Forget what you've been told about what's driving division, disengagement, and dysfunction. It's not woke and DEI. It's not remote work. It's not Gen Z or political affiliations. According to Dr. Zach Mercurio, it's something far more primal: the deep, unmet need to matter. In this gut-punch of an episode, Zach and host Ira S Wolfe rip into why belonging programs fall flat, expose the myth about soft skills, and reveal why making someone feel seen isn't a nice-to-have—it's survival. You'll never look at leadership, work, or human connection the same way again. Perks don't create a vibrant culture. They're distractions from the fact no one feels like they belong. Ping-pong tables and catered lunches won't fix your toxic culture. Start with making people feel like they matter.  If you give a damn about your people—this is required listening. How Tech's Growth Left the Midwest Behind: The Ripple Effect on Jobs, Education, and Politics

While tech is the fastest-growing sector in the US and the world, it mostly skipped the Midwest. But the shift didn't just impact jobs but educational attainment and politics too. This episode explores the fascinating junction of Main Street and Wall Street where we bring together insights from Gad Levanon, Chief Economist at Burning Glass Institute, along with our esteemed co-hosts, Ira S Wolfe, Mat Van Alystyne, and John Aidan Byrne. We delve into the perplexing political realignment in the Midwest, the likelihood of a recession, the influence of AI on traditional jobs, concerns about public debt, and even the future of democracy. Episode Highlights: The Midwestern Struggle: The decline in manufacturing has hit the Midwest hardest, undercutting economic stability and leading to a political shift towards the Republican Party. Gad's research highlights a dramatic drop in educational attainment, population, and economic development in the region. This decline has contributed to the shifting voter preferences we see today. It's a complex story with no straightforward solution, but localized efforts and proactive leadership might offer glimmers of hope. Recession Talks: Premature or Impending? Gad maintains a cautiously optimistic outlook despite fears of an impending recession. While economic indicators show some negative trends, he believes that a recession requires a clear shock, which he hasn't seen yet. Mat Van Alystne adds that recessions often come as surprises, challenging us to stay prepared and vigilant. Tech and the Workforce: Winners and Losers Our discussion brought light to the tectonic shifts in the tech industry. AI and automation are transforming job landscapes, creating winners (owners, executives) and losers (rank-and-file programmers). These changes remind us that adaptability is not just a buzzword; it's a necessity. Public Debt: A Growing Concern Gad Levanon raises the alarm on the mounting public debt in the United States. Unlike personal debt, public debt lacks a clear connection to daily life, making it easier to spiral out of control. Both Gad and Mat criticize the lack of balanced budgets and fiscal responsibility. With a shift towards populism, the need for sustainable economic policies is more urgent than ever. We hope this episode equips you with the insights to navigate through the corner of Main Street & Wall Street. Stay tuned; we've lined up future episodes that promise to keep you on the edge of your seat! About the Speakers Mat Van Alstyne: Co-Founder and Managing Partner of Odeon Capital Group, a leading full-service boutique broker-dealer to institutional clients. John/s newest ventures are two movie projects, one on the legendary life of a Wall Street CEO and scholar and the other on Norman Rockwell.   Special Guest: Gad Levanon is the Chief Economist of The Burning Glass Institute. Flexibility in the workplace is a hot topic, but 2024 Everywhere Work reports show a stark reality: only 25% of workers feel their work environment is highly flexible. We need to bridge this gap for a truly adaptable workforce. In this episode host Ira S Wolfe and Ivanti's CMO Melissa Puls peel back the layers of IT and security, and trust us, it's more challenging than you'd ever expect. We tackle the crippling silo effect, dig into the exponential growth of security vulnerabilities, and explore the intricate dance between CIOs, CISOs, and HR. It can feel like you're trying to thread a needle with one hand tied behind your back.  Here are seven insightful nuggets about IT, security, workplace flexibility, and employee experience in the future of work: 1. When IT and security team up, magic happens. Collaboration is key. Silos? Not so much. Keeping data and systems separate hampers both productivity and security. 2. Discovering and securing every connected device is like looking for a needle in a haystack. But boy, is it necessary! CIOs and CSOs need to collaborate, not compete. 3. Think of workplace security like a well-locked door; it must be secure but easy to use. Balancing strict security measures with practicality can save your company from headaches. 4. Employee experience isn't just a fluffy HR term. It translates directly to customer experience, and ultimately, your company's success. And surprise, surprise: IT and security have a huge impact on it. 5. Do you think digital employee experience doesn't matter? Many employees would rather leave a company with a lousy digital setup than stay—even if they love everything else. 6. Flexibility in the workplace is still a work in progress. Only 25% of workers feel their environment is highly flexible. 