June 24, 1984 was Fred Swift's first day working for KUSI. Swift was originally hired as the Transmitter Supervisor, but is now KUSI's Chief Engineer. At the time, USIU, also known as United States International University owned the license to the transmitter signal, but did not have the capabilities or funds to put the station on the air. That's when KUSI's current owner, Mike McKinnon Sr., partnered with them, and got the station on the air. Eventually, USIU's financial situation worsened, and McKinnon Sr. bought them out. KUSI first went on the air in 1982, and started broadcasting news a few years after. Swift looks back on the beginning days of his career at KUSI, and how technology has changed, for better and worse, as KUSI continues broadcasting quality news to the San Diego community.
Bien-Aime (French for beloved) Baraza is a vocalist, songwriter and guitarist. His style of singing is soulful and his songwriting skills celebrated by many. And women inspire me. My thought process equates songs to women; to an extent I call our songs my women. Lazizi is the hot girl at the bar. Zosi is the good sweet girl who goes to church. Mama Papa and Soma Kijana are the voices of my mother. “While on stage, these hit singles are among my trophies. Some women like Wera, Subira, Mapacha, Awinja and Asubuhi are wife material–girls who knew me in the hood before the lights, camera and action. They remind me of Sauti Sol days before success and the magical struggle that our music has been. They are show for sacrifice and represent the road we've treaded.” Bien-Aime studied Journalism and Media Studies at the United States International University and graduated in 2011. They are the undisputed “goddesses” of their Southern California liberal arts college. The four women met as randomly assigned roommates, and despite their diverse backgrounds and interests, they have a bond that will last for decades. Tasha is the flirty theater arts major; Elizabeth, gifted with classic beauty and intelligence, majors in pre-law; Dawn is the intuitive daughter of a single Navajo mother, and an outstanding psychology student; and Miranda is an athletic, ultra-liberal journalism major. With distinct talents and trajectories, each young woman seems destined for a Charmed Life. But just before graduation, a student is found murdered. Suspicion falls in their midst, and destinies are changed forever. Death by Chaos is a clever, entertaining mystery from Renaii West, with complex female characters, colorful dialogue and enough surprises to keep readers guessing. The ensuing murder investigation threatens to derail the women's friendship — and possibly their futures. One of the four women becomes a person of interest and goes missing. And one of them knows much more than she's sharing. Over the next two decades, the case remains unsolved, and three of the women enjoy success in their respective careers. But one woman is still missing, and one remains haunted by the chaos of that ill-fated night. With an upcoming reunion on the horizon, and the arrival of a stranger on a motorcycle bringing even more turmoil, the time seems right to finally revisit the past, uncover the secrets and expose the truth. There's one major catch: there are those who wish the case to remain unsolved. Finding answers and the closure the four women so desperately need will require good acting, deception and maybe a little divine intervention. Walter B. Hoye II is both Founder and President of the Issues4Life Foundation, the California Civil Rights Foundation, Founder of the Frederick Douglass Foundation of California, co-founder and Executive Member of the National Black Pro-Life Coalition, a Board Member of The Morning Center (providing free full-service maternity care for women in urban and under-served areas), a published author (Leadership from the IN|SIDE Out), a board member of The Ruth Institute, a full-time pro-life activist, and a leadership consultant. This is an audio podcast of The Dr J Show. Full video episode is available here. As a young man Walter played football at Michigan State University, where he graduated with a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Sociology in 1980. On Tuesday, January 12th, 1982 Walter was licensed to preach the gospel by the Calvary Baptist Church in San Diego, California. Walter graduated from the United States International University, now Alliant International University, with a Master's degree in Business Administration in 1983. In 1984, God used the premature birth of his firstborn son (six months, 2.1 pounds) to teach Rev. Hoye that the preborn is a person, a living & breathing human being. On Sunday, April 23rd, 1989 Walter was ordained a Baptist preacher by Pastor Dr. S.M. Lockridge. From 1984 to 1987 Walter served as Minister of Christian Education at the St. John Missionary Baptist Church in Oceanside, California. From 1987 to 1991, Walter served as Assistant to the Pastor and Director of the Youth Department at the Greater Faith Baptist Church in Stockton, California. From 1991 to 2010, Walter served as the Executive Elder of the Progressive Missionary Baptist Church of Berkeley. In May of 2010, Walter resigned to work full-time in the Pro-Life movement. He was asked to join a group of pro-life sidewalk counselors, to pray and give out literature to women on their way to the entrance of an abortuary. His ministry blossomed so much that the abortuary lost a great deal of business, and they complained to the Oakland authorities, who literally created a law just to put Rev. Hoye in jail. Though in court Rev. Hoye and his attorney from Life Legal Defense proved both that Walter did absolutely nothing illegal and that the only witness against him blatantly lied, the pro-abortion judge made sure Rev. Hoye unjustly went to jail, which he did. The judge, in fact, sought to sentence Walter to four *years* in jail for standing on a public sidewalk, but could not because of a legal technicality. Walter leads the Oakland pro-life march, he competes in the San Francisco Marathon and catches an NFL, NBA, NHL and MLB game whenever he can. Mr. Samuel Nyiendo, Lecturer at the Multimedia University of Kenya and Riara University Mr. Samuel Nyiendo has over 30 years experience in computer-based training and courseware development. When he is not teaching, he is pursuing a PhD in Business Information Systems at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology. Nyiendo currently holds a Masters in Information Systems Technologies from the United States International University of Africa, Nairobi, Kenya. In this Lecture, hosted from Nairobi, Nyiendo discusses how Piazza has helped remedy some of the challenges facing instructors and students in Kenya where obstacles caused by economic, social, political and technological barriers have created a vast Digital Divide in education between the developing world and industrialized nations. Looking for ways to improve student engagement, Nyiendo first discovered Piazza while watching another lecturer on YouTube. Created with accessibility as a priority, Piazza is a free platform for instructors and students and is available to use on any device. In cases where there may be a shortage of technological or financial resources, including computers, internet bandwidth, or budget cuts, Piazza can be used on mobile devices, allowing students to connect with their instructors and classmates without any major barriers. Piazza’s accessibility allows Nyiendo to interact with his students outside class time, allowing students to engage with their coursework anywhere and anytime. With Piazza, Nyiendo is able to track a student’s ‘digital footprint’ and can therefore better address individual progress and needs. This is especially important in class environments where a gap in computer skills exists between groups of students. Since adopting Piazza, Nyiendo has received significant positive feedback from students and maintains high student enrollment and retention in his courses. Nyiendo hopes his learnings on using Piazza to bridge the digital divide in Kenya can be applied across the African continent, and to other areas that struggle to make education accessible for all. Even in the developed world, many of the same challenges he faces are present: budget cuts to education initiatives, distance learners, and students who are disengaged in their classes because of social or economic reasons. Nyiendo concludes his lecture with the idea to use Piazza as a forum to create a global community of teachers and learners to share best practices and methodologies for making education accessible for all.
