Mahisha Dellinger, star of “Mind Your Business with Mahisha,” a business show on Oprah Winfrey's Network, pioneered the natural hair care market when she launched CURLS in 2002, a leading organic hair care company that took the natural hair movement by storm. Her journey to the top didn't come without its own set of challenges. Riding the wave of her success seemed effortless from the outside looking in. The taxing demands of entrepreneurship coupled with the stressors of trying to balance it all, while having it all resulted in her search for a way to “power through.” “Like millions of women, I often drank to cope. As life continued to happen & my day-to-day pressure increased...so did my drinking. This daily habit was beyond what any medical professional deemed safe. I knew I needed to make a change for not only me, but for my children. I have this large family that Iove, I have to be around for them…I want to be around for my grandkids. I began to search for a non-alcoholic, functional cocktail that I could enjoy when I needed to wind down. More importunately I was looking for a cocktail that would protect and repair my liver, aide in gut health, and detoxify my body. Impossible right? Not at all…the rest was Huzzy history!” Dellinger crafted Huzzy Smart Sips with a curated list of liver protecting properties, detoxifying antioxidants, and a proprietary blend will help of euphoric enhancing ingredients that'll keep you in high spirits all night long. Every Huzzy sip was made to rejuvenate & protect your liver, cleanse your system, aide your gut and invigorate your vitality. Now she drinks Huzzy Smart Sips to relax and revitalize her body, naturally. Dellinger is an official member of the Forbes Business Council and was appointed a Small Business Advisor for their entrepreneur community. Black Enterprise awarded Dellinger the 2023 Business Disruptor award. Entrepreneur named her 1 of 100 Powerful Women in the US. She served as a keynote speaker for a host of organizations across the nation including Yelp, AT&T, PepsiCO, Black Enterprise Women of Power & their Vision 20/20 Entrepreneur Conference, Essence Fest, Fast Money, Entrepreneur Magazine, and more. Dellinger has also been featured on several television shows throughout the nation and has been seen on OWN, BET, Revolt TV, Good Morning America, etc.. Mahisha Dellinger is the founder & CEO of Curls, an iconic brand founded in 2002 with a vision to be the leading provider of healthy hair care solutions for the entire natural family. Mahisha discusses her journey to taking control of her own career path and finances, her intentionality, and the “why” behind her drive. Leading with that same intention, Dellinger founded an MBA style program, Black Women Making Millions Academy, that is set to help 25,000 businesses with over $450 million dollars' worth of free resources. Mahisha leaves us with several key learnings: “Entrepreneurship is not for the weak of heart. You have to fight through the worst rejections possible, so many heartbreaks. It takes a special person.” “Have some sort of council that can help you. Because investors are not going to come in with their highest. It's up to you to know what your value is or EBITDA.” On allyship & entering retail at Target: “I owe [Linda Sullivan] a great deal of support, acknowledgement, and gratitude. She took her chance on us when everyone else didn't.” “I see a different piece of me in all of [my children].” “I had to be intentional about every single penny because it was coming out of the bottom line.” Mahisha's Word of 2023: Grace Bio: Mahisha Dellinger's mantra is simple. Curly hair should be healthy, frizz-free, defined, and effortlessly fabulous. Consequently, as a beauty advocate and product innovator, Dellinger worked passionately to produce an award winning line of organic hair care products for women and girls with natural waves, curls and kinks. Frustrated with the lack of effective products for her newly natural, curly hair, Dellinger left her post as Marketing Manager at Intel Corporation to pursue her passion in giving consumers of naturally curly hair effective and eco-conscious products that are natural and safe for all ages to use. In 2002 Dellinger pioneered the newly natural market when she launched CURLS, a family of organic hair care products targeted for women embracing their natural textures ... a market previously unanswered by the beauty industry. Dellinger's astute business acumen and natural talent for delivering market driven products gave way for an instant demand for her product line. Soon thereafter CURLS was available all over the United States, Canada, Brazil, Africa and the UK. As Chief Executive Officer and Founder of CURLS, Dellinger singlehandedly built a strong demand for her popular family of organic products. “We went where she was,” explains Mahisha Dellinger of the marketing strategy that built CURLS, an organic hair product line she founded 20 years ago. This was the strategy Mahisha used to launch her brand and grow it through a DTC model before it was one of the first four brands to launch the ethnic hair category in Target. Word of mouth spread and a customer base was built that doubled as a data source. Today, ambassadors across the country are still dispatched to concerts and comedy shows to hand out samples. Even with social media, nothing beats a boots on the ground approach. In addition to CURLS, which is available in over 400,000 stores, Mahisha runs the Black Woman Making Millions Academy, which is set to help 25,000 Black female-owned businesses with over 450 million dollars of free resources. She knows good mentorship is priceless, and Mahisha is determined to return the favor to other Black women who encounter obstacles in the business world. If you plant good seeds, she says, you will always yield good crops. There is nothing quite as strong as the force of word of mouth marketing. Join the conversation to hear how Mashisha built her business from the ground up, what's next for both of her ventures, and the two words she had for her former boss who once subjected her to racism prior to CURLS became a phenomenon. Quotes • “I knew that once you tried it, you would love it. So, a substantial marketing budget toward samples is important when you're product based.”