I grew up the typical Rust Belt kid eating mostly a hodgepodge of way-too-sweet, packaged foods and beverages. I'd like to think my “white trash palate” has evolved in the last few decades, but some things are harder to kill than 50 Cent. And you might be asking yourself…what does this have to do with your conversation with the founder of the energy drink brand Gorgie, Michelle Cordeiro Grant? Well…at this past year's NACS Show, this recovering artificially flavored and sweetened Energy+ drink enthusiast tasted a few naturally sweetened and lightly flavored Energy+ drinks that were great…one of which that left an impact on me was Gorgie. So, naturally I wanted to lean-in further, especially after learning about the founder's unconventional yet fascinating path to the CPG industry. In our conversation, Michelle explains how that business superpower allowed her to think differently and inspired many key strategic elements within Gorgie. We also breakdown the growing importance woman are playing within the energy drinks market. Plus, take it a step further and explain why it's the perfect time to apply a much-needed female-first lens to the beverage category. Additionally, Michelle shares important lessons she's learned in year one building an energy drink brand. Finally, we talk through some untapped exploratory sales channels and what Michelle's lifestyle branding goals are for Gorgie long-term. But these are just a few of the fascinating topics within our recent conversation… FOLLOW ME ON MY SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNTS LINKEDIN YOUTUBE TWITTER INSTAGRAM FACEBOOK --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/joshua-schall/support

For a company to grow, big changes must often be made. Such has been the case for Lively, a digitally native lingerie brand founded in 2015 by Michelle Cordeiro Grant. Since its inception, Lively has had much success navigating the crowded undergarment space, thanks in part to its prioritization of inclusion, community and connection, according to Cordeiro Grant. A few years into the brand's existence, Lively was acquired by Japanese lingerie company Wacoal in 2019 for $105 million. In August 2022, Cordeiro Grant announced she was stepping down. Kristin DiCunzolo, previously vp of marketing and direct sales at Wacoal America, was appointed Lively's president and CEO. In her new role, DiCunzolo has ambitious plans to catapult Lively's steady growth. That includes expanding the brand into new categories, diversifying its retail channels and launching it in international markets. Lively is launching e-commerce in Canada later this year. "Our community has grown with [Lively]. They've aged with us also. But what [the customer] liked when she was 25 might be different almost 10 years later. So we want to be sure [our products] continue to [excite her] while also igniting a new fresh audience," DiCunzolo said on the latest episode of The Glossy Podcast.

Ever worn a really uncomfortable bra and thought “Who even invented this?” Michelle Cordeiro Grant was one of those people. She worked for major lingerie and underwear brands before starting her own, Lively, after she saw how other brands didn't put their customer - or comfort - first. In order to launch her intimates and loungewear brand, Lively, Michelle Cordeiro Grant decided to do everything a little differently. In fact, some of her strategy turned convention on its head. She built up a community of fans and advocates before she had a product to sell–and made several other counterintuitive business decisions along the way to an $85 million acquisition very early in her startup's life. She explains her motivations, inspirations, and the company's turning points to host Christine Lagorio-Chafkin.
