In this episode of the Journey of My Mother's Son podcast, I talk with, Jon Sexton. This is the first interview that I've recorded with a guest that wasn't Sandy or Alex since late May of this year. I have to tell you – Alaska and Canada were incredible, but it sure is good to be back sharing the stories of the many little people in many little places that are doing all of those many little things that make the whole world change! Jon and I talk about his entrepreneurial journey. It started on the tennis and basketball courts and other athletic venues of Visalia, California and has now landed him as the host of the TV show, Selling Nashville. Jon's journey, like so many other entrepreneurs took a few twists and turns along the way. He originally relocated to Nashville to pursue a career in music. In order to not fall into the “starving artist” category, he used some of the leadership skills and life lessons that he learned from sports to get into the health club and gym industry. What initially started as a way to simply help make ends meet while he pursued his music career, eventually turned into another passion and eventually ownership of his own health club and gym business. While running his business, he started investing in real estate, which eventually led to him securing his real estate license and heading up his own team of agents. Now, in the realm of Greater Nashville's real estate market, Jon stands as a distinguished figure, acclaimed for his exemplary achievements and unwavering commitment to excellence. As mentioned previously, Jon is the host for the television show, Selling Nashville, which can be seen on HGTV, Apple TV, Travel Channel and more. Renowned as an award-winning Realtor, Jon has garnered accolades such as the title of "Best Real Estate Agent" in Williamson County and the distinction of being named a "Top Real Estate Agent" by both the Nashville Scene and his team, NASHVILLE HOME, which shares the recognition of "Best Real Estate Team" in Williamson County. With an impressive national ranking of #55 and a prominent position as #1 in Tennessee, Jon holds the coveted title of Top Agent in Davidson County, Nashville Metro, and Williamson County, underscored by his steadfast dedication to ensuring customer satisfaction. Elevating his status further, Jon is an exclusive member of REALM, a prestigious global organization comprised solely of the top 1% of luxury agents worldwide, a testament to his unparalleled expertise and distinguished service. Endorsed by financial guru Dave Ramsey as a Trusted Local Provider, Jon's reputation for integrity and excellence is further solidified. In Jon's own words, "It is an honor to be one of the select few Realtors trusted by Dave Ramsey and Ramsey Solutions. I am excited to continue to guide and serve those in need in being assisted and educated in the home buying and selling process." Beyond his remarkable achievements in real estate, Jon has also established himself as one of Nashville's foremost entrepreneurs over the past decade. Recognized as a standout figure in the entrepreneurial landscape, Jon was bestowed with the title of "Top 50 Entrepreneurs in Tennessee" by Business Leader's magazine and was identified as one of the "Top 10 Entrepreneurs to Look Out For" by Disruptors Magazine. Jon's attitude revolves around the belief that success is not merely measured by accomplishments but by the satisfaction and results of his clients. He attributes his greatest strength to having "the heart of a teacher" and a genuine concern for the well-being of those he serves, ensuring that their needs and desires are met with utmost dedication and care. To find out more about Jon, check out his website at https://www.nashvillehomeagents.com/agents/jon-sexton/.

We've all been there. Awkwardly standing around at an event trying to decide who to talk to first and what the heck to discuss. The weather? The latest sports story? Travis and Taylor? But (hopefully), we finally break the ice, get to know some new contacts, and feel like we really rocked this networking thing! What happens next? Maybe we connect on LinkedIn and send a short, “It was great to meet you,” but usually not much else. You see, networking is more than just the part where you find people to grow your network, it is more about the truly hard part - maintaining it. Today's guest is here to help! Shannen Stewart is the Founder of Heels & Handshakes, an organization that fosters community through in-person events and digital experiences for entrepreneurs, women in business and their allies. Key Takeaways Learn about the missing piece in business that led Shannen to create Heels & Handshakes. She explains, “networking is not checking a box, it is checking a pulse” - what you need to know once you make a professional connection and how to maintain that relationship. Shannen's go-to CRM to utilize for following up with your contacts by providing value, not noise. The best tactics to optimize your time at an event. Links & Mentioned Resources COVVE: Shannen's go to CRM app for taking notes on, and setting reminders to check in with her network. About Shannen Stewart Shannen created Heels & Handshakes in 2013 after returning to her hometown of Nashville and missing the community of women within the hospitality industry. She noticed the lack of opportunities to network. Shannen wanted to ensure that the women who made up the Greater Nashville workforce would all have positive and collaborative interactions to enrich their lives professionally and personally. What started as a ten- person meeting for cocktails and conversations has evolved to over 3,000 women and men in the Middle Tennessee community. Since founding the organization, she has curated over 240 events for the Heels & Handshakes members. Shannen's event brand partnerships and collaborations include Kendra Scott, TEDx, Ballet Ball, Tiff's Treats, and the Nashville Young Leaders Council to execute thoughtful activations for the Heels & Handshakes community. Her work in hospitality has received accolades and awards, including the 2021 Nashville Lifestyles Women in Business Recipient, The 2019 Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce NELA Awards Hospitality & Tourism Recipient, the 2019 Meeting Professionals International Tennessee Chapter Supplier of the Year and the 100 Leading Persons in Personal Services, Food and Hospitality in 2018. After his military service, Jon Snider experienced a “less-than-ideal” transition into the civilian workforce. It would be this experience that would later motivate him to support transitioning service members in the Greater Nashville community and go on to apply and be selected to be the inaugural chapter chair of the HCA Healthcare Nashville-Corporate Veterans Colleague Network. As the new program manager of military affairs for HCA Healthcare, Jon aspires to honor the legacy that Avery King left for the organization by elevating the programming to strengthen workforce pipelines through the veteran and transitioning service member communities, increase collaboration with community partners that align with the vision of the military affairs program, and advance the professional development of internal veteran and military spouse colleagues in order to enhance the support of the HCA Healthcare mission. Jon holds many military and civilian honors to include a master's of science in healthcare quality and safety from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, 2021 graduate from the American Medical Association's Health Systems Science Scholars Program, 2020 graduate from the HCA Healthcare Leadership Institute Academy, and a bachelor's of science in community and public health from Middle Tennessee State University. Outside of work, Jon enjoys spending time with his wife and two children (ages 4 & 1), by exploring hiking trails of middle Tennessee, attending sporting events like Nashville Sounds and Nashville Predators, and enjoying live music experiences that Nashville has to offer.Support the show

