Deep in the Colorado River, monsters lurk in the murky waters — monster fish, that is, some the size of large person. But they aren't invulnerable. Today on City Cast Las Vegas, co-host Dayvid Figler talks with National Geographic channel host Zeb Hogan, co-author of Chasing Giants, a new book about the world's biggest freshwater fish. Zeb grew up on the Colorado, but by the time he was paddling on its waters, most of the truly big fish on our stretch of the lower Colorado had already died out. Zeb explains why monster fish are indicator species of our river's health, and how some of our massive native fish have recently started to make a comeback. We're on social media! This week I'm chatting to legendary tv angler Jeremy wade, This the last in of a series of podcasts this month talking to influential and celebrity anglers. I'm also working on a crowd funder this month Britains hidden fishes which I'm aiming to make a 1 hour long film on British fish, think blue planet but a much smaller budget and coincidentally Jeremy is narrating that film, there's a link to that in the description. I remember watching Jeremy in jungle hooks a few years before he blew up on river monsters and it was such breath of fresh air seeing all these weird and wonderful fish being caught by someone who was engaging and clearly invested in these animals. Jeremy has spent nearly 40 years trailing around the world catching fish and has since written books and started in many tv shows like river monsters, dark waters and mighty rivers. We talk about about the monsters that eluded him, his break into television and a catfish that swims up your penis along with loads of other adventures he's been on. Being slighted by the US Ski Team in 1978, Lonny Vanatta spent the rest of his career trying to prove something and that he did. Turning pro he became the top American on the world pro ski racing tour for many years. He won 20 races and won the slalom title in 1980 - finishing 3rd overall in the season title.Even though he was smaller in stature and weight than most of his competition, he had the heart of a lion that many people feared. His success was profound and was inducted into the Colorado Ski Hall of Fame in 2018. Throughout his career, his passion for hunting was paramount, as intense as it was for smashing his competitors on a race hill. His archery stone sheep in 1989 was the largest Pope and Young sheep ever killed at the time. He completed the grand slam of North American sheep - only the 54th bowhunter at the time to do so. He has 34 Pope and Young animals to his name. Lonny recently sold his successful outfitting business of 31 years.Vanatta is a cancer survivor but continues to attack life the only way he knows, head on - a true inspiration to all.

Very rarely do you hear of a young person doing something so consistently outstanding that the old timers open their eyes and say - "WOW!"This episode is the story of a young Jared Raskob who was constantly catching monster fish. Young people have young eyes but Jared's are legendary, and elder anglers sought him out. He was doing extraordinary things on the flats.Raskob's reputation erupted and shook up the status quo. I'd left the game by then but from afar admired what I'd been hearing. He'd jumped into the tournament fray and won, and won everything! I finally met this shining star and enjoyed everything about him. He was cool, fun, and assertive - his 6' something frame had a dominant presence. On this episode we sat down with this Jedi and laughed, and spoke of many things including the new millennials soon to run everyone over.Game changers don't come around very often but this one is a legend in the making!