I first connected with Michelle Cordeiro Grant when she was just getting started on LIVELY. I was working as a fashion editor and stopped by LIVELY's pop-up in New York to pick up something from the new underwire-free, comfy bra brand everyone was talking about. That was in 2016, and by 2019 Michelle had sold LIVELY to Wacoal for $105 Million. I went back to the early days of LIVELY in this interview, and asked Michelle to talk me through how she got so much traction, so quickly. She shared the email marketing tactic she used to grow her pre-launch email list to 133,000 people in 2 days, how she worked up the courage to quit her corporate job and get into startups, and more lessons from her wild ride from idea to acquisition. While working as a Director / Senior Merchant at Victoria's Secret, Michelle Cordeiro Grant learned that the $13B lingerie category, in the US alone, was dominated by Victoria's Secret -- and was mostly based on the male gaze. So Grant set out to create a new experience and POV for the category – one she called "Leisurée" (merging the best elements of lingerie, swim and activewear) – and she launched Lively. Lively represents a movement and a lifestyle that has helped the brand cultivate an engaged, enthusiastic community of over 140K ambassadors. Its inclusive size range and affordable price point add to the brand's accessibility. Some exciting moments for the brand include getting acquired for over $100M, and its recent launch in Target stores nationwide. Five years and four stores later, Lively is just getting started. I chat with Michelle about how she came up with the concept for Lively, how the men's shaving brand Harry's inspired Lively's buzzy, disruptive launch, and why she loves to "live in Beta". Michelle Cordeiro Grant, founder and CEO of Lively activewear-inspired lingerie, talks about how she built her amazing brand. She shares her insights on creating a community of over 135,000 brand ambassadors, what she learned from the corporate fashion companies and startups that she worked with before she became an entrepreneur, how she came up with her brand name, and more. There’s a big difference between creating a following and cultivating a community. And I think it's safe to say that most big brands are only interested in followers. They want to build big lists. They want big follower counts. They want more and more eyeballs on their product so they can sell more. It’s more about the product than it is about the people. But what if you want to break the rules, ditch the status quo, and do something bold and different instead? That’s exactly what my guest today is doing and it’s what’s setting her brand apart. Michelle Cordeiro Grant founded LIVELY in 2016. Her idea was for a brand of lingerie, loungewear, and swim that was a reflection of its community. From the beginning, they were committed to creating an ambassador program that wasn't concerned with follower counts. Instead, they focused on women who were living LIVELY’s brand values of self-love and self-acceptance. Quality over quantity was where they hedged their bets. And, those bets paid off. Between the time that we had Michelle speak at Rebelle Con back in 2018 and the time of this interview in 2020, LIVELY was acquired for a reported $85 million. Listen to the full episode to hear: The story behind when Michelle realized there was a gap in the space of marketing and fashion that celebrated women as individuals—and thus LIVELY was born Why LIVELY’s brand ambassador program celebrates women who are passionate about living a purposeful, competent life rather than by demographics What inspired Michelle to start the LIVELY podcast, No Makeup Needed How Michelle pivoted in 2020 from planning to expand retail to launching loungewear and creating content around being comfy at home and how to take care of yourself Learn more about Michelle Cordeiro Grant: LIVELY The LIVELY Podcast: No Makeup Needed Follow Michelle on Instagram LIVELY on Facebook LIVELY on Instagram LIVELY on Twitter LIVELY on Pinterest Rebelle Member Spotlight – Elisabeth Edelman: Golden Word Golden Word on Instagram Learn more about Shannon Siriano Greenwood: Rebelle Community Rebelle Con Follow Rebelle Con on Facebook Follow Rebelle Con on Instagram Rebelle Shout Out: Cate Luzio Blair Imani, author of Modern Herstory; follow Blair on Instagram
Despite very few of us wearing a bra since March, Lively has been able to survive (and thrive) throughout 2020 by focusing on creative, subtle shifts in the business. Michelle Cordeiro Grant, Founder and CEO of Lively joins us today to talk about creating the leisuree category, building a raving community, and staying nimble with Lively's brick and mortar presence.
Michelle Cordeiro Grant is the Founder and CEO of Lively, a community and brand that inspires women to live passionately, purposefully and confidently through experiences and products including bras, bralettes, undies, swimwear, loungewear, fragrance and active bras. Michelle launched Lively 2016 and has amassed and cultivated a network of 100,000+ ambassadors, opened four stores, and coined the term “Leisurée,” a whole new category blurring the aesthetic lines of lingerie, active, swim, and loungewear focusing on the best elements of high style and ultimate comfort. She grew the business from its concept stage to $105M acquisition in just a few years, beating the odds of female-founded companies and has not only been able to maintain her business throughout the pandemic but has been able to thrive with record breaking sales due to her leadership. On today’s episode we get into Michelle’s career journey and at what point she decided to make switches throughout her career, why it’s important to let go of what you thought you wanted and pay attention to what actually genuinely excites you and what doesn’t, at what point she had the idea of creating Lively and why she decided to take an intermediate step and work for a startup before taking her first steps in building her own company, tactical ways to build and foster a community and why her team is her biggest driving force.
