A. "Swept Away" Is this an emergency episode of the podcast? Kind of. And by kind of, I mean...yes. It is. It's actually quite urgent because art is at stake and without art, we have nothing. This show is about the current creative moment in an artist's life and on that front, this episode couldn't be more on the nose. My guest today on the show is currently starring in a Broadway production that, in spite of its massive critical praise, is set to shut down prematurely on December 29th. We have a lot to go over, but the thesis of the show today is we don't want this production to get Swept Away. Adrian Blake Enscoe is currently starring on Broadway in the musical Swept Away, which is based on the Avett Brothers' album Mignonette and written by John Logan. Centered around a group of sailors who have capsized while on a whale expedition, the show opened up to rave reviews from The Washington Post, Entertainment Weekly, The Wall Street Journal, The Daily Beast, The Wrap and Deadline. So the question is, if the show has been crushing it, why is it closing early? Well, that's what we're here to talk about today. The New York-born Enscoe has been on the show before with his band Bandits On The Run, and he's a lovely guy and it's great to see him again, but this chat is a sobering reminder that those who create art need you to support it. www.sweptawaymusical.com www.bombshellradio.com (http://www.bombshellradio.com) www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alexgreenbooks.com) IG: @emberspodcast Bluelsky: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com (mailto:editor@stereoembersmagazine.com)
Imagina una novela de naufragio, canibalismo y una coincidencia tan asombrosa que desafía toda lógica. En 1838, Poe escribió sobre un joven llamado Richard Parker, que se convirtió en víctima de un terrible destino.

Classic Mignonette sauce is a simple and flavorful accompaniment for fresh oysters, known for its tangy and slightly sweet taste. Here's a traditional recipe for making Mignonette sauce: Ingredients: 1/2 cup red wine vinegar 2 tablespoons finely minced shallots 1 teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper Optional: a pinch of salt to taste Instructions: In a small bowl, combine the red wine vinegar, finely minced shallots, cracked and black pepper,. Stir well to mix all the ingredients together. Taste the Mignonette sauce and adjust the seasoning if necessary. If desired, add a pinch of salt to enhance the flavors. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a lid and refrigerate the Mignonette sauce for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together. Before serving, give the Mignonette sauce a final stir to ensure all the ingredients are well combined. To serve, spoon a small amount of the Mignonette sauce over freshly shucked oysters on the half-shell just before eating. Alternatively, serve the Mignonette sauce alongside the oysters in a small dish for dipping. Mignonette sauce is best when made fresh and served immediately, but it can be stored in the refrigerator for up to a week in an airtight container. Give the sauce a quick stir before using it to refresh the flavors. Feel free to customize the Mignonette sauce to your taste preferences by adjusting the quantities of shallots, black pepper, . Some variations include adding minced fresh herbs such as parsley, chives, or tarragon for added flavor complexity.

Brandi starts us off with the mysterious death of Dee Dee Jackson. Dee Dee was at her boyfriend's house late one night in 1994 when she passed away. Her boyfriend, Don Bohana, told police that she'd drowned in his pool after a night of heavy drinking. But that explanation sounded fishy to Dee Dee's family. They said that Dee Dee had never learned to swim. She was terrified of water. There was no way that she'd willingly gotten in the pool that night. Then Kristin tells a dark, old time-y tale that made a big impact on the justice system. The crew of the Mignonette was probably doomed from the start. The yacht wasn't built for long, arduous voyages, but the crew had been paid to sail it nearly 15,000 miles. So they tried. When a wave did irreparable damage to the ship, it sank in less than five minutes. The crew of four managed to get on a lifeboat, but with no fresh water and just two tins of turnips, they knew they couldn't last long. After approximately 20 days at sea, they resorted to cannibalism. And now for a note about our process. For each episode, Kristin reads a bunch of articles, then spits them back out in her very limited vocabulary. Brandi copies and pastes from the best sources on the web. And sometimes Wikipedia. Maybe don't get on the boat. At least not without checking to see if someone has predicted that boat sinking. Because sometimes art imitates life a little too closely and life says "hold my beer" This week Joyce tells us about how the Titanic disaster was *definitely* predicted in a book years before it happened. Nikki is also nautical and booksy with the tragic tale of Richard Parker aboard the Mignonette. He really should have googled himself. Also, we definitely (don't) understand and figured out how to calculate nautical miles.
Warning: this episode of cosmic sponge discusses Cannibalism and contains scenes that some listeners may find disturbing. View discretion is advised.Cannibalisms has been with mankind from the beginning, persisting into the modern era. You might even be surprised to find that Europeans, for a time, normalized cannibalisms as a means to treat various ailments. Stories from Scotland recount a family of bandits which killed and ate their victims in sea cave of horrors. Did cases of survival after disasters at sea and airplane crashes lead to cannibalisms and would the Cosmic Sponge guys resort to cannibalisms if faced with a similar choice? The answer, surprisingly, comes down to the available spices and condiments.Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/cosmicsponge)

