How much history has your family farm built? Today I'm speaking with Evan McCommon of Mahaffey Farms, a very long-running, historical family farm located in Haughton, Louisiana. By combining traditional agricultural practices with modern marketing, including farm-to-table dinners, a farm store, and a bed-and-breakfast, Evan and his family are introducing a new generation to fresh seasonal foods. Mahaffey takes a holistic approach to everything they do. The main principles they operate under are 1) regenerative landscapes, 2) resilient community and 3) valuable nourishment. Join us to hear how Mahaffey Farms thrives while adhering to these principles! You'll hear: What Evan did before farming 1:13 About the cycle for timber management 3:11 What types of pigs Mahaffey Farms raises 5:17 How the processing is done for larger animals 11:39 What the transition from forest to pasture is like 14L07 What channels Mahaffey Farms sells through 17:52 How Evan manages the growth of the business 22:12 About the main obstacles of running their pork and beef facility 29:51 About Mahaffey Farms' marketing efforts 32.25 The major things Evan's learned throughout his farming journey 35:13 What Evan believes the future holds for Mahaffey Farms 40:57 About the Guest:Evan started managing his family's land and timber resources at a young age in 1995. During that same time he also had a 15 year career in product design/engineering. His first job was for a chainsaw/weed-eater manufacturing company and later for a commercial cooking equipment company designing equipment for large fast food chains. After 15 years of sitting in a cubicle under fluorescent lights, and only spending time on the farm during weekends, he decided to go out on his own and pursue a career in selling real estate. This was in 2006 during the real estate boom and when the 2008 market crash happened, he realized what he really wanted to do was work on the land to make a living and live a more purposeful life...only working for money/commissions just wasn't rewarding. During his time in real estate he developed an interest in healthy eating and clean food. Realizing there were almost zero local farms working on organic or sustainable food production, he saw an opportunity to bring back the family farm! Having all the acres in timber production he started taking little pieces and developing small market gardens and selling "organic" vegetables. It didn't take Evan long to realize the sandy soils on the family farm just were not very productive for vegetables. Reading Joel Salatin's books showed him that pastured livestock would be a better direction to convert forests into pastures and really build some soil. In fall of 2012, Mahaffey Farms got the first pigs on pasture and by the end of 2013, the farm had cattle and broilers on pasture! Thanks to the love and support of the community and the warm welcome of these high quality foods on the local market, Mahaffey Farms has been growing at a rapid pace to meet the demand! There have been setbacks and challenges but overall the farm has grown every year. Mahaffey Farms is now (according to state inspectors) the largest producer of pastured pork and chicken in the state of Louisiana with on-farm processing for chicken, and in 2020, purchasing its own beef and pork processing plant. If we build up more community members to help triage the issues, can contribute PRs, and maybe even build up some maintainers to handle the daily patch releases, that would be a good place for me, so that I can just overlook the higher-level decisions and only tune into specific decisions when I need to.” — @youyuxi [0:40:18] - “This whole process is a constant discovering new ideas, trying it out, realizing it doesn't work, and then trying something else. it's never going to be a straight-line process.” — @youyuxi [0:44:03] Resources mentioned: - Evan You (https://evanyou.me/) - Evan You on LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/in/evanyou) - Evan You on GitHub (https://github.com/yyx990803) - Evan You on Twitter (https://twitter.com/youyuxi?ref_src=twsrc%255Egoogle%257Ctwcamp%255Eserp%257Ctwgr%255Eauthor) - Ionic Vue (https://ionicframework.com/docs/vue/overview) - Jason Miller (https://www.linkedin.com/in/developit) - webpack (https://webpack.js.org/) - VuePress (https://vuepress.vuejs.org/) - Vue CLI (https://cli.vuejs.org/) - ALGTR (https://www.instagram.com/lexieliu_/?hl=en) - New Fruity Pebbles Crisps (https://www.simplemost.com/new-fruity-pebbles-crisps-are-big-potato-chips/) - Curse of the Dead Gods (https://www.focus-home.com/games/curse-of-the-dead-gods) - Hades (https://store.steampowered.com/app/1145360/Hades/) - So You Want to Talk About Race (https://bookshop.org/books/so-you-want-to-talk-about-race/9781580058827) - Minor Feelings (https://bookshop.org/books/minor-feelings-an-asian-american-reckoning/9781984820365) - Tetsuwan Birdy Decode (https://myanimelist.net/anime/3974/Tetsuwan_Birdy_Decode) - Panel de Pon (https://panepon.fandom.com/wiki/Panel_de_Pon_(SFC)) - SoSplush (https://www.etsy.com/shop/SoSplush) - Enjoy the Vue on Twitter (https://twitter.com/enjoythevuecast?lang=en) - Enjoy the Vue (https://enjoythevue.io/) Special Guest: Evan You.

