This episode of Across The Margin: The Podcast presents an interview with musician Chris Forsyth. It isn't hyperbole to describe Chris as one of rock's most gifted improvisers. Chris got his start in Brooklyn's experimental circles in the early 2000s and promptly grew into a masterful technical player. As the bandleader of Chris Forsyth & the Solar Motel Band, he composed mostly instrumental pieces that channeled both the psychedelic jamming of the Grateful Dead and the precision of art-punk guitar acts like Television. Whether with the Solar Motel Band or on his other solo projects, Chris sources from an extensive pool of influences — psychedelia, folk, noise, classic rock — melding the varying influences into Chris's own brand of cerebral improvisational rock. Chris's latest album — the focus of this episode — is entitled Evolution Here We Come, a largely instrumental album and a powerful and driving work of art. Featuring contributions from Douglas McCombs (Tortoise), Marshall Allen (Sun Ra Arkestra), Steve Wynn (The Dream Syndicate), Linda Pitmon (The Baseball Project), Tom Malach (Garcia Peoples), Ryan Jewell (Ryley Walker), and co-producer Dave Harrington (Darkside), Evolution Here We Come is seven sprawling sonic journeys that exhibit just how talented of a guitarist Chris persists as. In this episode host Michael Shields and Chris Forsyth discuss how music from the 80s and bands such as ZZ Top influenced Evolution Here We Come while talking about what it was like co-producing the album with Dave Harrington (Darkside). They recount how Chris was able to get Marshall Allen (Sun Ra Arkestra) to play on the album, what it meant to cover Richard Thompson's “You're Going To Need Somebody,” his forthcoming tour with Meg Baird, and so much more. dear livejournal, i’ve been in this *spring cleaning* sort of mode. obviously cliche, but i’ve been reorganizing my bedroom a bit. the place i’ve spent most of my time the past couple years… you heard of it? mostly i’m moving all the food not bombs stuff into the garage, which is huge and sort of ridiculous that i’ve been storing it in my bedroom this whole time. it’s so much stuff. and i need to make space for this cute ska cat bookshelf i found at an estate sale. i got a new bike seat and i hope it makes my rhoided buttock feel better enough to ride. i got the landlords to do some maintenance that just took a while for me to bug them about (emphasis on the *bug* part because davis cockroach summers are horrifying). we’re feeling good and fresh with all these changes !please enjoy these fresh tunes. i mean, they’re like 3+ years old because i’m listening to music in chronological order and i’m very behind. but these songs are most definitely shelf stable ! enjoy ! and don’t forget to refrigerate after opening *winky face emoticon*DOWNLOAD RECORDINGsubscribe to the podcast here: http://feeds.feedburner.com/5432fun(intro by omar)Qlowski “Taking Control” Pure As Fearanxiety machine “waiting around” probablysun young “friends” tilesHanna Broback “Sharp Houses” Pine BedCassette “Intentions” CassetteBasement Revolver “Johnny” Heavy EyesAustin Leonard Jones “Haunted House Party” CujoDingbat Superminx “Happening” Public LuxurySPELLLING “Hard to Please” Mazy FlyVintage Crop “Guarantees” Company Man EPYves Jarvis “360” The Same But By Different MeansEleanor Murray “Scream” ThunderlingTanger “I’ll Never Remember” Hz DonutMeg Baird and Mary Lattimore “Painter of Tygers” Ghost ForestsOur Girl “I Really Don’t Mind” Bedroom RecordNEO NEOS “Rock Facts” HARD DRIVE EXPERIMENTS VOL. 1nuvolascura “flower offering” nuvolascuraR.Ariel “Full Moon” Where You AreMoths Protect Me “Never Admit” This Can’t Be Happening

Mary Lattimore on the JUMP Music Podcast SE2-EP1 @marylattimore Mary Lattimore is a harpist living in Los Angeles. She experiments with her Lyon and Healy Concert Grand harp and effects. Her solo debut, The Withdrawing Room, was released in 2013 on Desire Path Recordings. Lattimore also writes harp parts for songs and recordings, performing and recording with such great artists as Meg Baird, Thurston Moore, Sharon Van Etten, Jarvis Cocker, Kurt Vile, Steve Gunn, Ed Askew and Fursaxa. Silver Ladders, her third LP on Ghostly, sees Lattimore arriving at her most confident work to date, expanding her style of instrumental storytelling with the help of producer and guitarist Neil Halstead (Slowdive, Mojave 3). Recorded in Halstead's studio near an old English surftown just before lockdown, the songs on Silver Ladders reflect Lattimore's vivid memories against the gloom and glimmer of the ocean. #jumpmusic #musiceducation #musicpodcast #musicindustry #musicindustrytips #musicindustrynews #musicindustryprofessional #musicinterview #musicianlife #musicianstoday #brilliantmusicians #musicaddict #musicartist #musicbusiness #musicmaker
Like a lot of people, I haven't left my house much for the last seven months. I've spent a lot of time with headphones on, trying to find the dreamiest music possible to escape into and pass the time. EPISODE #88 is crammed full of distorted guitars, piercing synths, vocal histrionics, and meditations on lives both small and large. In this hour, you will hear classics from Lone Justice, The Soup Dragons, and Beverly, brand new jams from White Poppy, Maria Minerva, and The Lemon Twigs, plus a whole lot more. It jumps from country-rock to soul to garage pop to deep dance beats to progressive peacoat rock to trance-folk to throwback Britpop to real-deal Britpop. It's best experienced after spinning around for a few seconds and collapsing on the floor. Enjoy!Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to Random Old Records via Apple Podcasts or RSS. Meg Baird is drummer, guitarist, vocalist and songwriter. Meg her musical journey playing with her sister Laura in what would become known as The Baird Sisters. She moved to Philadelphia in 1995 and played in bands such as Espers, Heron Oblivian, and Watery Love. Beginning in 2007, Meg has released a stunning series of solo albums that showcase her uniquely compelling and haunting song craft. In 2018, Meg collaborated with harpist and Trap Set alumnus Mary Lattimore on the critically acclaimed duo album, Ghost Forests. She spoke to Joe from her home in San Francisco.
