Esperanza and Irwin talk of a few versions of Bonac Tonic. The first was a nickname used by bonackers when referring to Hampton Dairy brand iced tea beverage that comes in a green and yellow carton, and is real, fresh brewed tea. The second, and our topic for today, is defined by one of its founders, Grant Haffner, as the following: “Bonac Tonic is a collective of painters, sculptors, photographers, and other artists based in the Hamptons who curate local group shows with an emphasis on new and emerging artists,” explained Haffner. “Bonac Tonic formed in 2005 to reinvigorate the artscene". We'll talk about Grant, and the other founding members of Bonac Tonic, and some of the artists who passed through. There was an energy to Bonac Tonic, and what they brought to the east end art scene at the time was something special. We miss them!

Are you interested in urban housing affordability? Summary of the article titled A fresh look at contemporary perspectives on urban housing affordability from 2021 by Marietta E. A. Haffner and Kath Hulse, published in the International Journal of Urban Sciences. This is a great preparation to our next interview with Jennifer Borrero in episode 290 talking about how housing affordability can be achieved through real examples. Since we are investigating the future of cities, I thought it would be interesting to see what housing affordability issues are and how we can understand them better. This article presents the history and norms of housing affordability and highlights the shift from the physical to the policy side. Check out the article through this link. Abstract: The literature on housing affordability has grown rapidly since Hulchanski [1995, p. 489. The concept of housing affordability: six contemporary uses of the housing expenditure-to-income ratio. Housing Studies, 10(4), 471–491] declared that housing researchers should avoid using the term since it is not a robust concept and measurement often lacks validity. In the ensuing 24 years, however, scholars have continued to debate the definition and measurement of housing affordability as well as the prevalence and type of ‘housing affordability problems' in various countries. This paper is a think piece which takes a fresh look at housing affordability as a concept which has persisted despite considerable contestation and scepticism about its use. It provides a critical and multi-disciplinary assessment of housing affordability starting with early conceptualization of the nexus between economic principles and social norms about housing and living standards to a reworking of housing affordability in the twenty-first century as an urban issue affecting lower and middle-income households in cities, as a consequence of the financialization of housing and urban restructuring. It argues that the housing affordability concept has been repurposed such that the focus is less on understanding housing expenditures in contributing to poverty and disadvantage within the domain of social policy and more on the urban policy challenges of growing inequities in access to urban resources. The paper highlights the challenges for urban policy in adopting and adapting rather than rejecting a multi-dimensional concept of housing affordability and consequently the importance of new ways of measuring urban housing affordability. Dave Griffith (R-Jefferson City) joined us live on 939 the Eagle's "Wake Up Mid-Missouri", telling listeners that one of the big highlights from Wednesday's veto session was farewell speeches from lawmakers who are term-limited, have lost primaries or are retiring. The authors examined cardiac calcium mishandling and damage in the setting of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). Using a genetic mouse model of DMD crossed with a mouse that expresses a genetically encoded calcium indicator, Domeier and colleagues investigated changes in intracellular calcium handling in response to increased preload. The unexpected finding was that after the acute preload challenge, many of the cells were missing-in-action. What was going on with these missing cells? In this episode, Steve Haffner shares: The song that inspired him to quit his job and become a magician! Why he went in to IT in the first place. That he has always had a strong, creative drive. What mentalism is and how he incorporated it into his act. What inspired him to go from performing at trade shows into public speaking. Some of the different cognitive biases that we have and how a magician or marketing department can exploit them as well as how we can overcome them. What the "Lizard Brain" is and how primitive impulses still affect our thinking and decision making today. The single experience that made him almost quit his dream and the corresponding experience that caused him not to. Why he believes that having regrets is not necessarily a bad thing. That people should challenge their beliefs and be willing to change them when they do not line up with the evidence. What the allure of the status quo is and why we should not be afraid to fix something that is not currently broken. What outcome bias is and how it is not necessarily an accurate arbiter of whether a decision was good or not. What System One and System Two are with regards to our minds. How Magicians and Marketing departments use misdirection against us.

Synopsis When your instrument is nicknamed “the burping bedpost,” it's hard to get respect in refined circles. So it's understandable that the bassoon section of, say, a major London orchestra might indulge in a bit of day-dreaming in which a gang of hot-rodding motorcycling bassoonists blow into town and take over a concert hall. And guess what? That is EXACTLY the scenario of a piece written for Britain's Philharmonia Orchestra by the American composer Michael Daughtery. “Hell's Angels” is a concerto for bassoon quartet that received its premiere in London on today's date in 1999, with Daughtery commenting: “I find the bassoon to be an instrument with great expressive and timbral possibilities, ranging from low and raucous rumbling to plaintive high intensity.” Daugherty often takes inspiration from icons of American pop culture, so it's not surprising that he should choose “Hell's Angels” for inspiration. After all, he writes: “the bassoon is similar in size and shape to the drag pipes found on Harley Davidson motorcycles … When the noise-curbing mufflers are illegally removed from the drag pipes, they create a deafening roar. I have removed the traditional mufflers on the bassoon repertoire in order to compose [my] concerto for bassoon quartet and orchestra.