Tim and Randy are joined by Evan Howard of Forward Thinking Fitness to discuss the success Evan's had by utilizing software and systems within his business. As a gym owner, automation plays a significant factor in the success of your fitness business. Evan has been a super-user of our CLA (Client Lifecycle Automation) and explains what the automation has done to his business. As you’ll hear him discuss, not only has it drastically brought down his business expenses, but has also freed his time to focus on other things. The CLA does the work that would otherwise require a sales team, thereby reducing your overhead costs. At a time when gym owners are trying to bring down their expenses, automation is the surest way to do it. As Evan details in the chat, automation does the job consistently. You do the job once and the system replicates it over and over without intervention. Automation and systems don’t just stop with new client acquisition though. The long term nurture process is another area where automation shines by providing constant touchpoints at key points in the journey. Additionally, if ever you want to sell your business, buyers will be most interested in the systems you have in place. That means that implementing automation can not only reduce your expenses and free up your time, but it can also increase the value of your business.Talking of automation and software, Evan is building an app that improves the client experience in the gym. His intention with the app is to bring together the many different apps that gym customers have to download into one app that stores all their data and their interactions in a central place.Click play to hear more about the power of automation, how you can get started, and the tool that Evan is creating.Key TakeawaysHow automation brings down your business expenses (03:30)The Client Lifecycle Automation does the work that would require a sales team (06:24)How a system helps you be consistent in your messaging (08:54)The CLA helps you own your traffic and advertise to them for free (14:47)Long term nurture within automation (17:49)How Evan's new app helps improve customer experience (21:52)How systems will help if you ever want to sell your business (31:10)Systems give you more freedom as a business owner (33:25)Additional Resources:Evan Howard: evan@trainftf.comEvan's business: https://www.trainftf.com--------Register for the Fitness Growth Summitwww.fitnessgrowthsummit.com/------www.PFMarketingSolutions.com/Callwinninggym.com/workshopwww.PFMarketingSolutions.com/Automationwww.CLACourse.comwww.ProFitGPS.netMarketing Talk with Fitness Professionals Facebook Grouphttps://PFMarketingSolutions.com/Data--If you are interested in a free audit for your gym, visit http://bit.ly/free_gym_audit--You can find out more about Tim and the strategies covered in this episode by checking out our website.--Would you rather watch the video version instead?Head over to our YouTube channel to watch this episode by going here--If you don't already have my book, get your copy FREE here.--Connect with Tim:Schedule A CallFacebookInstagramLinkedInConnect with Randy:FacebookInstagram--Subscribe to the podcast on Apple, Spotify, Google, Stitcher, YouTube, or anywhere else you listen to your podcasts. If you haven't already, please rate and review the podcast on Apple Podcasts!

It's well-established in the AI alignment literature what happens when an AI system learns or is given an objective that doesn't fully capture what we want. Human preferences and values are inevitably left out and the AI, likely being a powerful optimizer, will take advantage of the dimensions of freedom afforded by the misspecified objective and set them to extreme values. This may allow for better optimization on the goals in the objective function, but can have catastrophic consequences for human preferences and values the system fails to consider. Is it possible for misalignment to also occur between the model being trained and the objective function used for training? The answer looks like yes. Evan Hubinger from the Machine Intelligence Research Institute joins us on this episode of the AI Alignment Podcast to discuss how to ensure alignment between a model being trained and the objective function used to train it, as well as to evaluate three proposals for building safe advanced AI. Topics discussed in this episode include: -Inner and outer alignment -How and why inner alignment can fail -Training competitiveness and performance competitiveness -Evaluating imitative amplification, AI safety via debate, and microscope AI You can find the page for this podcast here: https://futureoflife.org/2020/07/01/evan-hubinger-on-inner-alignment-outer-alignment-and-proposals-for-building-safe-advanced-ai/ Timestamps: 0:00 Intro 2:07 How Evan got into AI alignment research 4:42 What is AI alignment? 7:30 How Evan approaches AI alignment 13:05 What are inner alignment and outer alignment? 24:23 Gradient descent 36:30 Testing for inner alignment 38:38 Wrapping up on outer alignment 44:24 Why is inner alignment a priority? 