(8:41-8:51 | Mahisha) • “Whatever you put out there is what you get back and you get it ten-fold. I believe in planting good seeds and harvesting.” (30:54-31:04 | Mahisha) • “Don't wallow in what you don't have, or your disadvantage, or whatever obstacles you have. Use that to propel you to drive forward. That's what I did.” (35:29-35:41 | Mahisha) • “Please hear me when I say, failing to plan is planning to fail. You have to make sure you create a robust business plan. You have to have that road map. If you don't have a road map to success, how are you going to get there?” (37:32-37:50 | Mahisha) Connect with Mahisha Dellinger: Instagram Mahisha | https://www.instagram.com/mahisha_dellinger/ Instagram Curls | https://www.instagram.com/curls/ Please don't forget to rate, comment, and subscribe to Dear FoundHer on Apple, Spotify, or wherever you listen to podcasts! Also called the Mahishasura Mardini Stotram, it is a popular hymn on Goddess Durga, who killed the demon Mahisha. The hymn was composed to praise the Goddess for the mercy she showers on humanity. By chanting this Stotram, one can get the blessings and protection of Goddess Mahishasura Mardini, who is like a mother to her devotees and helps them attain Moksha. This Stotram renders praise to the greatness of the Goddess who came to the rescue of beleaguered humanity and also describes her attributes. In this exciting episode of the Holistic Wealth podcast, our special guest is Mahisha Dellinger, CEO of Curls and star of the TV Show, “Mind Your Own Business” on the Oprah Winfrey Network. Mahisha is a self-made entrepreneur who has had to overcome a deck so stacked against her it included drive-by shootings of her Sacramento-area childhood home. Though raised in poverty by her single mom, Dellinger was able to dig deep, stay open and hang on to the life lessons bestowed by her father, an engineer who came from a solidly successful family and modelled what was in store for Dellinger if she buckled down and worked hard. While putting herself through college, Dellinger juggled her course load with an internship in the internal communications department at Intel Corporation. Dellinger was quickly offered a temporary position at the Fortune 500 software giant working three days a week and finishing her degree by cramming classes into the other two days. Not satisfied with her role at Intel, Mahisha, now a mother, side-hustled her idea for a high quality, organic and vegan haircare brand that nurtured textured curls that was gentle enough for her daughter to use. By day, she more than fulfilled her obligations at the notoriously rigorous, competitive Intel. But in every other available hour, she met with cosmetic chemists, web developers and R&D specialists who helped her define and refine her industry-first formulas. In the spring of 2002, she flipped the switch on Curls.biz, and an ecommerce business was born. For the next six years, Dellinger and her team added to the product lineup and expanded into the salon channel of distribution. When Dellinger was approached by Target to help the massive retailer address the new natural direction in ethnic hair, her company's growth skyrocketed. And today, In addition to its substantial salon business, Curls Beauty Brands – which now encompasses products for the entire family --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/keisha-blair/support

In todays episode, I catch up with Mahisha Dellinger, the Founder and CEO of the natural hair company CURLS, which took the market by storm after launching in 2002. Unsatisfied and unfulfilled in corporate America, Mahisha side hustled the idea for a high quality, organic, vegan hair care brand that was able to thoroughly nourish textured curls, yet be gentle enough for use by her daughter. In this episode of Truth’s Table, Ekemini and Michelle are at the table with Mahisha Dellinger, Founder, and CEO of CURLS. Mahisha Dellinger's mantra is simple. Curly hair should be healthy, frizz-free, defined, and effortlessly fabulous. Consequently, as a beauty advocate and product innovator, Dellinger worked passionately to produce an award-winning line of organic hair care products for women and girls with natural waves, curls, and kinks. Dellinger's astute business acumen and natural talent for delivering market-driven products gave way for an instant demand for her product line. Soon thereafter CURLS was available all over the United States, Canada, Brazil, Africa and the UK. As Chief Executive Officer and Founder of CURLS, Dellinger singlehandedly built a strong demand for her popular family of organic products. Soon Target, Sally Beauty, Rite Aid, Walgreens, Wal-Mart and CVS came knocking at her door. CURLS has partnered with these national retailers and is currently in negotiations with Boots in the United Kingdom. CURLS has been featured in a host of beauty publications including lnStyle, Essence, Glamour, Ebony, Juicy, Redbook, Lucky, Seventeen, Vibe, BlaBlack Enterprise, Elle, Modern Salon, Woman's World, Parents, and a host of other hair and salon trade publications. The retail success and exposure of the CURLS brand has catapulted the business forward. Dellinger is a sought after industry expert. Dellinger was the keynote speaker at her alumni school, California State University Sacramento's "Make Your Mark" conference sponsored by Target and Bishop TD Jakes’ Woman Thou Art Loosed Conference, to name a few. Dellinger has also been featured on several television shows throughout the nation. Dellinger is the star of “Mind Your Business with Mahisha” on OWN, Oprah Winfrey’s television network, as the expert helping other women based businesses reach the million-dollar mark. Mahisha Dellinger had a very tough financial upbringing but she was determined to succeed. After college, she graduated and began working in marketing at Intel. It was an idea that has in five years scaled BIG. CURLS has now teamed up with Target to bring her products into their stores. Mahisha is also the author of the book Against All Odds: From The Projects to the Penthouse. Her business has even caught the eye of Oprah, and Mahisha has had the opportunity to have her own show on The Oprah Winfrey Network.