Welcome to the Next Gen Nonprofit Leadership With Tommy Thomas podcast. Our guest today is Danny Herron. Danny is the President and CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Nashville, where he has served with distinction since 2010. When you talk with Danny, the conversation could go in a lot of directions. We could talk about his early years coming out of the University of Alabama with a degree in Civil Engineering. We could explore his career in banking where he served as the President and CEO of Cumberland Bank and then Regional President of Green Bank. We could even talk about his 2020 selection by the Nashville Business Journal as one of Nashville's most admired CEOs. And we may touch on some of those areas today, but our primary focus will be on what he has learned about nonprofit leadership over the past 12 years. Thanks again for joining us today. If you're listening to an app that lets you leave a review, please do so. A lot of our listeners come to us on the recommendation of a friend or a colleague. If you've heard something today that's worth passing on, please share the show with others. Enjoy! Time Stamps [2:07] – We're introduced to our guest, Danny Herron. [9:15] – Danny reveals the lessons he learned from his father and how striving for win/win relationships was how it had to be. [10:55] – These are some of the risks Danny has taken over his career. [13:02] – Do nonprofit boards talk enough about risk? Danny gives us his insight. [15:34] – The pitfalls of a board member “falling in love with the CEO.” [17:15] – Danny believes it's ok for a board member to challenge the CEO. Here's why. [18:45] – Danny compares and contrasts for-profit and nonprofit boards. [21:11] – We hear Danny discuss his thoughts on for-profit boards in more detail. [23:29] – What kind of self-evaluation process does Danny's board do? [24:58] – These are the types of questions Danny's board asks itself today. [27:29] – Tommy wraps up the conversation. On October 6th, the United Way of Greater Nashville hosted a timely and compelling discussion on “Healthcare Disparities in Our Own Backyard.” The panel was made possible by the United Way's de Tocqueville Society, a now-global society that was founded in 1981 by my brother Dr. Tommy Frist, Jr., to deepen relationships between the United Way and community leaders. We're sharing this discussion with you as a close look at the health and healthcare disparities in one southern city, my hometown of Nashville, Tennessee, as well as examine how our leading healthcare providers are working to specifically address these shortfalls. In the discussion, we highlight some of the concerning statistics uncovered in a recent community health and well-being survey, which you can find at: www.nashvillehealth.org/survey Now let me turn to our panel, where I'm joined by: James Hildreth, President & CEO of Meharry Medical College, and a member of the Biden-Harris COVID-19 Health Equity Task Force; Consuelo Wilkins, Senior Vice President & Senior Associate Dean for Health Equity and Inclusive Excellence at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center; Tama Van Decar, Chief Medical Officer of HCA Healthcare – TriStar Division; who prior to joining the private sector had a highly decorated 20-year military career, and Mary Kate Mouser, Director of Community Health and Benefits at Ascension Saint Thomas, where she works to establish strategies to improve the health of communities.
Host Jeremy C. Park talks with Adam Wilczek, Director of Endowment and Donor Engagement with United Way of Greater Nashville, who shares how and why he got involved as a volunteer with the United Way years ago and how his volunteerism led him to become a Board Member, Chairman of the Board, campaign chairman, and now a full-time member of the team. The United Way of Greater Nashville serves to unite the community and mobilize resources so that every child, individual and family thrives. During the interview, Adam talks about some of their key programs, the importance of raising money for nonprofits, the power of volunteerism, their Freewill services, opportunities to get involved and much more.About AdamServed in the US Army - While in the Army spent 3 years in Anchorage Alaska and traveled to many areas in that state. Also spent 2 years in the Washington DC area. After leaving the military, spent 40 years in the medical professional liability industry, working to help physicians avoid being sued by improving patient relations skills.Worked with national medical organizations such as the American Medical Association, the American Hospital Association, and a number of national specialty societies, such as the Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation and the Council of Medical Specialty Societies.Lectured to many physician groups in the US, Canada and Europe.Business focus created many interesting opportunities, like getting to meet with high profile personnel, such as Ronald Regan, Colin Powell, and Oracle CEO Larry Ellison.Served in senior positions (Sr. VP. COO, etc.) in companies employing me.Have been involved with the United Way since 1996:Served in many leadership positions, such as Board Member, Chairman of the Board and campaign chairman.Since 2018 has been involved in building a planned giving program.Until late 2019, worked with Williamson County UW. Now employed by the United Way of Greater Nashville, as the two UW's merged and the combined organization is now known as the United Way of Metropolitan Nashville. Our organization – what we do and why we are important:Our mission – We unite the community and mobilize resources so that every child, individual and family thrives. Our vision – We envision a community where every person has an equal chance at a bright future. Our history - we will celebrate our 100th anniversary in 2022.Two main functions:Raise money to help fund nonprofits.Support volunteer activitiesBy the numbers……in 2020 we:Brought together 34,000 donorsFrom 309 workplaces in 5 countiesRaising more than $16 Million is workplace giving, plus$5.1 Million raised for the Covid Response fund and $11 Million in grants and other fundingSupported 200 partner agencies. We raise money from a variety of sources, and support many nonprofits:Most of our donors are employees of companies with which we have a relationship:Companies run a “campaign” – an organized approach to solicit donations. Many companies' campaigns have creative approaches, to get employees involved. For example, one company I worked with had a “Halloween” themed campaign, where employees dressed in costumes during the campaign. I ended up dressed as Ace Freely of KISS.Some donors are high net worth individuals who can make substantial contributions. For example, during a meeting on contributions one high net worth donor wrote a check for $1 Million, placed it on the table and challenged others to do likewise. As another example, donors with highly appreciated stock can realize substantial benefit by donating the stock, thereby avoiding capital gains taxes.Of note, the Tocqueville Society was founded here in Nashville by Dr. Thomas F. Frist, Jr.Composed of donors who contribute over $10,000 in annually to the United Way.We have over 460 members in the UW Greater Nashville family. There are now 23,000 Tocqueville members worldwide. Many of our companies provide staff to support volunteer activities. These companies allow employees to volunteer on a variety of community improvement projects while still earning their salaries.Equally important is the fact we coordinate a number of services, such as:VITA – tax preparation for limited income taxpayers.211 – referral of persons in need to the proper agency.Days of action – volunteer opportunities that highlight our work in the community, such as:Stuff the bus – collecting school supplies so that students in our communities have the supplies they need to be ready to learn.Give Thanks – collecting supplies and assembling “Give Thanks” boxes filled with food and gift cards that feed a family for the traditional Thanksgiving period. The Heart-to-Heart Luncheon – a luncheon which enables individual fundraising.FreeWill services – facilitating the preparation of a last will and testament.Over 80% of people questioned in a recent survey said having a will was an important part of their personal financial plan, but less than 30% said they had one.Reasons given was cost (lawyer's fees, etc.) and time.UW Worldwide has an agreement with a company, FreeWill, which provides software that facilitates creation of a legally valid will within about 30 minutes, and at no cost to the donor. The same company's software also aids with other types of donations, such as contribution of highly appreciated stock and IRA rollovers.Learn more:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/UWNashvilleLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/uwnashville/Twitter: https://twitter.com/UWNashvilleWebsite: www.unitedwaygreaternashville.org

