I had, after all, purchased the subscription around the same time a year sooner, which allowed me to purchase the service at half price— a luxury which no doubt would end before my next payday, and after the payment for my Peloton—however— I thoroughly enjoyed keeping my energy well to myself, and it seemed I was recovering well from having been followed to the gym and harassed, however, now the annoyance was— my neighbor wouldn't leave me alone. She was high maintenance, full of drama, probably a little bit toxic— And now, she wanted to be friends. I thought it best to stay on her good side, and had politely declined the invitation to Christmas at her apartment with her mother, but knew that until one of us moved, I would have to safely navigate the trenches of neighborly rapport; though something told me to be careful with the valitile fragility of the entire thing, it seemed almost the same with anyone, even old friends, that trust itself was rare to have in others, and so my holiday wishes had been simple and humble in truth; it had snowed, and I was alone, and making music— the home gym set-up, complete with yoga mat, Peleton and pink treadmill were simply a bonus. —Tales of a Superstar DJ. They said the gig was till 3. You're off early. Or late. [DICK VAN DYKE turns to leave.] I can still hear you. sweet yellow pinapple and coconut curry over brown rice and lentils sounded like a good Christmas Eve In— “Wait? It is Christmas Eve, isn't it?” I checked the date and time as my phone connected to the wifi. “Yep.” I concurred, slurping the last of the curry broth from my dinner bowl— my second, but most likely out of three. I'd made enough to last however two or three days, and though I had been offline for throught most of now what seemed the entire month, letting my bills lapse over to make nonexistent room in the budget for the peloton, which seemed fair, considering how small I was getting, even cooking and eating myself into the non complacent waking coma that was the vivid and apt focus needed to create music for hours on end—something I had never quite done before in a certain way, and it seemed as though working in this fashion seemed somehow to have moved me solidly forward and sideways through time a bit—some sort of diagonal. I had rested the Sabbath and in the midst of it fallen behind by two days, but making up for it and catching up speed, I had submitted two releases in the early morning on the same day, now coming to an end—and somewhere in the middle, waking up after the fact to a fresh blanket of snow and the whimsy that came with it. A white Christmas afterall, perhaps, if it didn't melt by the following morning, which, judging by the fact that the coffee in the tumbler was still piping hot and not just like warm—I.e., fresh—that I might the same be up early into Christmas morning, also the first day of Hanukkah, and although I had forgone getting a menorah, after the attempt to pick up a free one I had found online over the summer in search of a cat, it didn't seem worth the cost to buy one; I was saving for too many things at once, which meant also nothing, but I couldn't be happier to spend the holidays alone and quietly— I couldn't be with the one person I wanted most, anyway, and so being alone was the next best thing. I almost wished I had've found the cat by now, but it was probably better that I was for the most part, unanchored, and could travel at will if needed. I thought to submit some of my new songs as demos to labels or into contests to try to find a job, but either way I knew in the moment that I would be playing live again by spring, even if it was just barmitsvahe and weddings, the latter of which I actually hoped to avoid, besides the Jewish ones—and my affinity for Jews had become remarkably trademark; as if I had some sort of reason to like them more over time, but I hadn't one—not that I actually knew of, anyway. I had forgotten why I had been checking my email incessantly anyway, besides the new sound packs that seemed to have been magically pouring in, which i became excited to use when the right time struck to dive back into aboleton, learning in broad lessons in how there was a grace period between finishing and submitting tracks and starting again, and being careful not to sink into monotony—until I finally remembered, checking my email—that I had been nervous about samples from one of the latest releases clearing—however—a miracle indeed, it had been approved, and the message sit atop a pile of nonsense in the rest of my email with the news that it