45:30 How inner alignment fails 01:11:12 Training competitiveness and performance competitiveness 01:16:17 Evaluating proposals for building safe and advanced AI via inner and outer alignment, as well as training and performance competitiveness 01:17:30 Imitative amplification 01:23:00 AI safety via debate 01:26:32 Microscope AI 01:30:19 AGI timelines and humanity's prospects for succeeding in AI alignment 01:34:45 Where to follow Evan and find more of his work This podcast is possible because of the support of listeners like you. Anxiety and depression are the leading causes of ill health and disability worldwide, yet traditional medicine doesn’t get at the root cause. If you visit a GP, you are likely to get a referral to a psychiatrist and a prescription for a mood stabilizer. A functional medicine practitioner, on the other hand, will investigate what’s going on underneath—and you may be surprised to learn that there is a connection between gut issues and mental health. Evan Brand is a certified functional medicine practitioner, nutritional therapist and host of the Evan Brand Podcast. He uses at-home lab testing and customized supplement programs to find and fix the root cause of a wide range of health symptoms including chronic fatigue, obesity, depression and anxiety. On this episode of Crowdfunding Uncut, Khierstyn interviews crowdfunding success mogul Evan Varsamis, founder and CEO of Gadget Flow. He has built a platform that puts innovative products in front of over 25 million people per month, runs an international team remotely, and has some great advice for aspiring crowdfunding professionals. You don’t want to miss their energetic and informative conversation, so be sure to catch this episode. The story behind crowdfunding platform giant - Gadget Flow What started in 2012 as a part-time project quickly grew into a crowdfunding giant that now hosts over 10,000 products across 140 categories. Gadget Flow is the third largest Indiegogo partner and they have successfully worked with over 6,000 customers thus far. Evan and his team recognized a niche market need for technology and design products that may not get picked up by large platforms such as Amazon and Etsy. They are able to host a wide spectrum of products and give backers exactly what they need to know (tech specs, images, brief descriptions, etc.) in a beautifully simple way. To hear Evan tell his engaging story, be sure to listen to this episode of Crowdfunding Uncut. How Evan’s Gadget Flow team gauges the potential crowdfunding success of a campaign Not every campaign or product idea that comes across Evan’s desk will be successful. Gadget Flow currently has an acceptance rate of 78-80%, and the team is highly trained to differentiate the gems from the duds. By using an internal evaluation process they look at the top campaign specs: funding time remaining, the quality of the presentation, and if the product’s team has been following established steps for crowdfunding success. Evan’s employees look for those unique teams that aren’t just shooting in the dark when it comes to marketing and campaign efforts. Their #1 red flag? If a campaign has less than 10% of their goal raised after five days of campaigning. Be sure to hear the full story behind the evaluation process by listening to this episode - your campaign can’t afford to miss it. How Evan built a global remote team for Gadget Flow and his strategies for overcoming telework challenges The current Gadget Flow team is comprised of 25 people in 8 countries. How does Evan manage to lead such a diverse team? And why did he choose to pursue remote teamwork rather than a traditional office setting? The answer is found in commute time - he was tired of wasting precious productive hours commuting to and from a physical workspace. He found that highly skilled employees and contractors often do their best work in their own environments. By allowing (and even encouraging) his team to remain in their hometowns and countries, and utilizing remote work tools such as Slack, Evan created a global team that is passionate about Gadget Flow. He tackled the issue of creating a strong company culture by implementing weekly video calls with each one of his team members. Evan’s desire was to encourage personal connections, even though miles and time zones separated each individual. It’s such a great story and a testimony to dedicated team members, you don’t want to miss it. It s not every day that you get to talk at length with a world-renowned artist. Even rarer is the opportunity to speak with one who has been labeled a child prodigy. Evan Sharma didn t begin painting until he was 9 or 10 years old. He remembers seeing the Mona Lisa when his family visited the Louvre and being inspired by the fact that such a small painting has had an impact on so many people. That inspired him to try painting. Fast forward only a handful of years and his work is being praised worldwide and he s running a commercially viable business selling his work. As was said, it s not every day that you get to talk with a child prodigy. Join Evan and Dane for their conversation on this episode of Converge. How does a 13-year-old painter get such broad exposure? You may be tempted to think Evan became known via the power of social media. While he does have a thriving Instagram account, that s not what got him his first shot at fame. A family friend and fellow artist who loved Evan s work suggested he apply to be part of The Artist Project – a high-level art fair in Toronto, Canada. Within a few months, he received an acceptance letter and Evan and his Dad headed off to the fair. That s when the media came to know who Evan was because he was the youngest artist to ever display at the Artist Project. Evan shares his story with Dane and talks about his creative process, so be sure you listen. Though Evan Sharma is already a widely recognized painter, his dreams have just begun. At 13 years old, Evan Sharma has already accomplished much more with his art than many professional painters do in their entire careers. He s selling his work quite profitably and