Once our four heroes finally shake off their miasma-induced nap (aka the world's longest group power nap), it's back to business—finishing quests, preparing for impending doom, and trying to remember what they were doing before the nap in the first place. Meanwhile, in a totally unrelated act of royal mischief, we discover the Princess may have a slight case of kleptomania. She definitely didn't steal (but also definitely did) three vials of mysterious liquid from Junip's apothecary. Don't worry, im sure its fine.
For the 20th anniversary of the debut album by José González, we take a detailed look at how it was made. After getting his start playing in hardcore bands in Gothenburg, Sweden in the 1990s, José González began studying biochemistry at the University of Gothenburg. While he was a student, he continued playing in multiple bands while recording his solo material on the side. His band Junip was working with a local label called Kakafoni and they agreed to release a 7-inch of the solo songs he was recording on a 4-track. The “Hints” and “Deadweight on Velveteen” single found its way to Joakim Gävert, who was starting a new label called Imperial Recordings with Magnus Bohman. They signed González to a deal and released the Crosses EP in the spring of 2003. The full-length album, Veneer, followed in the fall of 2003. In this episode, José González describes taking a new approach with his solo work by playing classical guitar and embracing minimal arrangements. By recording in his small apartment with inexpensive equipment and pirated software, he describes how these limitations helped shaped his sound. In addition, González describes reaching a breaking point in his mental health during this time when he was overwhelmed with his studies, personal relationships, and a lack of sleep, which led to him being institutionalized before the album was completed. From switching to music as a relief from biochemistry to discovering Nick Drake and alternate tunings to overdriving cheap tubes for added drama to an impromptu cover of The Knife's “Heartbeats” that became a classic, we'll hear the stories around how the record came together.

José González is a Swedish singer-songwriter who rose to international prominence in 2003 with his debut album Veneer. This week, Dan leads us to our Season Five finale via a conversation with the tranquil-voiced José González. Born and based in Gothenburg, Sweden to Argentinian parents, González is an indie folk singer-songwriter known for his signature sound of classical guitar picking and soothing vocals. To date he has released four studio albums as a solo artist as well as two further albums with folk-rock band Junip. He has made several TV appearances, performing Late Night with Conan O'Brien twice, Later… with Jools Holland and Jimmy Kimmel Live. His cover of The Knife's “Heartbeats” was featured in an iconic commercial for Sony BRAVIA. On top of all this, he was in a PHD program for biochemistry prior to his music career taking off. Witches, you know how the pentacle has become Hollywood shorthand for evil, when it’s not? You know how people still think we’re suspect because, well, movies? Turns out it’s not just magickal folk who get worked over by Tinseltown. Even the greatest of Gods and Goddesses can get misrepresented. The Trojan Wars really begin with a golden apple, a disgruntled Chaos Goddess and a very strange beauty contest between Hera, Aphrodite and Athena. That. and the love of the most beautiful mortal woman in the world was behind the horror of this awful War, with its plagues, sacrifices, and terrible glory. The Greek Myth, through its exploration of Achilles, half man, half God, the formidable warrior driven to madness through an indescribable loss, gives us a story of redemption, and a battle that is as much between the Gods as it is between the Greeks and the Trojans. But what happens to the Gods when Hollywood gets its hands on mythic history? Well, essentially they get some things kind of right, and the rest… is a bit of a mess! Lucy does a deep dive into one of the biggest films of the noughties, discovering the differences between how the Greeks felt about fate, and the way this Hollywood blockbuster portrayed destiny, diminished the role of priestesses, sorely neglected the Gods, and changed the sexuality of one of the greatest warriors and demi-Gods ever. Because…that’s Hollywood. But don’t worry - this episode offers a whole lot about what the Gods and Goddesses did do, and why, when they chose to take sides in human affairs.Featuring music by Princess Nokia, Junip and Runfell, this episode also features Lucy reading from her new Oracle Card deck, Into the Lonely Woods. José González catches up with Kyle Meredith to talk about Local Valley, his first album since 2015's Vestiges & Claws. The Swedish singer-songwriter talks about effective altruism as a way to make the world a better place and how it fits in with the lyrics, being frustrated with “doomsday dudes,” and how a line like “we're all in this together” is both a statement and a plea. González also discusses incorporating Western African music into his style and covering his other band Junip's song "Line of Fire." We had the pleasure of interviewing Major Murphy over Zoom audio! Today, Major Murphy — Jacob Bullard (guitar, vocals), Jacki Warren (bass, vocals), Brian Voortman (drums), and Chad Houseman (guitar, keys, percussion) — share Access, their second album for Winspear. Waxahatchee's Katie Crutchfield says Access is “an album to blast at an unruly volume to soundtrack an experience one might have standing at that crossroads,” and it's a record that exudes melodic exhilaration and earnest feeling while tackling adult themes of parenting, accountability, and building a sustainable artistic life. Listen to and order Access here: http://smarturl.it/mm-access Recorded at Russian Recording in Bloomington, IN between late 2018 and early 2020 with Mike Bridavsky and Ben Lumsdaine, Access is a project built on Bullard's burgeoning songwriting prowess and a restless, childlike creative spirit informed by Bullard and Warren's newfound parenthood. In five years, Major Murphy has evolved from three jamming roommates into the four piece it is now. Bound by a love for bands from Wings to Junip, Bullard, Voortman and Warren plucked their band name out of an extraterrestrial themed book, and, with the help of Winspear, got off the ground releasing two home recorded EPs in 2015 and 2017. The band's debut LP No. 1 was soon to follow in 2018, and was praised for its “easy, gorgeous harmonies, shimmering production, and timeless subject matter” by Gorilla vs. Bear. Together, with the help of longtime collaborator but newly minted member, Chad Houseman, Access became the band's first attempt at a more deliberate and conceptual creation. We want to hear from you! Saurabh Mhatre talks about the simplicity behind deployable systems, the chaos of taking pictures, mindful photography, material science, social media, productivity tools, and more. Saurabh grew up and studied architecture in Mumbai. He holds a Master in Design Studies with a focus on technology from the Harvard Graduate School of Design, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he currently explores how flat deployable mechanisms can morph into three-dimensional shapes with minimal actuation, to enable ephemeral uses of mundane items and facilitate their storage and shipment, as part of his research at the Material Processes and Systems (MaP+S) Group. He enjoys working with people from different disciplines, ranging from biological engineering to material science, and works across multiple material scales, from the nano-scale of medical devices to large form-factor of deployable shelters. Saurabh also shares with us his love for photography, how he interacts with social media, and what productivity tools help him keep track of his work. You can find Saurabh on Facebook, his photos at @sm8928 on Instagram, and his most recent work at saurabhmhatre.com. Most people remember Swedish folk rock singer José González for the amazing covers he did in the mid-2000s. (Remember his incredible cover of “Heartbeats” by The Knife?) Lately José has been making music and touring with two of his high school friends under the name Junip. When I first met José in his tour van, I was a bit nervous. His answers were very succinct. Would I be able to get this Swede to open up? Of course! I even get José to talk about his days in the Swedish Metal scene. Listen to our chat. The crew at the BBG are hosting a Chili Pepper Fiesta featuring bands from various “chili loving nations” and chili-packed food from a myriad of different cuisines. Plus Jose Gonzalez of Junip called from Scandinavia to talk about eating on the road and his spicy food heat-tolerance-level. This episode was sponsored by Whole Foods Market.
