Space Week Ireland is an annual event celebrating Ireland's involvement in space exploration, innovation, and science. Coordinated by MTU Blackrock Castle Observatory, it runs in tandem with World Space Week, which aims to inspire the public, especially young people, to look to the stars and consider the impact of space research on life on Earth. This year, from 4th to 10th October, Space Week Ireland will embrace the global theme of 'Space and Climate', exploring the crucial intersection of space exploration and climate action. A series of events will raise awareness about how space science and technology can play a vital role in combating climate change. A flagship event, which puts this theme into focus, will take place at Explorium in Dublin on Wednesday, 9th October, from 11 am -1 pm, focusing on how space research can inform climate action. The event will feature insights from leading science communicator Dr Niamh Shaw, as well as a talk and Q&A session with former NASA astronaut Steve Swanson. Attendees will also experience Explorium's climate change-themed 'Cool It' interactive exhibition, which showcases innovative solutions to climate issues and demonstrates how lessons from space exploration can be applied here on Earth. The exhibition takes participants on a 40-minute journey that starts with an energy consumption questionnaire and an impactful climate video. Guests will then enter a model world where they face a challenge - a race to 2050 - and score points based on their choices. At the end, scores are uploaded to a spaceship, revealing the changes needed to achieve a more sustainable future. Participants will even learn how their actions can help save trees and mitigate environmental impact. Mark Langtry, Head of Sport and Science at Explorium, will open the event. Mark has studied Theoretical Physics and Climate Science so Space and Climate is very important to him and his work. He says, "I'm thrilled that this year's Space Week is centred on Space and Climate Change. Space exploration can teach us more about other worlds, but also provides a unique view of our own planet, using earth observation satellites to monitor climate change and track its impact. Our new exhibition 'Cool It' explores our changing climate and empowers us to make a positive change through fun interactive games and challenges. We hope during Space Week everyone can come and enjoy the experience." Rob O'Sullivan, National Outreach Coordinator for Space Week Ireland, commented: "In line with the broader World Space Week theme, Space Week Ireland aims to draw connections between space technologies, planetary observation, and environmental sustainability. From satellites monitoring Earth's climate to the innovations pioneered on the International Space Station (ISS), space research offers a unique perspective on how we can tackle the challenges of climate change on a planetary scale." Throughout Space Week Ireland, the team will be joined by former NASA Astronaut Steve Swanson as they embark on a national roadshow, starting at MTU Blackrock Castle Observatory in Cork and making stops in Galway, Offaly, Kildare, and Dublin. These events, including the flagship Dublin event on 9th October, will illustrate how space technologies, such as Earth Observation satellites, help us monitor climate change on a planetary scale. This data is critical for tracking the health of our atmosphere, oceans, and ecosystems, enabling better-informed climate action policies. Beyond this tour, Space Week Ireland will feature a variety of activities across the country, providing opportunities for all ages to engage with space science. For a full list of events or to learn how to host your own, visit spaceweek.ie. The public can keep up to date with the Space Week Ireland Road Trip virtually on the Blackrock Castle Observatory YouTube channel and are advised to subscribe in advance to receive live stream notifications from each location. We are big proponents of the 12-step program. There is also a spiritual component of the program. For many people this can be a big turn off. Other people have trouble reconciling the difference between spirituality and their individual religion. We talk about all of this today with our guest Elliott Hughes. Elliott is the National Outreach Coordinator for Chapel Hill Medical Detox. In this episode, he shares his struggles with getting sober with just religion and how he didn’t accept the spiritual components of the 12-step program. Then he shares how he learned to balance the two. He needed the support, community, and action of the program, which then allowed him to practice a stronger faith in his own religion. Show Notes [03:43] Elliott grew up in Indiana. He went to church. He was a decent student. He was an athlete. [04:35] in spite of his Christian background, he fell into the grips of addiction. [04:43] He began drinking and smoking pot at 14. Things progressed until he found heroin, which really brought him to his knees. [07:02] Elliott doesn't think it was rebelling against church that made him start partying. [07:40] He just didn't have a solid foundation and chose the route of partying. [09:54] The 12-step program talks about a power greater than yourself. It's a spiritual program not a religious program. [11:44] Ben found church in his heart and grasps on to the fact that God spoke to him through other people. [13:11] You can get sober even if God isn't your