Host Jeremy C. Park talks with Daniel Liu, who recently was honored with the Youth Volunteer Award at the 2025 Strobel Volunteer Awards hosted by Hands On Nashville powered by United Way of Greater Nashville. Daniel Liu, a pre-med student at Vanderbilt, founded the Peace of Mind program to address the shortage of volunteers for home hospice care in Nashville. He recognized that while many students wanted to volunteer, transportation was a significant barrier, particularly for reaching the 90% of cases requiring in-home visits. Drawing inspiration from his middle school experience with free bus rides to nursing homes, Daniel developed a solution by coordinating free transportation for Vanderbilt students to volunteer in home hospice care, providing them with valuable patient experience while meeting a critical community need.Volunteer Uber Voucher PipelineDaniel created a simple pipeline that allows volunteers to apply for Uber vouchers to visit patient sites, considering factors like distance, time, and cost. Since its inception, 35 classmates have been trained to administer Hospice care, volunteering at patient homes and contributing to over 600 hours of service across nearly 200 patient cases. Daniel has personally volunteered for about 350 hours over two years, visiting around 20 patients, and finds the Uber voucher program to be one of the most impactful ways he has contributed to his community.Volunteering Shapes Leadership JourneyDaniel reflects on how his volunteer experience has shaped him as a leader, emphasizing that it taught him the importance of taking the first step in community involvement. He explains that he now understands the process of initiating change, from writing grants to securing funding, which gives him confidence in future endeavors. Daniel also describes the unique nature of hospice volunteering, highlighting that each patient interaction is different and tailored to individual needs, ranging from playing piano to discussing art.Vanderbilt Peace of Mind InitiativesDaniel discusses his work with Vanderbilt Peace of Mind, which involves meeting people, understanding their experiences, and conducting educational training sessions with experts in hospice care. He expresses his vision to lead interventions in communities and emphasized the importance of finding partners, communicating effectively, and identifying community needs to create impactful solutions. Daniel was recognized as the Youth Volunteer Award winner at the 2025 Strobel Volunteer Awards, which he considers a significant honor. He encourages others, especially college students, to take leadership roles and create movements for community betterment. Daniel also shares his email address for those interested in partnering with or supporting his efforts with Vanderbilt Peace of Mind.Email Daniel Liu at daniel.x.liu@vanderbilt.edu to learn more and get involved with Vanderbilt Peace of Mind.

In this episode of the Journey of My Mother's Son podcast, I talk with, Jon Sexton. This is the first interview that I've recorded with a guest that wasn't Sandy or Alex since late May of this year. I have to tell you – Alaska and Canada were incredible, but it sure is good to be back sharing the stories of the many little people in many little places that are doing all of those many little things that make the whole world change! Jon and I talk about his entrepreneurial journey. It started on the tennis and basketball courts and other athletic venues of Visalia, California and has now landed him as the host of the TV show, Selling Nashville. Jon's journey, like so many other entrepreneurs took a few twists and turns along the way. He originally relocated to Nashville to pursue a career in music. In order to not fall into the “starving artist” category, he used some of the leadership skills and life lessons that he learned from sports to get into the health club and gym industry. What initially started as a way to simply help make ends meet while he pursued his music career, eventually turned into another passion and eventually ownership of his own health club and gym business. While running his business, he started investing in real estate, which eventually led to him securing his real estate license and heading up his own team of agents. Now, in the realm of Greater Nashville's real estate market, Jon stands as a distinguished figure, acclaimed for his exemplary achievements and unwavering commitment to excellence. As mentioned previously, Jon is the host for the television show, Selling Nashville, which can be seen on HGTV, Apple TV, Travel Channel and more. Renowned as an award-winning Realtor, Jon has garnered accolades such as the title of "Best Real Estate Agent" in Williamson County and the distinction of being named a "Top Real Estate Agent" by both the Nashville Scene and his team, NASHVILLE HOME, which shares the recognition of "Best Real Estate Team" in Williamson County. With an impressive national