Mark Raymond has a deep-rooted history of serving the community. Building on the legacy of his grandfather, A.P. Tureaud, Mark has played a vital role in advancing various equity-centered efforts across the Greater New Orleans area and beyond. From renaming historic streets and landmarks in New Orleans to creating a more accessible and robust rehabilitative health infrastructure in the Gulf South, Mark's aptitude for cultivating relationships and driving coordinated, healing-centered change has been vital to the advancement of those most disadvantaged. This is the link to the Split Second Foundation, https://www.splitsecondfoundation.org/ Mark's commitment to fighting for justice and equity started as a child but was intensified following a shallow diving accident in 2016, in which he damaged the vertebrae by the base of his neck and lost the ability to walk. For Mark, this life-changing experience illuminated the reality of disparities in access, and there were very few community resources to turn to for help. His new disability and lack of support ultimately pushed him to advocate for millions of others by transforming the split-second that led to his injury into a life filled with awareness, hope, and action. He founded Split Second Foundation to make people aware of a growing population of individuals impacted by disability, advocate for their rights, fund cutting-edge research, and provide clear-cut steps to immediately improve their quality of life.To date, Mark's impact on inclusive health and human services, as well as justice-driven policy work, has been substantial. Mark was able to open Split Second Fitness, which is the first inclusive gym in Louisiana, with an intentional focus on people living with paralysis, amputation, or other neurological conditions that impact mobility. He also serves on several federal, state, and local boards and commissions to represent and advocate for people living with disabilities. Notably, Mayor LaToya Cantrell appointed him to the Regional Transit Authority (RTA) New Orleans Board of Commissioners, where he holds the positions of Vice-Chair and Chairman of the Finance Committee overseeing the planning, implementation, and execution of the agency's $109 million budget.Recently, RTA introduced the first two Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant streetcars on the historical St. Charles streetcar line.Mark's work within the community and through SSF has earned him numerous awards including:*Gambit's “40 Under 40”*New Orleans Magazine's “Ones to Watch”*Millennial Change Makers Award*Xavier University's “40 Under 40”
MaryMac's Doggie Retreat was founded by Courtney McWilliams in the Fall of 2015 due to Courtney needing a pet sitter for her dog, who suffered with severe separation anxiety. Courtney knew that she could not be the only one in the area who found it hard to find a trusted dog sitter who understood pet anxiety and depression. As a Social Worker, Courtney understood how separation anxiety and depression could play a major role in the lives of children; she found this to be true with dogs. Courtney combined her years of experience as Social Worker with her love for dogs together to focus on reducing a dog's anxiety and/or depression while their pet parents are away. She understands how hard it can be to find a sitter who will care for your dog as if it's their own, therefore she focuses on giving each and every dog one on one attention. Realizing that each dog is different, MaryMac's Doggie Retreat does not utilize the one-size fits all approach. Mary Mac's focus in reducing anxiety and depression through specialized enrichment activities that include keeping the dogs in smaller group settings, maintaining a 1 to 5 ratio, structured play time with best friends, individualized attention, and tailored activities designed to stimulate the mind while increasing confidence and self-control. Since opening MaryMac's, Courtney continues to push the boundaries when it comes to engaging her audience and customers. She has since begun speaking to women worldwide about powers of networking and growing their business. She has been featured in The New Orleans Magazine, The Biz Mag, The Southern Jewish Life Mag, HerGrit Mag and a host of many other publications. Technology has changed a lot of occupations. And derailed some careers. Perhaps none more than the career of the professional photographer. What used to be a profession that demanded technical skill and artistic talent, and required specialized equipment – cameras, lenses, and lights – is now something that every single person can do, with a phone. Pics Even when there is still a call for a professional photographer, the very product that the photographer makes has changed. A photographer used to produce a photograph. This was a paper product. Sometimes in a frame. Today, a photograph is most