Back in January, Michelle Cordeiro Grant, CEO and founder of Lively (those cute bras you see on Instagram!), was consumed by ways to expand the brand’s brick and mortar presence. What seemed like a paramount concern quickly changed as the news of coronavirus set in. With shoppers now spending more time online looking for purchases, Michelle decided to embrace the challenge, rather than shy away from it. Taking inspiration from such well-known companies as Apple, Exxon and Disney, all of which started during “periods of correction,” Michelle shares her belief that this is actually a fertile time for business if it can work to meet the needs of consumers. As she says, “This is the time to try a lot [of different things] and break shit,” knowing that each experiment takes you one step closer to success. Thanks for listening! We love our listeners! Michelle coined the term “leisurée” (athleisure + lingerie) after having an idea that bras should be both beautiful AND comfortable, and we love her for it. She took her experience from working at Victoria’s Secret and started a company called LIVELY with the mission to empower women beyond a bra. In this episode you’ll hear: How to succeed without sacrificing your personal well being What a mental muscle is and how to strengthen it Advice she used from Oprah, Michelle Obama, and Tony Robbins to build her business How she grew the brand from 100 ambassadors to 1,000 per week The struggles of mom guilt A confidence hack for when you’re feeling insecure Michelle Cordeiro Grant: @The_MichelleGrant (https://www.instagram.com/the_michellegrant/) LIVELY: wearlively.com (wearlively.com) Julia Stern: @NotMyBestPodcast (instagram.com/notmybestpodcast)
In just 48 months, founder and CEO Michelle Cordeiro Grant flipped her “leisurée” (lingerie and leisure) startup and sold the fledgling company for $85 million. As a former Victoria's Secret executive, Michelle realized that the $13 billion lingerie category in the U.S. alone was dominated by this one brand with one point of view. So she decided to create an inclusive, digital brand to redefine what comfort and sexiness meant to the Millennial woman. Michelle joined Raising The Bar to talk about LIVELY's meteoric three-year rise, the power and persuasion of brand ambassadors, inclusivity playing a big role in the company's identity, and how body positivity is at the forefront of everything they do. Spirit of 608: Fashion, Entrepreneurship, Sustainability + Tech
It's not every day that you meet a startup founder who left a solid corporate job and managed to grow her startup from an idea to solid partnerships with retailers such as Nordstrom and an Instagram following of ~180K in just a few years, but that's exactly what you'll hear happening on this week's episode of the Spirit of 608 podcast. Along with that, the female entrepreneur featured in this show is not only changing the game around women's bras and underwear, but arguably creating an entirely new category - one that emphasizes how women feel in their most basic, intimate garments rather than how they look. What to know Want the backstory on the woman behind Lively and its out-of-the-box approach to bras and underwear? Michelle says, "I was lucky enough to find a role in fashion at Federated Merchandising Group, where I was able to create brands and products for one of the biggest retailers in the world. I instantly fell in love with the entire process — from concept to customer. But in the back of my head, I was still not convinced that a career in fashion could be my life’s profession. After applying and attending law school — two weeks in, I realized my passion really was supporting, creating, and developing these amazing brands. I finally realized that your passion could actually BE your career. While at Victoria’s Secret, I saw that this $13 billion lingerie category in the U.S. alone was dominated by this one brand, with one POV. I knew that one day I was going to create a completely new experience for the bras and undies category, that was inspired by real life: one that could inspire women to embrace their human uniqueness, their individuality, and in doing so allow them live life passionately, purposefully and confidently." When Michelle Cordeiro Grant founded Lively in 2015, she wanted to create a lingerie brand that fit into the lifestyle of the modern woman. In combining design aspects of traditional lingerie, swimwear and athleisure, Cordeiro Grant said Lively has created a new category altogether, which her team refers to as 'leisurée'. Since the company's launch, it has built a massive ambassador program, launched a podcast and started experimenting with physical retail. Cordeiro Grant said the company's move into retail is still in its beta phase, and her team is constantly learning and evolving its retail strategy. On this week's episode of The Glossy Podcast, Hilary Milnes sits down with Michelle Cordeiro Grant, the founder and CEO of Lively, at Shoptalk 2019. They discuss how to break into a crowded market, how Lively's social media channels have become a major part of its content strategy and where traditional retailers have gone wrong.