7. The future of work is here and now, and it's all about flexibility, security, and connection. This episode drives home the point that thriving in today's fast-paced world means embracing flexibility, working smarter, and fostering strong connections and cultures within our workplaces. So, stay agile, stay secure, and stay connected! Plus: The top 5 Things every small and medium business manager should know: The Future of Work is here now . Everywhere Work is here to stay Flexibility is key for the Employee Experience and Engagement. Everywhere work is about flexibility, not the place. Security is critical to make sure employees and customers are safe. Education and training is essential. Connection and Culture are more challenging in a hybrid environment but not impossible Employee Experience translates to Customer Experience --  and it is all about Customers and the Customer Journey. This premiere episode of “At the Corner of Main St. & Wall St. episode is a gripping reminder that when it comes to the economy, inflation, personal finances, and politics, we are in virgin territory. Staying informed and flexible is key and hosts Ira S Wolfe, Mat Van Alstyne, and John Aidan Byrne share a few game-changing insights on where we may be headed next. They are joined by this month's special guest Nathan Lewis, co-author of “Inflation.” Here are a few must-know takeaways about our economy, inflation, debt, and where we might be headed next: 1. **The Inflation Impact**: Inflation is hitting hard, and Americans are feeling it. Everything from your groceries to your gas tank is affected, and it's a top concern for everyone from Main Street to Wall Street. 2. **Debt Overload**: The American consumer is swimming in over $1 trillion of credit card debt—yikes! Combine that with the housing gridlock and border crisis, and you get a potent financial cocktail that's hard to swallow. 3. **Deficits Without Fixes**: Nathan Lewis points out that governments, including ours, are running bigger deficits but fixing zilch. It's like putting more holes in a sinking ship and wondering why we're taking on water. 4. **Treasury Troubles**: Rising treasury yields could spell trouble. There's chatter about fiscal dominance and even the looming specter of the US Treasury defaulting if no one's buying those bonds.  5. **Inflation and Politics**: Inflation is shaping up to be a big player in the next election cycle. Whether it's Trump's tariffs or Biden's relief acts, these policies are influencing everything from the value of the dollar to the cost of living. 6. **Gold as a Safety Net?**: With currency values wobbling, some experts are looking back at gold. Remember, it's been a fallback since ancient civilizations and could be the safe harbor we need amid the storm. 7. **Monetary Mayhem**: Leaving the gold standard in 1971 might've been the root of our currency's instability. It's like pulling the rug out from under the dollar, as Nathan Lewis reminds us. 8. **International Shifts**: The global scene is shifting with countries like China and Russia questioning the US dollar's dominance.  9. **The Future's Uncertain**: High levels of unpredictability surround what the Fed and central banks will do next. Navigating this complex maze requires keen insight and adaptability. Mat Van Alstyne: Co-Founder and Managing Partner of Odeon Capital Group, brings insights from the heart of Wall Street. Whether you're staring down the barrel of a job change, wrestling with the march of AI and automation, or simply seeking to thrive in our fast-paced world, this episode is your beacon. Here are eight tremendous takeaways you'll learn about the power of adaptability: “Future Shock” published over 50 years ago, warned us about the paralysis that comes with excessive change, and here we are, dealing with that reality as we look towards the future of employment. The tech tsunami is coming for sure. But remember, the 4th and 5th industrial revolutions are set to create more jobs than they wipe out. Ride the wave with adaptability, not get wiped out by it. The ability to adapt, or what we're calling the 'Adaptability Quotient,' will be an essential skill as we face technological changes that disrupt the job market. The greatest challenge for leaders in the future will be to manage not only their own adaptability but to nurture an environment that supports adaptability in their teams. Future-proof your psychology: Understand how acknowledging the Dunning-Kruger effect can lead to monumental personal growth. The mere thought of adaptability is scarier than the actual hustle of change. It's the boogeyman in the closet of our minds. The pandemic changed the way business is done forever. Once employees got a taste of working remotely and adjusted to a new lifestyle, there was little chance of getting workers back to the office on an everyday basis.  While more than 59% of workers are now more attracted to jobs that provide flexibility via remote work, nearly 6 out of 10 executives and business owners are pushing back and demanding workers return to the office. One common reason given by managers is that you can't create a great culture with a remote workforce and workplace. On today's show, we discuss the current labor shortage, and what we might expect moving forward. If there is a crystal ball for what the future of jobs, work, and the workplace look like, it lies in the head of Ira S. Wolfe. Ira has emerged as one of the top 5 Global Thought Leaders in the Future of Work and HR. a visionary thinker in what happens When the Shift Hits Your Plan and How to Thrive on the Never-Normal Journey. Key Takeaways: The labor shortage isn't going to end anytime soon. Why?We are experiencing a worldwide economic downturn. This is the first time since 1945 that the GDP has lowered without the unemployment conversely rising. Unemployment is still low.The population is decreasing. There are fewer people entering the workforce with the new generations. Between 1950-2020, more women and immigrants were entering the workforce to compensate for the population decrease. Now, Baby Boomers are also leaving the workforce. We are in a job full downturn, and it's not expected to change soon. What should employers consider during