Host Jeremy C. Park talks with Lori Shinton, President and CEO of Hands on Nashville and Chair of Nashville VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster), who highlights the structure that provides a mechanism for representatives of voluntary agencies and organizations that have a role, purpose or function in disaster response and recovery to network and share information. VOAD is dedicated to whole community engagement and recognizes that all sectors of society must work together to foster more resilient communities. During the interview, Lori talks about the focus and goals for Nashville VOAD, the VOAD Emergency Management Cycle, the organizations involved, lessons learned, how the community can help, and much more. What is VOAD?Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster or “VOAD” is a structure that provides a mechanism for representatives of voluntary agencies and organizations that have a role, purpose or function in disaster response and recovery to network and share information.VOAD is dedicated to whole community engagement and recognize that all sectors of society must work together to foster more resilient communities. What is the Nashville VOAD Emergency Management Cycle?Mitigation - Minimizing the effects of disastersPreparedness - Planning how to respondResponse – Protecting the public and meeting survivors' immediate needsRecovery - Returning the community to normalWhat are some of the goals of the Nashville VOAD?Increase capacity to provide more efficient services to survivors of disasters;Better response to disasters through cooperation, communication, coordination, and collaboration;Networking and sharing best practices with individuals and organizations active in disaster response;Reduce or eliminate the adverse effect of natural, technological, and human-caused hazards on our socio-economic and physical environments through preparedness, mitigation, and education. Why is the Nashville VOAD beneficial to our communities? Because it:Builds relationships and trust between organizations and community partners;Brings diverse groups together around an issue to create solutions;Increases community resiliency through collaborative preparedness and training efforts;Creates a responsive structure that can be deployed immediately upon disaster;Increases coordination among partnering organizations which leads to a reduction in duplication of services;Provides points of contact for emergency managers and allows for a smooth information flow in a disaster; Can support the development of long-term recovery by supporting Long-Term Recovery Groups and their activities; It's an educational resource to residents of a community. How many organizations are involved in the Nashville VOAD?There are currently 51 member organizations who have committed to being a member of the Nashville VOAD.Many organizations have taken on more active roles in ensuring the procedures are in place and there are plans to tap into neighborhoods and/or the community as a whole depending on the level of disaster.Other organizations will take more active roles when training and also provide hands on service at the time of a disaster. We are currently made up of nonprofits, community organizations, and faith-based institutions.Representatives from several city-affiliated groups are also involved in preparation and response to disasters. What is the relationship between the city and VOAD when it comes to disaster response? The relationship between the Nashville VOAD and Metro Nashville Office of Emergency Management (OEM) is a critical component to a successful VOAD.Metro Nashville OEM expertise in disaster preparedness, mitigation, response, and recovery is an important resource.OEM will provide disaster training and education to all VOAD members and is committed to collaborating with the Nashville VOAD to ensure a coordinated response between the city and the VOAD members. In addition to the Nashville VOAD's relationship with OEM, several other disaster preparedness and response partners will help to provide training to our members.Nashville VOAD's current structure has unfolded over the course of the past 18 months due to disasters in NashvilleTornado – March 3, 2020The reconvening of the Nashville VOAD was in its earliest stages when the tornado hit March of 2020Conversations were happening around how to recognize the 10th anniversary of the May 2010 floods, and several of us thought the re-establishing the work of the Nashville VOAD was the most impactful way to do so.Since no formal group was in place, organizations followed Nashville's Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan as a blueprint to responding to those in need.Shortly after, the Davidson Co. Long-Term Recovery Group was formed to ensure tornado survivors could receive the help they needed.Christmas Day Bombing, 2020With tornado recovery well on its way, the Nashville VOAD steering committee had been put in place to determine best foot forward in the shape of the Nashville VOAD and the organizations willing to be at the table.Because of the steering committee and active Long-Term Recovery Group, the city and soon-to-be functioning VOAD were able to respond alongside each other, with additional help at the federal level due to the nature of the disaster.Within several weeks, the Christmas Day Bombing Long-Term Recovery Group was stood up to assist residents, employees, and businesses affected by the bomb.Flood & Severe Storms - March 2021By the time the Spring floods and severe storms hit our community in late March and early April, the Nashville VOAD had 51 organizations signed up and actively meeting.Due to the prior two disasters, we were aware of which organizations could step into the roles needed, as well as which organizations had the capacity to take on the extra workloadThis disaster also put into light the need to connect with our neighbors who did not speak English as their primary language, and we worked to put together a volunteer task force to help guide us on best practices for outreach and effective connections.TodayAll three Long-Term Recovery Groups that have been established out of the work of the Nashville VOAD and actively work with community members on becoming whole again. While each group is seated at a different point in the timeline of recovery, we continue to learn and grow from active response while we build stronger relationships with each other as a collaborative group.Who is leading the efforts of the Nashville VOAD?From the work of Tornado recovery and the roles laid out in the CEMP, the following organizations have been actively planning and executing this new chapter of the Nashville VOAD.Gifts of Money – Amy Fair of The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee is the current Nashville VOAD secretary / treasurer. Not only does CFMT stand up charitable funds for donors to make gifts to in response to disasters, it also allows the Nashville VOAD to fundraise to help absorb the cost of preparing for the next disasterGifts of Stuff – Tina Doniger of the Community Resource Center is active as the Vice Chair of Nashville VOAD, as she comes with the knowledge of soliciting the items survivors need in both the immediate and long-term recovery from disasterGifts of Time – Lori Shinton of Hands On Nashville currently leads the efforts as the Chair of the Nashville VOAD, as her organization not only stands up organization and execution of volunteer needs, but also has a team that can provide expertise in the many facets of disaster response.Additional brain trusts come from Red Cross of Tennessee, Neighbor to Neighbor, United Way of Greater Nashville, Family & Children Service, United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), Westminster Home Connection, Salvation Army – Nashville Area Command, Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and more.Together, we're building stronger communities through service. By Richard Hunt After Robert Sherill’s mother and stepdad got a divorce, Robert found himself living in what was known locally as the “Dodge City” public housing project in Nashville. The nickname pretty much says it all, a real rough neighborhood. In time, Robert pursued money – he sold drugs. But that caught up with him and he did 5 years in prison. On the other side of confinement, Robert is a changed man, an entrepreneur, a man of faith, and dedicated to helping teens and those being released from prison to pick the right path to life and success.

