The 90s are back or whatever! At least they are in round one as Bobby, Bailey, and Jen attempt to identify classic jams from the 90s from one-second clips of their instrumental interludes. Sound difficult? It is! Things take a turn in round two as we tell our players how to get to Sesame Street, quizzing them on properties that have been parodied in the show's "Monsterpiece Theater" segment. And of course, anything can happen (and we can confirm that anything DOES happen) in the lightning round. With this episode, the lineup for the season eight playoffs are set, so the competition only gets hotter from here! NOTES ⚠️ Inline notes below may be truncated due to podcast feed character limits. Jarred Kelenic and Julio Rodriguez are both struggling a little to start the season. Would it benefit them to separate them in the lineup? How much longer until it's time to send Julio down? Rob Rang has the scouting report on linebackers available in next week's draft. A texter suggests that umpires wear shock collars to ensure they get their calls correct; and if they don't, at least we'll get some amusement out of it. The Kraken have signed their second-ever draft pick, Ryker Evans. We should see him in either Seattle, or in Palm Springs with the AHL team next season.

Today we'll start diving into our history. As an actor, part of the work of creating a role is to understand the history of the character (their backstory) and how it impacts the life they're living and the moments they're experiencing in the story being told. Their history dictates how they show up in the world of the play. Our history dictates how we show up in our world, in the role of parent. We'll explore why understanding our history – the history of how we were raised and its impact on how we parent our children, is so important. We'll kick off our show with The Raise a Glass Series, get on to our questions to explore, and end with A Short Story Before We Go. MFA is the sometimes-musical, dramedy, in 3 acts, 1 intermission, the length of a sitcom designed to give mama's (and any caregiver) a break in the day to breathe and reset along with a much needed audio hug. Lake Life With Molley And Chad Podcast

Episode 5:  In today's episode, Molley and Chad invite their friends Katie and Brian to the studio.  We're going to discuss the all-important topic of Boat Music!  What type of music should you consider taking along for your day or weekend on the lake?  Let's find out. Chad begins by basing the music on the activities planned for that particular outing.  Wake boarding and similar activities call for something more high-energy.  An evening cruise might call for something more mellow.  Everyone has a song they love.  Katie recommends classic rock for a day out on the lake.  Brian likes newer music.  Molley prefers to avoid slow music, although there's always an exception when you're out looking for driftwood. The group agrees that having a good stereo system on your boat is important.  However, if that's not the case, you can always take along a really good Bluetooth speaker to blast your tunes. Molley recommends having a wide-variety of music and artists.  Older music and classic rock are usually good if kids are around, because the language is safer.  In fact, she used to create different CDs for lake weekends, depending upon the group.  Now, everyone has playlists that do the same.  Don't miss the discussion about Chaka Kahn.  Do you agree or disagree? One of Katie's all-time favorites for the lake is Paul Simon's Queen of Corona (a.k.a. Me and Julio Down by the School Yard).  She also likes a cover of Dixieland Delight by Nappy Roots. Music can become a tradition for your outings.  Molley's dad influenced some of the selections she and Chad have.  Around sunset, they like to breakout Hello Darlin' by Conway Twitty.  Chad introduces a song he found on many of the boating playlists.  It's Waves by Mr. Probz.  It's pretty good.  Click the link to give it a shot. Do You Have a Go-To Song You Have to Hear on the Water? Chad:  He says he'll sing along with all of yours. Molley:  Atomic Dog Brian:  Anything by Kings of Leon Katie:  It's got to include something by CCR They agree Yacht Rock and songs from Bob Marley work well.  Music Tip Chad recommends downloading at least 1 playlist with 100 songs or more.  If your cell phone loses its signal in the middle of the lake or your radio doesn't pick up multiple stations, you'll still have music to play. Introducing New Music The group agrees that finding new covers of older songs can make for a fun playlist.  Some of them are even better that the originals. Music Etiquette Katie comments that if multiple boats pull into a cove, it's a good idea to take turns listening to the various playlists from each of the boats.  Don't try to blow everyone else out or dominate it. Remember, you're out there to have a good time. Part of the adventure is having the right tunes for the day.  Find some that work for you and create memories that you'll take home with you.  The right songs will take you back to those outings and get you thinking about your next trip, so have fun with it We'll leave you today with one of Katie's recommendation, Redneck Yacht Club by Craig Morgan.   That's a wrap for this episode.  I hope you found it helpful, insightful and maybe a little entertaining. Thanks for Listening! If you enjoyed this podcast, please consider sharing it with your friends.  We hope to see you out there soon.  Until next time, here's to warm weather and calm waters!   Don't forget to subscribe!

