Welcome to the ENT!Embrace a little more gratitude, give a little more to the causes you are passionate about, with Nathan Merrill and Karl Frank. A lot of charitable planning centers around tax planning--if I give this, then I will save that in taxes. But rather than thinking of it as a quid pro quo, Nathan encourages us to come back to a higher level. "Detached or disinterested generosity," and the other legal definitions of charitable giving, is a good way to begin. And to whom do I want to make a gift? For many business owners, their team-mates are among the most important people in their lives. The laws make it hard to give to an employee any gift over $25. Buying a table at a charitable event is another way to make a gift, that is important. But the "how" we give is not as challenging as the why we give. Asheville, NC, is a part of the world that is struggling today, perhaps this is a great way to organize your thoughts. It is important to line up your impact with your tax deduction, and not plan around the tax benefits. You may want some recognition today even if the charity does not receive money until a later date. Included in our discussion are some of these strategies, including trusts, qualified distributions, etc. Learn about where to go to get an idea of charities to donate to. And finally, we discuss the importance of planning, because "when your values are clear, your decisions are easy."Resources mentioned in today's podcast:Foundation SourceMore than Money 360Die with ZeroGo Tax Free with a Charity White PaperAs always, it is good to have an expert on your side. Buying a home is harder than ever before. Young people are waiting longer and longer. What does that mean for our economy? Wage growth is being outpaced by housing costs, so where are we really? Oh by the way, cars and healthcare and other costs are expensive too! The data is skewed by Covid, so what is really going on? Are the next generation potential homebuyers really all that worse off or are they culturally different, with different values? And what is going on with DOGE—does government spending cuts hurt the economy? What are the states doing? What are the numbers, not the prognosticators, saying? Prognosticators talk about inflation so often, it may lead you to ask, “Is anything disinflationary (and is that good)?” Where are we at with the unemployment number and is that a reliable number? And learn why jobless claims, produced weekly, are a reliable indicator, as volatile as they are. And the ultimate question, maybe, is America OK?Expert Network team provides free consultations. Dr. Olivardia is a clinical psychologist, lecturer in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and Clinical Associate at McLean Hospital. He maintains a private practice in Lexington, MA, where he specializes in the treatment of ADHD, executive functioning issues, and issues that face students with learning differences. He is a recognized expert in the treatment of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), eating disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). He is on the Professional Advisory Boards for Children and Adults with ADHD (CHADD) and The Attention Deficit Disorder Association (ADDA), as well as sits on the Scientific Advisory Board for ADDitude and the Expert Network for Understood. He is co-author of The Adonis Complex, a book which details the various manifestations of body image problems in males. He has appeared in publications such as Time, GQ, and Rolling Stone, and has been featured on Good Morning America, Extra, CBS This Morning, CNN, and VH1. He has spoken on numerous radio and webinar shows and presents at many talks and conferences around the country. He also has lived experience as someone with ADHD and learning differences and a parent of two teenagers with ADHD and Dyslexia. Key Takeaways: 1. ADHD and Eating Disorders: ADHD impacts all life domains, with symptoms like impulsivity, executive dysfunction, and high sensory needs that influence eating behaviors. For many with ADHD, eating is driven by sensory-seeking, and the brain's need for stimulation can lead to unhealthy eating patterns. ADHD is often associated with binge eating and food impulsivity, influenced by genetic and neurological factors, such as dopamine dysregulation and low levels of GABA, the neurotransmitter related to inhibition.   2. Genetics, Food Culture, and Neurobiology: Dr. Olivardia shares how his family's love for food shaped his relationship with eating and sensory stimulation. ADHD brains often experience high stimulation from ultra-processed foods, which can drive cravings and overeating due to dopamine's role in the brain's reward system.   3. Executive Function Challenges in Meal Planning: ADHD can make meal planning, shopping, and cooking overwhelming. Structured lists, simple recipes, and single-pot meals can help manage mealtime more effectively for those with ADHD. Regular, scheduled meals prevent intense late-night eating often seen in ADHD.   4. Medication and Treatment Options: Stimulant medications, like Vyvanse (FDA-approved for binge eating disorder), help some individuals with ADHD manage impulsivity around food by improving focus and reducing cravings. Proper medication can significantly enhance treatment outcomes for ADHD-related eating challenges. For individuals who don't respond to medication, behavioral strategies such as maintaining regular sleep schedules, exercising, and using music for grounding can be effective.   