Laura and I knew each other at the height of the Dot Com bubble in San Francisco in the late 1990's. We hadn't seen each other for over 20+ years and it was time to catch up… Why not do an interview. Laura is smart, a deep and thoughtful thinker, and successful to boot. She is a full on self starter with a whole bunch of life story and plenty of insight. We have a ton of fun and you get plenty of opinions towards the end. Enjoy! Show notes:Laura got to see me fall in love… And it's fun to relive that moment. Dawn and I get to make amends… But back to Laura - She gets reflective on her old divorce and the time it takes to heal that… Laura plays coy on the exact time frame, but suffice it to say it was back in the 90's lol. Any opportunity to go back and “amend” some of that? Yes and “Please don't contact me again?”. Her answer is awesome :). And her working through remorse of “things should have been different”. Laura and I were in the heart of the 2000 era Dot Com bubble. Her time with “RedHat” stock options… Our reflections of the bubble! Stuck with a mortgage and no job, then Kinko's which doesn't cover the mortgage. I was willing to do anything to survive because I've been on my own since I was 17. She finds a suicide note left on the copy machine… It was a desperate time. Got a Nolo Press, “How to start a CA corporation book”… And within a couple of months of telling the universe "I am this" I got a stroke of luck…”. I was very fortunate, things boomed after that. After 8 or 9 years, kinda burnt out. Trying to create a different business paradigm… win win win. It's hard to stop on your own when the money's good. You're praying for it to all fall apart. “Please god get me out of this!”. I had to keep doing it because of a bigger plan that was clearly out of my control… This life is rented, none of this is mine, I didn't want any of this and it just kept coming. Her mom gets sick somewhere in there. (Mom passed of cancer in 2006). “Honey, when are you gonna have enough chestnuts?” That's a good question… Any other mom nuggets from that time? Oh yes there is.Another stroke of luck, she builds a little widget for her company… Laura's pretty smart. “So now I have this little software company…”I have lived in the $400 a month apartment cockroach infested apartment. Are we just white people with white people problems? She brings up some good thought provoking questions and answers to my question.Always be open… Be grateful for what is. Try to help as much as we can. Drafting a Special Needs Trust is only the foundation of sound planning. On that foundation are additional documents and steps to take. In this episode we discuss two. First, the memorandum of intent which gives direction on wishes and day to day care. This episode covers what to put in the memo of intent, ensuring it is easy to find, being bold yet discreet in wishes that others may not like, and why you should not store it in your safe at home. The second consideration discussed is the importance of funding the trust via retitling to avoid probate. For Episode 6 of the Trusted Advisor Mortgages and More Podcast we have Jose Zavala of ZTX Advisors. Jose is a financial services and business expert. He is one of the founding members of the JX4 Masterminds podcast which is now well into its second season and he was also one of the stars at the first Accounting and Social Media Symposium held in Oklahoma City in August, 2019 To reach out to Jose online: https://www.ztxadvisors.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ztxadvisors/ Facebook: https://fb.me/jzavala03 LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jzavala03/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/jzavala03 More about your host: My name is Russell McDonald and my company’s name is TRADMOR. TRADMOR stands for Trusted Advisor Mortgages and I chose this name for my company because my focus in mortgage lending is working with CPAs, Enrolled Agents, Financial Planners and any other Trusted Advisor Financial Professionals to help them provide home loans for their clients. I’ve been a mortgage broker in the San Francisco Bay Area since 1992 and also founded a software company in 1994 which is still up and running. I have invented several different software systems that have been brought to market with varying levels of success over the years. My two most productive projects are called Cypher and RateAnalyzer and these systems have been used by more than 500 different independent financial professionals to provide thousands of home loans for their clients over the past 20 years or so. In 1998 I applied for several patents for these and other systems, as well as seeking patent protection for the ways we anticipated the technology progressing down the road. I actually applied for patents covering online mortgage loan application systems before the first online mortgage application was done in the United States. I wrote all the original Provisional Patent Applications myself and started seeking competent legal help a little less than a year later. Since that time I’ve been awarded six patents for the systems and methods I invented and to be honest it is a miracle that I was able to write the Provisional Patent Applications on my own (using a NOLO PRESS book) that were able to turn into something useful. I would never advise an independent inventor to take on that task on their own. You know the common belief that practicing something for 10,000 hours makes you an expert? I’ve been doing this all day plus nights and weekends for more than 10,000 DAYS and this has made me an expert in mortgage finance, real estate and credit issues. You know that old show “What NOT To Wear”? Well this episode of MYOTBiz is the OT business podcast version of that show. Here's my list of what NOT to do when starting your business. A few of these I learned from experience (you'll hear about my 10K mistake…I'm SO embarrassed to admit this one…and honestly, thought about editing it out of the recorded podcast more than once. But I kept it in to stick by my promise to always be honest with you all, even if it makes me not look good.) (Links are Amazon affiliate links- MYOTBiz is not monetized right now- it is a labor of love, so if you purchase any of these books, please go through the link! Gives me a tiny bit of income at no additional cost to you. Thanks!) Drum