Before COVID mental health issues were a whisper in the background. With the rise in suicide, drug overdoses, anxiety and depression, mental health has moved to the forefront of national dialogue. NAMI has moved there with it. The National organization and its affiliates all over the country have stepped up offerings of their free mental health programs. NAMI Davidson immediately took its services online, increasing the number of groups offered, and providing online education. The agency has participated in local, state, and national discussions on response to elevated levels of anxiety and depression and developing best practices in telehealth. It has also provided online education and support to psychiatric residents at Meharry, Chambers of Commerce for Donelson/Hermitage and Wilson County, and the new employees of the Davidson County Sheriff's department.NAMI Davidson is a small organization with a big footprint. The agency is staffed by a full-time Executive Director, and 3 part-time employees. They are supported by dedicated lead volunteers and board members who assisted the agency in documenting contact with over 9,000 people at the close of the fiscal year last June. The organization provides, support, education, advocacy and awareness on the impact of mental health issues for people throughout Greater Nashville. From a place of their own lived experience, NAMI Davidson's staff and volunteers light the way down a dark path to shine a light on mental wellness.NAMI Davidson County is an independently funded and operated affiliate of NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness. Chapters are operating in all fifty states. Signature programs are evidence-based, led by trained peers, and most are free. The agency receives 40% of it's funding through a grant from the Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services. It's annual NAMIWalks Greater Nashville, other fundraisers, small grants, and private contributions provide 55%. Support from NAMI Tennessee and NAMI national contribute to 5% of the total operating budget. Most recently worked with Verizon throughout the US on their Calling for Kindness Campaign which we co-developed. In this episode of The Life of Pharoah Po, Po is joined by his childhood friend Curtis of Payne Technology. Payne Technology taking Nashville by storm, one information technology solution at a time Business is about more than making money. It’s about serving the community and each other. “Business is our way to serve the world the very gifts that make us who we are,” says Curtis Payne II, founder and CEO of Payne Technology, a full-service Computer & Mobile device repair and IT Solutions consulting firm. “This is a combination of our upbringing, interests, and struggles. We all conduct business in one way or another every day. As business owners, we constantly shift from buyer to seller. You can't expect people to support your business without supporting other businesses.” Payne, the son of a retired Air Force veteran and career woman, calls Columbus, MS his native home, but has called Antioch and the Greater Nashville area home since 2006. His advice on business: Enjoy the ride. “Entrepreneurship is like a roller coaster that never ends. The thrill of the highs and lows are not for everyone,” he says. “I enjoy entrepreneurship because I'm willing to take risks that require me putting in maximum effort and then some. Because of my strong faith in God & the values my parents instilled in me, I'm willing to sacrifice the ultimate to stay on the this roller coaster.” Aside from his innate desire to work for himself, Payne is also driven by a need to have an unlimited opportunity to earn as much as he is willing to work for. “No employer can pay a great employee their true worth,” he says. “I believe in receiving the full value in everything I'm fortunate to be a part of. Entrepreneurship allows me to receive the full value of my gifts.” Payne also supports many other business owners’ endeavors, both large and small. "There's enough light in the world for everyone to shine,” he says. And for your IT needs, he says simply this: “Technology failures are unavoidable. Prevent pain in the future by contacting Payne Technology today." https://curtis384.wixsite.com/mysite-3 --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Super excited to share this follow up episode with Brady Silverwood. Since we left Brady on the outskirts of the Greater Nashville area Brady managed to complete his mission of running across the United States of America. This is something that has been completed by fewer people than have successfully climbed Mt. Everest. It was really amazing to be able to follow along and see first hand just how he was able to complete this amazing endeavor. The "why" behind him deciding to take this on is even more in line with everything we are about with Spread The Positive. Brady was able to raise awareness and sizeable monetary contributions to 12 incredibly notable causes/non-profits. His story from not being a runner to being involved with the Grand AC run club that has transformed his life forever and eventually running over 3,000 miles is one of the most inspiring stories we have come across. It was really great to hear Brady speak first hand about the bigger picture mission behind why he took on this endeavor and ways he was able to overcome incredibly difficult obstacles and adversity to accomplish this incredible feat! Be sure to check the video version of this podcast on our YouTube channel and the full story on www.spreadthepositive.net. Big thanks to Brady for being on, all he has done with this amazing mission and for all, he is doing to Spread The Positive!