commonly a digital file. It's gone from being a physical thing you could hold in your hand, to what's called Intellectual Property. Local New Orleans photographer Cheryl Gerber has navigated all of these changes. Cheryl started taking photos professionally in 1991, and she's still snapping images of New Orleanians. You've seen Cheryl's work in New Orleans Magazine, Gambit, and many other outlets, as well as in 6 books. Copyright, patents Photographs are like music, books, and movies. They all used to be manufactured objects that came in various forms of hardware. Most recently, music was on CDs, movies were on DVDs, and books were on of paper. If you wanted to listen to music, watch a movie, or read a book, you had to buy them. Now, all these items are intellectual property. They're digital files that live somewhere in the ether. You can get a hold of them on a device that fits easily into the palm of your hand. And, mostly, you don't have to pay much for them. You can even flat out steal some of them. That, of course, is not legal. There is a lot of law that governs intellectual property. Beyond music, books, and photographs, intellectual property encompasses every piece of software that drives every device – from an operating system to a food delivery app – and every single idea and patent that drives practically everything in our lives. The law firm Jones Walker is a major sponsor of Out to Lunch. So, we thought we'd take advantage of that relationship and invite Michael Leachman to have lunch with us. Michael is a partner at Jones Walker. He's a specialist intellectual property attorney. Whether we're consciously aware of it or not, all of us are brushing up against intellectual property multiple times a day. Every time you're on Spotify, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, or even listening to the radio, you're consuming intellectual property that you may – or may not – be paying for. Out to Lunch was recorded live over lunch at Commander's Palace. You can see photos from this show by Jill Lafleur at our website. And meet New Orleans photographer Frank Relle along with Monica Davidson, creator of Crawfish Monica. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In this episode of British Suits & Cowboy Boots, Richard talks with Zella Palmer, Chair & Director of the Dillard University Ray Charles Program in African American Material Culture and one of New Orleans Magazine's 2020 People to Watch. Zella discusses the rich cultural impact that African Americans have made to New Orleans, the United States and the world, specifically highlighting food. She talks about the legacies of slavery, her work preserving African-American culture and educating New Orleans youths about careers in the food and culture industries. Zella also shares the significance of being the third generation in her family to work at an HBCU and why these institutions matter so much. She shares the story of Ray Charles' deep love for New Orleans, and how an offer for him to eat at McDonald's led to the creation of his namesake program at Dillard University. In addition to sharing her recommendations for where to eat mind-blowing creole cuisine, Zella reminisces about her time as a teen in London eating fish and chips, catching a Jamiroquai concert, and pleading with her dad for some pounds to shop at Harrods.A must listen episode about understanding, celebrating and protecting the African-American experience and the diverse cultures that it produced.

Courtney knew that she could not be the only one in the area who found it hard to find a trusted dog sitter who understood pet anxiety and depression. As a Social Worker, Courtney understood how separation anxiety and depression could play a major role in the lives of children; she found this to be true with dogs. Courtney combined her years of experience as Social Worker with her love for dogs together to focus on reducing a dog’s anxiety and/or depression while their pet parents are away. She understands how hard it can be to find a sitter who will care for your dog as if it’s their own, therefore she focuses on giving each and every dog one on one attention. Realizing that each dog is different, MaryMac’s Doggie Retreat does not utilize the one-size fits all approach. We focus in reducing anxiety and depression through specialized enrichment activities that include keeping the dogs in smaller group settings, maintaining a 1 to 5 ratio, structured play time with best friends, individualized attention, and tailored activities designed to stimulate the mind while increasing confidence and self-control. What We Promise: A peace of mind for dog owners when leaving their dogs in our care, especially if their dog is anxious. Safety for all dogs in our care. Consistently educate our staff and pawrents on the latest trends in pet care. Most importantly, have fun!

