Sam and I discuss going off the grid, we bring in Jon for a chat about the confusion over time travel.  I decided I'm starting a politcal group, "No Growth Knoxville" just to put a name to how people really feel, maybe i'll start a non-profit..lol. We again go down some 'posturing' about how the introduction of a voucher program will actually work...happy holidays to all you out there and celebrate what you celebrate.  Website, Facebook, Twitter (X)

During the meeting, Kerry Lutz and Aaron Clary discussed the benefits of getting off the societal support and validation grid by building your own home. They argued that this approach could provide economic opportunities and valuable skills, and could be a solution to the housing crisis. They also discussed the potential mental benefits of opting-out of society and rediscovering oneself, but acknowledged that not everyone will participate in this trend. Aaron suggested that young people should consider building their own homes instead of pursuing higher education, and mentioned the hurdles that come with this unconventional approach, such as the cost of land and the need for skills in carpentry and home repairs. Kerry shared a personal anecdote about fixing a toilet and encouraged listeners to take on household repairs themselves or find a handyman to save money. They also discussed the potential for creative financing, such as rent-to-own, and the availability of resources like YouTube for self-instruction. In the wrap-up of their interview, Kerry and Aaron discussed where to find Aaron's work and had a brief personal chat about South Dakota and Aaron's personal life. The tone was friendly and casual, with both speakers expressing pleasure in talking to each other. If you would have told me that I would take time off this past summer, I would have responded with a “hell no” to that. And, proceeded to claim that I needed to “get shit moving” or that I “couldn't possibly take time off” … or, some other version of “no, I can't.” Yet, when the universe says STOP, the universe means NOW. My level of burn-out had reached a pretty significant level. Again, I hadn't been back here since my corporate days, more than a decade ago. I was pushing again. Pushing. So. Hard. Grinding, winding, burning, churning, making “shit happen.” You know, the good ‘ole GSD mentality. My old friend. Though, if I am being honest with myself, it was never much of a friend to me. It stole from me, it taunted me, it convinced me I wasn't worthy unless I proved myself. It laughed at me, it drove me to the brink of exhaustion, to the black abyss of hell and back many times. It cost me. A lot. In fact, this “friend” of mine was pure evil, pure darkness, pure bullshit. This belief, this story, we buy into that we have to hustle. We have to work hard … you know, the “no pain, no gain” type of bullshit we feed ourselves over and over and over again. I realized I needed to part ways with this old friend of mine. I needed to find a new friend, in myself. In my truth. And, it required me to get still to see it: I have lived most of my life trying to prove myself, to validate myself. For what? For who? Listen to this episode where I discuss what going off-the-grid gifted me, as well as why I believe "quitting" is one of the most important things we can do. Connect with Candy! Where they are helping residential customers get off the grid, they do this through a model where they effectively just switch out some equipment, and then you pay around the same price as your electricity bill. The difference is, that you'll no longer be reliant on the grid and will have guaranteed electricity. What they are doing is really cool, I feel it has a strong appeal to many people given the power outage issues across our country. The Main talking points of today's discussion are:IntroGetting into Energy SpaceStarting in the RecessionGoing off the GridResale ValueFinancingSolar ResourcesRegulationsUtilities & Incentive ProgramsSelling Back to the GridGrid Dilemmas: a Hodge-PodgeFuture of the GridInstall and OperationsWhat New Builders ThinkMultifamily ApplicationsRegulatory Stifling Clean SlateCyber SecurityEducating the People en masse TalentWrap UpWe hope you enjoy today's episode - please reach out with any specific questions or discussion points. Or even the people wearing real designer but still living beyond they means. Why do people want Gucci, Versace, Balenciaga etc. More than they want homes, titles and LLC's. Is this music related or the lifestyle where impressing people is the important thing to do?? Then we dive into could you live off of the grid. If they snatched technology as we know it from us and we had to resort back to the beginning stages of Technology would you be able to survive without apps such as Snapchat, Cashapp, Amazon and more?????? Also a question to the listener how do we change these narratives????

Brad Feld is the author of eight best-selling books on venture capital investing and entrepreneurship, has been an early-stage investor for more than 30 years, and is pretty much a global legend when it comes to startup communities and entrepreneurial ecosystems, and what makes their flywheels spin. Currently Managing Director at Foundry Group a US-based venture capital firm that invests in early-stage technology companies, Brad also co-founded Techstars, and has been a major force in the global startup ecosystem, backing thousands of founders on their startup journeys to date. But truth be told, the world of venture investment can get a bit of a bad wrap sometimes. Competitive, fast-paced, low on diversity and high on testosterone, it is often regarded as the arena of Alphas. So in this conversation with Brad, Human Cogs Cohost Madeleine Grummet gets under the hood of Brad's real life as a VC, to uncover his personal drivers, trigger points and life learnings, and discover that the human underneath is incredibly thoughtful, deeply reflective, remarkably wise - and a great storyteller. As you’ll learn in this episode, Brad shares how it has taken him a while to find his place, and that as a reformed workaholic, he now regularly goes off the grid to hit the trails around his hometown of Boulder in Colorado to run miles and miles solo. With his 'engineers brain', he's also committed to continuous improvement, and the kind of person who’s more interested in moving towards not away from problems. To that end, he and his wife Amy schedule monthly mandated ‘life dinners' - kind of retros on their relationship - in order to keep it alive and thriving. So whether you’re a founder, funder, searcher or finder, Brad’s unique perspective, wisdom and worldview are well worth sitting in for a while. Why? Because we are all works in progress, and we each have so much to learn from simply hearing each others’ stories. Do you ever crave to just "get away from it all"—for good? Well, Johanna and her family have done just that, and have found that living off the grid offers both nervous system peace AND little distraction from all the feels that we sensitive souls have access to. Listen in on this fascinating and fun conversation about disconnection from materialism, consumerism, and so many other "isms," all in the name of a brave, authentic, and simplified—but far from easy—lifestyle. Johanna is an ecofeminist writer and collage artist. She is the author of fabulist novella Mama & the Hungry Hole (Wordcraft of Oregon, 2015) and the poetry chapbook, Gestation (Finishing Line Press, 2020). Her surrealist collages appear on the most recent covers of Stonecoast Review and Taos International Journal of Poetry and Art. Originally from New York, she creates from her off-grid strawbale home in northern New Mexico where she is spellbound by the energy vortex of Taos Mountain. Switching off from the world, especially online, is one of the best things you can do for yourself. I have developed three subconscious tools (drawing, movement and words) to help you calm your being and express what is hidden deep inside of you. I also discuss the way our brain functions following a traumatic event or trigger and how brain waves work out of my research in order to understand the techniques. A free downloadable kit is available with personal examples and step-by-step instructions to utilise for yourself when you decide to take time off the grid. The stress of the job, the bureaucracy of the government and the physical toll it was all taking on his body forced him to simply walk from his only career that he had ever known to save his own life and go off the grid. "They created the 40 hour work week because they realized that's about as much as they can get out of you before you snap." In the conversation we cover government corruption, pharmaceutical drug addiction, cashing out his retirement, and his pursuit of living a simpler and happier life. We also discuss his latest book Going Off The Grid which is his personal account of buying a small plot of land in the state of Washington and building a self-sustaining house that is in fact, off the grid. In this episode we cover... What its like being a career military guy and the pressure that he was under to perform. The tipping point in his health that forced him to make a drastic lifestyle change before it was too late. Cashing out his retirement to pay for surgeries on his back. What it really means to 'go off the grid'. What most people don't know when they want to live a simpler life in rural America.