This week on the pod we zig a little into our first film crit episode, and chat with local filmmaker Benji Wade about Hillbilly Elegy, a movie that has been on everyone’s lips since it came out in time for the election. The resemblance is uncannyIt’s the not-so-riveting story of how a poor white kid from Southeast Ohio overcame generational trauma through nothing but his own pluck and grit (or so the film would have you believe), attended Yale Law School, went to work for Peter Thiel — one of the great monsters of recent American history — and eventually moved back to Cincinnati to start a non-profit that helps, like, train unemployed coal miners and steelworkers how to code, or something.Seems a little far-flung to what we usually talk about on RANGE, but the plight of poor people in extractive economies in Appalachia is pretty similar to the plight of poor people in extractive economies in the Inland Northwest, and this movie is a masterclass in blaming the poor for their plight. So yeah, a topic ripe for RANGE. The movie is bad, but the conversation is good, and Benji and I took the time to cobble together a mountaintop worth of other actually good coal-country (and coal-country-adjacent) content for you to remove into your ear- and eye-holes.That was a coal mining joke. You’re welcome. DISPATCH: Walt Disney and The Olympics Of Progress PLAY-CAST Progress Artist:          Public Service Broadcasting (with Tracyanne Campbell) Album:        Every Valley Public Service Broadcasting are a London-based pseudonymous musical group known for performing live with newsreel sound collateral and video footage of historical technological events. The band have toured internationally and in 2015 they won the Vanguard category of The Progressive Music Awards. publicservicebroadcasting.net     Robert Moses (December 18, 1888 – July 29, 1981) was an American public official who worked mainly in the New York metropolitan area. Known as the "master builder" of mid-20th century New York City, Long Island, Rockland County, and Westchester County, he is sometimes compared to Baron Haussmann of Second Empire Paris, and was one of the most polarizing figures in the history of urban development in the United States. His decisions favoring highways over public transit helped create the modern suburbs of Long Island and influenced a generation of engineers, architects, and urban planners.   This simultaneously bold and bland building housed the State of Illinois pavilion, featuring Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln. The winkin' blinkin' Lincoln was a sensation. A Message From The Manager of Radio Free Disneyland it's a small world (presented by Pepsi Cola for UNICEF) was also staged in a modern building. Rolly Crump's Tower of the Four Winds presaged the the playful look the Disneyland alliteration would take on. Ford Motor Company's Magic Skyway got the "skinniest" relocation to Disneyland after the Fair. Walt Disney had fought Cast requests to build a new administration building at the Park, but gave in when it involved making a home for the Fair's dinosaurs to be seen from the Disneyland Railroad. General Electric's Carousel of Progress had the most successful relocation of all the Fair shows. Playing at Disneyland and then at Walt Disney World. WED Enterprises (Walt Disney Imagineering) brought three lessons learned at Disneyland to the Fair. Capacity, Capacity, and Capacity. Mirror Maze Artist:          Disney Studio Orchestra Album:        Walt Disney and the World's Fair The music to a side event or pre-show at the General Electric World's Fair complex. Presumably a hall of mirrors.   Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard Artist:          Paul Simon Album:        Paul Simon This major hit by Simon describes the atmosphere in the Flushing-Corona neighborhoods near the Fair site. The Robert Moses "drop - in" at the song's mid-point is from his Fair Opening Speech.     The Illinois Story Artist:          Disney Studio Orchestra Album:        Walt Disney and the World's Fair Pre-show music from the State of Illinois pavilion featuring Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln..       Atomic Number Artist:          Case/Lang/Veirs Album:        Case/Lang/Veirs From the June 2016 eponymous album from Niko Case, kd lang, and Laura Veirs   NY Times: Nuclear Fusion Every 6 Minutes To Be a World's Fair Attraction https://www.nytimes.com/1964/04/02/archives/nuclear-fusion-every-6-minutes-to-be-a-worlds-fair-attraction.html The Skydome Spectacular Artist:          Disney Studio Orchestra