ranking of #55 and a prominent position as #1 in Tennessee, Jon holds the coveted title of Top Agent in Davidson County, Nashville Metro, and Williamson County, underscored by his steadfast dedication to ensuring customer satisfaction. Elevating his status further, Jon is an exclusive member of REALM, a prestigious global organization comprised solely of the top 1% of luxury agents worldwide, a testament to his unparalleled expertise and distinguished service. Endorsed by financial guru Dave Ramsey as a Trusted Local Provider, Jon's reputation for integrity and excellence is further solidified. In Jon's own words, "It is an honor to be one of the select few Realtors trusted by Dave Ramsey and Ramsey Solutions. I am excited to continue to guide and serve those in need in being assisted and educated in the home buying and selling process." Beyond his remarkable achievements in real estate, Jon has also established himself as one of Nashville's foremost entrepreneurs over the past decade. Recognized as a standout figure in the entrepreneurial landscape, Jon was bestowed with the title of "Top 50 Entrepreneurs in Tennessee" by Business Leader's magazine and was identified as one of the "Top 10 Entrepreneurs to Look Out For" by Disruptors Magazine. Jon's attitude revolves around the belief that success is not merely measured by accomplishments but by the satisfaction and results of his clients. He attributes his greatest strength to having "the heart of a teacher" and a genuine concern for the well-being of those he serves, ensuring that their needs and desires are met with utmost dedication and care. We've all been there. Awkwardly standing around at an event trying to decide who to talk to first and what the heck to discuss. The weather? The latest sports story? Travis and Taylor? But (hopefully), we finally break the ice, get to know some new contacts, and feel like we really rocked this networking thing! What happens next? Maybe we connect on LinkedIn and send a short, “It was great to meet you,” but usually not much else. About Shannen Stewart Shannen created Heels & Handshakes in 2013 after returning to her hometown of Nashville and missing the community of women within the hospitality industry. She noticed the lack of opportunities to network. Shannen wanted to ensure that the women who made up the Greater Nashville workforce would all have positive and collaborative interactions to enrich their lives professionally and personally. What started as a ten- person meeting for cocktails and conversations has evolved to over 3,000 women and men in the Middle Tennessee community. Since founding the organization, she has curated over 240 events for the Heels & Handshakes members. Shannen's event brand partnerships and collaborations include Kendra Scott, TEDx, Ballet Ball, Tiff's Treats, and the Nashville Young Leaders Council to execute thoughtful activations for the Heels & Handshakes community. Her work in hospitality has received accolades and awards, including the 2021 Nashville Lifestyles Women in Business Recipient, The 2019 Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce NELA Awards Hospitality & Tourism Recipient, the 2019 Meeting Professionals International Tennessee Chapter Supplier of the Year and the 100 Leading Persons in Personal Services, Food and Hospitality in 2018. After his military service, Jon Snider experienced a “less-than-ideal” transition into the civilian workforce. It would be this experience that would later motivate him to support transitioning service members in the Greater Nashville community and go on to apply and be selected to be the inaugural chapter chair of the HCA Healthcare Nashville-Corporate Veterans Colleague Network. As the new program manager of military affairs for HCA Healthcare, Jon aspires to honor the legacy that Avery King left for the organization by elevating the programming to strengthen workforce pipelines through the veteran and transitioning service member communities, increase collaboration with community partners that align with the vision of the military affairs program, and advance the professional development of internal veteran and military spouse colleagues in order to enhance the support of the HCA Healthcare mission. Jon holds many military and civilian honors to include a master's of science in healthcare quality and safety from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, 2021 graduate from the American Medical Association's Health Systems Science Scholars Program, 2020 graduate from the HCA Healthcare Leadership Institute Academy, and a bachelor's of science in community and public health from Middle Tennessee State University. Outside of work, Jon enjoys spending time with his wife and two children (ages 4 & 1), by exploring hiking trails of middle Tennessee, attending sporting events like Nashville Sounds and Nashville Predators, and enjoying live music experiences that Nashville has to offer.Support the show