had been delivered to stores— I had put out about 15 singles since the beginning of the month and had a week's time more in my subscription to the distribution service—and I planned not to waste any time before my account being terminated— not that eventually I wouldn't renew the subscription, however— it would be at least a few months and probably into the early spring. Parachute Women: Marianne Faithfull, Marsha Hunt, Bianca Jagger, Anita Pallenberg, and the Women Behind the Rolling StonesDiscover the true story of the four women who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to help shape and curate the image of The Rolling Stones—perfect for fans of Girls Like Us.The Rolling Stones have long been considered one of the greatest rock-and-roll bands of all time. At the forefront of the British Invasion and heading up the counterculture movement of the 1960s, the Stones' innovative music and iconic performances defined a generation, and fifty years later, they're still performing to sold-out stadiums around the globe. Yet, as the saying goes, behind every great man is a greater woman, and behind these larger-than-life rockstars were four incredible women whose stories have yet to be fully unpacked . . . until now.In Parachute Women, Elizabeth Winder introduces us to the four women who inspired, styled, wrote for, remixed, and ultimately helped create the legend of the Rolling Stones. Marianne Faithfull, Marsha Hunt, Bianca Jagger, and Anita Pallenberg put the glimmer in the Glimmer Twins and taught a group of strait-laced boys to be bad. They opened the doors to subterranean art and alternative lifestyles, turned them on to Russian literature, occult practices, and LSD. They connected them to cutting edge directors and writers, won them roles in art house films that renewed their appeal. They often acted as unpaid stylists, providing provocative looks from their personal wardrobes. They remixed tracks for chart-topping albums, and sometimes even wrote the actual songs. More hip to the times than the rockers themselves, they consciously (and unconsciously) kept the band current—and confident—with that mythic lasting power they still have today.Lush in detail and insight, and long overdue, Parachute Women is a group portrait of the four audacious women who transformed the Stones into international stars, but who were themselves marginalized by the male-dominated rock world of the late '60s and early '70s. Written in the tradition of Sheila Weller's Girls Like Us, it's a story of lust and rivalries, friendships and betrayals, hope and degradation, and the birth of rock and roll. Elizabeth Winder is the author of Marilyn in Manhattan: Her Year of Joy,and Pain, Parties, Work: Sylvia Plath in New York, Summer 1953. Her work has appeared in the Chicago Review, Antioch Review, American Letters, and other publications. She is a graduate of the College of William and Mary, and earned an MFA in creative writing from George Mason University.Buy the book from Wellington Square Bookshop - https://www.wellingtonsquarebooks.com/book/9781580059589

Keith Richards made Talk is Cheap in 1988 as a response to Mick Jagger's efforts as a solo artist and the sniping the two had engaged in via the press in the mid-80s.  But the Glimmer Twins made up, recorded Steel Wheels in 1989 and launched one of the biggest tours in rock history, reestablishing the Stones as a viable touring act. However, Keith didn't want to give up this fabulous band he'd created with Steve Jordan (now in the Stones), Charlie Drayton, Ivan Neville, Waddy Wachtel, Sarah Dash and Bobby Keys.  So while the Stones paused before Voodoo Lounge, Keith & the X-Pensive Wynos released Main Offender.  Wicked As It Seems was a bit of a hit on rock radio and inspired Mick to work with Keith to create Love Is Strong off Voodoo Lounge. It's a great album and the band did tour to support it.  We're reviewing the 30th anniversary edition which includes a live performance from England in 1993.  Truth be told this one has been on the shelf for a while as the 30th anniversary edition was released in March 2022 but we've been busy with interviews, live concert reviews and lots of fun stuff.  So ahead of its official anniversary on October 19, we offer our review of Main Offender 30th Anniversary Edition.Ugly American Werewolf in London WebsiteThe RockonteursTwitterInstagramYouTubeLInkTreewww.pantheonpodcasts.comWant to win front row seats to Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets in the US?Enter here to win tickets and a chance to be on a Pantheon Podcast: https://pantheonpodcasts.com/nickmasonWe'll be at the Indianapolis show Friday, October 14, Get tickets here: https://www.thesaucerfulofsecrets.com/