5. Binge Eating and Addiction Risks:  Dr. Olivardia highlights the link between ADHD and addiction, including food addiction. ADHD brains metabolize glucose differently, leading to cravings for high-sugar foods. Education on how ADHD brains work can alleviate feelings of weakness or shame in managing eating behaviors.   6. Self-Acceptance and Neurodiversity: Dr. Olivardia encourages embracing ADHD and neurodiversity, emphasizing that people with ADHD often excel in creative and mission-driven fields. ADHD challenges can become strengths, leading to fulfilling, meaningful work and connections.   Resources: • CHADD (Children and Adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) – A leading organization for ADHD support and resources: https://chadd.org   • Attitude Magazine – A resource for ADHD insights and content: https://www.additudemag.com   The content of our show is educational only. Today's Building Block: Work (yes, work...) What makes transitions so hard to navigate?  Herminia Ibarra, a thought leader on leadership and career development and author of Working Identity, shares her insights on creating new options as you prepare for your transition to retirement. Herminia Ibarra joins us from London. ________________________ Comments? Leave a voice message here _________________________ Bio Herminia Ibarra is the Charles Handy Professor of Organisational Behaviour at London Business School. Prior to joining LBS, she served on the INSEAD and Harvard Business School faculties. An authority on leadership and career development, Thinkers 50 ranks Herminia among the top management thinkers in the world. She is a member of the World Economic Forum's Expert Network, a judge for the Financial Times Business Book of the Year Award, a Fellow of the British Academy, and the 2018 recipient of the Academy of Management's Scholar-Practitioner Award for her research's contribution to management practice. Herminia is a member of the London Business School governing body. She chaired the Harvard Business School Visiting Committee, which reports to the university's board of overseers, from 2012 to 2016, having been a member since 2009, and served on the INSEAD board of directors. A native of Cuba, Herminia received her MA and PhD from Yale University, where she was a National Science Fellow. --- A second and updated edition of her groundbreaking book Working Identity was recently published by Harvard Business Review Press. Whether as a daydream or a spoken desire, nearly all of us have entertained the notion of reinventing ourselves. Feeling unfulfilled, burned out, or just plain unhappy with what we're doing, we long to make that leap into the unknown. In this powerful book, Herminia presents a new model for career reinvention that flies in the face of everything we've learned from ‘career experts'. While common wisdom holds that we must first know what we want to do before we can act, Ibarra argues that this advice is backward. Knowing, she says, is the result of doing and experimenting. Based on her in-depth research on professionals and managers in transition, Ibarra outlines an active process of career reinvention that leverages three ways of ‘working identity': experimenting with new professional activities, interacting in new networks of people, and making sense of what is happening to us in light of emerging possibilities. Through engrossing stories, Ibarra reveals a set of guidelines that all successful reinventions share. She explores specific ways that hopeful career changers of any background can. A call to the dreamer in each of us, Working Identity explores the process for crafting a more fulfilling future. ________________________ For More on Herminia Ibarra Website Working Identity by Herminia Ibarra Articles ________________________ Check out our Best Books on Retirement ________________________ Mentioned in This Podcast Episode The HBR Guide to Designing Your Retirement ________________________ Podcast Episodes You May Like The Portfolio Life - Christina Wallace  Are You Ready for The New Long Life? – Andrew Scott Retire Happy - Dr. Catherine Sanderson Why Retirement is About Much More Than Money – Ted Kaufman & Bruce Hiland _________________________ Wise Quotes  On Transitions "Transitions necessarily imply a loss of a sense of identity, a loss of something that has been meaningful and valuable. You're moving away from someone you've been, but the future you isn't clear yet, or the future destination or the next role isn't clear yet. So you're kind of hanging in limbo and that's very uncomfortable. We live in a world in which certainty is valued, know who you are and the nature of this process and part of what makes it productive is questioning who you are, but that's necessarily uncomfortable.

