THIS WEEK'S INTERVIEW If you need inspiration, are a coach of a gymnast who doesn’t quite get it, or need New Year’s resolution help, this is the episode for you. Chris Brooks has been through all the things and his message is very powerful. From the great Texas gymnastics tradition, he overcame personal tragedy and a horrific injury to make the Rio Olympic team at age 29. He had grip lock as a junior, but recovered and won an NCAA Championship at Oklahoma. While in college, his father, who got him into gymnastics and was a gymnast himself, was killed in a car accident. Chris was named Olympic team alternate in 2012. Then he made the all-around final at the Rio Olympic Games just a few months before his 30th birthday. We discuss: The full Cheeseburgers on Horse story The famous hug between John Orozco and Chris Brooks after being named to the 2016 Olympic Team. How he peaked and gave up excuses to finally make the Olympic team. Is the U.S. men's team really not doing well or is it actually improving? Was the judging fair in Rio? What does he think of the new changes to the Code of Points? His grip lock accident. (Article on preventing grip lock) Cheering hard: Did he ever get in trouble for being too loud? What was it like being coached by Olympic Champion, Rustom Sharipov? What to do about Winter Cup? Does he dislike being objectified (by the screaming gym mom's at Winter Cup)? The 2015 floor faceplant. Performing in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. His future plans. IN THE NEWS On Day Two of the Rio Olympic Event Finals: Beam, Rings and Men's Vault hosts Spencer, Uncle Tim and Jessica chat about: We hit ONE MILLION DOWNLOADS YESTERDAY!!! THANK YOU! Full recap of each event final details, scores, and moments we loved from: Balance Beam Final: Sanne Wevers, the 24 year-old DJ Spindarella'd her way the title, Olympic Champion. Smart gymnastics and past teams who stood united against an abusive head coach, created a beautiful system where smart, elegant gymnastics has flourish. Laurie Hernandez had a higher E score with only a little misstep on her dismount but couldn't match Sanne's innovation and big Dutch D. Simone Biles now eclipses Shannon Miller's record with yet another Olympic medal on beam. Grabbing the beam to prevent a fall is a .5 deduction. Catalina Ponor wore the greatest leotard of all time. Yes, you can wear a short sleeved leotard and have teammates as coaches on the floor for finals. Men'sVault Final: Was this the ugliest form we've ever seen in an Olympic final or just an example of the problems with the vault code? Ri Se Gwan, Denis Abliazin, Kenzo Shirai medaled , we explain the tie breaking procedure for vault. Marian Dragulescu lost the tie breaker but thankfully wasn't deducted for doing gymnastics, "practicing" on the podium. Igor Radivilov will have the handspring triple front named after him and we now hope that no one ever tries that vault again. Rings: Jessica and Spencer basically fell asleep because it's the most boring even in the history of gymnastics but Uncle Tim does a good job of trying to make us appreciate it. Our favorite and least favorite not-gymnastics moments: Sanne Wever's D score notebook Chris Books screams for Simone and Laurie. Everyone needs to calm down about the US women's team's non-gymnastics behavior. It's sexism. Why is Steve Penny still at the Olympics, sitting with families and chumming it up with athletes when USA Gymnastics accused of this and senators are asking for answers! His factually correct statements about Gabby Douglas, "didn't look like a gold medalist" and "has fallen off the beam the last two times she's gone" to Sam Mikulak who he says, in stark contrast to Gabby, "every once in a while makes the odd mistake." Funny way to compare two potential medalists when Sam has fallen at almost every single competition he's entered into for years. The rage continues... Despite Kellogg's tweeting to the contrary, Simone will not be walking in the opening ceremonies. Duh. Aimee Boorman and Maggie Haney said they are getting Olympic tattoos and confirmed that Marta is on Twitter! We created #GymUnsafe A spreadsheet to track coaches who make the news for suspected abuse--filling the gap between the time coaches are investigated and subsequently banned or exonerated. IN THE NEWS In the news, Uncle Tim, Dvora and Jessica chat about: Russia has not been banned as a country, but the FIG must decide on individuals. (3:00) Valentina has declared Ksenia Afanasyeva retired, might not be true but Afan is out. Kuksenkov was cleared of all Meldonium doping charges earlier this year and is in Rio. NBC's coverage of the Olympic Trials is at least partially to blame. (1:29:00) Read Cordelia's full analysis and math proof about the US Olympic team decision. Here is a little piece of her work: “To take the top 3 on every apparatus, a 7 person team would be needed. The selection committee has to optimize the team score within a 5 person team, while ensuring there are at least 4 solid or better scores on each apparatus. The only combination of these top 7 gymnasts plus Ashton Locklear that meets the criteria is the team the selection committee chose. 1. Biles 248.25 2. Hernandez 241.65 3. Raisman 240.85 4. Douglas 235.25 5. Kocain 233.5 6. Smith 232.55 7. Skinner 232.1. As it turns out, the Olympic team that was chosen is composed of the top 5 AAers over the two competitions with the next two AAers as alternates (which includes #2 on VT) and the #2 on UB as an alternate. They could stop there, but they need to ensure that the team of 5 gymnasts has the highest scoring potential." This week Uncle Tim and Jessica discuss the Pan American Games Event Finals with 2004 Olympic floor champion and CBC analyst Kyle Shewfelt! Gym Myth Busters: We found out, straight from the men's FIG Technical Committee President, if Manrique Larduet (CUB) was deducted for excessive celebration after his parallel bars routine in qualifying. We had to know Kyle's opinion: should the men's all-around final have gone to Manrique instead of Sam Mikulak (USA)? Why Canada, Cuba and Flavia Lopez Saraiva (BRA) stole the show in Toronto. Ellie Black (CAN) told Kyle Shewfelt why she was able to achieve to her highest potential during the most pressure packed final of the competition: beam. Northern Irish stud and a man, literally filled with titanium, Luke Carson. Northern Ireland's Luke Carson has become a symbol of strength and perseverance around the world. A veteran of six World Championships, he was poised to send Ireland to their second-ever Olympics before an injury forced him to water down his routines. He came back from two potentially career-ending injuries to compete again. Emma Bailey and Luke discussed: You thought his leg was bad, wait until you hear about his birth defect and the awful procedure he must endure every six months! (See example video on the playlist below to fulfill your creepy curiosity) The status of his injury almost one-year after the Commonwealth Games The problems with metal rods and hot tubs Coaching his pommel horse prodigy, Rhys Mcclenaghan and team at Rathgael Gymnastics Club How he proposed to his girlfriend How social media can fuel healthy competition between gymnasts The both frightening and gratifying truth about funding and sponsor relationships The future of gymnastics in Ireland Episode 33: Simone Biles & Her Coaches 63: Doctor Larry Nassar 138: Prince Emyre Cole 137: Lady Lisa Mason 132: It's Never Too Late to Start Adult Gymnastics 130: Mary-Anne "Mez" Monckton 116: Louis Smith, Amelle Berrabah of Team Sexy & Tumble Episode 5 Recap 115: Kenzo Shirai 72: John Orozco Episode 48: Kyla Ross Episode 32: Sam Mikulak & 2013 Men's NCAA Championships Episode 4: Louis Smith, Spanny's Athlete Oath, Making Men's Gymnastics More Popular Watch this week's playlist on YouTube here.
