Singer, songwriter, and guitarist Freddie Salem grew up in the Akron Ohio area listening to all styles of music as a kid. He moved to Los Angeles at the age of 18 with his Gibson Les Paul and five hundred dollars, and 6 months later, having almost given up on the dream of being in the music business, he auditioned for the psychedelic soul band “The Chambers Brothers”, and from that moment on, his multi-decade musical journey began. After leaving the band, he spent time in the Southern California recording studio system as what he called a “creative session player” in those famous Los Angeles and Hollywood studios, and meeting the legendary Tommy Tedesco from “The Wrecking Crew” along the way, while honing his craft. While touring with Jesse Colin Young and Roberta Flack, The Outlaws management reached out to Freddie, asking if he'd be interested in meeting the members of the band. A year after that, he joined the band as their 3rd guitarist / vocalist on stage, and in the studio. Freddie helped shape their sound from 1977 thru 1983, by turning the band from a Country Rock feel, to a hard Southern Rock sound that helped create larger audiences. The band went on to perform and tour with such major acts as The Grateful Dead, Boston, and Black Sabbath, selling over 12 million records in the process. Freddie, in addition to still performing and recording new music these days, is also working on music scores for such films as Top Gun, Dunkirk, and numerous other film scores. He was inducted into the “Rock Godz Hall of Fame” in 2016. Things We Discussed mindset coaching - It means specifically for musicians to move from or transcend being a struggling artist to being an entrepreneur, what I call a musicpreneur, to go from struggling artist mindset to you are a business owner that's making profit, that can scale, that can grow. And the more you scale and grow and profit, the more you can touch and inspire all these people you've been wanting to reach, like, the more freedom that you have to do it because you're no longer struggling, but maybe you're thriving. Tanya Winch sometimes feels she's living a double life. By day, she is an Investment Advisor at Winch Financial, a full-service fiduciary advisory based in her home state of Wisconsin. By night, she is a vocal coach, guitar instructor, and live musician performing with two bands, Dirty Mercy Band (original music) and the Sarah McSweeney Trio. Tanya began playing violin at age 5, taking lessons on many additional instruments throughout her youth – piano, clarinet, tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone. Music and dance have always played a large part in making life exciting. Tanya enjoyed years of the independent musician experience while in Los Angeles, where she had the chance to sing back-up vocals on the Tonight Show, take home LA Music Awards and study songwriting with Grammy winners. Looking for a more balanced life, she moved to Austin in 2006, where she started teaching songwriting and vocals with GirlGuitarAustin.com, leading to private coaching in voice, guitar, piano, and songwriting. Tanya believes that a huge benefit of studying music is that it can teach tenacity and focus through solo practice. And yet, music is communal; making music with others can lift you from loneliness and fatigue to sharing inspiration and joy. Tanya believes that “music is a tread that connects us all”. Just her energy made my day better! We also were able to listen to Tanya's song, Cupid Gave Me Courage. In late October I was enjoying craft beer at one of my favorite watering holes with some of my favorite people. This was at Kool Keg in Arlington Texas, next door to the very place that I met my wife of 23 years. Recent podcast guests Chris Raspante (episode 2) and Neil Schnell (episode 8) would be joining me. Chris and Neil did indeed join the party, accompanied by singer songwriter Lannie Flowers. The last time I'd seen Lannie was in 2013, when his Lannie Flowers Band performed at Hotel Utah in San Francisco for the International Pop Overthrow Festival. His band was an amazing wall of sound that night. I thought we were meeting for the first time that night, but quickly realized that we both grew up and played in the music ecosystem of Dallas-Fort Worth. We'd probably met years before. Lannie sees his music as just rock & roll with harmonies Lannie has been awarded 'Record of the Year', 'Rock Artist of the Year', 'Breakthrough Video of the Year', and 'Social Media Artist of the Year' by the LA Music Awards. He's helped keep the power pop genre alive in the process. We began our interview with Lannie's ties to the power pop and his thoughts on the state of the genre. He says it was all quite accidental that he ended up within the power pop genre, adding that these are simply the people who took to his music. Lannie sees his music as just rock & roll with harmonies, and recalls that it was his album The Same Old Story that power pop fans first bought. Singer/Songwriter, John Enghauser, has been on the original music scene since the mid 90's. Beginning with his band Jamawokee, a high octane 4-piece funk rock project which debuted in Massachusetts, John began honing his songwriting and frontman skills. The band released its first recording self-titled "Jamawokee" in 1996. In the late 90's, John fronted his own original group, Jeng, where he wrote all of the material and whose potent live show piqued the interest of record labels such as Columbia and Virgin Records. John released his second album "Larium Dream" which was a compilation of Jeng songs he'd written during his time with the band. It was around this time that John also served as Music Director and contributing songwriter on the indie films "Urban Relics" and "When it Rains". The "Urban Relics" Soundtrack would mark John's 3rd official release to date. In 2000, Enghauser ventured westward where he landed in California. After several musical stints in San Francisco and Los Angeles, John has settled in the bay area where he's just completed his long anticipated fourth release "Lost In The Pages". In addition to all vocals, John performs guitar, bass and keyboards on the CD. Currently, John's new band is performing and promoting "Lost in the Pages" live while the CD is being played in 13 countries worldwide including England, Australia, Germany, France, New Zealand, Canada and The U.S.A. "Lost in the Pages" has already received critical acclaim by being nominated by LA Music Awards as "Best Album" in two categories.
Listen to our interview with Celeste Kim, whom you may also know from local L.A. Powerpop/Punk band Underwater City People, and her Producers Nathan Jenkins and Taylor Martyr (both of Action Go Now). With a new EP that debuted January 15th, Kim is ready to make her mark in this new world of music that she has always been a fan of and she joins us in studio to discuss her shiny super-new project Sparkalize! Tracks by Jeff the Brotherhood ("Bone Jam"),Lykke Li, Foster the People ("Pumped Up Kicks), Cloud Control ("Ghost Story"), and The Bees ("Winter Rose") were played during this episode as well as "Lucky Charm," "Belong", "Romance Not War," and "Party Girl" (Title Track) all tracks from the Sparkalize Party Girl EP. Here is a little more information on this new project: Sparkalize is a new electro-pop project via singer/songwriter Celeste Kim. Emerging from the Kiss or Kill LA underground rock and roll scene with indie pop punk band Underwater City People, she returns to her first crush: dance music. As a minor, getting into dance clubs and raves by way of fake id’s, tons of makeup, and stilleto heels helped her get her fix. The intoxication of the bass on the floor and the floating synths has had her hooked ever since. Sparkalize is her love affair.Celeste has toured as keyboardist and as a back up singer with major artists such as Savage Garden, Coolio, and Rebekah Del Rio performing on stages all over the world, as well as on the Tonight show.Recently she sang and played bass with 3 piece indie punk/rock group Underwater City People which allowed her to tour the US, gain national exposure on prime time TV shows and win an award for 'Best Pop Single' at the LA Music Awards. Now, longing to focus on her love of dance music, Celeste has teamed up with producers Nathan Jenkins and Taylor Martyr (Action Go Now) and Jonathan Paul (redCola, Obtain) to record her debut solo EP “Sparkalize.”
