Jamie recently released a statement on Instagram that she is stepping away from podcasting for a while. As a team, we have decided to air the six conversations that were recorded prior to May 20th. About the Episode: Victor sheds light on trafficking around the world as a way of modern-day slavery and his passion to educate others on the reality of this but also the calling he felt placed on his life to use his law degree to fight trafficking. He shares how his small act of faith trusts the Lord to fight this injustice and change the landscape around the world through the Human Trafficking Institute. Hear how the Body of Christ is called to fight injustice and the passion behind Victor's heart as he follows the call of the Lord. This is a podcast that has so much joy in the midst of such a dark subject as you think about how much God is doing through tangible hope. Drawing on real-world cases and extensive scholarship, The Locust Effect paints a vivid portrait of the way fractured criminal justice systems in developing countries have spawned a hidden epidemic of human trafficking and everyday violence that is undermining vital investments in poverty alleviation, public health, and human rights. The Locust Effect is a Washington Post bestseller that has been featured by the New York Times, The Economist, NPR, the Today Show, Forbes, TED, and the BBC, among others. For their work on The Locust Effect, Boutros and Haugen received the 2016 Grawemeyer Prize for Ideas Improving World Order, a prize awarded annually to the authors of one book based on originality, feasibility, and potential for global impact. Boutros previously served as a federal prosecutor on human trafficking cases of national significance on behalf of the United States Department of Justice's Human Trafficking Prosecution Unit. He has taught human trafficking at the FBI Academy in Quantico, trained law enforcement professionals in the United States and other countries on how to investigate and prosecute human trafficking, and taught trial advocacy to lawyers from Latin America, South and Southeast Asia, and Africa. He has written on foreign affairs and human rights, including a feature article in Foreign Affairs and a piece co-authored with former US Trafficking in Persons Ambassador John Richmond in the AntiTrafficking Review, and developed and taught a course on human rights, human trafficking, and the rule of law in the developing world at the University of Chicago Law School. Any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, or actual events is purely coincidental.* Sarah Inspired by real stories on immigration and https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-12101748 Sarah arrived in Montreal months ago with her son Michael who won't let go of memories of friends who looked like him, of his church and fave Sunday School hymns. Sarah feels her son's pain intensely. she misses her husband Boutros immensely. she often wonders why she still obeyed when he told her to go, but he had to stay. are we ever gonna go back home? are we always gonna be numb just like stones? the winters are longer than adopting habits. tryna find our place, but they put us in brackets. people before us say the feeling's temporary, but the burdens are endless and heavy to carry. Sarah can't forget the day she landed in a metropole that loudly chanted liberty, opportunity, and security. at least, she wasn't persecuted daily. that day, she cried herself to sleep, feeling like she was a lost sheep without her family in Alexandria and her best friend Monica.   are we ever gonna go back home? are we always gonna be numb just like stones? the winters are longer than adopting habits. tryna find our place, but they put us in brackets. people before us say the feeling's temporary, but the burdens are endless and heavy to carry. tomorrow's January 1st, 2011, Sarah was encouraged by Karen, Michael's Sunday School servant, to celebrate New Year's in the church's basement. Sarah calls Boutros to let him know. he loves the idea and asks her to take photos “because i miss you both terribly. for my part, i'll attend mass at Al-Qiddissin.” are we ever gonna go back home? are we always gonna be numb just like stones? the winters are longer than adopting habits. tryna find our place, but they put us in brackets. people before us say the feeling's temporary, but the burdens are endless and heavy to carry. the next day, Sarah sends him the pictures, but she never gets back an answer. she sends him a nervous voice note, “please, pick up! don't act like a ghost.” after preparing Michael's stuff for school and making dinner and keeping her cool, she calls Boutros for the third time, but in Egypt, it's already bedtime. are we ever gonna go back home? are we always gonna be numb just like stones? the winters are longer than adopting habits. tryna find our place, but they put us in brackets. people before us say the feeling's temporary, but the burdens are endless and heavy to carry. right before she goes to bed, Sarah opens facebook and stops dead before a tragic post on her feed, “bomb kills 21 at Al-Qiddissin on New Year's Eve.” she has to call Boutros's family now, who cares if it's past midnight now? his mother picked up the phone bawling, “fen Boutros ya omi, why are you crying?”   