For todays episode we are speaking with Kate McAnergney of Matri Yoga. Kate has been teaching yoga for 18 years and she and Jo have known each other since the late 90s. We'll hear some of their reminiscing about that time, as well as Kate's training at Sivananda Ashram in Kerala, South India in 2004. We'll also hear about her time with Paul Wooden at the Gertrude Street Yoga Studio and with Anahata Giri. Kate specialises in yoga and mindfulness-based practices to support women through pregnancy and postpartum, she is also training to become a doula. We were excited to talk to her as we know that a pregnant person unexpectedly arriving in class can actually make a lot of teachers anxious, especially if it wasn't a big part of their teacher training. Kate has some great suggestions about practices that work well in a group classes, skillful use of language including navigating corporate settings where the participant wants to keep their pregnancy private. Kate also shares some of the wonderful aspects of teaching specialised classes, focusing on this unique time in life as well as insights that would be useful for teachers of all styles. Podcast Intro: Durga Leela (a spiritual name) is a person in long-term recovery, a certified Ayurveda Practitioner, yoga teacher, and yoga therapist (IAYT certified) from the UK and now based in the US. She has shared Yoga as a Recovery Pathway in several Recovery Conferences over the last 20 years. She has also served as the Director of the Ayurveda Programs at the Sivananda Ashram in California since 2003 and is a professional member of the National Ayurvedic Medical Association (NAMA). In this episode, she shares her journey of healing and recovery from addiction. She also talks about the issues of Health Care regarding addiction, how she used Yoga to heal from alcoholism, and the emotional and mental health issues surrounding addiction. Personal story being a child of an alcoholic, becoming alcoholic myself in my teens, finding yoga in my mid-20s, a few suicide attempts, and losing my mother to alcoholism when I was 32 years old. Shortly after, I was fired from a job I was headhunted into. Then I “did a geographic”— moving from London to Lake Tahoe to take a year off and sort myself out. But “wherever you go, there you are,” and after nine months in the United States, my new life was in shambles. I once again felt desperate, but this time I took myself to a meeting of AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) 18 months sober, allopathic medical professionals offered me antidepressants for their diagnosis of clinical depression Book Yoga of Recovery, Integrating Yoga and Ayurveda with Modern Recovery Tools for Addiction - YoR works with people who have a sex addiction, eating disorders, codependents with no substance abuse, and others where substance abuse is present but it is not the primary presenting issue. I work with people 16–84 years old; those who are members of 12-step programs and those who are not. We offer help to those who want to come off the pharmaceuticals they have been prescribed but find they are now dependent on them. What you'll get out of tuning in: We talk about the roots of the addictive behaviors: the main causative factor is the ego, the idea of having disconnection from spirit, disconnection from life. How Ayurveda is a foundational behavioral health care system that can help people thrive in long-term (emotional) sobriety spread addiction - it's not just about alcohol and drugs! addiction is treated by the acute care model but needs a continuum of care from recovery-oriented systems of care - a chronic care model - and overall CARE rather than CURE which tends to be mainly at the level of pharmaceuticals and surgery - but this does not work so well for problems of addiction article: Ayurveda Journal of Health I truly believe Ayurveda is the best system of behavioral health care for all modern chronic diseases. sobriety, service, and fellowship (the three pillars of 12-step principles) Addiction is a bio-pscyhosocial-emotional-cultural-economic-political, etc. “character defects” that underlie all addictions—the one that is most ubiquitous being our tendency toward codependency—our ability to see in the other what is wrong but not be able to see or deal with it in ourselves “Svastha”— and addiction UT and “Svastha” This was very interesting to me as it fits with what I'd been told in AA—that addiction was a “spiritual malady” and I was “spiritually sick.” Ayurveda describes all diseases as “forgetting our true nature is spirit.” Dr. Harikrishnan, Medical Director of Vaidyagram Ayurvedic Clinic in Coimbatore, India, states, "Addiction arises when we lose the purpose of our life. Vedic literature tells us we only get a human birth after several thousand other lives. The purpose of human life is to evolve, to go to a further level. When you have a bigger purpose, this guides you better in how to live each day. PK and recovery to reset cellularly. Dr. Harikrishnan, “We recommend cleansing the body through PanchaKarma-this eliminates the toxins and allows you a break from the circumstances-time away to cleanse and calm down, introduce new practices, change your lifestyle, and feel the effects of the new habits. It takes three months for food to go to the seventh tissue; within three months, our body is completely changed. Hence it is ideal for spending a minimum of six weeks to three months in a staged recovery process.” YoR offers Ayurvedic Pancha karma retreats in India. Out-of-pocket spending vs. what is covered by gov't or insurance. The first stage is the deep cleanse; the second stage is learning both the principles and tools of Yoga and Ayurveda to help us make better decisions, and the third stage gives time to offer service to the others-the best way to get out of self. This increases confidence and