In December, I talked to "folk pianist" George Winston about his then-new Christmas single, "Silent Night," which he released to benefit Feeding America. His version was inspired by electronic artist Joseph Byrd and New Orleans piano player Professor Longhair, and at the time I ran part of our interview.  This week, I'm running the interview in its entirety, as he talks at length about his affection for New Orleans' piano players then and now, and another pianist who influenced him--Vince Guaraldi. Through the conversation, we see Winston as a fan and as a technician, someone who methodically hears things in others' performances that he can repurpose for his own music. He also, understandably, talks about his own best-selling December and the challenges it posed.  In this episode, I also share my love of honky tonk hero Dale Watson, his Christmas album Christmas Time in Texas, and my favorite track on it, "Santa and My Semi." In the episode, I mention the Ranking the Beatles podcast, which this week examines the closest thing to a Christmas song The Beatles recorded, "Christmas Time is Here Again." Jonathan and Julia from Ranking the Beatles appeared on 12 Songs last holiday season to rank The Beatles' Christmas fan club releases including "Christmas Time is Here Again."  If you like what you hear or are curious, please subscribe wherever you get your podcasts—Apple Podcasts, Google Play, Stitcher, Pandora, or Spotify.

The first crossover episode for "12 Songs"!  Sooner or later, it happens to every podcast. In this case, I'm talking to husband and wife team Jonathan and Julia Pretus, who host the "Ranking the Beatles" podcast, which ranks Beatles songs, working from the bottom up. Jonathan appeared on "12 Songs" last year to defend Paul McCartney's "Wonderful Christmastime," and this week he and Julia help break down The Beatles' annual fan club-only Christmas messages, which range from the relatively straightforward to borderline musique concrète.  These tracks are not easily purchased, but they can be found on YouTube and mp3 blogs online. One song, "Christmas Time (is Here Again)," was released in 1995 as the B-side of "Free as a Bird." You can, however, find Ringo Starr's faithful version from his 1999 album, I Want to Be Santa Claus. In this week's episode, I also review Dolly Parton's third Christmas album, A Holly Dolly Christmas.  Our theme music comes from AF the Naysayer, who now has the vinyl seven-inch version of his new single, "Adelheid." You can hear it and get it at his Bandcamp page.