this time?Employees want choices in creating work/life balance. Employers will need to decide what type of culture they want for their business - remote / hybrid / on site. The burden of shortage is falling on remaining workers, and the stress is causing them to quit as well. Do you see the shortage driving companies to be more innovative?Yes, businesses may alter hours to only profitable times. Businesses will also find ways to automate tasks to be successful with fewer employees. Examples:Robots doing fast food ordering, food preparation, payment processing. Apps for content editing, both written words and video.Apps like Watson used by surgeons that use keywords against enormous amounts of medical journals to suggest treatment.Autonomous vehicles for individual use and also to carry passengers. What do employers and employees need to focus on for the future job market?EmployersEmbrace what a good employee experience looks like.  Talk to your employees and make a plan together. Do the employees feel like the managers have their back and care about them? Do they like their coworkers and the culture? Is the workspace safe? Can you say something when you need help or when you have a great idea? Are there ways to make the recruiting and onboarding experience better? EmployeesAdaptability - Many jobs will become automated. Being adaptable and resilient will mean you'll find a way to be valuable no matter what changes occur.Growth mindset - Be willing and motivated to try new things, make mistakes, and accept challenges.Mental flexibility - Have the ability to deal with misinformation and disinformation.Unlearn what doesn't work anymore Contact Ira WolfeWebsite: https://www.irawolfe.com/Book: Recruiting in the Age of GooglizationLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/irawolfe/Coaching: https://www.successperformancesolutions.com/aqplus-growth-mindset/

Tune in as Denis asks the questions about who their favorite leaders are and how leadership is changing today. In this episode: Fighting against the bureaucratic and hierarchical structure of organizations takes a lot of work. It entails considering diversity, inclusion, and equity, among many others. Ira discusses how COVID-19 exposed a lot of issues within businesses and how leadership is about helping people adapt to changes. Be prepared to accept change - it is constant and accelerating. The law of acceleration states that the pace of change doubles. Dr. Mrinalini Garv shares how his favorite leader taught her by example. It is not important for people to like you. What's important is that you are respected. Key Takeaways: Normal is a state of mind where you don't want any changes Leaders must teach humanity how to respond better to accelerating change Leadership goes beyond changing the business - it is about compassion and empathy Simple gestures may mean a lot - they can make you think Being respected is more important than being liked Tweetable Quotes: "The great leaders today are going to be the people who help humanity get through this [accelerated change] and not through handouts, but teaching them how to respond better to an accelerating rate of change.”  - Ira S Wolfe “It is not important to get people to like you. It is important, though, to get them to respect you. And as soon as they start respecting you, they are going to put you in a completely different league, and you will stop all the people-pleasing business.” - Dr. Mrinalini Garv Reach out to Denis: Email: denis@leadingchangepartners.com Website: http://www.leadingchangepartners.com/ (http://www.leadingchangepartners.com/)  Leadership Is Changing Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/LeadershipIsChanging/ (https://www.facebook.com/groups/LeadershipIsChanging/) Leadership is Changing LinkedIn Page: https://www.linkedin.com/company/leadership-is-changing-podcast/ (https://www.linkedin.com/company/leadership-is-changing-podcast/)

Wolfe is what he calls a “Millennial trapped in a Baby Boomer's body.” He's also one of the Top 100 HR Influencers for 2021.  He is the president of Poised for the Future Company, founder of Success Performance Solutions, a TEDx Speaker, Top 5 Global Thought Leader on Future of Work and HR, and host of Geeks Geezers Googlization podcast. His most recent book is Recruiting in the Age of Googlization, now in its 2nd edition. Dive in, and let's tackle a massive question: when are we going back to normal? On this episode: Ira gives us some insights into his background and journey into leadership, as well as what exactly makes him a “Millenial trapped in a Baby Boomer's body.”  Ira talks about his shift in thinking into the “Never Normal.” We are struggling with adaptability, and leaders will have double down on building cultures. It's ok that we're not going back to normal. Ira explains the incredible importance of shifting our definition of “normal.”  Ira shares his thoughts on the value of leaders who help others and adapt to the rapid changes we experience. Leaders need to provide their team with emotional safety, knowing that you have their back. To create resilience, you need to make a culture of letting go.  People are leaving toxic, meaningless workplaces in droves. Ira talks about building a “people first” organization as we navigate the accelerating change era.  