On episode 7 of Past Prime, Matty & Steve sit down in their bespoke suits for a cup of Earl Grey tea to discuss The Rolling Stones' 1994 "comeback" album, "Voodoo Lounge." Released after a string of tepid albums and more frequent and public spats between The Glimmer Twins, the band got into the studio with taskmaster Don Was and aimed to reclaim some of their greatness. The result was a bloated, if beloved, album that sounded like The Stones' politely imitating The Stones. Mothers and fathers were delighted by it familiarity. They shared it with their children. Together, half of the people on Earth went to see the gargantuan tour. MTV played the video with the band walking around New York City, taller than skyscrapers. If you were alive in 1994, you were very aware of "Voodoo Lounge." Matty suggests that "Voodoo Lounge" sounds like a well delivered press release from Rolling Stones Inc. Steve suggests it sounds like expensive plastic surgery. They both agree that the two songs that Keith sings -- "The Worst" and "Through and Through" -- are actually the best songs on the album. As lifelong Stones fans, they miss Billy Preston on piano. They miss when the guys would sing back up. But they don not miss "Dirty Work" or "Steel Wheels." It's easy for our hosts to conclude that "Voodoo Lounge" is a step forward after several steps back. But like man of us, they do wonder if Mick will ever lay off the dick jokes and lady car metaphors. To read more about The Rolling Stones' "Voodoo Lounge," check out the full essay at Past Prime.

Few would seriously debate that "It's Only Rock 'n Roll" is not one of the very best albums by the Rolling Stones, but it's still an interesting record to discuss for at least two reasons. One, it marked a turning point in the band, being the final album with Mick Taylor and the first produced by the Glimmer Twins. Also though...is a "mediocre" Stones album really mediocre? The Stones may have taken a step back on the recording front in the eyes of many with 1973's Goats Head Soup, but the band had never been stronger on the road, plowing through a legendary set of tours in both the United States and Europe that cemented their reputations as the biggest rock and roll band in the world. They resumed recording operations during this time, but with new producers --- themselves. Or, more precisely, Mick and Keith, restyled as "The Glimmer Twins", taking over the reins full-time from Jimmy Miller, who had largely bowed out during the previous album's sessions. The resulting album, released in 1974, still retains many of the hallmarks of the Rolling Stones that we'd come to know over the previous decade. But it was a different sort of album, a different sort of songwriting, a different sort of production. We delve into the individual tracks and discuss what works, what doesn't, and where we disagree (which is quite often, surprisingly!) on this latest edition of Cosmic America.

Los temas que reseñamos hoy son: ‘If You Can't Rock Me', 'Luxury', 'Dance Little Sister', 'Ain't Too Proud To Beg' y 'It's Only Rock'n'Roll (But I Like It)'.   Episode 010 of *The Upful Life Podcast* welcomes a very special guest in Jeffrey Dupuis, longtime music/concert photographer, and professional Addiction Counselor. A spirited convo with an old friend, inspirational human, & someone who is a treasure to several communities.     As the host of this show, I am proud to unveil an episode with a focus on Addiction/Recovery, including some honest and transparent reflections on my own struggle. In recent months I've felt called to find a greater purpose in helping people fight their way out of this darkness, to find their way home. I intend for *The Upful LIFE Podcast* to be a vehicle for these transmissions, and this episode is a prime example. Jeffrey Dupuis Interview Starts at 17 Mins I was visiting NOLA a couple months ago, and trekked 'Uptown, bebe' to Jeffrey's lovely shotgun crib, for an early evening long-form interview. We start in the Bayou, where Jeffrey takes us thru his personal path to the photo pit, everything from capturing legends at the holy Tipitina's Uptown, to shooting The Phish from VT, with a few local detours and humorous lagniappe along the way. We go back two decades to his online music media work with a pioneering Tom Speed at Honest Tune, as well as our years working with a fledgling JamBase in the early daze. Since