Hey Chris, welcome to the podcast. Chris Laye 0:40 Thanks, John. Thanks for having me. Man. I’m excited to be here and excited to talk about the all-new Ranger and the new products we have coming out. John Haggard 0:47 Good. I think a lot of folks always want to know about the future. We know about the past but hey, what is coming up? So before we dive into the world of Ford, and get an idea as to what is upcoming, tell us how did you get started in the automotive business. There were a lot of professions you could have gone into, why automotive? How did you get there? Chris Laye 1:05 Yeah, absolutely. So if you spend enough time around Ford employees, you’ll probably hear the phrase, “my blood runs blue”. John Haggard 1:12 Yeah. Chris Laye 1:13 And that’s certainly the case for me. So my grandfather’s on both sides of my family worked for Ford Motor Company, as well as my father. So actually, I held the same position that I do now. So kind of following in their footsteps. But when I was growing up, I started out working at a local dealership, washing cars in the summers and high school and helping out with events. From there, I went to college where I had an internship with the marketing sales and service team out of Atlanta. And at the end of my internship, I was fortunate enough to receive a full-time offer, which I accepted and that’s how I got my start in the automotive business. So kind of always been in my blood and Ford has it as well. John Haggard 1:53 Yeah, it was very interesting. Your story parallels that of Jim Galvin, dealer principal from Miracle ord. Because I said hey, how did you get started? He said, Well I, you know, went to work for my dad I started washing cars to get gas money so I could go to school and all this type of thing. So I guess it really does sometimes run in the family. Did you do anything before automotive, like, you know, maybe you were working in a restaurant when you first got your driver’s license or anything like that. Chris Laye 2:18 To go back to Mr. Galvin. Jim Galvin’s father, Jim Galvin SR., actually worked with my grandfather in Ford. So yeah, small world. So I was excited to be covering that story as well. So the only other job actually had that wasn’t automotive-related was I worked at an animal shelter and I think my freshman year of high school, which I really enjoyed giving back to the community and helping those dogs find a home. John Haggard 2:47 So where are you originally from? Chris Laye 2:50 I’m originally from Swanee, Georgia, which is about 30 miles north of Atlanta. John Haggard 2:54 Okay, about 30 miles north. And you’ve lived in… where are you living now, by the way? Chris Laye 3:00 So I currently live in Memphis, which is where our regional headquarters is. To kinda give you a little bit of background of what we are what areas we cover. So our regions actually made up of five different zones. We cover the state of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and then parts of Kentucky and Tennessee. So Memphis is our central location. John Haggard 3:21 And you travel all of those. Is that right? Chris Laye 3:24 I only cover Nashville. And we have there’s four other sales managers, and each one of those managers covers one of those states. John Haggard 3:32 All right, so when you’re not doing Ford 24/7, Chris, what are your passions outside of work? What do you like to do? Chris Laye 3:39 I think my biggest passion is probably traveling. I enjoy going to new places, meeting new people and seeing things from a different perspective. Sometimes it’s easy to get caught up in the day to day work of our lives. So traveling is a good way for me to slow things down and enjoy living in the moment and invest in other people. John Haggard 3:56 Any favorite cities or destinations that you have been to that maybe someone has not been to that you would recommend? Chris Laye 4:04 My favorite places I have probably been… Santorini in Greece. It’s a gorgeous gorgeous island. Then the beautiful scenery. So if you know if you get the chance head out to Santorini in Greece. John Haggard 4:16 Alright, so let’s fantasize for a moment. If you could have one superpower, what would it be? Chris Laye 4:22 Oh, that’s a tough one. I’m gonna go with the first one I thought of, and it’s got to be flying. John Haggard 4:26 Okay. So if you could just sort of like jump off the ground and fly? Chris Laye 4:29 Fly. I mean, that would take care of my passion for travel and not a bad superpower to have. John Haggard 4:35 Kind of like Superman? Chris Laye 4:36 Right! John Haggard 4:37 Yeah. You wouldn’t have to stand in any long lines at the airport to go anywhere. You could just jump off the ground and go. That would be kind of fun. Chris Laye 4:44 Right! Yeah, take care of the Atlanta Atlanta airport issue we have going on over here. John Haggard 4:49 You know, I think a lot of people Chris would love to have your job, especially in the world of Ford and on automotive. It’s a fast-moving, fun, exciting industry, always something new to report. What is it about that job that just makes you want to get up every morning and go to work? Chris Laye 5:05 What you’ll hear from myself and probably a lot of people that have been in the business for many years is that no day is the same. And so I enjoy waking up every morning and not really knowing what’s going to happen because it’s going to be a different day. It’s certain incentives that are coming out. There’s customers coming in, new vehicles are being released. And you know, the relationships that you build with your co-workers and the dealer body are absolutely incredible. So you never know what’s going to happen. And I think that’s what makes it so exciting to wake up in the morning and give this job 110% effort. John Haggard 5:39 So tell us about your role specifically, what is it exactly? Chris Laye 5:44 So I think one of the most exciting parts about my job and you know, probably the most valuable asset that we have is Ford Motor Company is our dealer network. So I get the opportunity to work with 13 of the Ford stores each day. Most of them are in the Greater Nashville area but go all the way to Jackson, Tennessee up to Paducah, Kentucky. So a lot of territory to cover, but I get to work with their stores every day. My job is basically to be the liaison between Ford Motor Company and the dealer body that I cover. So I provide business operations consulting, consumer experience support, as well as sales forecasting and metrics to show growth opportunities. But one of the most important pieces of my role is wholesale vehicles. So two weeks out of each month, I go to each store so I’ll start to my stores and we build a sales forecast together to decide how many vehicles they need to purchase from Ford. And this process is extremely important because a dealership needs to have the right quantity and mix of vehicles to better serve the market that they’re in. So I always tell my friends that we know when you drive by a Ford dealership, you’ll see all the new line of Rangers, F150s, Explorers. And those vehicles go through me, so a dealership will earn their wholesale through a Sales Zone Manager. John Haggard 7:09 All right. And as you look at Gallatin, Tennessee for Miracle Ford, just the market as a whole, what do you see there? Chris Laye 7:16 I think the Gallatin market is one of the top 10 fastest growing cities in America. So there’s a huge opportunity for growth throughout that area, which is why you are seeing the pick-up in different OEM moving to the area, as well as Miracle Ford continuing to do a great job in the area. You know, what’s interesting about the Nashville zone and certainly about Gallatin as well is the small utility market. So I think you’ve probably heard a lot from Ford about how we are getting rid of or discontinuing certain car lines. And the industry data all over the zone and in Gallatin show that more and more people are wanting to buy SUV. So whether that’s a small utility, like an Escape, or what we’re going to talk