"Graceland," "America," "You Can Call Me Al," "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover," "Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard," "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes"—Paul Simon’s list of classic songs is long and literary. So any week is the perfect week for Pop Literacy to celebrate this rare master of songwriting, who completed his final tour in the fall and has an album out, In the Blue Light, filled with reimagined versions of some of his songs. A literary master is always revising.  Pop Literacy host Jennifer Keishin Armstrong is joined by guest hosts (and fellow Paul Simon nerds) Daniel Ford, author of Sid Sanford Lives!, co-founder of our Writer’s Bone Podcast Network, and our producer, and Spencer Wise, author of The Emperor of Shoes. We discuss which Paul Simon song we’d listen to if we could only choose one for the rest of our lives, the hits we’re a little sick of, the best deep cuts, the highlights from his final tour, and who might be able to fill his vital role as the poet of the midlife crisis in the future. To enhance your listening experience, we also made you two playlists: Paul Simon 101 to help you wade in and then go deeper, and Potential Future Paul Simons, featuring some mainstream pop picks with potential (Taylor Swift, John Mayer) as well as some indie gems (L.A. Salami, Father John Misty).

Sonoma’s Transcendence Theatre Company opened its seventh season of “Broadway Under the Stars” in Jack London State Park with Stairway to Paradise, the first of four staged concert events scheduled this year. The company takes performers with Broadway, touring company, film and television experience and creates an original themed musical revue around them. This year’s theme is ‘Every Moment Counts’ and director/choreographer Tony Gonzalez has designed 20+ production numbers full of memorable moments. Along with Broadway show tunes, the Transcendence play list includes a mix of recent and past pop hits, classic rock, and specialty numbers. They’re all done ‘Broadway style’ and occasionally with a twist. It often works well, but sometimes it doesn’t. The first act ran the gamut from numbers from Sunday in the Park with George, South Pacific, The Wiz, and Victor/Victoria to “Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard” and “Feelin’ Groovy” by Paul Simon. Highlights included a recreation of the famous Judy Garland/Barbra Streisand duet of “Get Happy/Happy Days are Here Again” with Courtney Markowitz and Shaleah Adkisson, Christine Lavin’s popular “Air Conditioner” song, also done by Adkisson with Tim Roller, and a large-scale production number of “Blue Skies” with the entire company led by Joey Khoury singing and dancing to the Irving Berlin classic. In an amusing bit that allowed the performers (and audience) a break, the cast played a round of ‘Transcendence Family Feud’ with contestants pulled from the crowd. The act ended on a local note with a performance of “Everything”, a tribute song written by Sonoma County songwriters Mark Beynon and Joe Label and the Transcendence version of “Oklahoma!” which morphed the Rogers and Hammerstein classic into “Oh, Sonoma!” The second act included numbers from Cabaret, Into the Woods, and The Sound of Music mixed with Justin Timberlake, Van Halen and, in the evening’s one clear misstep, Don McLean’s “American Pie”. Sorry guys, but perky, Cheshire cat-like smiling performers singing “This’ll be the day that I die” just doesn’t work for me. It actually came off a little creepy. Things snapped back with a jaunty Michael Linden performing Drew Gasparini’s “A Little Bit” and large-scale numbers with Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop the Feeling” and Van Halen’s “Right Now” before concluding with “Finale B’ from Rent. Dress in layers, pack a picnic, indulge in some wine or food purchased from local food trucks and vintners serving on-site, then sit back and enjoy a unique north bay entertainment experience. 'Stairway to Paradise' runs Friday through Sunday through July 1 at Jack London State Historic Park in Glen Ellen. Doors open for picnicking at 5pm; the show starts at 7:30pm.