Simone Biles hugs Katelyn Ohashi after winning the 2015 American Cup. This week we are joined by very special guest and World Cup silver medalist, Mary-Anne Monkton of Australia. Uncle Tim, Evan and Jessica recap of the 2015 American Cup in Cowboy Stadium AKA Simone Biles new house: Marta was on the Nastia Cup broadcast doing commentary again and it was fantastic! Oleg gave Uncle Tim the best birthday present ever! MyKayla Skinner crashed her Cheng in podium training and completely missed her hand. (see photo gallery link below). Head Scratcher of the week: How does a gymnast get invited to a World Cup. Read all 16 pages of Rules here or this: The top seven all-around placers at World Championships are invited. If that includes the host country already, the 8th placer is invited. If it doesn't include the host, the 8th spot is reserved for the host. The FIG Executive Committee can invited a 9th wildcard. If after inviting the top eight they don't have eight participants, they then invite placers nine through twelve from Worlds. If they still don't have eight, they then invite each federation in the order they finished in the team competition at World's (up to the eighth place team) to send a gymnast until they get eight. Then the wildcard gymnast is selected by FIG. Do we think it’s fair the way NBC characterizes Simone as unbeatable, as if the pressure doesn’t compound exponentially the more she wins? Debate our favorite moments and best saves of the meet: MyKayla Skinner on beam or perhaps Sam Mikulak on high bar. We give our thoughts on leveraging the host country's music and cultural dances in floor routines. We pretend we are Aimee Boorman and devise a strategy to keep Simone Biles happy, healthy and engaged. We pretend to be Sam Mikulak and devise a plan for him to convert the consistency he had for his NCAA team to his elite career. The High Bar tension controversy: are the men supposed to all use the same tension on the high bar? No, we are asking. We want to know! Nastia Liukin gets her first grade from us as a commentator. Fashion: what did we think of the Nastia Cup leo, and could Nastia's Swarovski crystals on the nails work for the men Friday the 13th of NCAA Gymnastics. Every meet had a terrifying crash. The worst of which was Shelby Hilton from University of Kentucky. We have an update on her and opine that perhaps a little angel named Kylie had something to do with that crash. The Rage-o-Meter ; Trautwig needs to acknowledge that the majority of the gymnasts on the World Cup circuit are in their 20's and that's the new norm. And many women in their 20's make the US Olympic team and even win medals. We launch a new campaign. Uncle Tim, Emma, and Jessica chat about: The Glasgow World Cup (00:00): massive moments of joy, shooting fire, Vanessa Ferrari looking tired, pulling shorts up to belly buttons, John Orozco and Oleg Verniaiev scamping around Glasgow, why Pauline Schaefer of Germany stole the show. The Mexican Open (34:14): The Four Amiga's: Boguinskaya, Daniela Silivas, Podkopayeva, and Chusovitina; the greatness that is Marta Pihan-Kulesza's exquisite form; the return of the fierce little Italian, Enus Mariani to international competition; and most importantly, our review of the latest super bling $10,000 leotard by GK. NCAA previews (52:49): Our thoughts of Chayse Capps new floor routine, the genius that is Stacey Ervin's stick-a-thon floor routine and our gratittude for NCAA gymnastics after the long artistic drought that is the elite gymnastics code of points hell. Our favorite items from the 2014 Ultimate Gym Nerd Gift Guide (1:01:16) and what Uncle Tim's gymnastics nieces want for Christmas. It involves heavy excavation machinery. Uncle Tim gives his review of Cirque du Soliel's steampunk-inspired show, Kurios--complete with droplets of man sweat and what made the wive's in the audience smack their husband's mouthes closed. (1:05:34) Gymternet News (1:13:43): Gabrielle Douglas's agent dished all the dirt on why Dougy left Chow's, an explanation for Mustafina's poor performance in Stuttgart, the coming out stories of a rhythmic and artistc Olympian, how we feel about men's and women's Olympic trials being held separately, new skills in the code of points and why you should sign up for college Fantasy Gymnastics. Mail Call (1:41:43): An outraged Russian listener, Irish Daniel asks what we think of Verona van de Leur announcing her comeback, and a very knowledgable listener takes gymnasts to task for copyright theft against choreographers.
