This is TGTBTM and we watched an unheard of, wacky-titled film from the 80's about feminists, uncharted Californian jungles, bloodshed, and cultural affinity. How did 'B-movies' come to be called that? Who is Christine Lavin, and why did she write a song about this film? And is tuna casserole an appropriate meal to make for dinner for strangers? My guest today is North Carolina based singer and songwriter, Chuck Brodsky. I first heard about Chuck through our mutual friend, Jeff Lionz. Jeff, who knows about my undying love for baseball, sent me a couple of Chuck's CD's (The Baseball Ballads and The Baseball Ballads 2) in the mail. I put them both in my car and listened on drives for the next two months. I was taken by the stories and the amount of thought and research that was put into each lyric. In addition, all his songs seemed to give life to unsung heroes of the game. Rather than singing about any ol' no-hitter, Chuck sings about the one Dock Ellis threw on LSD. He also has a song called, "Death Row All-Stars," which is a tragic tale about how a warden in Rawlins, WY used baseball to set execution dates. Though he's a member of the Philadelphia Jewish Sports Hall of Fame and has 22 songs in the Baseball Hall of Fame Sound Recording Library, Chuck is far from being labeled a "baseball songwriter." He's written about the hollocaust, politics, and many other topics during his monumental career that spans over three decades. (now quoting form chuckbrodsky.com) Chuck and his songs have appeared in several films and on tv. His beloved Philadelphia Phillies featured an interview with him along with his song “Whitey & Harry” in the documentary “Richie Ashburn: A Baseball Life.” The 2003 Sony Pictures release “Radio” included a cameo by Chuck as well as his closing title track. “Moe Berg: The Song” appears in the PBS film “Jews and Baseball: An American Love Story” (2010). His music has been featured on ABC's Good Morning America, NPR's All Things Considered, Dr. Demento, ESPN, PBS, and by NFL Films. Kathy Mattea's recording of Chuck's song “We Are Each Other's Angels” appears in the film “Dear Mr. Goodlife” (1998). The African Children's Choir Of Uganda also recorded the song on their "Love Is A Journey" CD. “Blow ‘em Away” has been recorded by David Wilcox and many others, and also appears on the Christine Lavin produced “Laugh Tracks.” Sports Illustrated placed "The Ballad Of Eddie Klepp" among the 25 Greatest Songs About Sports of All–Time. In April of 2019 Chuck was inducted into the Philadelphia Jewish Sports Hall Of Fame for his Baseball songwriting. (end quote from chuckbrodsky.com) Special shoutout to Kerrville Folk Festival! New Jersey based Mara Levine is a fabulous singer, and a great interpreter of other people’s songs. She’s just released a lovely third album “Facets Of Folk” the follow up to “Jewels and Harmony” (2013) and her debut “Mara’s Gems” (2009) which were both very well-received. A very well curated collection, Facets of Folk features 13 tracks that showcase various different faces of folk music, often with a strong social conscience, and including favourites from Gordon Lightfoot, Paul Simon, Leonard Cohen and Christine Lavin alongside some new discoveries from contemporary songwriters. Mara Levine tours across the US, often with Gathering Time (Stuart Markus, Hillary Foxsong, and Gerry McKeveny). She also performs as a duo with both Terry Kitchen, and Caroline Cutroneo. Mara Levine sat down with Folk Roots Radio at the 2018 Folk Music Ontario conference to chat about her music, and shared a live version of Tommy Sands “Daughters and Sons”, which appears on the new album. Sonoma’s Transcendence Theatre Company opened its seventh season of “Broadway Under the Stars” in Jack London State Park with Stairway to Paradise, the first of four staged concert events scheduled this year. The company takes performers with Broadway, touring company, film and television experience and creates an original themed musical revue around them. This year’s theme is ‘Every Moment Counts’ and director/choreographer Tony Gonzalez has designed 20+ production numbers full of memorable moments. Along with Broadway show tunes, the Transcendence play list includes a mix of recent and past pop hits, classic rock, and specialty numbers. They’re all done ‘Broadway style’ and occasionally with a twist. It often works well, but sometimes it doesn’t. The first act ran the gamut from numbers from Sunday in the Park with George, South Pacific, The Wiz, and Victor/Victoria to “Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard” and “Feelin’ Groovy” by Paul Simon. Highlights included a recreation of the famous Judy Garland/Barbra Streisand duet of “Get Happy/Happy Days are Here Again” with Courtney Markowitz and Shaleah Adkisson, Christine Lavin’s popular “Air Conditioner” song, also done by Adkisson with Tim Roller, and a large-scale production number of “Blue Skies” with the entire company led by Joey Khoury singing and dancing to the Irving Berlin classic. In an amusing bit that allowed the performers (and audience) a break, the cast played a round of ‘Transcendence Family Feud’ with contestants pulled from the crowd. The act ended on a local note with a performance of “Everything”, a tribute song written by Sonoma County songwriters Mark Beynon and Joe Label and the Transcendence version of “Oklahoma!” which morphed the Rogers and Hammerstein classic into “Oh, Sonoma!” The second act included numbers from Cabaret, Into the Woods, and The Sound of Music mixed with Justin Timberlake, Van Halen and, in the evening’s one clear misstep, Don McLean’s “American Pie”. Sorry guys, but perky, Cheshire cat-like smiling performers singing “This’ll be the day that I die” just doesn’t work for me. It actually came off a little creepy. Things snapped back with a jaunty Michael Linden performing Drew Gasparini’s “A Little Bit” and large-scale numbers with Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop the Feeling” and Van Halen’s “Right Now” before concluding with “Finale B’ from Rent. Dress in layers, pack a picnic, indulge in some wine or food purchased from local food trucks and vintners serving on-site, then sit back and enjoy a unique north bay entertainment experience. 'Stairway to Paradise' runs Friday through Sunday through July 1 at Jack London State Historic Park in Glen Ellen. Doors open for picnicking at 5pm; the show starts at 7:30pm. Camille West, Steve's guest, is often compared to Christine Lavin. She's funny. Very funny. The song featured, that Camille wrote, is "The Nervous Wreck Of The Edna Fitzgerald". As she puts it, it's a Yuppie sea shanty. The Free Harry movement has started! Seems some folks are not happy with how Steve treats his dummy and are mounting a protest. Despite Steve's own protestations, he can't convince people that Harry is just...well, a dummy. Also featured is Steve's original "Cupcake Song." It's basically a list of the 52 ingredients Steve once found on the label of some cupcakes he was buying at the supermarket. It's a true story. I dare you to recognize five of them. For instance, what's carboxy methyl cellulose?