about today, like the new 2019 Ford Ranger, which is a medium-sized pick-up, these customers want to get out of cars move into either a medium or large SUV or truck. John Haggard 8:18 What is causing that trend? Would you say, Chris Laye 8:20 You know, I think it’s the spirit of adventure, the spirit of wanting to have a vehicle that can go off-road. Now maybe you never take that vehicle off-road, but the looks of it, the ability for it to do that. I don’t think you can get that out of a car. So that’s why I think you’ve seen a lot of crossovers and trucks with the ability to have those off-road or aggressive features. John Haggard 8:43 So let’s jump into the new 2019 Ford Ranger. By the way, is that the newest addition to the Ford lineup? Chris Laye 8:50 Yes, it’s kind of a tricky question. You know, the automotive industry. We refresh or come out with our new products every single year similar to how you know somebody might get a new iPhone or an all-new iPhone. And with the Ranger, it’s a nameplate that we’ve had in the past. A lot of customers are aware of our old Rangers that we stopped building in 2011. And so we are bringing back this nameplate and it is the first time we’ve brought back a nameplate in quite a while in an all-new product. John Haggard 9:16 Alright, so it’s been eight years then since there was a Ford Ranger. Chris Laye 9:21 Yes, sir. That’s correct. John Haggard 9:22 All right. And so what do you see right now, you know, Consumer Reports and magazines like that always want to rate cars and trucks and SUVs and whatever it may be, any awards so far that the 2019 Ranger has won a 2019 Chris Laye 9:36 Ranger was actually one of the most awarded medium size pick-ups when it came out. And so two of those really stuck out to me. Both are from JD Power. The first is the best performance and the other is the highest quality, the mid-size pick-up truck segment. And you know, when you think about purchasing a new vehicle, probably two of the most important things are you looking for are performance and quality. So the fact that we can take home both of those awards certainly stands out to me. John Haggard 10:01 All right, and then what would you say are the most exciting features of the new Ford Ranger? Chris Laye 10:06 I have three favorite features that I think are important especially to somebody that’s in maybe a younger generation. The first one being the terrain management system. So we have a normal mode, snow, mud, and sand, which will come in handy if you are taking that off-road. Followed by trail control, which is similar to cruise control, but for load speed for low-speed off-roading. And then one of the safety features that Ford’s done a really good job of not only putting in the Ranger but really cross our lineup is Ford Co-pilot 360, which includes automatic high beam headlamps, bliss, and Lane Keeping system. John Haggard 10:43 All right now so we’re into the technology of the Ranger and people like you were mentioning earlier. You know, every year there’s a refresh and a new iPhone comes out or whatever. Any more about the technology of the Ranger that people are really excited about? Chris Laye 10:57 Yeah, one of the new pieces of technology we’ve really put a lot of innovation and research into and FR to come out with this Ford Pass Connect. So Ford Pass Connect is an app that connects to your vehicle that allows you to lock, unlock, start and stop your vehicle, as well as scheduled maintenance, appointments through your hometown dealership and scheduled times for your vehicle to turn on in the morning. So you can have a warm vehicle in the winter and a cooler vehicle in the summer. I know, often when I take flights or if I’ve been out of my car for a while, I’ll go ahead and start that started from my plane or when I land. And like I said before, Ford Copilot 360 is one of my favorite features. I think anybody that’s buying a new vehicle, this is something that they should look at, because it does have the bliss which is incredibly important. That’s that yellow light that pops up and your mirror to let you know that a vehicle is next to you so as not to get over. And then the lane-keeping system so just stay in the lane. And then the trail control would be exclusive to the Ranger as well. John Haggard 12:04 All right, and we hear a lot about Android and Apple Car Play. Does the Ranger have those available? Chris Laye 12:11 Yes, sir. So the Ranger does have Android and Apple Car Play. So both are available when it comes to choosing which one is really a personal preference. So if you have an Apple phone, use your Apple, if you have Android, you can use Android. Or you can use sync, which is the Ford technology that we have it most Ford customers are used to say. John Haggard 12:31 All right, so really, do you see any advantages over other systems other than Ford SYNC, Android and Apple Car Play? Or are there any other systems out there? Chris Laye 12:39 To me, it really comes down to personal preference. I have friends and I’ve seen customers that have Apple Car Play available that prefer sync. And I’ve seen customers that swear by Apple Car Play. So really, I would try both of them. see which one do you enjoy more, which one’s easier to navigate. And that’s the one that I’ll go with. But all three are available. John Haggard 12:58 What would you say, Chris? Are the top two or maybe three questions that people ask about the Ford Ranger when they are considering Hey, do I get this? Or do I go with another brand? Or what? Chris Laye 13:10 There are quite a few questions that people will ask themselves. And so I kind of wanted to relate that one back to why would somebody pick a Ranger over and F-150. I think when it comes to the Ranger, Ranger customers seek freedom and adventure kind of going back to that transition from cars to SUVs from the mainstream on road to kind of having that adventure feel. And the Ranger customers I think have the need for the freedom of maneuverability, capability, and versatility. And I think that’s what’s going to come into play when you’re looking at a medium-sized pick-up truck. And I think these are kind of the reasons why you would choose the Ranger over an F-150. John Haggard 13:56 All right, you know, there’s a lot of competition out there. Every car brand manufacturer wants to do a deal, of course. So if you were to say, look, here’s why you would want to pick a Ranger over say a Toyota or over a Nissan or a Chevy. Chris Laye 14:11 There are basically three different vehicles that are in these medium-sized pickups that are popular and everybody’s heard of them. So you got the Ford Ranger, the 2019 Chevy Colorado, and the 2019 Toyota Tacoma. When you think about the Chevy Colorado, the Ford Ranger is best in class max payload capacity. Ranger offers more cargo-hauling capacity than the Colorado. The Ranger also offers available technologies not found in the Colorado such as adaptive cruise control, with forward collision warning and intelligent access with push-button start. And it also has a 10-speed automatic transmission with the auto START STOP technology which the Chevy Colorado does not have. And then one of the more popular mid-size pickups is the 2019 Toyota Tacoma. However, we have the best in class max payload the Ranger with its standard 2.3-liter eco boost in line for engine which is an incredible engine. It out tows the Tacoma equipped with either the 2.7 or 3.5 v6. So a smaller engine that able to out tow a vehicle with a bigger engine, which also usually results in better gas mileage. And then the Ranger also offers some technologies that aren’t found in the Tacoma. so smart trailer tow connector, as well as the class-exclusive 10-speed automatic transmission. So several different reasons why you would choose a Ford Ranger over a Colorado or Tacoma John Haggard 15:34 And is a Nissan… Does Nissan have anything in that space that would be something someone would look at to compare? Chris Laye 15:42 Yeah, so Nissan has the frontier which is a vehicle that