self-esteem and allows us to share the gifts of our recovery with others. We then go back to live our lives knowing that we have a purpose, feeling calmer and stronger, knowing our capacity, pacifying Vata by eating properly and applying oil daily. It was the spring of 2013 when Luca Sonzogni started on a really difficult personal path that transformed his life completely. Luca had been in London for well over a decade working in finance and the corporate world, a very fast paced and demanding lifestyle that in the long run proved to be unsustainable. Shortly after leaving, he embarked on a soul searching journey to Brazil, Nepal, India and eventually arrived at the Yoga Village of Koh Phangan. Luca touched the bottom then and climbing up involved completing studies in Nutrition at the College of Naturopathic Medicine in London, becoming a Yoga Teacher at the Sivananda Ashram in Madurai, India and ultimately profoundly changing his value system and lifestyle. Since September 2016, he has been living in Srithanu, Koh Phangan, where a healthy living community of internationals share the natural beauty of this tropical island, the many yoga schools, workshops, events, gatherings, fresh food and wholesome restaurants. It is a perfect place where to find self-development and healing, sun, peace and connection. Luca set up a nutritional therapy practice online and worked as Detox Manger for specialist detox centres in Koh Samui. There he had the wonderful gift of witnessing first hand, over and over, the healing power of fasting. Eventually this led to the setting up of the Smiley Detox, a community fasting detox, in Koh Phangan and online. People loved the experience and that prompted him to start the Smiley Retreat, to give everyone the opportunity of a flexible detox and wellness experience, in a truly unique place. There are a million ways to meditate, yet we often think it needs to be perfected in a specific way. What is the truth about meditation and is it only effective if we go about it in one particular way? In this episode I chat with my friend Mahesh to investigate these questions. As the founder and CEO of Heal, a personal, immersive, sacred sound meditation space, and a yoga and meditation teacher, Mahesh knows a few things about building a meditation practice. It is his ability to enable self-introspection and weave the teachings of Non-duality and Vedanta that enables him to teach others how to build an inner awareness and understand and honor the true nature of your consciousness and divinity. Mahesh shares tips and insights with us around meditation, understanding the chakra system, non-duality, and the benefits of sound healing.Mahesh had his first major introspective breakthrough meditating on the Vivekananda rock in the southern tip of India while on a pilgrimage to India back in 2004. Since then he has served at the Sivananda Ashram in Grass Valley, CA and deepened his yoga and Advaita Vedanta meditation practice at various ashrams in India and the US. He teaches the integration of bhakti yoga, karma yoga, and raja yoga as it is intended to be taught in the ancient teachings of the Patanjali yoga sutras and inthe ancient scriptures of the Upanishads. He currently teaches Vedantic, mindful, and visualization meditation at the Samadhi Yoga Gruha in San Jose, CA. Pablo Narayana was born in Mexico City in 1985. He studied International Business at Universidad Panamericana, as he was afraid to follow his heart and study a humanistic career which was what he really wanted. He thought it was his duty to make money and wear a tie and jacket every single day. In 2008 he finished university and a big change in his life made his approach to photography as a career. In 2011 he took a Yoga class and his life started to change (again), never thinking he would become a yoga teacher he went to a Sivananda Ashram to deepen his own practice. He spent over 3 years in Ashrams to learn from his great teachers. Part of his practice is sharing what he has learned. He has been sober since 2010 and puts all the possible time into working with other addicts.Pablo's recent project is Sadhana Now. I’m at currently at the edge of what my mind and body knows, the edge of grief, the edge of acceptance, surrender and realizing how I can show up better in life. As Rumi says, “The wound is the place the light enters you.” This week I invite you to join me into this episode with my very special guest: Jase Cannon. I sit down to talk with her about the process of showing up for yourself and for others, how our struggles and traumas can lead to become the fuel to reborn into something new. Jase was born Jason, and came out as a woman in the summer of 2015 during a karma yoga retreat at the Sivananda Ashram. Through producing short documentaries about her work and speaking publicly at events, on television, and publishing multimedia accounts of her journey, Jase has cast a wide net in the worlds of wellness, philanthropy, gender studies to bring these elements together and create a powerful platform for ever greater self-expression for all. I can't be more grateful to connect with her. Today’s episode of Wonder Your Way to Brilliant is quite special. I recently spent a week on retreat at the Sivananda Ashram and Yoga Ranch in the Catskills, NY. It was my first time there and I had no idea what to expect. As grace would have it, it was one of the most wonderful experiences of my life and I had the good fortune of being enrolled in a class called: From Asana to Stillness with Arjuna, my teacher. Arjuna, a 40+ year practitioner of yoga and 37-year veteran teacher with Sivananda agreed to join me to talk about this month’s Niyama, Saucha or purity. Enjoy this special treat, the opportunity to learn from a true spiritual teacher and to explore an answer to this question, “What is the true purpose of our lives?”.