donating large amounts to his favorite charities, and even though he loves painting he thinks it is likely to be a hobby in his adult years because he wants to be a Doctor. It s uncommon to see a person as young as Evan with so much ambition, but what s more surprising is the level-headed way he approaches his dreams. His perspective is that you pursue what you want and expect the rest to fall into place as you go along. More of us adults could use a shot of that kind of attitude. Many things contribute to success in any endeavor. One of the interesting aspects of Evans success is that many things have contributed to it. Sure, he is a natural-born painter. You don’t have an eye for color, form, and composition like he does at such a young age without having natural talent. But he’s also had a unique combination of experiences and a supportive family to spur him on. The combination has set him up for great opportunities that he is taking full advantage of. But Evan believes everyone has opportunities just as exciting as the ones he has had, they just don’t always see them for what they are. You can hear more refreshing perspectives like this from Evan on this episode of Converge. How does a successful 13-year-old artist view the business side of the art business? A tension felt by many artists is the love of their creative expression through their art over against the need to make a living from their art. Dane asks Evan about his experience with that tension and his response was that he doesn’t see a reason for there to be a tension at all. He actually enjoys the business side of things and doesn’t see any reason the two need to be at odds. You can hear how Evan is running his business and the way he’s using the funds to support charities that he believes in by listening to this great conversation. With the vast ocean of an industry that exceeds 122 billion dollars of supplements, pills, powders and elixirs in our wellness world, just exactly how do we decipher which things will actually work for the path we are walking in our personal wellness journey? An even better question is how do we know which supplements to trust and what natural plant-based adaptogens will give us more sustained energy throughout the day? JOIN THE FACEBOOK GROUP | REVIEW THIS PODCAST It should not come as a shock to anyone that the weight of our current responsibilities in this modern world are growing more every day. Combine this fact with all the social media, electronic, and technology distractions that pull us away from living a life of optimal wellness, and then how can we hit the reset button without wearing a bathrobe in the mountains for 5 days? (JK) :) To help transcend overwhelm and excess stress, today on the podcast we're talking about the natural ways we can modulate stress and help to normalize our bodies by finding more balance. We're talking with my good friend, Nutritional Therapist, and Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner, Evan Brand, about using adaptogens; natural and phyto-therapeutic uses of plants to help us heal and give us more energy. Functional Medicine Through An Ancestral Lens If you been listening to the podcast for a while, you know that I've been a huge fan of Rhodiola Rosea as well as Maca for energy, so today on the podcast, if you've been curious about using adaptogens for wellness and energy this is going to be an awesome show for you. I know you're going to love (just as much as I did) Evan's down-home, grounded and authentic personality where we dive into topics like functional medicine through an ancestral lens, how to get back in touch with your inner dialogue, letting go of "paralysis by analysis," what adaptogens and supplements are best to take with you while traveling, and one of my most favorite seven for seven rounds we've had yet on the show. Be sure to stick around to hear Evan's take on the emotional quotient in letting go of old weight and how to use plants to give the type of healing that could never be produced in a lab. What Are Adaptogens? Adaptogens: Modulate stress responses and can help normalize body imbalances. By supporting adrenal function, they counteract the adverse effects of stress. They enable the body's cells to access more energy; help cells eliminate toxic byproducts of the metabolic process and help the body to utilize oxygen more efficiently. Phytotherapy refers to the use of plants for their healing abilities. Adaptogens are a unique class of healing plants: They help balance, restore and protect the body. As naturopath Edward Wallace explains, "An adaptogen doesn’t have a specific action: It helps you respond to any influence or stressor, normalizing your physiological functions." Top 9 Adaptogens Rhodioloa Rosea: boosts endurance and fights depression (golden root) Ashwaghanda: helps to promote healthy levels of energy and sleep Schisandra berry: lowers inflammation, supports adrenal health, improves liver and digestion Maca: helps with reducing fatigue, enhancing energy and endurance Cordyceps: considered the “ginseng of mushrooms” and are known to have a truly awesome effect on endurance and stamina Holy Basil: has been found in many studies to be equivalent to many modern painkillers Ginseng: panax ginseng roots are proven anti-inflammatory, can regulate blood sugar and can even inhibit some characteristics associated with cancer. Reishi Mushroom: traditional Chinese medicine uses reishi to "calm the spirit." Reishi, (literally "supernatural" mushrooms) have been used for more than 2,000 years, making them perhaps the oldest mushroom to be used