Dave Sweeney (pictured) stood on Melbourne's Collins St and told the crowd of about 30 why nuclear power stations are a bad idea and a step backwards for Australia. Dave, a nuclear-free campaigner with the Australian Conservation Foundation, was also the co-founder of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), two things about which he is passionate and subsequently deeply committed. He loves his work and, he believes, it helps pay his "planetary rent" The December 3, Collins St, Melbourne nuclear power station protest during which Dave spoke was organized by the city's office of "Friends of The Earth". The Melbourne office of Friends of the Earth organized a Collins St protest outside a building that was the venue for a Federal Government inquiry into the Liberal National Party's idea that Australia should build and commission seven nuclear power stations throughout the nation. More than 30 people joined the noisy but peaceful demonstration. While passers-by were left with no doubt the nuclear power stations were too expensive, too dangerous and too slow, those attending had the chance to listen to several exciting, articulate and far-seeing speakers, including two people from the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize-winning International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), Associate Professor Tilman Ruff (pictured) and Dave Sweeney who is also with the Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF). Representatives of the Melbourne-based "Lighter Footprints" and the "Kooyong Climate Change Alliance" and a passionate Danae Bosley from the Victorian Trades Hall Council also spoke.

In late June this year, Mirrar Traditional owners were granted freehold title over the town of Jabiru, under the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act, the first of its kind in Australia. This fight for land rights, has been led by senior traditional owner Yvonne Margarula, and begun in 1978 when the town was built on what was then Crown land without the involvement or permission of Traditional Owners. The native title claim was lodged by Yvonne Margarula in 1998, which was finally decided by the Federal Court in 2016 after one of Australia's longest-running native title matters. This week we hear from Corben Mudjandi, a Mirarr Traditional Owner and nephew of Yvonne, who tells us about the response of the community and the plans for Jabiru now that it's been handed back. While covid-19 understandably dominates the headlines, important environmental news risks being marginalised. Take the annual Australia-wide State of Environment Report, declaring 2019 “probably the worst year in a century.” Conservationists warn governments are also weakening environmental protections, exactly at a time when the voters are too busy with a pandemic to notice. Understorey dips into a pre-covid example, examining emails and letters obtained through Freedom of Information about the Yeelirrie uranium mine approval. Hours before the 2019 election was called, from her Geraldton electoral office the Minister for the Environment signed off the necessary federal approvals for Cameco to mine uranium until 2043. Apart from casting aside scientific concern for threatened species protections, the Minister took into account the advice given by a Resources Minister. The government's current review into the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 could widen the democratic deficit. Dave Sweeney from the Australian Conservation Foundation hopes people will make submissions,[now open](https://environment.au.citizenspace.com/epbc-review/epbc-act-review-submission-discussion-paper/) until April 17th, to call for more EPBC independence. This week on the show we'll be looking to the Northern Territory as they edge one step closer to being nuclear free! On June 11th Energy Resources Australia announced that they would no longer be pursuing a feasibility study for the Ranger 3 Deeps project which they had hoped would extend the life of the Ranger uranium mine in Kakadu National Park. Dave Sweeney and Lauren Mellor join us with that story. This announcement comes one year after the incredible win by Muckaty Traditional Owners and their supporters who campaigned for 9 years to stop the imposition of a nuclear waste dump in the Northern Territory. June 19th marked one year since the Commonwealth Government and Northern Lands Council withdrew the proposal mid way through a Federal Court Case that challenged the nomination of Muckaty Station as a site for a National radioactive Waste Dump. We hear some reflections from Muckaty Traditional Owner Dianne Stokes and a poem by Isobel Phillips titled 'Our Land'. The poem was recorded at the time of the initial celebrations.

On January 14, 2010 we hosted Online Impact 2010 in the Springfield Technical Community College (STCC) Technology Park. This was the second business and industry Online Impact event held at STCC - we had the first one in June 2009. Both events focused on the use of social media sites like Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook to reach out to customers and prospects. We had an excellent half-day of panels and workshop sessions that focused on social media tips and tactics. This podcast is a recording of the first panel, moderated by Dave Sweeney from viz-bang.com. I won’t introduce the panelists – Dave does it as part of the podcast. We’re already planning the next Online Impact event – watch our website at ictcenter.org for details.