hasn’t really been updated in the past 10 years. I think most customers are these based off of the market share data that we look at are looking at the Colorado Tacoma, of course, the Ranger. You just don’t see as many customers comparing a Frontier to a Ranger. John Haggard 16:00 Gotcha. Okay, so when you get hungry, Chris, what’s your go-to order at your favorite hometown restaurant? Chris Laye 16:08 Well, I’m hoping that some of the podcast listeners can agree with me on this one. I eat a lot of chain restaurants because I travel pretty often. So if I will go home, it’s been a long week and I need that pick me up. I’m going to Chili’s I’m getting a Triple Dipper. John Haggard 16:22 All right. Does anybody come in second place? Chris Laye 16:29 Second place um, I’d say fast food-wise, Chick Fil A is my hero. So anytime that I need to grab something on the go, I’m always at Chick Fil A grabbing a chicken sandwich. John Haggard 16:40 All right, when you know we all develop in life and there are lots of influences that help us get on our way so to speak. Who would you say is the biggest influence in your life? Chris Laye 16:49 Yes, I think my biggest influence and my role model is my grandfather. I mentioned that I have family members that worked for Ford and that’s why we all kind of bleed blue. And so my grandfather had a significant impact on me when we were young, and he’s still doing really well. So I learned a lot from him. I value his character. He’s taught me many things that are hard to teach, like, compassion, generosity. And so those values that I think he’s instilled in me are priceless, and I think that’s why he’s my hero. Chris Laye 17:24 All right, so is there any book that you would recommend that someone read? John Haggard 17:29 You know, in which as much as I travel, I tend to listen to podcasts. So instead of reading, podcasts are usually my go-to. One of my favorite podcasts out there is it’s called Afford Anything by Paula Pant. It just talks about life and making decisions and how people use their money or save their money and I just find it extremely interesting. John Haggard 17:49 So take a look back if you, something that you wish you had known, is there something that you wish you had known that you do know now that when you first started out in the automotive business, you say gosh, if I’d only know, if only knew today what I knew then? Chris Laye 18:07 Sounds obvious when you think about it, but the relationships that you build and the impacts that they have on your day to day and your, you know your personal life, I just didn’t expect the impact that they’ve had with how much Zone Managers travel. They’re going back and forth, you’re on the road. Now, five days a week, the dealer body and the dealers have truly become not only business assets, but they play a role in your personal life as well. The relationships that you’re able to build not only with the stores, but with customers that you meet and your co-workers is certainly something that I did not expect to be the way that it is. John Haggard 18:44 So you thought it would sort of be kind of all business. Okay, I’m here let’s transact let’s do the market share reports. Let’s see what we can do and off to the next door. Chris Laye 18:52 Correct. John Haggard 18:52 Alright, so is there a story that you could share, just something that we’re a dealer or somewhere down the line has helped you with something or look at something differently or vice versa. Anything like that? Chris Laye 19:01 I think I got a story for you that kind of demonstrate to the relationships that you build with these guys. So my previous zone was New Orleans, which I truly enjoyed. And one of my stores down there had actually won President’s Award. And so in celebrating the partnership and relationship of them winning President’s Award, we actually spent two days out deep sea fishing off the Gulf Coast. Those are the moments or the relationships that you build. You know, I certainly did not take what we’re going to happen in this job. Like you mentioned earlier. I thought it was going to be more transactional. And I’m very, very happy to say that it’s not yeah, you truly enjoy being around all these guys. John Haggard 19:43 So did you reel something in on that deep sea fishing trip? Chris Laye 19:48 I did. Thankfully, because it would have been embarrassing if I did not. I won’t know if I get invited back. I caught a couple of red snappers, and that was good enough for me. I just enjoyed being out there with everybody and I’m just happy I caught something. John Haggard 20:04 What would you say that you are most curious about right now? Chris Laye 20:08 Most curious about? So I guess as it relates to the automotive industry. You see more and more manufacturers coming out with all-electric vehicles, especially Ford so we actually reveal our all-new Mustang-inspired SUV crossover on November 17th. And so I’m most curious about the direction of what we are using as fuel moving forward, and how hybrid and electricity will play into the drivetrains and the engines that we will use in the next, you know, probably a decade or two decades. John Haggard 20:44 One last question, Chris. What would you say the one thing – what is the one thing – that most people don’t know about you but they would be very surprised to learn? Chris Laye 20:56 Oh, man! Going back to what I spoke to about earlier about my passion for travel. About three, four years ago completed a lap around the world. John Haggard 21:07 A lap around the world? Chris Laye 21:09 A lap around the world. So I went to about 15 different countries and did a full circle around the world. John Haggard 21:15 Wow. Okay, so obviously flying into 15 different countries that way. Is that how you’re saying? Chris Laye 21:22 Yes. So one lap around the world. Some of those were flights, some of them were trains. But yes, completed the full lap. John Haggard 21:30 Wow. So what? Just a few of the cities that you landed or took the train to? Chris Laye 21:37 Yes, I went to, I guess, the countries where I went to, Iceland, the Netherlands, Germany, India, Thailand, Belgium. So basically started in Atlanta and then worked my way east. John Haggard 21:52 All right. How long did it take you to do the circle to do the lap? Chris Laye 21:55 60 days? John Haggard 21:56 60? 2 months? Chris Laye 21:58 Two months. So I spent a couple days of each place that I went to and learned a lot and enjoyed meeting new people and having different experiences. John Haggard 22:07 Talking to Chris Laye everybody, the Ford Sales Zone Manager for, they call it, Zone C in the Memphis region on the Miracle Ford podcast. Chris, thanks for joining us here today. Chris Laye 22:18 John, thank you so much for your time. It was an honor to be on the podcast with you. Thank you so much! John Haggard 22:22 You bet. 049 Bill Farris–Habitat for Humanity From Banker to Builder—Thanks to Habitat for Humanity Bill Farris is always learning. Each time he volunteers with Habitat for Humanity he learns something—how to swing a hammer, use a saw safely, measure accurately…and it’s fun. He describes a day with Habitat as seeing “ants on crackers”…in other words, a swarm of folks helping to create a home! A retired banker, Bill now thinks of himself as a builder. “Don’t think you can build a house? Join a Habitat group and see what you can accomplish,” Bill challenges everyone. Not only do volunteers have the opportunity to learn new skills, but also they can use their existing skills, including painting, landscaping, and even clean up, to finish out the construction. Men, women, and older teens can be part of the team, and the time commitment is flexible. An ecumenical Christian ministry, Habitat for Humanity provides the life-changing opportunity for people to own affordable quality homes. Habitat family members participate in learning about home ownership and then invest “sweat equity” as they work alongside the volunteers. They too are gaining new skills, and they are also acquiring the dignity