This, the 5th edition of the biennale, has grown into one of the most prestigious applied Art and Design events in the Greater Region. Artistry of this level is worth elevating, celebrating, respecting and encouraging through our educational system - another theme of the conversation. This year hosts Czechia as the Pays d'Honneur, bringing centuries of glassmaking, ceramics, puppetry and design heritage to Luxembourg. My guests this week are: - Her Excellency, Ambassador Barbara Karpetová, who has been instrumental in coordinating Czechia's participation. - Tom Wirion, Director General of the Chambre des Métiers. - Embroidery artist Yanis Miltgen, whose sculptural textile work has gained international acclaim. - Ceramicist Ellen van der Woude, whose work is influenced by nature, harmony and emotional resonance. Ambassador Barbara Karpetová speaks so eloquently about the changing borders and names of her homeland, and how, throughout this, the language of the artists developed its own conversation with people. The humour that can be spotted in artisans' work through generations of history; the means to remain resilient through periods of political repression. Craft can hold the history and identity of a nation's people. Her Excellency also highlighted the psychological importance of making: the sense of satisfaction in producing something from beginning to end, and the power of craft to reconnect us with our own creativity which is so easily lost in an era of screens and speed. Ambassador Barbara also spoke about the rich material landscape of ‘Bohemia' which easily allowed the arts of certain genres to flourish, such as glass-making. On the Luxembourg side, Tom Wirion, Director General of the Chambre des Métiers, underscored how essential the craft sector is to the country's cultural landscape. Tom noted that one of the greatest challenges remains perception: encouraging young people (and parents) to view skilled trades as a stable, innovative, and rewarding career path. “Buying a crafted object,” he explained, “means investing in a gesture, not just a product.” His vision is to make artisans visible, valued, and actively supported through new pathways, partnerships, and gallery collaborations.  And naturally the educational system has to allow this subject to shine more too. Ceramic artist Ellen van der Woude, formerly a lawyer, turned to ceramics after personal loss and found profound therapeutic power in clay. Her sculptures embrace movement, tension, harmony, and imperfection: an homage to nature's organic balance. For this edition, she presents three works inspired by the transition from winter to spring, reminding us that renewal follows even the longest winters.  Ellen's own confidence in realising that she was indeed an artist only settled once she won the Jury Prize in the first edition of De Mains de Maîtres. She went on to win numerous other awards since. Yanis Miltgen, at just 24 years, found embroidery at the age of 15. Like Ellen, he found working with his hands and mind to be therapy as he had panic attacks at school. Yanis has won the most prestigious embroidery prize (just last week in London); the Hand & Lock Prize. He also won “Les de(ux) mains” Prize from the Comité Colbert (which is ‘the voice of luxury in France). Yanis has brought embroidery to an entirely new level of textile sculptural artistry, merging embroidery with metal, silicone, and reclaimed materials. His pieces, often requiring hundreds of hours, push the boundaries of what textile art can be: scientific in process, poetic in effect. We are reminded at the end by Ambassador Karpetová that even we, as customers, continue this line of artisan appreciation, as we observe the flow of an artists hands' into our homes, or gifting to a loved one. While we have had some amazing guests on this podcast over the past three years, today I am proud to introduce our most distinguished guest of all, Her Excellency, the Consul General of Ireland in Toronto, Ms. Janice McGann. In fact, Janice became the inaugural Consul General of Ireland in Toronto back in 2022. As her appointment in Toronto comes to its end, Janice took time out of her busy schedule to sit down with me and suffer through what she called a truly authentic Irish in Toronto experience by appearing on the podcast. We discuss the challenges of establishing a brand new Consulate in a place with a large Irish diaspora. We also discuss Janice's career before coming to Toronto and what the future will look like for her as she begins a new role with the Department of Foreign Affairs at home in Dublin. The Irish community in Toronto will be forever grateful to Janice and her team for the work they have put in over the past few years to establish the Consulate and we wish her the best.

She has become part of the United Kingdom's diplomatic service and is currently serving as Britain's Ambassador to Slovenia. Why am I so impressed? Because she is totally blind. I have been fortunate enough to spend some time with her and she kindly agreed to record this conversation. It is clear from the start that she is totally dedicated to the task, has considerable experience and is straight-talking and very confident. She is also good at languages, yes she speaks fluent Slovene.

Col mio senso dell'umorismo un po' malizioso mi caccio in situazioni imbarazzanti.TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]C'ho un problema coi pronomi. Anzi no, ho problemi coi pronomi su diversi fronti. Allora, ogni volta che cerco di tradurre qualcosa dall'inglese all'italiano, mi trovo a dover affrontare il problema dei pronomi che ormai chi parla in inglese è abituato, appena si presenta, a dire il nome, poi i pronomi che usa. Quindi quando io partecipo a gruppi, a incontri d'oltralpe, in lingua inglese dico "Mi chiamo Cristina Marras, pronouns she/her", quindi mi chiamo Cristina Marras e uso i pronomi 'she', al nominativo, e poi 'her' in tutti gli altri casi in inglese. Ora, in italiano questo non esiste, non non si usa, in italiano comunque è tutto reso incredibilmente difficile dal fatto che ogni articolo, sostantivo, aggettivo, spesso anche alcune forme verbali vengono declinate dipendentemente dal genere. Quindi se io voglio evitare di usare un linguaggio sessista, maschilista dove usando il maschile si intendono anche le donne, se voglio dare visibilità anche all'altro genere, dico "tutti e tutte", altra cosa problematica è che nell'italiano manca la forma neutra, quindi mentre in inglese si dico "they", loro, vuol dire che non è né maschio né femmina, può essere qualsiasi cosa, qualsiasi genere, in italiano questo non è possibile.Perché ve lo sto raccontando? So when I participate in groups, in transalpine meetings, in English I say "My name is Cristina Marras, pronouns she/her," so my name is Cristina Marras and I use the pronouns 'she', in the nominative, and then 'her' in all other cases in English. Now in Italian this does not exist, it is not used, in Italian actually it is all made incredibly difficult by the fact that every article, noun, adjective, often even some verb forms are declined depending on gender. So if I want to avoid using sexist, macho language where using the masculine also means women, if I want to give visibility to the other gender as well, I say "all male and all female," another problematic thing is that in Italian the neutral form doesn't exist, so while in English you say "they," and it means, it is neither male nor female, it can be anything, any gender, in Italian this is not possible .Why am I telling you this? Because I have a wicked sense of humor, which means a little mischievous, a little silly even, for some people. So the other day I was just in one of these meetings, with other people who came from all over the world, but mostly English-speaking people, and when we did the round of introductions I introduced myself by saying "my name is Cristina Marras and the pronouns I use are 'she' and 'her' and then I added 'her Majesty' which is like saying Her Excellency, yes her monarch, Majesty is usually used for the queen.And there were some people who were annoyed because there was a bit of an impression that I was making fun of the fact that I was using, that people (rightly so) demand inclusive language that recognises all genres. And I felt terrible about it, first of all because I have a personal relationship with the queen. When I became an Australian citizen I had to swear allegiance to the queen, but for real, just with the thing there, I didn't swear on the Bible however I had to swear allegiance to the queen because I am subject. And then guys, with the hard work I do every day to try to use an inclusive language, me of all people, I mean, it's a thing that you can never win, you have to constantly walk on eggshells and nothing, I will pay more attention, I promise, I promise, however leave me my sense of humor, but I will reserve it for other circumstances.