roll please…..the 9 Things NOT To Do When Starting Your Business: Don't offer too many types of services. The riches are in the niches, folks...and so is your sanity. Start by offering ONE really good service and DON'T start another until that one is successful (or totally bombs). Don't hire quickly. Sometimes we are growing (a good thing!) and get desperate for help. Hiring quickly just to fill the opening will usually be twice as much work in the long run. Slow growth is not bad. Don't think you can do your books on your own. YOU CAN'T. Run, do not walk, to hire the nearest bookkeeper or accountant who can help manage your finances. Don't price your services too low. People value what they pay for. We are all helpers by nature and want to help people. If you want to give away services, offer scholarships...but keep your prices high so people will value your services. Don't pay for an expensive website or logo. I spent way too much on mine and almost immediately regretted it, even though I love it. There is no way to tell if it was helpful to my business, but in retrospect, I think learning good copywriting is MUCH more beneficial than a pretty website or logo. Read “Building a StoryBrand” by Donald Miller and “This Book Will Teach You How to Write Better” by Neville Medhora. DIY website builders work great. I recommend Squarespace for aesthetics and for ease of use. Don't wait to manage your cash flow. I've said it once and I'll say it again: read Profit First by Mike Michalowicz. WISH I had done this when starting out!! Don't buy expensive equipment you don't truly need. Constraints make us more creative. Ask yourself: “Do I really NEED this?” before every business purchase. (Which, you might notice, I SHOULD have done before paying designers for a fancy website and logo.) :) Don't be afraid to consult a lawyer. You must ask a lawyer if you're in doubt about any legal issue. Get a good referral to an honest lawyer, ask your question(s), cough up the $300/hour, and move on with confidence that you're legally in the clear. Here's the NOLO Press book I used to set up my California corporation. Don't be afraid to spend money on a business coach when you are just starting out. This was extremely helpful to me in the early years (and NOW…just did a session last week with a business consultant to advise me about scaling and expanding my business to multiple locations in different states.)
Tonight's special guest is Stephanie Mann from the San Francisco area, a returning NAASCA family member who's an author and crime & violence prevention specialist. Her life's mission started in 1969 in her hometown of Orinda, California, where she worked with community leaders and helped spearhead a citywide crime-prevention program. In 1975, with the support of California's first lady at the time, Nancy Reagan, and the California Youth Authority, Stephanie and Shirley Henke published Alternatives to Fear: Guidelines to Safer Neighborhoods, a guidebook which helped popularize the 'Neighborhood Watch' Program nationwide. Ms. Mann eventually saw the need to co-author another book. In 1993, she wrote Safe Homes Safe Neighborhoods: Stopping Crime where You Live (Nolo Press) with Mary Claire Blakeman. Stephanie's work continued to expand in the 1990s. “I realized child safety needed to be the primary focus for communities,” she says. "My work with the homeless in Oakland exposed me to the legacy of childhood neglect, abuse and social isolation." Street Safe Kids was published in 2000 as a ten-step guide to give parents practical tools to help young people become safe and spiritually strong. Stephanie continues to speak out on the need for individuals to take responsibility for neighborhood and community safety to protect children. (Please also see: www.pinterest.com/safekidsnow). She's been working nationally to strengthen families and and keep cities safe ever since!
In this episode, we get to meet stroke survivor Peter Evans and his wife Ria. Peter survived massive hemorrhagic stroke in 2017 that left him with cognitive challenges and partial vision loss. It turned his and Ria's lives upside down. Their attitudes are really amazing though. They've taken this horrible event and are determined to extract every piece of value from it that they can. Peter, with Ria's support, is using his writing skills to drive increased support for stroke survivors. He's becoming a regular guest contributor to the Strokecast blog. He's become a supporter and advocate for support groups, and Ria is speaking out about the importance of advanced directives and other documentation so spouses and partners can most effectively support one another in times of crisis. Craniectomy In this episode, we do talk a little bit about finding Peter's skull. For those who may not be familiar with removing part of the skull as treatment, it's not uncommon in the treatment of stroke -- especially hemorrhagic stroke. In the case of a serious brain bleed, the blood can create additional pressure on the brain. Additionally, the trauma of the stroke can cause brain swelling. This results in too much pressure on the brain tissue as it gets pressed against the skull. One way to relieve that pressure is to remove part of the person's skull. When the swelling subsides, surgeons can put that part of the skull back in place. Often survivors who have temporarily had part of their skull removed will need to wear a custom helmet to prevent other injuries. Long time listeners may remember my conversation with Whitney Morean at strokecast.com/Whitney about her own experience with craniectomy and cranioplasty. Bio 54-year-old Peter Evans, originally from Long Island, New York, currently resides in the Marina del Rey section of Los Angeles where he lives with his Wife Ria and an incredibly headstrong Yorkshire Terrier, they call Geronimo. Peter had a massive hemorrhagic stroke in 2017 an event he says nearly killed him but which, strangely, he acknowledges has helped bring Ria and him even closer together as a couple, reinvigorating their marriage and leaving Peter a kinder, more grateful and overall happier person. Like many others, Peter first came to LA hoping to break into acting in film and television, and it was that which brought Peter and Ria together when they worked together on her cable public access TV show and a feature film they