I'm putting things in them, I'm hoping anyway, that I'm dropping seeds in them. If I really was caught up in people, I would have stopped a long time ago. You have to carve out space that feels most authentic to you. Social media is an amazing tool, but it's not the only tool. We have to quiet this noise somehow. If you lose, you don't get picked, that's not a failure. Everything doesn't have to be an announcement. You have to find another outlet versus feeling like you have to share. Be open to assisting. Know what you don't like. My very special guest this week is so committed to elevating the salon industry that he wrote a best-selling book about it called "Beautiful Business". He won NAHA's Lifetime Achievement Award and Editorial Stylist of the Year, and was inducted into the London Hairdresser Hall of Fame. He has a very successful salon in Manhattan and I am proud to call him a good friend. Please welcome Sam Brocato.• Sam became hooked on the beauty industry at 16, when his mom took him to her part-time job at a local beauty school• early in his career he showed his boss an ad in Modern Salon for training in London, and he gave him the money to sign up. Everyone was there at Sassoon's - Vidal, Trevor Sorbie, Christopher Booker, Roger Thompson• Paul Mitchell and Horst Rechelbacher both encouraged Sam, even if it was in very different ways• The title of Sam's book, Beautiful Business, refers to using both sides of the brain - creative and logical. Sam has always tried to use both to propel his very successful career.⭐️⭐️⭐️ Check out more episodes and the videos at https://chrisbaran.com/podcast ⭐️ Join our FREE Facebook community for Salon Team Trainers today. https://facebook.com/groups/salonteamtraining ✅ Exclusive content on how to implement and scale your salon training the easy way ✅ Save time and learn what works from people just like you ✅ Get back to your mission of building the salon business and creating more jobs Learn more here - https://bit.ly/trainersplaybook Join our FB group - https://facebook.com/groups/salonteamtraining Follow us on IG - https://instagram.com/coachchrisbaran

In this episode of "She Makes Waves," I delve into the relationship between our mindset and money. I share my personal journey of growing up with limited finances and initially dismissing the importance of money. But along my own journey, I've come to realize that our mindset around money can profoundly impact our ability to lead the life we desire. I tell you about the awesome changes that happened when I embraced the idea that money could enable me to prioritize what truly matters: meaningful connections, heart-led projects, and cherished experiences with my daughter. I also touch on the need for hairstylists, and others, to normalize having a big life, confidently valuing their skills, and learning from different professions. Throughout the episode, I emphasize the importance of evolving our mindset to unlock new possibilities and appreciation for our unique life journey. Mahisha Dellinger is the founder & CEO of Curls, an iconic brand founded in 2002 with a vision to be the leading provider of healthy hair care solutions for the entire natural family. Mahisha discusses her journey to taking control of her own career path and finances, her intentionality, and the “why” behind her drive. Leading with that same intention, Dellinger founded an MBA style program, Black Women Making Millions Academy, that is set to help 25,000 businesses with over $450 million dollars' worth of free resources. Mahisha leaves us with several key learnings: “Entrepreneurship is not for the weak of heart. You have to fight through the worst rejections possible, so many heartbreaks. It takes a special person.” “Have some sort of council that can help you. Because investors are not going to come in with their highest. It's up to you to know what your value is or EBITDA.” On allyship & entering retail at Target: “I owe [Linda Sullivan] a great deal of support, acknowledgement, and gratitude. She took her chance on us when everyone else didn't.” “I see a different piece of me in all of [my children].” “I had to be intentional about every single penny because it was coming out of the bottom line.” Mahisha's Word of 2023: Grace Bio: Mahisha Dellinger's mantra is simple. Curly hair should be healthy, frizz-free, defined, and effortlessly fabulous. Consequently, as a beauty advocate and product innovator, Dellinger worked passionately to produce an award winning line of organic hair care products for women and girls with natural waves, curls and kinks. Frustrated with the lack of effective products for her newly natural, curly hair, Dellinger left her post as Marketing Manager at Intel Corporation to pursue her passion in giving consumers of naturally curly hair effective and eco-conscious products that are natural and safe for all ages to use. In 2002 Dellinger pioneered the newly natural market when she launched CURLS, a family of organic hair care products targeted for women embracing their natural textures ... a market previously unanswered by the beauty industry. Dellinger's astute business acumen and natural talent for delivering market driven products gave way for an instant demand for her product line. Soon thereafter CURLS was available all over the United States, Canada, Brazil, Africa and the UK. As Chief Executive Officer and Founder of CURLS, Dellinger singlehandedly built a strong demand for her popular family of organic products. Soon Target, Sally Beauty, Rite Aid, Walgreens, Wal-Mart and CVS came knocking at her door. CURLS has been featured in a host of beauty publications including lnStyle, Essence, Glamour, Ebony, People, O Magazine, Shape, Cosmo,Vogue, Redbook, Seventeen, Forbes, Black Enterprise, Elle, Modern Salon, Woman's World, Parents, and a host of other hair and salon trade publications. The retail success and exposure of the CURLS brand has catapulted the business forward. Dellinger is a sought after industry expert. She was appointed a Small Business Advisor for FORBES and is an official member their Business Council. Entrepreneur named her 1 of 100 Powerful Women in the US. She served as a panel expert and keynote speaker for organizations across the nation including Black Enterprise Women of Power & their Vision 20/20 Entrepreneur Conference, Essence Fest, Fast Money, Entrepreneur Magazine. Dellinger was the keynote speaker at her alumni school, California State University Sacramento's ""Make Your Mark"" conference sponsored by Target and Bishop TD Jake's Woman Thou Art Loosed Conference & was invited back to speak at Jake's MegaFest conference, to name a few. Dellinger has also been featured on several television shows throughout the