Key Takeaways: There is so much wisdom we can pull from EVERY generation We are living in the “Never Normal”  History will remember the people who helped others  Leadership is about helping people adapt to the future You need to learn new ways of doing things and know when to let things go It's time for leaders to rise up and help people navigate the perpetual uncertainty Tweetable Quotes: “I'm going to try to live life to its fullest until I can't” - Ira S. Wolfe “We're not going to be able to slow down the change… but we can certainly become better at responding to and managing our response to change.” - Ira S. How these world-class athletes respond to untimely falls on the ice and aerial routines gone bad is really what separates the true champions from gifted athletes. Where have all the workers gone? That is the question nearly every employer is asking. So I invited Futurist David Houle to tell us! Houle believes the 2020s will be the most disruptive and transformative decade in history. Never-normal will be the norm and our perception of reality will be challenged. Making sense of life's unpredictable, fast-changing, and often incompatible events will make keeping up with the “shift” difficult. Millions of people are at risk of being left behind in what Houle describes as a “Decade of Cognitive Dissonance” (which also just happens to be the title of his newest book.) In the book, Houle suggests that we need to adopt the mindset “be like water" and why the metaphor "light at the end of the tunnel" is a dangerous one. Tune in to find out why living with cognitive dissonance will be our normal, and why COVID19 was just training wheels for the decade ahead.  In the 2nd segment, host Ira S Wolfe continues the conversation about adaptability and introduces 3 new webinars: July 23: Taming the Turnover Tsunami, Local Talent Pipelines. “When you help people take that first step, they become more confident. When they are more confident, then all of a sudden the world seems a little brighter and they can see the light at the end of the tunnel. ” Ira Wolfe The past year turned out to be very unconventional for majority of people with the work place being most affected. The outcomes of various events most especially the Covid-19 pandemic, altered the normal work routines of many if not all companies which led a large number of people moving to work remotely. The dilemma facing many leaders now is how they will move forward considering their new operating realities with regards to work locations. According to Ira Wolfe, the answer is very simple and involves managers building safe spaces for their people to work and thrive. Ira S Wolfe describes himself as a “Millennial trapped in a Baby Boomer body”. [2:37] With time it has gotten more complex. [3:00] From a company owner's perspective, it is terrifying that someone would last only three to five years, [3:19] If they can bring value to your organization and leave your organization in a better place according to the metrics, then that is okay. [3:37] In as much as companies complain that employees have no loyalty, it is them who train them to be that way. [6:22] I had a very successful practice in dentistry and when I left people wondered what I was going to do. [7:00] I developed transferable skills such as communicating with people, building teams, and critical thinking. [7:39] The thing that people overlook is about having transferable skills which are learnt through life experience. [9:22] There are no life career jobs and we can't treat people that way. [9:36] If you hire people and they contribute to what you have done and they leave your company in a better place, then that is the best you can ask for. [9:43] Very reliable research indicates that on average, two-thirds of all jobs maybe one-third automated. [11:52] The reality is one-third jobs that won't change are those that will be eliminated. [12:24] Every single person on the planet whether retail or frontline has to learn how to work with technology, because of the likelihood that most jobs are going to have a higher degree of automation. [12:48] Sixty five percent of remote workers want to stay remote, thirty three percent want to remain hybrid, and the remaining want to go back to the way things were. [15:33] Talking about managers and leaders, they were not very good before at ensuring employee engagement. [16: 20] According to Gallop, thirty percent or less of people were fully engaged at work while seventy percent were partially or fully disengaged. [16:32] If it wasn't good when they were under your nose where you could micro manage them, what is going to happen now that they are remote. [17:04] When you are at work you have to manage people, who are on site and those who are remote and it is always fluid. [18:06] It creates a huge opportunity where you can hire anyone around the world to fill those hard to fill jobs. [18:58] The down side is how you fill that safe place that they feel part of culture when they may never physically be in the same room to know their people. [19:06] Commercial Break [19:20] Everybody needs to become more adaptable where we are literally writing the rules as we go on. [21:07] We do know that there will be some form of hybrid workplace. [21:25] I spent my passion project last year and a half and it is on adaptability [22:10] I don't have a better Acronym to describe what 2020 was, Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous, and is the world we are going to live in going forward. So how do we manage that? [22:50] We work with something called the adaptability quotient [ 23:25] It identifies fifteen dimensions that impact someone's ability to change. Some are internal which refers to skills we need to have. [23:31] As leaders you have to create a company culture that makes people feel supported. [24:26] The most important that we can change include grit, resilience, mental flexibility, growth mindset and unlearning. [25:34] In order to have empathy, you need to step into other people's shoes and that calls on seeing the world from somebody else's point of view. [29:50] The five abilities are things that individuals are going to have to learn. [30:40] For leaders, the biggest challenge ahead is how do you help create a safe space? [30:58] Leaders have to help people build their confidence and gain the courage and by doing so, they will become more optimistic and hopeful about the future. [31:17] Don't let the shift hit your plans [34:15] ………………………………………………….
