Drink it or bin it: That phrase should have become history this summer at all U.K. airports. But it's set to persist for at least another year after the British government said it will grant extensions to several large U.K. airports unable to meet the June 1 deadline to fully install new scanning technology. The airports include London's two biggest, Heathrow and Gatwick. The new scanners use computed tomography, commonly known as a CT scan, to produce clearer images. They are being rolled out globally, including in the U.S. and across Europe, and will allow passengers to go through security with 2 liters (70 ounces) of liquid in their hand luggage—rather than the current paltry 100 milliliters (3.5 ounces). They will also mean laptops and tablets won't need to be removed from bags—saving even more time. The restrictions were introduced around the world in 2006 following a foiled terror plot to blow up planes flying from London to the U.S. with homemade liquid bombs. They were not expected to be in place for 18 years and have been cited as one of, if not, the biggest cause of delays at airport security checks. A deadline for the new technology to be in place at U.K. airports had originally been set for December 2022 but that was delayed to this summer as a result of the huge disruption caused by the coronavirus pandemic. The new deadline comes after airports reported that they were struggling to install the scanners ahead of the busy summer holiday period, largely due to supply chain delays and construction difficulties caused by the weight of the machines. The Department for Transport said the extensions would be granted on a case-by-case basis and that it was exploring how financial penalties could be imposed for further non-compliance. It did not provide a breakdown of the situation for each airport, citing security concerns, but said that by the start of June about half of passengers flying from U.K. airports will be processed by the new scanners. London City Airport, a popular short-haul airport, has already successfully introduced the new scanners, as has Teesside Airport in the northeast of England. This article was provided by The Associated Press.

How can you be an activist in a world of crisis? In this episode Amisha talks to Tamsin Omond, a communications and campaigns strategist, inspirational speaker and author. Tamsin has consistently shifted public conversation on the climate and ecological emergency. They have organised a number of high profile protests, co-founded a Suffragette inspired environmental campaign - Climate Rush, coordinated Save England's Forests coalition, founded a CIC - The Momentum Project - that mobilises the community surrounding London City Airport, led global corporate campaigns as Head of Global Campaigns at Lush Cosmetics and been a founding member of Extinction Rebellion. They are also active in queer uprising; a theatre maker and the author of two books - ‘RUSH! The Making of a Climate Activist' and ‘Do Earth: Healing Strategies for Humankind.' Amisha and Tamsin speak about climate activism and how environmental movements have changed over the past decade bringing new demographics into taking radical action on climate. Tamsin shares their ingenious strategical approaches mobilising communities in impactful environmental campaigns. They reveal their collaborative methods of addressing vast crisis and injustices impacting our global communities. They talk about the trauma that exists in movement spaces due to overexertion and how activists can grow sustainable movements by prioritising living a balanced life. Tamsin reveals the intimate and public unfolding of their trans non-binary identity in a transphobic culture. They emphasise the importance of connecting with supportive community when facing indoctrinations and impermeable walls of society when we live with invisible identities. They share their alignment with their true identity and the liberation, joy and sense of belonging it gifted them. We learn that kindred community is an essential ingredient for our future survival. Tamsin recommends that making connections, talking to people on our doorsteps and growing friendships with someone unexpected can shape trusted networks that increases our resilience and possibilities for growing self-sustaining community strategies. OK, this trip to London didn't go quite as planned... this episode has been edited in London City Airport while the Til Dice gang awaits the release of the Mailer Daemon from a crime he absolutely definitely did commit. Still, we recorded some stuff beforehand that we can share with you, including this World Building discussion on the topic of cities. They are an integral part of our real life and also our fiction - so here's some tips to help you design cities that are hopefully as worthy of adventure as Ankh-Morpork, Lankhmar, Greyhawk and... Aberdeen? Along the way are all the references you can expect from a serious RPG podcast - you know, stuff like Hachikō and licensed brothels and why you need strong drill bits to put a curtain rail up in a Glasgow house. Then our roadshow episode gets even more on the road as we share with you our London Travelogue. We give you our thoughts from some parts of the city that may be of interest to our listeners. This includes discussing some of the local geek and gaming shops like Leisure Games and Orc's Nest, but also some of the other sights that we think of as interesting or inspiring. We aren't doing it alone either - Tuppy shares her thoughts on which department store has the worst decor, the Mailer Daemon recalls the best thing Aleister Crowley ever did, and Twike is too busy freaking out about London problems to tell us about someone who has been following us on all our socials. On top of that you've got references to art of both the classy and non-classy variety, a tirade about the opening hours of chocolate shops on bank holidays, some political commentary from Tuppy on Border Force, the appearance of a strangely familiar sounding voice behind a till, and even a little cut back to Scotland to see what the team at Shoved Granny Games are working on... and what it doesn't have any of.Contact us by email on tildicepodcast@gmail.comWe can be found on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram under @tildicepodcastOur theme music is Funny Adventures by WinnieTheMoogLink: https://filmmusic.io/song/6048-funny-adventuresLicense: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/Our logo is by Neil Slorance - check out his work on Twitter under @neilslorance or Facebook as "Art by Neil Slorance"Support the show (https://ko-fi.com/tildicepodcast)Support the Show.
Since dropping banners against Heathrow Airport's third runway from the roof of the Houses of Parliament, Tamsin has consistently shifted public conversation on the climate and ecological emergency. They have organised a number of high profile protests, co-founded a Suffragette inspired environmental campaign - Climate Rush, coordinated (the successful) Save England's Forests coalition, founded a CIC - The Momentum Project - that mobilises the community surrounding London City Airport, led global corporate campaigns as Head of Global Campaigns at Lush Cosmetics and been a founding member of Extinction Rebellion. In 2021 Tamsin stood for co-leadership of the Green Party of England and Wales. They are also active in queer uprising; a theatre maker and the author of two books - RUSH! The Making of a Climate Activist and Do Earth: Healing Strategies for Humankind. In this episode, we explore the nature of activism and how it is evolving; how to create community from the ground up, based on Tamsin's experiences in East London, amongst others, and how we can shape a world where the transactional, zero-sum nature of our current system is no longer the driving force. Loser The British Airways he flight on Monday seemed to go perfectly well, until passengers realized that their plane had landed in both the wrong city and the wrong country. The British Airways flight from London City Airport was supposed to head to Duesseldorf, Germany, but ended up in Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. The airline said Monday the problem started when an incorrect flight plan was filed by WDL Aviation, which operated the flight on behalf of British Airways. Officials say the pilot followed the flight plan for Edinburgh, and that air traffic control officials also were following the same flight plan and saw nothing amiss. WDL aviation said it was trying to determine the cause of the “obviously unfortunate mix-up.” The flight was refueled and set off again, this time directly to Duesseldorf.