nation. Dellinger is the star of “Mind Your Business with Mahisha” on OWN, Oprah Winfrey's television network, as the expert helping other women based businesses reach the million -dollar mark. Dellinger was the keynote speaker at her alumni school, California State University Sacramento's "Make Your Mark" conference sponsored by Target and Bishop TD Jake's Woman Thou Art Loosed Conference & was invited back to speak at Jake's MegaFest conference, to name a few. Dellinger has also been featured on several television shows throughout the nation. Dellinger is the star of “Mind Your Business with Mahisha” on OWN, Oprah Winfrey's television network, as the expert helping other women based businesses reach the million -dollar mark. I think it's fair to say that in today's workplace, there is a lot of talk about what exactly modern salon culture is. As a salon owner, how do you find the balance between offering more flexibility to your team, meeting clients' expectations, and running a profitable business? I often talk about the theory of that, but there's nothing better than talking to someone who is actually doing it. My guest on today's podcast is Pedro Inchenko, who, along with his best friend and business partner Jonny Orthona, started the Ena Salon in London's Covent Garden as well as the off-shoot education brand, Allilon Education. In today's podcast, we will discuss: What it takes to create a modern salon culture The importance of remaining curious The need for flexibility in a modern salon environment And lots more! Mary Wilson When Mary was seven , she watched her hairdresser Mom cut off her Grandmother's long braids and transform her look. She became intrigued by the power of change that beauty creates. After graduating from Cosmetology School in her early 20's, she moved from Iowa to California and has continued to learn and grow ever since. Over the past 30 years, she has been involved in most every aspect of the beauty industry, including marketing, new product development, brand development, staff management, presentation skills, and all aspects of education. Over time, she developed her personal sense of the product experience. After suffering severe migraines, she vowed to only use essential oils as fragrance to avoid reactions to heavy perfumes and synthetics. Mary has traveled the world sharing her passions and is recognized as a leading industry expert. In 2004, she teamed up with Industry Leader Ann Mincey to create “Destination Rejuvenation Retreats.” Together, they have since also created a dynamic and interactive Platform/teacher training course aptly named “I AM a Great Presenter.” She is a 200-hour certified yoga teacher and shares her knowledge regarding managing stress with the beauty industry as well. In order to serve others, Mary believes you must first be clear, grounded, and relaxed in your own body, heart, and mind. Wilson Collective Beauty Leader, yogi, cyclist, who loves the beach. Passionate about the Wilson Collective and Destination Rejuvination. Phillip Wilson Wilson Method has worn many industry shoes. He has been a hairdresser for over 50 years. Phillip Wilson-Founder/Creative Director When Phillip Wilson was a small boy, he would accompany his mother to the salon where he would sweep up hair and catch ashes dropped from slumbering ladies under the dryers. He fell in love with the scents, the sounds, and the salon experience. Receiving coins for tips here and there helped him learn early on that care and kindness go a long way. When asked by the schools' head master to leave school at 14, he began to explore life beyond his small town in coastal England. Phillip set his sights on passing the entrance exam for Cosmetology and he worked hard, jumping the mail train each morning to make his way to college. After completing his licensing, he moved to London and was fortunate enough to train with Vidal Sassoon, Raymond - a.k.a. Teezy Weezy, Alexander of Paris, and many of the Grand Masters of Europe. A few years later, while working a side gig in a pub on Guernsey Island, Phillip was introduced to his greatest young opportunity. Being at the right place at the right time, he was asked to dress the hair of visiting Royal Duchesses for a special occasion. They all fell in love with him and he was asked back time and again. When Phillip moved to Canada in the mid 1970's, he began his platform artist career and opened his first salons in Vancouver. There, he honed all of those skills learned from so many. He began cutting hair with two combs and two brushes in a very free-form style. This became his Wilson Method over the years and is still how he approaches hair today. Named one of the Top 100 Artists of all time by Modern Salon, his work has been featured on T.V. and on magazine covers over the last 3 decades. He has travelled the world with his wife Mary to share his passion, creativity, and love for this industry. https://bit.ly/mary-phillip --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/hairstylist-podcast/message

Today we're talking about responsibility. Before we get there, we discuss some tips about sponsored ads for Instagram.Todd was reading through a report from Modern Salon, and it sparked a thought about responsibility. We run through a couple of the graphs from the report and chat about them. Why do people struggle to accept responsibility?Ego. At least, we think that's a big part of it.So what are the owner's responsibilities? Here's a short list we came up with:Building the business and assuming the riskLifting othersCreating opportunitiesManagement and leadershipSafetyQualityStaying on track, i.e., mission, vision, core valuesStaffingTrainingMarketingMoneyBudgetsProcessesSystemsOperationsInventoryTaxesInsuranceRentAgreementsEvaluationInnovationTechnologyCompliance and regulationsEducating the publicand a whole lot moreNow let's chat about some things that are not your responsibility as an owner. We understand many more examples exist; this isn't meant to be a comprehensive list. Some things a business owner is NOT responsible for, such as happiness or building someone's book. Owners (should) want you to be happy and doing what your love. But that doesn't mean they're on the hook for your happiness. You find a way to be happy and bring it to the party. They're also not responsible for building your book. You are. Owners could feed you clients all day long, but if you're not doing your part and they're not coming back to see you, that's on you. You'll make progress when you genuinely take responsibility for the things that happen in your business. If you're not sure where to start, that's OK! But don't sit around waiting.Take action. If you cannot figure it out alone, that's also OK!