medicinally. They can be helpful to reduce anxiety, alleviate insomnia, combat fatigue, and lower blood pressure. Shawn Stevenson calls this "the mushroom of immortality” Licorice Root: increases energy, increase immune function Listen to Episode 111 As Evan Uncovers: What it means to look at functional medicine through an ancestral lens. How Evan helps his clients through functional medicine and different tests. What we can do to get back in touch with our human nature by getting rid of WiFi, blue light, and spending time with nature. Evan's experience working for 21st Century Parks and how he fell in love with nature and forest bathing. How to ingest adaptogens for optimal benefits to combat stress, fatigue, and enhance performance What are the best adaptogens to help manage anxiety? How to use natural ways of living and being to support homeostasis in the body. Why more problems come from over researching and "information overload" which creates analysis paralysis that make people avoid doing anything. What are the top three Adaptogens for balancing the body and nervous system: Perfect Acai Revive: Rhodiola Rosea, Cordyceps, Grape Seed Extract The best foods and supplements to take on the road when traveling How CBD oil and other healing modalities can support the well-being of those suffering from cancer and various health disorders The right types of mindset and emotional intelligence that makes a difference when overcoming a chronic disease Power Quotes From Evan Brand [tweetthis] "What we've forgotten is how powerful nature can be to heal us." - @mrevanbrand [/tweetthis] [tweetthis] "It's not what happens to you in life but how you respond to it." - @mrevanbrand [/tweetthis] About Evan Brand Evan Brand is a Certified Holistic Nutritionist, Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner, and Nutritional Therapist who is a globally recognized leader in the fields of ancestral health, Paleo nutrition, and functional medicine. Building better business relationships is a hot topic. You can spend lots of time reading blog posts and listening to podcast episodes about it. But rather than spend all that time trying to find good advice and perspectives, you’d be better off listening to somebody who does it well. One of the people that come to my mind right away is Evan Baehr. In this conversation I ask Evan some pretty straightforward questions about why he sees relationships as one of the best assets he has in business and how he goes about establishing, nurturing, and extending those relationships in ways that not only benefit him and his company but also the person on the other end. In the end, relationships may be the only place where I can truly meet a need. Every business leader is talking about the importance of meeting client or customer needs. No doubt, it’s an important concept to get your head around. But something that’s not said often enough is that the needs your business meets affect real people. The better your relationship with the real people behind the needs, the better your ability to meet those needs in a meaningful way. Evan Baehr makes that point in this episode of Real Relationships by saying, “In the end, relationships may be the only place where I can truly meet a need.” Find out more about what he means by that statement, on this episode. The benefit of relationships when it comes to finding the right new team member. Most companies hit the point where key team members need to be added to the team to fill critical roles within the organization. The typical way to go about finding those people is pretty artificial - scouring LinkedIn for recommendations, receiving resumes, conducting interviews - and while all of those are acceptable parts of the process none of them make the most of the business relationships you have already established. On this episode, Evan Baehr describes how his search and hiring process has benefitted from tapping into the great relationships he has established. This is a key insight you’re not likely to hear anyplace else. Forget about your normal corporate thank you gifts. Stand out by being thoughtful. The idea of giving a gift or card to a customer is nothing new. It’s been happening for years. But doing it in a way that makes you stand out, that shows you care - that’s an art form that few companies seem to have perfected. If you want to make a meaningful impact on your business clients to build a stronger relationship you need to forget about the coffee mug with your company logo on it. Think intimate. Think thoughtful. On this episode, Evan Baehr gives a couple of great examples of things he’s done to make an impact on customers through thoughtful thank you gifts. You can take his examples as fuel for the kind of thought and genuine care you need to put into the consideration of thank you gifts. If you’re a founder looking to raise money as your first priority, you’ve got it all wrong. When I asked Evan Baehr for his best piece of relational advice for those who are starting a company he pointed out that most founders are in the room because they are looking for people to fund their project. Though he sees that as important he also thinks it’s getting the cart before the horse. If you want to be successful at funding your startup you first need to be raising friends, not money. Listen in as Evan describes what it means to put relationships first, on this episode of Real Relationships. Outline of this great episode [0:30] My introduction of Evan Baehr, co-founder of Able Lending. [1:58] What was it about the Able Lending idea that caught Evan’s attention?