Neil Hanson is one of the most interesting people we know. He's written books on World War I, the Spanish Armada, and the fire that destroyed London in 1666. He once teamed up with history's greatest treasure hunter to tell the story of retrieving over $100 million in gold from a sunken Soviet ship in the arctic. He's been the owner of the highest Inn in all of Great Britain. And, in 1999 he published a book called The Custom of the Sea, which tells the story of a shipwrecked crew that was put on trial in London after resorting to cannibalism. Their ship, which fell victim to forty-foot waves off the coast of Africa in 1884, was named the Mignonette, and Hanson's book was so good that in 2004 it inspired an album by an up-and-coming group of musicians called The Avett Brothers. This is a rebroadcast of an episode that originally aired on April 24, 2017. This episode was edited by Gary Fletcher. The Road to Now is part of the Osiris Podcast Network.

Is murder ever justified? Yes, you say, it it's self defense. I agree but what if you take self defense out of the equation? Maybe you are thinking, well if the person is a murderer themselves and that person is sentenced to death. That might be ok, too. Are there more instances where murder is justified? The sailor in the story I'm about to share with you believed that it was. He hoped others would believe him too. Today's case is about sailors aboard the Mignonette who did something so terrible, they feared for their own souls. It's our twentieth episode! This week, we invited our friend and journalist Annabelle Timsit to discuss fictional countries in pop culture, including Panem, Gilead, and Genovia. Annabelle also shares the reasons she loves the Bachelor franchise, and why we should all watch. This is our last episode of 2020 - we'll see you all in the new year!
We sit down with Daniel Shin, sous-chef at Bar Mignonette, a newly opened restaurant sitting on top of Caribbean favourite, Patois, right near Trinity Bellwoods. Bar Mignonette is a fun new seafood wine bar, where the menu changes on a daily basis, but consists of some great dishes like uni pasta, shrimp cocktails, and the classic pairing of lobster and butter - of course, all of this can be crushed down with some bottles of White Burgundy and other great wine offerings. While the spotlight is on seafood, Daniel's pedigree for gastronomy and cooking covers a lot of different cuisines and geographies, like a culinary polyglot, with formal training in both Italy and Japan. We learn about what it's like to have the best soba of your life, the art of drinking coffee before a siesta power nap, what it's like to work in a Michelin-starred restaurant, and how Toronto can improve as a food city. You can learn more about Bar Mignonette at @barmignonette on Instagram.
The ship, which fell victim to forty-foot waves off the coast of Africa in 1884, was named the Mignonette, and Hanson's book was so good that in 2004 it inspired an album by an up-and-coming group of musicians called The Avett Brothers. How could someone turn a gruesome tale of cannibalism into an inspirational work of history? How do you track down the sources that allow you to answer so many questions about history? And how does one individual accomplish so much in one life? In this episode of The Road to Now, we get the answers in our conversation with Neil Hanson.