Michelle created a movement to empower women from the first piece of clothing they put on in the morning. She shares the secrets of how she built a culture-driven business that has inspired more than 40,000 brand ambassadors, the role of customer feedback in her product strategy, and how she took a direct-to-consumer brand to multiple offline retail locations. Michelle Cordeiro Grant, Founder & CEO of LIVELY, has spent her career creating brands and product for some of the world's largest retailers including Federated, VF Corporation, Limited Brands/ Victoria's Secret and Thrillist Media Group. While working with Victoria's Secret, she learned that the $13B lingerie category, in the US alone, was dominated by a single brand, with a single point of view, so Grant was inspired to create a completely new experience for the category — one she calls Leisurée — and LIVELY was born. 2:45 What prompted you to start the company and this movement 4:42 What are your company’s values and how did it affect how you built the company? 6:25 How did you grow the brand-ambassador community to 40,000 strong? 8:31 How does the brand leverage Instagram? 9:13 Talk about your company's social media strategy. Last fall, eight winners of Shopify’s Build a Bigger Business competition were flown to Tony’s Fiji resort Namale for both group and one-on-one coaching sessions with him. One of the winners was an entrepreneur that Tony personally selected from the entrants – Michelle Cordeiro Grant: the founder of Lively, a brand that is fusing athleisure and lingerie to bring comfort and style to women’s intimates. Michelle began her career with Federated Merchandising Group, creating brands and product for one of the world's largest retailers. Grant instantly fell in love with the entire process from concept to customer, and realized that her passion was in supporting, creating and developing amazing brands and products. Grant spent the tenure of her career with the industry leaders – Federated, VF Corporation and Limited Brands/ Victoria's Secret. Her work at Federated focused on the development of private label brands and at VFC, Grant was responsible for launching global brands like Nautica Women’s Sportswear. Seeing the shift in the market towards e-commerce, Grant moved to Victoria’s Secret where she focused on merchandising and strategy for VS's digital arm. Once Grant realized she wanted to create her own brand, she spent a number of years at a thriving startup, Thrillist Media Group, overseeing their commerce division. By working for top retailers, traveling the globe to meet world class manufacturers and spending a couple years with an incredible startup, Grant learned the importance of creating a strong brand affinity, crafting a quality product and building a dynamic team. While working with Victoria's Secret, she learned that this $13B lingerie category, in the US alone, was dominated by this one brand, with one point of view. Grant was inspired to create a completely new experience for the category – one she coined Leisurée – and so LIVELY was born. In this episode of the Tony Robbins Podcast, Michelle sits down with our host, Ana, to talk about her experience with Tony, and the key insights that she took from this session and put to work in her business. We hear what it’s been like for Michelle to build the Lively brand. We learn how she has strategically leveraged social media, curated an extraordinary customer experience, and created company ethos that serves as their north star when it comes to their most important business decisions. We learn just how Michelle intends to spread her message of body positivity and community all while bringing her customers a brand that makes them look, feel and live confidently.
Nobody knows how to scale a business through community quite like Michelle Cordeiro Grant. After spending years working at Victoria's Secret, Michelle saw an opportunity to disrupt the market and create a brand for women by women. She knew that the $13 billion lingerie market was controlled by men and it showed in visuals and the ways lingerie brands spoke to women. She launched lingerie as an antidote to the push up bras and ‘fantasy' looks designed to appeal to men, and founded the business with a commitment to champion women, but also take note of what they need to feel their best and in real time. We talk about why Lively is creating a movement, and not just a product, how they launched with 130,000 email subscribers and an ambassador before anyone knew what the business really was and the systems she's put into place to help the business scale and fast. She shares why she refuses to have sales, her thought process with risk taking, and her unique approach to competition.