Many people know Jeff Maggio as a social media fishing celebrity but the few people who really know his true core will tell you that Jeff is a passionate, heartfelt, real guy who takes his job very seriously. Lunker Dog, as many people call him after coining that name himself, is not only one of the best inshore bait guides in Broward & Dade County but just an all around upbeat, enjoyable person that will constantly make you laugh. The Mullet Run in South Florida is a spectacle to see with thousands and thousands of bait being pushed down with colder temperatures and monster tarpon, snook, and jacks. Jeff is THE man when it comes to fishing around the mullet run. If you are looking for a quiet, remote fishing trip with back bays, mangrove shorelines, and herons flying low over your head, this is not your ideal trip. The Mullet run is complete insanity - non stop action with vessels coming at you in all directions while dodging 8/0 treble hooks being flung from shore. Everyone wants in on the action and for good reason. In the last couple of years, there has been a dramatic rise in sewage leaks in the state of Florida. Most recently, a couple of leaks in Broward County caused millions of gallons of sewage to be spewed in the Intracoastal waterways leaving thousands of fish dead and our precious waters ruined. Jeff has been using his voice to hold the city and elected officials accountable for their actions. He has spearheaded a couple of protests and has worked tirelessly to help people understand the disasters that are happening in our own back yard.I really enjoyed our conversation with Jeff. He is an intense fisherman with a fiery heart for conservation. I can’t wait for the next time we get to fish together. If you'd like to hear more from Jeff, check out his podcast - Reel Guy Podcast

This episode is brought to you by the retired aquarium/tropical fish keeping podcast ''Aquatic Wetline''. This episode aired 5 years ago in 2014. Fish keepers from the United States and all around the world love monster fish! Fish such as pacus, red tail catfish, Iridescent sharks and even Arapamia are sold to fish hobbyists! The unsuspecting fish hobbyist raises these fish to monsturous sizes and then have a hard time rehoming these fish due to their large sizes. Many of these fish wind up in local waterways where they can become invasive or are dumped to local fish stores or aquariums. In the USA, a fish rescue exsits called Ohio Fish Rescue. In the United Kingdown, there is River Giants! Join Aqua Alex Cardinale and Crayfish Man James Jones as they interview Nathan, the owner of River Giants!About River Giants:River Giants are a new, unique and specialist re-homing sanctuary based in Maidstone in Kent. We re-home some amazing, wonderful fish that span the globe. There's something primal that leads people to wonder what's lurking below the surface of any large river. Humans seem to be hardwired to be both fascinated by, and somewhat fearful of, Volkswagen-sized catfish. There’s something in the back of everyone’s mind when overlooking a large river, lake or bay. “What’s lurking below the surface?” Grainy images of the Loch Ness Monster feed those thoughts. In the wild, these amazing animals live in remote locations from Australia’s Outback to the steamy jungles of southeast Asia. You will be thrilled by the prehistoric-looking arapaima, weird-looking wallago, giant freshwater rays and other BIG fish. Our fish collection includes rare and exotic Species of all sizes, BIG FISH with BIG APPETITES for BIG TANKS. It's not easy for most people or other "regular" fish keepers to understand why we maintain this type of collection and spare no expense on this fascinating hobby. Like us on Facebook:

Our first featured fish of 2019 is a catfish that hails from Southeast Asia including Mekong, Thailand, and Laos. They are a catfish species that looks like a shark and is very active. It is a member of the Pangasius fish family. This week's (Febuary 6th to Febuary 10th) Fish of the Week is the Iridescent Shark (Pangasianodon Hypophthalmus).Find out what you need to know about the monsters Iridescent Sharks turn out to be! Many freshwater fish in the aquarium hobby often grow too large for most aquarists to house. Fish like pacu, red tail catfish, Irredescent sharks, and the like are cute when small but grow up as gigantic monsters reaching several feet in length. What is a aquarist going to do with a fish that reaches up to 28'' plus? Often times local fish stores and even public aquariums will turn these fish away due to lack of tank space. It usually results in the fish being killed or released into our waters where they can become invasive. Two hobbyists located in Ohio have turned a big part of their house into a ''Monster Fish Mansion'' where they have several huge aquariums and ponds with tank sizes like a 4400 gallon aquarium. They provide these monster fish forever homes in the gigantic aquariums and ponds. For the fish that they can't provide long term homes, they will find homes for them. It is an incredible thing that these two hobbyists do for the aquarium hobby. If you live in Ohio and have fish that need new homes? They will adapt!Big Rich Price and Josh Price of Ohio Fish Rescue join Aqua Alex for a discussion on monster fish, taking in monster fish, and some awesome tropical fish chat!!!Planned for the show:~ How did Rich get into the Hobby?