we're in the Crescent City, we chop it up about jam-culture at Jazzfest, and Jeffrey unveils a few tales from the rail. He poignantly cautions of the realities of working with music media and the festival business in 2019, and why its important to "keep your day job. "     From there we pivot into the main reason I asked Jeffrey on to my show: his work in recovery, and how it is both relevant & important to our music culture- from the stage to the rage. Jeffrey reveals humbling personal reflections on his own journey in and out of addiction, and his amazing, rewarding life in recovery. We talk about sober jam collectives like Wharf Rats and the Phellowship, before he delves deep into his actual profession in New Orleans as a licensed addiction counselor. We share an honest and frightening conversation about the stark reality of Fentanyl. Jeffrey , a man many years sober & abstinent of any kind of substance, then bravely leads the way into an informative discussion in his area of expertise, the oft-controversial, progressive-in-nature, solutions-based, and urgently-needed Medication Assisted Treatment for opiate abuse and addiction. Jeffrey keeps it 100 and I'm certain this convo will have value to a plethora of people on all sides of this ever pertinent issue. Thank you Jeffrey for opening your heart, mind and spirit. You, sir, are a Real One. Jeffrey Dupuis : MARC (Medication Assisted Recovery Centers) in Metarie & Slidell. Click HERE Also on Episode 010, an appropriate ***Deep Bow*** in gratitude and appreciation to Dopey Podcast (4min mark) a show that serves as great inspiration to me, and a lifeline to thousands affected by this scourge of Addiction. A proverbial tip of the Kangol to Dave & Dopey Nation.  We lighten up a bit and finish this episode with another phone call to J.A., my brotha' from anotha'. He's our resident Glimmer Twins aficionado, & checks in on all things Stones at NOLA JazzFest. Not only my best bud since 5th Grade, but also a wealth of perspective on music culture, most specifically the Rolling Stones. J.A. will continue steadily sliding thru the pod every few weeks, because the streets demand it. My man is very popular guy!      *Vibe Junkie JAM of the Week* "Water" off Phrenology (2002), from The Roots    The Upful LIFE Podcast is available on iTunes! Paperback Rocker: Where Words and Music Collide

My website is www.PaperbackRocker.com. You can find the podcast archives there. Find my books of rock and roll fiction on Amazon by searching my name, Matt Syverson. Follow me on Twitter @PaperbackRocker. Email me at bowiefan1970@live.com. Thanks for listening! The show notes are as follows: I have released the Kindle version of "Blue Whiskey". I thought it was going to take all of my three day weekend to format, but I did it in one hour, and it looks great. I can't believe I remembered how. It's weird that in person I always sell "Black Dog", but online "Band On The Run" sells much more. My last two episodes on Stitcher had some weird distortion thing in the intros, which I did not cause. That reminds me of how excruciating it was trying to make my CD sound the same across all playing platforms, and I talk about that a little. I talk about recording my album and all the four track recording I did over the years. I had some troubles with my album's producer, who may or may not have had a severe cocaine addiction. I tell how The Cars chose their band name. I talk about some things I heard author Hugh Howey say some things I agree with on another podcast. I talk about the legend of Ozzy Osbourne pissing on the Alamo and whether that is true. I also discuss the world's most prominent scholar of the Alamo, who happens to be a classic rock superstar. I observe the anniversary of Bon Scott's death and do a poor imitation of his replacement, Brian Johnson, which hurts my throat. The anniversary of "Spinal Tap" happened, too, and I talk a little about that movie. One rocker thought it was like a horror movie because it was so real. Next, I talk about Michael McDonald of the Doobie Bros. co-writing "I'll Wait" with David Lee Roth! Ted Templeton got them together. I also talk about Slash's regrets about his image, along with the Glimmer Twins, the Toxic Twins, and Guns n Roses. I tell a story about a Slash show my buddy went to. Finally, I talk about how to enjoy podcasts even if you have a sketchy 3G or 4G connection. You can download your favorites on Stitcher using Wi-Fi and play them back without using a live connection. Thanks for listening, and I hope you enjoy the episode.
