Stephanie Stuckey used her life's savings to buy the company that is her family's legacy. At it's height in the1960's and 70's, there were hundreds of Stuckey's stores selling gas, pecan candy, cold drinks, and quick meals near highway exits around the United States. But after her grandfather was bought out by a big corporation, the neglected enterprise and its stores fell into disrepair. Since buying what remained of the company five years ago, Stephanie—an attorney and former Georgia State Representative with no prior business experience—has been on a mission to restore the brand to its former glory. She relishes Stuckey's history and philosophy of hospitality that welcomed *all* travelers during an era when segregation was the rule. Her inspiring story is that hopeless romantic who puts it all on the line to celebrate what's good and authentic in the world. Stephanie lives in Atlanta. She loves sweet tea, R.E.M., and the Georgia Bulldogs. Follow Stephanie on Instagram and LinkedIn and getcha some Pecan Log Rolls on the Stuckey's website. Oh, and buy her book here.

Nsé Ufot has helped register nearly 600,000 Georgia voters. In this episode of Monuments to Me, Nsé shares her passion for impact, politics, and change with listeners - including a compelling case for why Black women should vote. To Nsé, voting is an act of self-love. Focusing less on the actual vote, she argues that showing up and speaking out is a profound method of mobilizing voters of color toward a better future. Because of Black women, Georgia turned red to blue in the 2020 presidential election - and the effects have been widespread. In 2014 Nsé was introduced to Stacey Abrams, Georgia State Representative and House Majority Leader for the Georgia General Assembly. After showing up to the conversation doubtful of Stacey's vision, Nsé realized that she was looking at the real deal - and that Stacey's strategy would change American politics forever. For the past seven years, Nsé has served as the Chief Executive Officer of the New Georgia Project (NGP) and the New Georgia Project Action Fund (NGPAF), leading a team of culture creators, organizers, activists, and thinkers to build a movement home for young folks and people of color. Nsé was born in Nigeria and raised in Southwest Atlanta, Georgia. As a proud naturalized citizen, Nse's experience as part of an immigrant family living in the deep south has shaped her commitment to civil and human rights. Throughout her career, Nsé has been dedicated to creating impact and change around issues that center civil, human, and workers' rights. The old band gets back together for this week's episode as my former partners Edward Lindsey and Robert Luskin join the show. Edward was one of my first bosses and him and Robert were very influential in my development as a lawyer. I consider both of them mentors. Edward cofounded Goodman McGuffey Lindsey Aust in 1990 and we hear the story of how that happened. In true Edward style, you will hear the role singer Meatloaf played in the decision. Edward also served 10 years as a Georgia State Representative including 3 terms as the House Majority Whip. He is now a partner in Denton's Public Policy practice and serves as the head of the Firm's Georgia State Government Affairs team. His focus is on advancing the public policy interests and objectives of clients in the transportation, infrastructure, health care and education sectors. Robert started at Goodman McGuffey in 2000 and remained there until earlier this year when he took a job as a partner in the national trial firm of Chartwell where he defends corporations in various complex litigation matters including product liability, premises liability, professional negligence, questionable insurance claims and employment related matters. We reminisce about our days working together at GMLJ and how we approached defending our cases, marketing to corporate clients and managing a team of lawyers. We discuss the “right way” to practice law, try cases and to become recognized as a “lawyer's lawyer”. Finally, we talk about the importance of building a firm with a family feel. Of course we tell war stories about some of our favorite times and cases. Edward talks about his career in politics and serving in the Georgia House. He talked about what inspired him to do so and his current role in the Government Affairs team in the world's largest law firm. Robert talks about his transition to Chartwell and the scope of his now national practice. Its World Cup season so we break down USA's chances in group play and pick our winners. This was a special episode for me. Please enjoy. As always, this episode is powered by the J. Stein Law Firm. A personal injury law firm in Atlanta, GA. The firm can be found at www.jsteinlawfirm.com.
We sit down with Georgia State Representative Clay Pirkle for a candid conversation about his background in agriculture, path to politics, and the legislation he hopes will benefit farmers everywhere. Please excuse our cicada "guest stars"! They were very excited about hearing Mr. Pirkle speak :)