Manna Bible Lessons

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 19, 2020 5:27

Dear Manna Family, The song “Happy Days are Here Again!”, came out in November, 1929, ironically about the same time as the stock market crash. Happiness comes from the word happenstance, which means chance. Happy means that you are pleased with your current circumstances, which are changeable. We are studying the Fruit of the Spirit. The first virtue listed in Galatians 5: 22 is love; today we’ll look at the second which is joy. Joy is deeper than happiness. Joy is not affected by changing circumstances. The Greek word for joy is chara, which means grace or gift; or charis, which means to rejoice. Joy is our response to God’s eternal gift of salvation, and the promise of heaven (Romans 5). Joy is a soul deep satisfaction in our relationship with God Himself. Our source of joy is ultimately the character God which never changes. Jesus is our example of joy, even in the face of suffering and death. Hebrews 12: 2 Fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him, endured the cross…… It was the joy of obeying His Father, and the joy of heaven that enabled Jesus to endure suffering and death. We are commanded to follow Jesus’ example. Philippians 4: 4 Rejoice……in the Lord……always, again I will say, rejoice! This is a command, repeated twice, to be joyful all the time, in every circumstance. Notice that our joy is in the Lord, not in our changing circumstances. This verse was written by a man who understood suffering. When Paul and Silas preached in Philippi, they were arrested, beaten and imprisoned. Acts 16: 23 And when they had inflicted many blows on them, they threw them into prison, commanding the jailor to guard them securely; Vs 24 and he, having received such a command, threw them into the inner prison, and fastened their feet in the stocks. Vs 25 But about midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns of praise to God, and the prisoners were listening to them. They were beaten and bloody, in pain and in prison. You would think they would be moaning and complaining. However instead of complaining, they were singing………hymns of praise to God! Their joy was based on their relationship with Jesus, which not even pain could take away. We sing the Christmas Carol, “Joy to the World, the Lord has come……”. We have joy because Jesus invaded planet earth to set people free from sin and death. Our joy is eternal because Romans 8: 38-39 promises us that “nothing can separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Our joy is based on the unstoppable love of God through Jesus. This supernatural joy attracts attention. When Paul and Silas were singing even when in prison, the other prisoners were listening. It is incomprehensible to the world that anyone could sing after being beaten bloody. Joy in the face of suffering is a witness to the world that God the Holy Spirit lives inside us. There is an old song, “Count your many blessings, name them one by one, and it will surprise you what the LORD has done.” When you write that list, you just might experience joy! Remember, God designed us to “do life together!” Love and prayers, Brad ••• Subscribe to listen each week as the Manna class learns and grows together through their in-depth study of God's Word. This comprehensive, expository series is taught by Brad Hannink, a gifted communicator of the Bread of Life. Manna is a Bible study life group that meets at Valley Baptist Church, located at 4800 Fruitvale Ave. in Bakersfield, California. Manna believes in doing life together. If you’re in need of prayer, email us your request at mannabiblepodcast@gmail.com and our class will be happy to add it to our prayer list. Sonoma’s Transcendence Theatre Company opened its seventh season of “Broadway Under the Stars” in Jack London State Park with Stairway to Paradise, the first of four staged concert events scheduled this year. The company takes performers with Broadway, touring company, film and television experience and creates an original themed musical revue around them. This year’s theme is ‘Every Moment Counts’ and director/choreographer Tony Gonzalez has designed 20+ production numbers full of memorable moments. Along with Broadway show tunes, the Transcendence play list includes a mix of recent and past pop hits, classic rock, and specialty numbers. They’re all done ‘Broadway style’ and occasionally with a twist. It often works well, but sometimes it doesn’t. The first act ran the gamut from numbers from Sunday in the Park with George, South Pacific, The Wiz, and Victor/Victoria to “Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard” and “Feelin’ Groovy” by Paul Simon. Highlights included a recreation of the famous Judy Garland/Barbra Streisand duet of “Get Happy/Happy Days are Here Again” with Courtney Markowitz and Shaleah Adkisson, Christine Lavin’s popular “Air Conditioner” song, also done by Adkisson with Tim Roller, and a large-scale production number of “Blue Skies” with the entire company led by Joey Khoury singing and dancing to the Irving Berlin classic. In an amusing bit that allowed the performers (and audience) a break, the cast played a round of ‘Transcendence Family Feud’ with contestants pulled from the crowd. The act ended on a local note with a performance of “Everything”, a tribute song written by Sonoma County songwriters Mark Beynon and Joe Label and the Transcendence version of “Oklahoma!” which morphed the Rogers and Hammerstein classic into “Oh, Sonoma!” The second act included numbers from Cabaret, Into the Woods, and The Sound of Music mixed with Justin Timberlake, Van Halen and, in the evening’s one clear misstep, Don McLean’s “American Pie”. Sorry guys, but perky, Cheshire cat-like smiling performers singing “This’ll be the day that I die” just doesn’t work for me. It actually came off a little creepy. Things snapped back with a jaunty Michael Linden performing Drew Gasparini’s “A Little Bit” and large-scale numbers with Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop the Feeling” and Van Halen’s “Right Now” before concluding with “Finale B’ from Rent. Dress in layers, pack a picnic, indulge in some wine or food purchased from local food trucks and vintners serving on-site, then sit back and enjoy a unique north bay entertainment experience. 'Stairway to Paradise' runs Friday through Sunday through July 1 at Jack London State Historic Park in Glen Ellen. Doors open for picnicking at 5pm; the show starts at 7:30pm.