path. [14:07] When Elliott meets one-on-one, he doesn't want to dilute the message of getting sober by preaching his beliefs. [16:36] Ben was a late bloomer with the higher power thing. [17:36] Elliott tried to get sober through church for years. [18:05] Elliott tried a 12-step program and it didn't work. Then he started a faith-based program, but just going to church wasn't enough. [19:25] It takes more than just going to church. You need a program combined with spirituality. [20:09] There is a sense of community in the sober community. It's hard to find like minded people at church who are also struggling with addiction unless you tell everyone about it. [21:07] With the 12-step program you do more than just attend meetings you have to take action. [21:20] There's a sense of community with like-minded people you all have the same goals and there's a service aspect. There is also the sponsor and sponsee part. [23:02] The 12 steps and the program gave me a practical way to take a look at myself that going to church didn't. [24:42] When people aren't vulnerable and honest, you can't see their transformation. [28:19] Faith without works is dead. [31:22] What Ben knows is from experience. We can use our struggles for His glory. [32:57] Elliott struggles between the balance of spiritual and religious. It's important for him to have the balance and feed himself spiritually. [34:40] Someone who hasn't struggled with addiction can't help him like someone who has could. [36:49] The difference between religion and spirituality for Elliott was a shift in his heart. [39:06] Spirituality is about the relationship you build with your higher power. [43:11] If people are out there struggling, they should just hold on because they can recover. IVN Election Reform Editor Shawn Griffiths recently spoke with Nick Brana, who is the former National Outreach Coordinator for the 2016 Bernie Sanders presidential campaign, and is the founder of the Movement for a People's Party. Shawn and Nick discuss a new rule proposed by the DNC Rules and Bylaws Committee that would essentially require presidential candidates to declare their unconditional loyalty to the party establishment. The rule blocks out independent-minded Democrats and candidates like Bernie Sanders who do not toe the party line 100% of the time. You thought superdelegates were bad? Imagine a rule that allows one man to decide who can and cannot be a candidate. Under this rule, Tom Perez is given that power. So if you don't fall in line with the establishment, you can't run. Nick and Shawn also discuss Bernie Sanders' silence on the party's actions against him and millions of voters, and the incentive that gave the party to continue down the path it followed in the 2016 elections -- rigging the primaries, limiting debates, giving one campaign full control of the party, etc. You won't want to miss this interview. Before 2017 ended, I sat down with Army Veteran Danielle Corazza for an interview. At the time, Danielle had been selected for a position at our Center for Women Veterans but had not yet started. Danielle has since started her role as National Outreach Coordinator for CWV. You can follow news and announcements out of the CWV on their web page. Danielle Corazza is a lifelong member of the military community (both parents served on active duty in the Marine Corps and Navy), she entered onto active duty service with the US Army at the age of 17, completing her 3 year term of service as an E-4P (Specialist) and transferring into the Army National Guard for an additional two years. Due to service-related medical conditions, she left the National Guard to pursue her education when her disability rating was awarded. She availed herself of Vocational Rehabilitation services and the Montgomery GI Bill in order to complete a Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources and Business Administration from Strayer University, and a Master’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Massachusetts, adding a certificate from Georgetown University in Nonprofit Executive Management in 2014. Danielle and I talked about her service in the military, being a VA patient, being a caregiver, entrepreneurship, and much more.

Janessa Goldbeck is the Director of Membership at the Genocide Intervention Network, a nonprofit organization that provides individuals and communities with the tools to prevent and stop genocide. As a college student, Janessa served as the first National Outreach Coordinator for STAND, helping to build what started as a group of students at a few schools nationwide into an international clearinghouse organization for student anti-genocide activism.  In just two years, Janessa served a pivotal role in expanding STAND to more than 850 schools worldwide and merging the organization with the Genocide Intervention Network. Since graduation, she has produced several short films on the student anti-genocide movement, and appeared at numerous conferences, forums and trainings on behalf of STAND and the Genocide Intervention Network. Her work now focuses on building a constituency of conscience among all age groups. Janessa is a graduate of Northwestern University and holds a degree in Magazine Journalism and a certificate in African Studies, as well as a certificate in Sustainable Development from the School for International Training in Uganda. You can read a transcript of this interview on my blog Have Fun * Do Good.