On this episode of Etch The Edges we have the pleasure of speaking with Georgia State Representative Greg Kennard. In the state of Georgia like so many other states the ideological divide feels impossible to overcome. One side of the aisle holds the power and the other side is relegated to the sidelines. In the manner of a true aspiring statesman Representative Kennard shares with us how no matter how charged the road, you must walk it. You must reach out to the other side. You must endeavor to work together. You must believe that we can find common ground and find a better way. Take the time to hear his story, understand his context, and hear why it is important to etch the edges. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/etchtheedges/support
On this episode of Etch The Edges we speak with Georgia State Representative Shelly Hutchinson. She represents House District 107, the city of Snellville in Gwinnett County, where everything is greater. Yeah, it's a thing, or still a thing, depends on your point of view. Some think it's getting weaker, dirtier, uglier, less intelligent. These adjectives are indicative of the state of Georgia politics, as evidenced by the new Jim Crow law passed in our great state. Please listen as Shelly illuminates the struggle, shares her journey, walking through petty kindergarten politics and man-sized misogyny in the halls of power. This is worth your time. Hear her and understand why she is no politician, but rather what we all want in office, an aspiring statesman. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/etchtheedges/support

Electors in all 50 states and the District of Columbia gathered to cast their votes and affirmed Joe Biden as the 46th President of the United States. The states Biden won and Trump challenged—Arizona, Nevada, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin—all cast their electoral votes for the president-elect. Biden declared it’s time to “turn the page. To unite. To heal” in a speech to the nation. George Conway is a conservative lawyer and co-founder of the Lincoln Project. He’s been an outspoken critic of President Trump and he tells Anderson Cooper that Trump is delusional for not accepting the election results and is basically running “a scam on the American people.” Plus, early voting is underway in Georgia for the two critical Senate runoffs that will determine the balance of power in Congress. Biden is set to campaign for the Democratic candidates, Jon Ossoff and Rev. Raphael Warnock. Many have credited Stacey Abrams, a former Georgia State Representative, for helping Biden become the first Democrat to win the state in nearly three decades. She joins AC360 to react to Biden securing the electoral college votes and says it was a “thrilling relief” and it’s disappointing the President is trying to undermine the integrity of the vote. Instead, they become the first party to mount their nominating convention online. Can a virtual convention, with online speeches and meetings, unify and energize delegates as they head into the crucial final months of the campaign? Our panelists included Mayor Hardie Davis, Mayor of Augusta, Jim Galloway, the lead political writer with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and Tharon Johnson, Senior advisor for the Biden campaign in Georgia and Rep. Beth Moore, a Georgia State Representative.
Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp (R) has signed three innovative PBM reform bills into law. HB 946 and SB 313 require the reporting of drugs paid 10 percent above and 10 percent below National Average Drug Acquisition Cost every four months, prohibit PBMs from tying a pharmacy's drug reimbursement to a patient's health outcomes, and require PBMs to offer drug coverage plans that do not include spread pricing and plans that allow plan sponsors to receive 100 percent of rebates negotiated by PBMs. HB 918 strengthens existing anti-steering provisions and the Pharmacy Audit Bill of Rights. Congratulations to the Georgia Pharmacy Association and all pharmacy advocates for these wins which will protect pharmacies, patients, and payers. The Context of White Supremacy hosts the weekly Compensatory Call-In. We encourage non-white listeners to dial in with their codified concepts, new terms, observations, research findings, workplace problems or triumphs, and/or suggestions on how best to Replace White Supremacy With Justice ASAP. We'll use these sessions to hone our use of words as tools to reveal truth, neutralize White people. We'll examine news reports from the past seven days and - hopefully - promote a constructive dialog. #ANTIBLACKNESS Former Georgia State Senator, former Georgia State Representative, former NAACP chairman, member of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee, first president of the Souther Poverty Law Center and University of Virginia professor Julian Bond died this week. Gus' learned about Racism and the Civil Rights Movement in Bond's class for a semester. The New York Times took this moment to brand his great-grandmother, Jane Bond, a "slave mistress." The sizable number of White chics on the Jonathan Ferrell jury are likely flexing their power, as reports indicate a deadlock in deliberations in the manslaughter trial of Randall Kerrick. Ferguson, Missouri continues to invite protests and confrontation with law enforcement, while last summer's protesters are still facing possible convictions. And a decade later, the calamity of Hurricane Katrina and the levee breach continues... especially for black people. #AnswersForMiriamCarey INVEST in The COWS - http://tiny.cc/ledjb CALL IN NUMBER: 641.715.3640 CODE 564943# SKYPE: FREECONFERENCECALLHD.7676 CODE 564943# The C.O.W.S. archives: http://tiny.cc/76f6p