~ When did OFR start?~ Monster fish chatEnjoy the show!!! Some tropical fish have the potential to grow to epic enormous sizes!! These tropical fish species can reach sizes of 3 feet to 5 feet. We call these species of fish ''TANKBUSTERS''! We call them tankbusters because they can literally bust a fish tank wide open when spooked. Believe it or not, it has happened. However, the term tank buster mainly implies that the fish gets too big for any home aquarium.Welcome to the first ''series'' on Monster Fish Keepers!! I will be doing some episodes on different tank busting species! On this episode, I will be focusing on the most common tank busters! These are fish that you will see at your local fish store as cute babies and you will want to take them home and raise them! Many people don't realize the size that these fish get!Red Belly Pacu are often called vegan piranhas. As juveniles they look like baby red belly piranha. But, pacus grow BIG QUICK and outgrow most aquariums. Reaching around 3 feet, pacus are a schooling fish and require 300 gallons and bigger.Iridescent Sharks are one fish that do not belong in the aquarium hobby. They grow up to 4 feet, are schooling fish, and super skittish!Red Tail Catfish are super cute! But they grow up to five feet and eat everything in site.Find out more about these species as your host Monster Alex dives into the topic of TankBusters!LIKE US ON FACEBOOK:https://www.facebook.com/aquaalexcardinale/Subscribe to US ON I-TUNES:https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/aquarium-hobbyist-podcast/id1254532480?mt=2SUPPORT AQUA ALEX ON PATREON:https://www.patreon.com/aquariumhobbyistpodcast
Time for another episode of Monster Fish Keepers here on Aquarium Hobbyist Podcast. October is Monster Fish Month where I, Aqua Alex will discuss the monster fish that come out to hunt and eat the little fish. No little fish is safe as monsters of all kind, all sizes, and all personalities come out to prey. In 2015, on Aquatic Wetline, Aqua Alex hosted a special fish keeper debut with his friend William T Hannaford aka Discus Man Willy T. The debate was called Monster Fish VS Feeder Fish (smaller community fish). We went head to head debating both sides of the hobby and which one is the best. It was a kind of goofy but fun show and definitely worth playing here on Aquarium Hobbyist Podcast! Two (2) best friends and fish keeper's with different beliefs go head to head in an aquarium ''no holds barred'' debate. In one corner stands Aqua Alex who represents Monster fish and in the other corner stands Discus Man Willy T who represents community fish which are referred to as feeders!Which fish are better? Monster fish or feeder fish?TOPICS:DO MONSTER FISH BELONG IN THE AQUARIUM HOBBY?IS IT MORALLY RIGHT TO FEED SMALL COMMUNITY FISH TO MONSTER FISH?WHY DOES AQUA ALEX LIKE MONSTERS AND DISCUS MAN WILLY T LIKE FEEDER FISH?PLUS, WHAT SIDE OF THE HOBBY WINS? MONSTERS OR COMMUNITY FISH??!!Enjoy the show!!!!Check out and support Aqua Alex on Pateron:https://www.patreon.com/aquariumhobbyistpodcastSupport the show
It's October and that means it's time for the monsters to come out, scare the little fish, and play! All month long on Aquarium Hobbyist Podcast it will be Monster Fish Month as we celebrate Halloween! To kick start Monster Fish Month, I am going to be talking about a fish that comes from South America! This fish can deliver a very painful and toxic sting! Locals fear this fish more than the piranha! What fish can cause more intimidation than a piranha? THE FRESHWATER STINGRAY OF COURSE! Yes, stingrays do live in freshwater! They are related to the sharks and stingrays from saltwater!! DID YOU KNOW THAT THE FRESHWATER STINGRAY IS MORE VENOMOUS THAN THE SALTWATER STINGRAYS!!!To talk about freshwater stingrays, Aqua Alex is proud to welcome Freshwater Stingray Enthusiast Marty Jandura to the show!Marty and Aqua Alex will discuss:~ Keeping StingraysLearn how to take care of freshwater stingrays everything including feeding to tank size and tankmates.Enjoy the show and let the MONSTERS ROAR!!!Support the show