of seeing what their own work has achieved and an appreciation for the belief in them exhibited by the commitment of so many volunteers. Together, the families and the volunteers create safer neighborhoods for more children and facilitate a pathway of hope for those served. Habitat for Humanity of Greater Nashville builds 32–50 houses a year in a four-county area. With that many homes to build each year, Habitat is always looking for additional construction volunteers. If you are interested in building as a group, or as an individual, please visit their website www.habitatnashville.org for additional information. Successful business planning comes when we develop the habits to utilize them. There are three guests joining Monica on the show today, to talk about how they’ve been successful with their business planning. Misty Woodford has been in real estate for about 10 years and formerly owned her own brokerage. She no longer owns her firm and now works with Benchmark Realty and is actively selling. Trish Myatt has been in real estate for nearly 14 years, and right from the start got into a good system and long-term planning. Barry Owen was in the Army for 12 years and has been in real estate for 24 years. He owns his own firm and teaches and still does some selling but mostly runs the company. Why is business planning so important? For Misty, the motto that stuck with her is “failing to plan is planning to fail.” Having a plan allows her to continue to move forward with tasks, following the plan like a roadmap. It is a stress reliever for Trish, and having a plan allows her to have something to come back to when things start getting crazy. Barry uses business planning because it gives him a place to go — it boils down to whether what he’s doing right this minute is contributing to where he wants to go. When making her business plan, Trish reflects on what worked for the past year and what she wants to carry over and tries to look ahead to see where the market is going, to see if there are any proactive changes that need to be made. Barry starts business planning for the next year on the first day of the fourth quarter. He tries to think of three big priorities to hit in the next year and uses the remaining time in the quarter before the new year to figure out how he’s going to turn those goals into practical steps he can achieve. Misty sets aside three days towards the end of the calendar and sets three business, personal, and spiritual goals. By November she likes to have what the plan will look like for the next year. It’s important to schedule in family time and time away from the business as well, as well as any marketing events you want to do for your clients. Trish talks about her “pumpkin run” and how she uses time to show appreciation to her clients. Making time can be difficult, but you just have to do it. Planning it as part of your day and guaranteeing you will do it is vital for making sure the business is supporting the clients. Barry does this first thing in the morning each day, so he doesn’t have to think twice about anything during the day. This makes it easier to deal with obstacles as well. Clients often understand that you need time away from them to best help serve them when you are helping them. Misty turns her phone off at a certain time each night. When working on your plans, it’s important to consider how much business you want to do, your finances, and take a look at what systems you have that help you focus forward. Misty lays out what she has to have, what would be nice to have, and what is the dream level. Knowing what is enough in all those areas is an important start. Also understanding what you can delegate or refer to other people can help redefine success for you and your business plan. Barry’s plan is about moving forward every single day towards a better quality of life. Financial planning is incredibly important as part of your business plan. Trish focuses on the synergy between business purchases and how they come back to reward her. Sometimes investing in something personally can help you focus on making smart business decisions. Misty talks about giving yourself permission to know what you thrive on and allocating resources for the other things. Spending your money on the right things is also important to make sure your business is sustainable. Barry ended up outsourcing for some positions he needed to be filled and it’s been a huge help to his business. Barry, Trish, and Misty talk about some of the software and technology they are using in their businesses. Some of the things they are using are Commissions Inc, Brokerment, Top Producer, QuickBooks, and Wise Agent. The panel shares some tips for keeping up with their businesses. Trish uses the checklists in Top Producer to follow up with clients and maintain to-do lists for each day. Misty also utilizes checklists but she uses the Wise Agent program to help manage transactions. Members of the panel also still use paper planners, as well as Gmail and Barry uses Google Drive as a backup. Having these systems is beneficial, but only if you have the right habits to utilize them! Having an accountability partner is very useful for getting the most out of systems and making sure you’re getting done what you’ve said you’re going to do. Barry’s final closing thoughts are about the idea of 80/20 — 20% is the vital few or the stuff that must be done and 80% is everything else. If someone wants to succeed, they have to know who and what the 20% are. This can help prioritize your projects and organize your day. Trish has brought some of her customer service background to her real estate business. She uses her systems to manage customer information so she can recognize their house anniversaries, birthdays, and annual reviews. For people who aren’t too high tech, you can still grow a big and healthy business. For Misty, the key to making business planning and time management work was knowing who she was as a person and knowing what she needed the systems to do for her. Finding what worked for her is what made her do it. Education is a huge help to stay focused on your business and provide creative ideas. It doesn’t have to be real estate-centric. You can also learn from peers that you admire — don’t be afraid to ask them for tips! Monica shares three final tips for successful business planning. The first is setting an appointment: set an appointment with yourself to do your planning, then actually go to the appointment — make it a priority! After you have met with yourself and done your planning, meet with a friend who can hold you accountable to stick to do you plan. The second tip is to choose one new system that can help you improve your business next year. Her third tip is to find or pick a new source of education for yourself. Is there an area of your business where you are weak? Find a source of education that will help you grow in that area. When Misty isn’t selling or teaching, you can find her chasing her two young children around Franklin as they pursue their wildest dreams. Trish Myatt Trish Myatt is a Broker with Benchmark Realty in the Greater Nashville area. A native of the region, Trish has a wide knowledge of where the market has been and pays attention to where it is heading. With 13 years in the business, she holds the ABR, CRS, SRES, and ASP designations and serves as a Director for both her local and state associations. She is excited to serve on her first NAR committee in 2018. A long-time supporter of RPAC at the Golden R level, Trish understands the importance of staying on top of local, state, and national legislation that impacts her clients. Ask her about the annual “Pumpkin Run” and you'll learn how she cultivates her strictly repeat and referral business. Barry Owen Barry Owen is a Broker/Owner of the firm Pareto Realty in Nashville, TN. The Pareto Principle is the 80/20 rule — The Vital Few — and Barry models his life and business after this model, focusing on what he considers to be the most important items every day first.