This week, Amanda speaks with Lisa Tahir, licensed social worker, healer, author, and podcaster. Lisa's new book, The Chiron Effect: Healing Our Core Wounds through Astrology, Empathy and Self-Forgiveness, approaches healing through the unique lens of Chiron, a complex and little understood astrological symbol. Her book is the first-ever written by a therapist to empower individuals and practitioners to identify twelve main areas of core wounding, which directly relate to the placement of Chiron in their birth chart. Lisa talks about the significance of Chiron in one's healing journey, and how it can help us increase our awareness of repeating painful and unconscious behaviors. Through her methodology, we can understand our core wounds from a new perspective and break free from those painful cycles. Lisa also brings up the importance of being kind to yourself, and calming that critical voice that tries to squander any attempt to heal core wounds. Self-compassion and forgiveness play a key role in her approach to healing, and can make all the difference in how we treat ourselves and how we treat others. To purchase Lisa's book, schedule a session with her, or learn more about how Chiron relates to your life, visit nolatherapy.com. She's worked with people all over the world through video chat for over ten years, so she knows how to make the absolute most out of virtual therapy. Great Escape Radio Episode #29: What Makes a Great Story “What makes a great story is what it takes to sell that story. The end goal is to give that story life.” – Lori Allen This week on Great Escape Radio, Lori Allen introduces us to the Editors’ Panel from the 2016 Ultimate Travel Writers Workshop in New Orleans in the first of a three-part series. “Our travel writing workshops are so much fun. I’ve just returned from New Orleans where we were located right on Bourbon Street. It was a great location, a great event with great people and amazing food. All of our workshops are fun but being in New Orleans just kicked it up a notch. There are stories on every corner in New Orleans, “ says Lori. One thing that sets Great Escape Publishing’s travel writing workshops apart from other writing events is the editor’s panel. GEP programs are written and approved by editors every year. Consulting editors means the programs stay up to date with the current trends in travel writing. “Years ago long travel narratives were the norm in travel writing. Today it’s the USA Today style – one page that you can clip out and take with you. Service pieces are in demand: round-ups or 36 hours in a destination are popular styles.” Lori brings in editors each year for an Editors’ Panel at the Ultimate Travel Writer’s Workshop. Hearing first hand from the editors about what sells is the most valuable feature of the workshop aside from sitting down and working on articles with the experts. This year’s panel was no exception. Meet the editors… ***Morgan Packard, an award-winning editor, has been the managing editor for 14 years with New Orleans Magazine. ***Ian Aldrich, editor of Yankee Magazine who started as a freelancer and is now the Deputy Editor. ***Tracey Minkin grew up reading Ian’s magazine and is now the travel editor at Coastal Living, a publication featuring upscale travel. ***Misty Milioto, Editor in Chief at New Orleans Living, has been an editor and writer for 16+ years who worked her way up from blogging. Listen in to get their opinion on “what makes for a great story from an editor’s point of view” with specific examples from their publications. For more information on how you can get started with travel writing, go to www.greatescapepublishing.com/start/travelwriting and sign up for a special video presentation. “The Songbird of New Orleans,” award-winning jazz singerRobin Barnes is preparing to spread her soulful song beyond The Big Easy. On August 26, the powerfully-voiced siren who was named the Favorite New Orleans Musician earlier this year by New Orleans Magazine will issue her second EP, “Songbird Sessions,” on the Rhythm Elevation Records label. Barnes and bassist Pat Casey produced the intimate five-song acoustic jazz date of standards and gems made famous by her seminal influences such as New Orleans icons Allen Toussaint and Irma Thomas. The first track being serviced to radio is Barnes’s smoldering and sultry rendition of Thomas’s “Ruler of My Heart.” Backed by Casey, drummers and percussionists Herlin Riley and Shannon Powell, and guitarists Steve Masakowski and Danny Abel, Barnes soars mightily on “Songbird Sessions.” Confident and assured, the twenty-something chanteuse unveils unadulterated passion with poise and in complete command on the rousing spiritual “Great Day” and the gentle jazz lullaby “Little Jazz Bird.” Barnes’s arresting take of Van Morrison’s “The Way Young Lovers Do” haunts. On the classic “My Funny Valentine,” her aching, delicate croon depicts an intrepid artist confronting her fragility head on. “’Songbird Sessions’ is about spreading my wings and singing with my soul. This little jazz bird is taking a leap and following a dream. The EP is made up of songs that I've been passionate about while growing up in New Orleans

Que Hefner, his trio NOLA Fam Que, Mani, and J Smoke and their wider collective, NOLA Familia, are some of the freshest voices to come out of hip hop New Orleans since the heady days of Ca h Money and Master P. From High Times NOLA Fam s infectious romp about smoking pot to the moody, politically and musically subversive Sex Religion, these guys know how to have fun and how to get serious without having to go anywhere near jail for credibilty. Que talks about women, weed, and gentrification, but, unlike a lot of rappers, not in that order. Jose Calderon has made the list of New Orleans Magazine s Top Doctors. And he s also on our list of the best looking. Actually, he s at the top of that list. Jose is a noted psychiatrist in the field of Mind Body medicine, which includes women and weed but not gentrification . Jose works South of the border, dealing with the stress caused by living in the anarchic Mexican drug ruled killing fields, to the comparatively calm streets of New Orleans and the hallowed halls of LSU medical school. Talking of killing fields, we can thank international terrorism for having Cheryl DalPozzal on today s show. Cheryl was at the cutting edge of the telecom technological revolution when Al Qaeda destroyed the World Trade Center in New York and with it the company she was working for. So Cheryl headed South, back to New Orleans where she went to Tulane, and has jumped into NOLA life with both feet. Check out her whole new world as a photographer here.
