A critical incident causes a full-on agency response, perhaps it involves fatalities, or perhaps it involves the use of force. The scene is secured and the media creates a narrative about the event that is not quite right. Does your agency respond? Does your agency have a policy? How soon does the agency chief or sheriff explain the facts to the media and the public? In this episode of the Policing Matters podcast, host Jim Dudley speaks with Judy Pal, founder and principal of 10-8 Communications LLC, about best practices in crisis communications – both internal and external to your agency. Judy is a co-author of the recently released "Strategic Communications for Law Enforcement Executives" published by the COPS Office. Prior to teaching and consulting full-time, Judy Pal was an assistant commissioner with the NYPD serving as an advisor to the Police Commissioner. Before that, she was Director of Operations for FBI-LEEDA, Chief of Staff with the Baltimore and Milwaukee Police Departments, and served as a member of the command staff overseeing public information with the Atlanta, Savannah and Halifax (Canada) police departments. Born on the Ides of March 1966 in Wolfville Nova Scotia, Ross Parks attended High School in the Valley then Loyalist College in Belleville Ontario where he completed his Broadcasting Diploma in 1987. Ross spent 28 years in the broadcast/media field in various positions with Radio, TV, Billboard, Jingle Production, Publications and Transit advertising. His passion since his parents bought his first small diecast ‘Datsun' in 1969 was always automotive. Ross collected ‘diecast miniatures' all along, but it wasn't until he picked up a 1990 Brochure for the all-new Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo, that he thought "I want to purchase a real one next time." Next up Ross met an individual in Harrisburg Pennsylvania in 1993 that he worked with thru his Radio Station Jingle Venture, Todd Matthews, who was a real AMC collector. He had restored and kept 5 real cars! Five years later on his birthday (1998) and 8 years of saving, Ross bought his first Z from a car dealer in Vancouver. That black 1992 Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo! On September 14th, 2003 he decided to have a party at his home in Halifax for anyone that had a Z car. 22 cars showed up. In April 2004 Ross and two other members incorporated the Atlantic Z Car club Society, a nonprofit which is now comprised of over 600 owners in Atlantic Canada. One of those original house party individuals came to him in the fall of 2006 and said ‘I just got laid off, and we know of many folks in Atlantic Canada with jack stand cars(cars that are in the midst of restoration but likely will never make it to the end) we should start an import company". On January 1st, 2007 ZSportCanada was formed. As per the website, their main goal was to bring in rust-free cars that were complete, assist with shipping, organizing and negotiating with US sellers to make it a very pleasant experience for customers. Since then they have become Canada's largest importer of Datsun vehicles to Canada, with over 439 completed transactions. In the summer of 2020 Ross became sole owner of the Datsun North properties. Almost immediately Ross formed partnerships with a variety of individuals with different skill sets. A fabricator. A mechanic. A body man. A painter. A machinist. An engineer. With these folks, Ross and his team started a restoration of Datsun business across Canada as well. This business is now in full motion with work available for 20 years or more. In 2006 Parks connected with another Z enthusiast who was interested in partnering up on buying a set of buildings near Kentville NS. They purchased an old ‘chicken farm' in North Alton in March of 2012 to store their own vehicles, of which they had 50 between the two of them. However, they had 190 empty spaces, so they completely renovated and turned it into Canada's first ‘Car Farm' called ‘Datsun North'. Since then they have been sold out every year for winter storage space. Ross' plans for 2022 are to work on his own cars and get out of the importing and restoration business and continue to expand and improve the winter storage business. It's quite a journey in a niche market driving great business lessons. Entrepreneurs are the backbone of Canada's econohis. Leading up to covid Bryan was getting prepped for his first men's physique competition down in Halifax Canada. He had spent the last year building a stage wining physique with his coach Ryan Gray. Due to the unfortunate occurrence of Covid, the entire country had shut down two weeks leading to the show. Absolutely crushed, Bryan's perspective of the lockdowns was to get bigger and bring an even better physique the next time around. Being a welder by trade, he was fortunate enough that his uncle had a little shop outside the city on his farm where he made his own rack and bench, purchased a barbell and some plates, and was able to continue training at home. An idea had sparked in Bryan's mind… Everyone was charging a crazy amount for gym equipment, used and new. He posted his rack on Facebook marketplace to see if anyone else needed a rack and bench with the main idea of just wanting to help people get affordable, locally made equipment. Within two weeks he had up to 15 paid deposits! Off and running he went. He spent all summer hand-making everything from full cages, half racks, benches, independent stands, and almost every accessory you could think of! Fast forward to today he has now moved into his own shop, invested everything he has into his tools and business, and now has his vision set on creating the most badass commercial line of equipment to come out of Canada. Not to mention the opening of the Bryks Fit Compound later next year to not only showcase all his equipment but have it as a fully functioning gym with an environment like no other! Stay tuned Bryks Fit is only beginning!

This is the first of two podcasts that Dean talks with Judy about regarding police and the media. This first podcast topic is Image Development for police.Image DevelopmentImportant to understand what ‘image’ is – not a logo or marketing program, it’s the perception and values one has about you or your agencyPeople see ‘police’ as police across the country – one bad event affects us allPERF talks about developing trust and legitimacy to help prevent violent extremism, the President’s Tasks Force on 21st Century Policing talks about legitimacy, as does recent reports from David Weisburd about how legitimacy can help prevent crimeDeveloping our image in the past was left to the media – didn’t turn out so good for usWe need to do better, “Next to doing the right thing, the most important thing is to let people know you are doing the right thing.” – John D. Rockefeller But we are a humble professionWhat can we do as leaders? We have to ‘be’ what we want people to ‘think’ – always and in all waysWhat words do you want people to think of when they see you, your cars, buildings, social media presence? Then BE THOSE WORDSBrand is a department-wide effort – EVERYONE needs to know the brand and the role they play in creating it – a single interaction can set the brand and is more important than any PR campaign3 image-makers: direct contact, word of mouth (social media) and traditional media.Be conscious of what you are ‘selling’ as your brand. People perceive things differently – be acutely aware of that.