Meet Linda Tate, who teaches conscious wealth management. What the heck is that? I didn’t know either, so that’s why I had to have her on the show to learn how our mindset affects our wealth and reflects our worth. She has always been passionate about the Wellness world and believes that Wellbeing is not just about food, fitness and mindfulness, but also includes your consciousness about money and your relationship to it. Linda left a dream job as VP at Morgan Stanley to transition into Holistic nutrition and wellness earning her yoga training at Sivananda Ashram, becoming a Plant based chef and an Integrative health coach studying under Tony Robbins. She also is a co-host on Rise to Thrive podcast, but her main passion is helping people create consciousness about holistic wealth management. Today on Soul School with Audrey, Linda shares how you can: Become aware of your subconscious limited beliefs about money and your worth Rewrite the story about expansion of wealth and the possibilities around money Take practical steps to create a Conscious portfolio and manage your finance so it’s in alignment with your life values For many of us, money can be an uncomfortable topic to talk about. There’s a lot of scarcity, shame and judgment around this topic. Hopefully today, our conversation helps you expand your thinking about the possibilities around wealth, your worth and the mindfulness of money. How has this topic changed your thinking? Let me know on my blog or on instagram!
Jivasu’s (Pradeep Kumar) teachings are called Naturality. Naturality is to ‘to live according to our nature’ and ‘walk our own path’. The core of Jivasu’s teachings is about the fear of death (and life) and the emergence of the ego in response to that fear. The ego helps us to escape the fear of death and promises us an illusory immortality. This illusory immortality is needed during the early stages of life but we must eventually go beyond the ego in order to experience freedom from fear. Born in 1956, Jivasu was trained as a pediatrician in India. He and his wife, Karen (his teacher) served in the remote villages of Uttarakhand Himalayas for thirteen years. While living at Sivananda Ashram in Rishikesh, India, he experienced his first awakening, which came to full fruition twelve years later in an experience of ‘wholeness’ and ‘freedom from the psychological fear of the death.’ Eventually the process culminated in the realization that death is an illusion. The mind and body die but consciousness is immortal. Currently, he is teaching courses about Naturality (Sahajta) and the fear of death and life in Canada, India, Ireland, Barbados and Dominica. He also teaches acupuncture courses for the Contemporary Acupuncture Program at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. He conceived Expansiveness Meditation (Braham dhyan) and the Breath of Dissolution (Kalajayi pranayam), two elements of the Naturality teachings. He also teaches that all spiritual experiences have a biological basis. When the brain is cleared of its memories and emotional scars, it will connect to and clearly reflect the universe within and around us. Jivasu is the author of many books including: Meditation: A Path of Relaxation, Awareness and Expansion of Awareness, From Death to Immortality, Naturality, Science of Naturality, and Offerings in Longing and Love. Listen as Jivasu and I talk about: How a 5 year stay at a Hindu monastery helped him to overcome his fear of dying How Fear prevents you from discovering your purpose Why having a healthy identity is essential to discovering yourself How to know your natural personality by examining your body and asking certain questions The stages of enlightenment that come from Naturality The feelings you get from living out your purpose within your true nature How each of us must open our own, unique door to fully explore one's Naturality and purpose Why religious, group settings prevent one from fully understanding their purpose How his Eastern and Western cultural help him to discover his Naturality Why he has decided to be a family man instead of a monk Thoughts on good teaching Why he doesn't care about a following How to educate children in today's culture Why one should take the path of least resistence to discover Purpose Why yoga and meditation are necessary tools to get started in Naturality Why one no longer needs yoga and meditation once they are living their Naturality The science of yoga, meditation, and Naturality Why science is the universal language of the world How to get involved in Jivasu's upcoming immersive, Naturality courses around the world Listen as Jivasu leads a guided Inner Light meditation to conclude the episode --------------Resources Mentioned: --------------------- The Rise of Superman - Steven Kotler The Denial of Death - Ernest Becker Strange Order of Things -Antonio Demassio A Brief History of Everything - Ken Wilbur Finding Your True Personal Nature Questionaire - developed by Jivasu Find Naturality Programs around the world, contact Jivasu, and join the movement @ http://www.naturalitypath.com/ Join our purpose seeking podcast community at...