we are never gonna go back home, or we're gonna end up dead just like stones. the winters are longer than they used to be ‘cause they keep attacking our habaybis. we will see them one day in heaven, where we won't have to carry any burden. we are never gonna go back home: Om Al Donia lives within us, we're not alone, so the long winters got nothing on us just like the persecutors who go nuts when we chant kyrieleison loudly and accept the crown of martyrdom proudly. From the moment he arrived in Cleveland, Dr. Akram Boutros' visionary thinking has inspired MetroHealth to elevate medical care by providing and integrating social services to build equity, promote justice, and improve the health of people and communities. With the 2019 creation of the Institute for H.O.P.E.™ (Health, Opportunity, Partnership, and Empowerment), MetroHealth is connecting patients and neighbors to fresh food, stable housing, education, career training, and other services that keep them healthy. Dr. Boutros paired that work with a $1 billion reimagination of the system's main campus on West 25th Street. The new MetroHealth Glick Center, which opens in October 2022 and will be the first hospital in a park in the country, has sparked the rebirth of the surrounding neighborhood while preserving its Hispanic culture. Dr. Boutros' focus on inclusion, diversity, and equity is just as significant. In 2020, 39% of MetroHealth's new hires were racially or ethnically diverse.Under his leadership, MetroHealth has grown to more than 20 community health centers, four hospitals, five MetroExpressCare locations, and ten pharmacies. Those are in addition to MetroHealth's main-campus medical center, which is home to the area's most experienced Level I Adult Trauma Center, Ohio's only Ebola Treatment Center, and the only adult and pediatric trauma and burn center in the state.MetroHealth's annual revenue grew from $785 million to more than $1.5 billion during his tenure. MetroHealth now treats more than 300,000 patients at more than 1.4 million visits annually. Since 2013, the health system has created more than 1,800 new jobs, sent doctors into more than a dozen local schools, and received the largest donation in its history – $42 million from JoAnn and Bob Glick.  A Quote From This Episode"You only have to lead from a place of love. Leaders don't lead organizations; they lead other people. And if you don't truly love the people you work with and who put the time in to support the organization's goals, you're not going to fare very well."Resources Mentioned In This EpisodeMetroHealth Video Campaign - Healing Begins With ListeningDwight LeeLisa RamirezMary Massie-StoryJohn Hariston Jr.Leadership and Self Deception by the Arbinger InstituteAbout The International Leadership Association (ILA)The ILA was created in 1999 to bring together professionals with a keen interest in the study, practice, and teaching of leadership. After university, Mark applied to be a runner with Talkback Television. Later, in 2012 he went back to university to study an MA at the University of East Anglia, one of the best programmes in Britain. He shares with me some of his key takeaways from his time at UEA, the principle one being that the degree took away any excuses for him to hide behind. He wasn't busy doing other things. He was there solely to write, and so he had to write. The other benefit was meeting other writers. It was wonderful to be part of a community or everyone was learning new skills and having a shared experience. He also learned a lot about himself as a writer, the habits and tricks he used in his fiction, that he had learnt whilst writing TV scripts.Later in our conversation Mark delves a little deeper and tells me what he feels are the key differences between writing for TV and writing a novel.Mark tells me about his fantasy comedy series, Heroes of Histovia. He shares came easily and what came with a lot more difficulty. And he also explains the key themes behind each of the trilogy. One of the things Mark Boutros learned whilst completing his MA was that until then structure had dictated his characters, not the other way around. What he discovered through studying was that his characters were the ones who should dictate the stoked structure of the story. This is one of the things that prompted him to write his book, The Craft Of Character. He says that there isn't a story until the character wants something. Then it's up to you as the writer to find out why they want it and what about it feeds the characters' needs.Mark talks through why it's important to flesh out the bones of your character. Their worldview and their background inform how the respond to the character around them and the action that takes place. It's very easy to make the decision that your character will do something, simply because it sounds good. But is it an integral part of their personality?Mark also talks about how you get your character moving and playing an active role in the story, not just sitting back and letting the story happen to them. It's very important not to protect your principal character, says Boutros. By doing that, you give them the opportunity to get into real trouble and therefore real redemption. He emphasises that the more time you spend on understanding your character, the more unique your work will be.I asked Mark to share one of the most common mistakes he sees new writers make and he explains that it's that new writers write very passive characters, or spend spend enough time looking for the unique spin on that character. For example, he says, you can base a character on Joey from Friends, but what is it that makes them unique from Joey, or anybody else.Mark Boutros rounds off the conversation by telling me what he's working on now, and where you can find out more about him online.Connect with Mark:Mark Boutrosmark-boutrosHeroes of Hastovia Book Editing Blueprint A Step-By-Step Plan To Making Your Novels Publishable Buzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched!
