the tremendous good fortune of serving under Jan when she was the Battalion Commander of the 125th Signal Battalion in Helemano, Hawaii. Leokani Okauwila - a Hawaiian phrase that translates into Voice of Lightning - was the motto of our unit that provided tactical communications support to the 25th Infantry Division.  If you've read the first chapter of my book, you'll be familiar with the story about my boss poking me in the chest with some salty language. Jan Hicks was that boss. She was also one of the most inspiring, authentic, and deeply kind leaders I have ever had the privilege of serving under. By the way, if you haven't read the first chapter of my book, what are you waiting for? I'm giving the first chapter away for free here, so please check it out!  As a freshly minted Lieutenant, I was doubtful that I would ever be able to succeed in the army while at the same time being my authentic self. Though we never spoke about it directly, Jan embodied authenticity and kindness so thoroughly that I have known for the rest of my life that it is 100% possible to be myself and be effective as a leader.  I have to confess, I got a little more emotional than usual recording this episode. I didn't realize until we were speaking the full extent of Jan's impact on me all these years later. I'm so grateful that I had the opportunity to serve with this incredible human being who knows in her bones who she is and what she stands for. I hope that listening to this episode strengthens your own conviction to be true to yourself and kind to others.  Show Notes: How to handle a man mansplaining to you that he can't work for you because you're a woman.  The “rest of the story” behind Becky's infamous “unfuck this, Lieutenant” moment. What it was like being the first General Officer in the Army who was also a mom.  The profound gift of life-long friendships.  You can opt out of being miserable.  How life's pendulum will eventually swing back in your favor.  The ripple effect of embodying goodness and kindness. Today, Preston and Sayre were fortunate to be joined by Major General (Retired) John Harrel to discuss the ongoing war in Ukraine. MG Harrel spent over 50 years as a military officer—beginning as an Infantry Marine Second Lieutenant to becoming the Commanding General of the California National Guard. He has a master's degree in history from California State University-Northridge and a law degree from SW University School of Law. We discuss how over the last 30 years since the collapse of the USSR, the California National Guard has trained the Ukrainian military in American/NATO military doctrine resulting in decades long relationships forged between American military leaders such as MG Harrel and Ukrainian military officers and soldiers. We discuss the in-depth amount of training the Ukrainians have received over the years from its American and NATO allies, and how that compares to Russia's preparation and disposition over the same time frame. We discuss how the American/NATO military philosophies of utilizing non-commissioned officers to take initiative and “get the job done” has been ingrained into the Ukrainian military, and how that compares to how little the Russian doctrine has changed—if at all—since the fall of the Soviet Union. We discuss how this lack of what we would call “fundamental training” related to small unit tactics has resulted in the current Russian ineffectiveness we are seeing—from their faulty intelligence received prior to the invasion, to their widespread corruption causing much of the logistical issues currently facing the Russian military. It was a pleasure to speak with MG Harrel as he provided much insight and context to the current conflict from the perspective of a General Officer.

He provides insight about navigating life as a junior officer, and then as a general officer in high stakes situations. McChrystal discusses a Rolling Stone article about his command group and how he handled the fallout and changes to his career that led to starting a new business. He also provides thoughts on mentorship, transitioning from the military to civilian life, and the importance of taking care of yourself. --------------"I will tell you the people who decide whether you are successful, ultimately in the army, are your peers. Because as you go up that pyramid gets a bit narrower. Decisions are made when people, your reputation, what people say about you, whether people trust you, that sort of thing. And it goes all the way into promotion boards. And so I would say that think about being respected, being the kind of person people want on their flank, being the kind of person they want their son or daughter or brother or sister to work for.
