Seth Shelden '98 is the United Nations liaison for the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN). The coalition was awarded the Nobel Peace Price in 2017 for its work to bring about the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW). The TPNW outlaws the use, testing, development, production, possession, and transfer of nuclear weapons, and it outlines how countries can destroy their own stockpiles. It also stipulates victim assistance, environmental remediation, and other humanitarian efforts as part of each participating country's obligations.Seth is also a partner in the law firm of Farkas & Neurman, an adjunct professor at the City University of New York School of Law, and vice president of Ground UP Productions. Nathan Law is a young Hong Kong democracy activist, currently in exile in London.    A key figure in the Umbrella Movement in 2014, Nathan and other student leaders founded the pro-democracy Demosistō party in 2016. Nathan then became the youngest Legislative Councillor in history, but his election was overturned on spurious grounds by the Chinese Communist Party. He was later jailed for his participation in the Umbrella Movement as part of a government crackdown. After the recent introduction of the ‘National Security Laws' by the CCP, Nathan left Hong Kong due to fears for his safety. He continues to speak up for Hong Kong people at international events and forums and is a global leader of their movement. A nominee for the Nobel Peace Price, in 2020 Nathan was named as one of the 100 most influential people in the world by TIME Magazine.   Misha Zelinsky caught up with Nathan for a chinwag about his path to activism, taking on the might of the CCP in elections and civil demonstrations, how the democracy movement has been crushed by the CCP under the cover of COVID-19, why democracy matters to everyone everywhere, what the democratic world must do to help Hong Kong, the battle for freedom in Taiwan and how he hopes to return home one day.    It's a truly inspiring chat and we loved having Nathan on the show. Nathan is an absolute hero, an incredibly brave young man who is not yet 30 and yet has already achieved so much. Nathan is someone we should all look up to in the global struggle for democratic freedom.    Apologies for the gap in episodes, but we plan to have more regular Diplomates content coming atya down the line! My conversation with yours truly (ME): I recently read "The Book of Joy", by Douglas Abrams, a nonfiction New York Times bestseller in 2016. This book chronicles a one week visit between the Dalai Lama and the Archbishop Desmond Tutu - both of whom won the Nobel Peace Price in the 1980s. During this one week visit, these two spiritual and insightful men explore how we human-beings can find lasting happiness. I recently found myself asking friends, mentors and myself whether why we (and I) weren't more happy. Even given the current global pandemic, I felt like I had a lot to be grateful for and a lot of reasons to be happier than I felt inside. This book, with a little help from some conversations I had with some insightful friends, gave me some perspective and some useful hints. We can find some simple guidance in the biblical verse, "love your neighbor as yourself". Truly loving ourselves is a simple concept with many layers of complex depth. But, if we can find that love for ourselves, and then apply that love, that empathy, that understanding of our neighbors, we would all find much more joy... and the world would be a much better place. I listened carefully to President Biden's inauguration speech where he implored all Americans, and indeed all human beings to see each other with compassion. To walk in each others' shoes. This is the same concept. I found "The Book of Joy" to be an uplifting and thought provoking book and an easy read in trying times. I know that I have found a little more joy in my heart since reading it and applying its concepts.

Tonight we started reading letter 16 to the young Anastasia. The Saint works very hard to bring this young woman to clarity about the true goal of life. One might even say that he is stern or sarcastic with her and in his humor. But he wants her to know the precious gift and the freedom of living for God completely and understanding that we do not have to torture ourselves by asking what we should do in this life. It is perfectly clear, our goal is God and living in accord with His will and coming to share in His eternal life. This is so simple and comprehensive that there's a part of us, I think, that fears it, to have our life guided by one thing, the desire for God.   We tend to live our lives in the abstract, what needs to be done out there, what great thing can I be doing or accomplish, what will give me identity and purpose in this world. When this happens we lose sight of our dignity and destiny in Christ. We are made for the kingdom. We are made to be sons and daughters not of this world but of God.   ------ Text of chat during the Zoom meeting:   00:30:27 carolnypaver: When he says someone has opened her eyes, it sounds kind of like Adam and Eve after they sinned. Is that what he is referring to? 00:37:04 Fr. John (Ivan) Chirovsky: I thought it was a little sarcastic. She's saying she's vegetating at home, doing nothing important, whereas in reality she was learning how to practice holiness and the virtues within the home environment and duties of interacting with family, so in saying "only now has someone opened your eyes" St Theophan is sort of like imitating God when God said to Adam and Eve, "O you're naked, but who told you that you were naked?" 00:38:43 carolnypaver: Thank you! 00:43:41 Eric Williams: Perhaps I misheard, but I don't think you have the Latin meaning of "infatuate" right. It means "to make foolish", from the adjective "fatuus", "foolish". If I misheard you, I apologize. 00:44:56 carolnypaver: If I say it enough times it MUST be true! 00:47:01 Chad Whitacre: “Long ago, fatuous meant "illusory," after ignis fatuus, the strange light (literally "foolish fire") that sometimes appears at night over marshy ground. The word's Latin root - the fatuus we see in ingis fatuus - is also behind the word infatuate, which once meant "to make foolish," but which now usually means "to inspire with foolish love or admiration." 00:47:21 Chad Whitacre: https://www.merriam-webster.com/words-at-play/top-10-sophisticated-insults/fatuous 00:48:08 Eric Williams: I was right! :P 00:48:27 Natalia Wohar: To Eric's credit, the word “foolish” is in the definition haha 00:48:36 Adrienne DiCicco: But not entirely, Eric! :-P 00:48:46 Eric Ash: Than an additional thousand in thanks for being right 00:48:49 Fr. John (Ivan) Chirovsky: Acquire the spirit of peace and thoudans will be saved around you. 00:48:53 Fr. John (Ivan) Chirovsky: http://orthochristian.com/63166.html 00:49:07 Mary Schott: But isn't is considered foolish to follow that foolish/fake light? 00:49:43 Mary Schott: both meanings are not mutually exclusive, but rather jointly exhaustive 00:49:49 Katharine Memole: Fr. David and Eric are both right. :) 00:58:12 Mary McLeod: This reminds me of the part of the Screwtape Letters where the head demon says that the person must always be drawn to think of the future or the past, but never the present, so that they will miss all the grace God gives in the moment. 01:09:39 Eric Ash: There is a widely quoted Saint Teresa of Calcutta saying that goes, “If you want to bring peace to the whole world, go home and love your family.” Which is actually a paraphrase of a quote from her Nobel Peace Price acceptance speech “And so, my prayer for you is that truth will bring prayer in our homes, and from the foot of prayer will be that we believe that in the poor it is Christ. And we will really believe, we will begin to love. And we will love naturally, we will try to do something. First in our own home, next door neighbor in the country we live, in the whole world.” 01:12:32 carolnypaver: Christ has become a “virtual reality.” 01:12:33 Natalia Wohar: We should start meeting outside in the grass at the Oratory or in front of Cathy 01:12:39 Wayne Mackenzie: To make room for God, we need to learn to say no. So much of our businesses is the fear of our own death. 01:14:47 Scott: Everyone just wants Eric doing penance.

SO I’VE BEEN THINKING ABOUT THE CONVERSATION **THAT WE DID NOT HAVE THE OTHER NIGHT** AND THE DINNER **THAT BILLY DID NOT COOK THE OTHER NIGHT-** WHAT WE DID THO - WAS GO OUT TO ONE OF THE LOCAL CHAIN RESTAURANTS, ALBEIT ONE OF THE BETTER ONES TO HAVE A HAMBURGER. IT WAS KINDA NICE TO HAVE THAT BREAK FROM ALL THAT GOURMET COOKING - ADMIRING BILLS TECHNIQUE IN CREATING OUTSTANDING MEALS, SOME OF WHICH ARE ORIGINAL, SOME OF WHICH ARE JUST BETTER VERSIONS OF THE ONES WE HAVE IN RESTAURANTS. BUT I DIGRESS. IT WAS WHILE EATING THE HAMBURGER THAT I WAS EAVESDROPPING AMONG THE GUESTS SITTING AROUND US WHEN I OVERHEARD AN INTERESTING CONVERSATION ONE MORE SENIOR WOMAN COMPLAINED THAT SHE HADN’T DONE HER MAKEUP, AND THE GENTLEMEN SITTING ACROSS FROM HER ( I CAN ONLY ASSUME THAT WAS HER HUSBAND SAID “SARAH, WHAT DO YOU NEED MAKEUP FOR - WHO ARE YOU TRYING TO ATTRACT AT YOUR AGE. AT WHICH TIME THE OTHER WOMAN AT THE TABLE SAID. WELL HONEY YOU ARE LUCKY - AT YOUR AGE YOU ARE FREE NOW, YOU DON’T NEED MAKEUP ANYMORE. AT WHICH TIME SARAH SAID - ITS NOT THE MAKEUP, BUT THE FACT THAT I FORGOT TO PUT IT ON. THERE WERE SO MANY THINGS TO UNPACK IN THAT CONVERSATION - VANITY, AGING, BRAIN FUNCTION - SO I THOUGHT I’D SEARCH OUT SOME TRULY REMARKABLE PEOPLE TO ADDRESS MANY OF THOSE ISSUES. SO THAT’S WHAT WE’LL YAK ABOUT TODAY.