Mary Lattimore deploys her classical harp training to construct immersive, improvisatory sound worlds. A relentless road warrior, she routinely spends over 200 days a year on tour, both as a band member and a solo artist. She visited Joe on a rare day off to discuss: falling out of moving cars; growing up with a harpist mom; studying at Eastman; how meeting the Arcade Fire changed her trajectory; improvising with Thurston Moore; evolving from a hired gun to a solo artist; and living life with a "say yes" philosophy.
Kath Bloom was born to musical parents. Her father was famous oboe player: Robert Bloom. She loved and lived for music of all kinds, but by the late seventies , she had absorbed much of the amazing folk and rock musicians who lived and died and changed the world during those times. She sang harmony with her friends ,and eventually picked up a guitar and wrote her own stuff. Teaming up with Loren Mazzacane and Tom Hanford in New Haven Ct, she became very prolific. But performing made her nervous and strangely withdrawn. She also painted and wrote poetry, then had a child and a failed marriage. She later found Stan Bronski(second husband). They had two more boys. All the while, writing and singing. She also began doing music with small children, eventually teaching classes. Moving from New England to Florida, she created theater and music with kids and formed a woman"s band which was fun. All her playing to this point was local to the regions she lived. When the family moved back to New England in 2000, she had become a horse trainer also, working with many young or "difficult" animals and this also was medicine for her soul. .And always recording. In Ct she reunited music with Hanford again, playing in that region, for kids and familes.,working with horses, raising the family In 2007 Guy Blackman ( Chapter Music) and Caveh Zahedi (film maker) contacted her about doing a Tribute album. Her songs were recorded by Bill Callahan, Meg Baird, Mark Kozelek and others. Gradually invites came from England, Spain, and eventually Japan and Australia. She also began casual occasional touring in this country. In 2016 she made a video with Esther May Campbell in Bristol, England. She has many self-produced albums plus ones put out by Guy Blackman and Mark Kozelek, Now she enjoys performing most of all , plays with Flo Ness and David Shapiro and is grateful to all that have encouraged her!! Why being an employee of Chevy right now really seems like it would suck, some coal rollers set up a blockade in front of a Tesla charging station because what else would a coal roller do for fun, and why isn't there a national manhunt for the "man driving a black Ford F-150 in Montana" who's going around shooting at people he thinks look like bigfoot? (Part 3 of the Podcast only content, begins at the 2:07:00 mark) 2018's best shows and films of the year, and a whole lot of overrated and bad shit, too. It's a whole thing and then some, and sure to be one of the only end of year lists that's actually fun to listen to. Oh, and Tom Waits is still the coolest person on the planet. Mollie’s Final PuhFooFuh Spotlight, Part 16 of 16: "Real Fan Dan", and asking what we've learned from all these PFUFA spotlights. On this week's Snacky Tunes, Greg and Darin kick off the show with Canadian transplant Noah Bernamoff, the co-founder of Mile End Deli, Black Seed Bagels, and Grand Army. They chat about New York's uniquely competitive deli scene, cocktails at Grand Army, and Black Seed's plans for the upcoming Passover holiday. In the second half of the show, Philadelphia harpist Mary Lattimore delivers an exclusive in-studio performance. Mary has performed and recorded with such artists as Meg Baird, Thurston Moore, Sharon Van Etten, Jarvis Cocker, Kurt Vile, Steve Gunn, Ed Askew, Fursaxa, and Jeff Zeigler. She has been a part of soundtrack projects including Valerie and Her Week of Wonders, Lopapeysa, a film by David Kessler set in Iceland, and the film score for Marina Abramovic: the Artist is Present, a documentary about the artist. In March 2013, she accompanied Nick Cave’s beautiful horse soundsuits for the 100th anniversary of Grand Central Station in New York City. Mary was named 2014 Pew Fellow by the Pew Center for Arts & Heritage, an organization that awards grants in support of Philadelphia’s arts and cultural community. She is one of 12 individuals chosen to receive a $60,000 fellowship award.
Come and join us on an excursion through the debut, self-titled release, Heron Oblivion by, you guessed it, Heron Oblivion. Composed of seasoned musicians Charlie Saufley, Meg Baird, and former Comets on Fire members Ethan Miller and Noel Von Harmonson, Heron Oblivion lies on the fringes of psychedelic rock… and we want to see what makes it tick! Bear with us for this full album analysis and let us know your feelings below. Also, stick around 'till [1:19:50] for an interesting conversation on the concept of mood music (sometimes derisively called "musak"). Is society guilty of isolating, partitioning, and oversimplifying moods in music, or rather of condemning the confidently one-dimensional? These questions -- and some scary predictions -- on this week's Crash Chords Podcast! Continue reading