both produced on the set of which he says they fell in love. “She may have stolen my heart,” he says, “but what she gave me back in love and support over these past 20 years, on balance I feel like I’m a millionaire—Definitely feel like I came out a huge winner on that deal, the day I met Ria!” Growing tired of endless auditions and poverty wages as an actor, Peter decided to move into the corporate world when an old college friend of his said, “Hey, I know you’re still into that acting thing, but there’s a job here at my company I think you’d be perfect for and really love.” And boy did he! He got to use his French Language skills and travel internationally quite extensively as he worked as the project manager of a small international team where he helped launch the company’s many international Web sites across Europe, Australia and Japan. Peter continues to this day contributing on-line content for Stroke resources and putting his years of Project Management to good use, paying it forward to all his fellow stroke survivors. Advanced Directives and Power of Attorney An Advanced Directive is typically a document you complete describing the kind of healthcare or resuscitation that you want (or don't want) should you become incapacitated. A Power of Attorney is typically a document that you sign authorizing another person to make medical, financial, or other decisions for you if you are not able to in a particular context. These are important documents to think about and execute before you need them. You can find some resources in the links below so you can explore them further. Many hospitals are happy to supply some of these documents as well. Or consult an attorney or lawyer practicing in your community. Regulations can vary state-by-state and can impact spousal rights, domestic partner rights, and other family configurations. There are lots of templates available so make sure you pursue the right path for yourself and your family. Program Note You may have noticed that this episode is coming out earlier in the week than normal. Over the next few months, I plan to increase my posting frequency as I work with some additional content contributors. I think we'll be hearing from Peter again. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the additional content. You can post in the comments below or email Bill@Strokecast.com. Hack of the Half Week Peter's hack is to be kind to yourself. A brain injury changes things. It turns life upside down. You may not be able to do everything you used to do. You may not be able to think as clearly or quickly as you used to. You may not be able to pursue the same intense pace of life you did before. That's OK. Cut yourself some slack. You're going to need more sleep. Get it, and don't feel guilty about it. You have permission to be kind to yourself. Working Class Audio #157 with Dana Jae!!! Dana Jae's career as an audio engineer spans 34 years since the first day she began to record and mix songs on her Tascam PortaStudio in the early 80's while attending college at UC Berkeley. She formed several of her own bands performing and recording until 1988 when she discovered that the "behind-the-scenes" tech realm was much more to her liking. Dana then began a career as a live sound engineer and has toured extensively throughout the U.S. and Europe as front-of-house sound engineer for a multitude of bands on various record labels and have been a staff engineer at the venerable Bottom of the Hill nightclub since their inception in 1991. Dana has owned and maintained a live sound production company since 1989 under the moniker dcj Productions, that has provided sound to the Bay Area community (mostly in the non-profit sector) in both large-scale, outdoor sound events as well as nightclubs and music halls. In 1991, she started recording bands on an 8-track Tascam TSR-8 analog tape recorder and moved into the digital realm in 1993 to 16-tracks of Alesis ADAT in her home studio. In 1995, Dana advanced to using Pro Tools and has been recording exclusively digital ever since, combining audio skills in sound for film as a location recordist as well as in post-production sound design and mixing. Dana says she still prefers the sonic rapture of "strictly analog" in live sound mixing, however. Dana co-owned and was the President of APG Records & APG Studios, a record label and recording studio from 1999 - 2004 which had a distribution deal through EMI. In 2001, Dana was hired to the part-time faculty at City College of San Francisco in the Broadcast Electronics Media Arts department where she has taught Digital Media Skills , Basic Audio Production, Digital Audio Production , Sound Recording Studio, Sound For Visual Media , Advanced Sound Recording, Sound Reinforcement, Audio for the Web , Video for the Web ,Field Video Production, classes in sound design, audio for animation and games, music video, and computer applications at Laney College in Oakland, CA, Art Institute of California-San Francisco, and Globe Recording Institute in San Francisco. About this Interview: I've known Dana Jae since the late 90's. We crossed paths working at local San Francisco pro audio dealers Audio Images and Cutting Edge Audio and also worked briefly together at a small record company. Since then we have stayed in touch over the years and recently ran into each other at an audio event where we planned this interview. We discuss how Dana got into audio and her journey through live sound, studio sound, film sound, pro audio retail and her current gig at City College of San Francisco. Enjoy! Intellectual property attorney Judith Szepesi (@Judith_IP) discusses what Elecia (and startups) need to know about patenting. Judith is a founding partner at HIPLegal, LLP. They will soon have a guide to addressing patent trolls (link to be added when available). Ask Patents - a Stack Exchange site to discuss patents (and patent trolls) Judith and Elecia both recommend the Patent It Yourself book from NOLO Press (always get the latest of this). Even if you seek legal counsel, you'll have a better idea of what should happen through the process. [Note: we got to talking after the show and Judith reminded me that if you do research for other people's patents, you should track that because you have an obligation to tell the patent office about whatever you are aware of that is relevant. -El]