---   Let’s face it people in western society are vain. Looking good is almost mandatory. You walk down the street in the big cities and they are teaming with fit, well clothed people with skin that is silky smooth. But often you see some men and woman, looking a bit disheveled, glasses held up by the tip of the nose. no makeup (not homeless) I just assume that they are intellectuals, professors, scientists etc. WHO DON’T FALL INTO SOCIETIES EXPECTATIONS ON BEAUTY I’ve always wondered what do those people think about Vanity. So I went and searched out someone who could give us a point of view of what the cost of vanity is. # Scilla ELWORTHSCILLA ELWORTHY [Dare to Question Why We Are So Afraid of Getting Older: Scilla Elworthy at TEDxMarrakesh 2012 - YouTube](https://youtu.be/J6zenOjPC1A)https://youtu.be/J6zenOjPC1A is the founder of the Oxford Research Group, a non-governmental Organisation she set up in 1982 to develop effective dialogue between nuclear weapons policy-makers worldwide and their critics. We’ve learned the tricks to help us out. Just ask Brad Zupp, our memory athlete. As a result, common wisdom says that age isn’t too kind to our minds abilities. But can iT brain actually be improving as we age. So why not look for someone who can explain it. Our brains are powerful pieces of machinery that give us the capacity to do amazing things. Unfortunately, common wisdom says that age isn’t too kind to our minds’ abilities. Neuroscientist Thad Polk walks through the actual effects of aging on the human brain and shows that our assumptions might not be so accurate.Dr. Thad Polk has been a member of the University of Michigan psychology faculty since 1996. he was named an Arthur F. In this episode, I interview Gary Yohe, the Huffington Foundation Professor of Economics and Environmental Studies at Wesleyan University. Most of his work has focused on the mitigation and adaptation sides of climate change. A quick reading of Professor Yohe’s bio will give you a sense of what a heavy hitter he is: He is the author of more than 175 scholarly articles, several books, and many contributions to media coverage of climate issues. He has been involved since the early 1990’s with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), he received a share of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize as a senior member. He was a Lead Author for four different chapters in the Third Assessment Report that was published in 2001 and as Convening Lead Author for the last chapter of the contribution of Working Group II to the Fourth Assessment Report that was published in 2007. He was a Convening Lead Author for Chapter 18 of the Contribution of Working Group II to the Fifth Assessment Report on “Detection and Attribution” and a Lead Author for Chapter 1 on “Points of Departure”. Most recently, he has been a contributing author to the IPCC Special Report on a 1.5 degree temperature target for mitigation. Professor Yohe continues to serve as a member of the New York (City) Panel on Climate Change (NPCC); the NPCC was created in 2008 by then Mayor Michael Bloomberg to help the City respond to the risks of climate change. The third iteration of NPCC reports was released on March 15, 2019, at the offices of the New York Academy of Sciences. He has testified before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on the “Hidden (climate change) Cost of Oil” on March 30, 2006, the Senate Energy Committee on the Stern Review on February 14, 2007, and the Senate Banking Committee on “Material Risk from Climate Change and Climate Policy” on October 31, 2007. In April of 2011, Professor Yohe was appointed Vice Chair of the National Climate Assessment Development and Advisory Committee for the Obama Administration by then Under-Secretary of Commerce Jane Lubchenko for the Third National Climate Assessment. The Third National Climate Assessment Report was released by President Obama in a Rose Garden ceremony on May 6, 2014. He served as a member of the National Research Council Committee on America’s Climate Choices: Panel on Adapting to the Impacts of Climate Change between 2008-2011 and the National Research Council Committee on Stabilization Targets for Atmospheric Greenhouse Gas Concentrations that was chaired by Susan Solomon from 2009 through its release in 2010. His more recent activities include the National Academies serving as the Review Editor for their report on the “social cost of carbon” and as a member of their Panel to review the 4th National Climate Assessment. He was also a member of their Panel that prepared the 2017-2027 Decadal Survey for Earth Science and Applications from Space for NASA in 2018. Professor Yohe is currently Co-editor-in-Chief, along with Michael Oppenheimer, of Climatic Change (since August of 2010). His opinion pieces now frequently appear in various national media venues. All of that is a long way of saying Professor Gary Yohe is an expert that has dedicated much of his career towards the fight against climate change, and anything I may accomplish on my journey is standing on his (and people like his) shoulders. In this episode we discuss: Professor Yohe’s history at Wesleyan and how his views of climate change have and have not changed since he entered the field in the early 80’s. His views on the three choices our planet has in response to climate change. How an economist approaches the issue of studying and addressing climate change as well as Professor Yohe’s work with the IPCC. Professor Yohe’s views on the political climate and the role policy and regulations play in climate change, including his thoughts on the Green New Deal. Professor Yohe’s thoughts on Tobacco, Big Oil, President Trump, Bill Gates, Michael Bloomberg, and Michael Bennet. His advice to people who are looking for ways to get involved in the fight against climate change. I hope you enjoy the show!