I'm so excited to bring you one of the very few repeat guests I've had on the show today, Laura Mayer. Laura was on the podcast about 2 years ago in Episode 78 when she talked about her courageous decision to closer her traditional business without any idea of what she was going to do next, and has spent the past several years leveraging her network and key relationships to explode her brand as a true expert in her space, develop a wildly successful growth marketing and connection business and is now the author of a brand new book Win Win: How to Create Mutually Beneficial Relationships that Grow Your Business.  Laura Meyer is growth marketing consultant and powerhouse connector - as a serial entrepreneur who has scaled multiple six- and seven figure online and offline companies over the last twenty years, Laura knows first-hand the power of relationships and their importance to business growth. Several years ago after making the hard decision to close her traditional business, without having any idea what she was going to do next. Because of that network and the relationships she had built, she was able to re-emerge as an expert of experts, a strategic marketing consultant and fractional chief marketing officer to some of the country's top influencers. In addition, she co-founded the Advance Women's Expert Network with Kelly Roach, helping hundreds of women all over the world develop powerful expert brands through community, connection and co-collaboration with others who share in their same values and spirit.   Show Notes: [2:56] - Laura made the decision to walk away from an incredibly successful photography business and franchise to start over. [4:59] - After a while in this business, Laura's intuition was that this wasn't right for her anymore. [7:30] - Sometimes we feel like we have to be cheesy and spammy, but to grow and scale a business, it isn't necessary. [8:43] - One of the hardest decisions to make is to stick it out or walk away. [10:31] - Ask yourself what a 5-year or 10-year version of you would think about these decisions. [12:24] - Genuine relationships are now what makes the difference, when in previous years, it was very much a click-and-go process. [14:18] - For a lot of people, we think we can develop a relationship to have an immediate return. [16:04] - In a lot of ways, we are experiencing a credibility crisis. [17:16] - Benevolence is when you want what is best for the person in front of you whether it benefits you or not and it is the unsung hero of credibility. [20:01] - People can tell when you are just searching for them to benefit you. [22:19] - It is definitely a long game, but it is true that real relationships work. [24:16] - What are some of the mistakes Laura sees with relationship building? [26:10] - Having a small audience is not necessarily a bad thing. [28:24] - Everyone wants to be partnering with the bigger person but being someone's biggest and loudest fan benefits everyone. [32:19] - Everyone is unique. The US central bank has pushed interest rates to the highest level in almost 15 years as it fights to rein in soaring prices in the world's biggest economy. The rate has gone up by 0.75 percentage points for the third time in a row. We hear from Tom Sullivan from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. He is the Vice President of Small Business policy. Also on the programme, we talk to Randal Kroszner an economist at The University of Chicago Booth School of Business and former member of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors. Analysts predict the Bank of Japan will maintain its ultra-low interest rates despite pressure on the country's currency. Yoko Ishikura is a Professor Emeritus, Hitotsubashi University and currently a member of the World Economic Forum's Expert Network in Tokyo shares her thoughts. Let's turn to one country where a stronger dollar could be bad news for its economy and is about to make interest rate decisions of its own. And we go to Brazil to get reaction to The Central Bank of Brazil's decision to keep its interest rate at 13.75 per cent. Spandana Singh: Content Moderation Beyond the US Social media platforms have played a central role in recent crises in the U.S., such as the Capitol Hill insurrection of 2021, and in Europe, such as Russia's invasion of Ukraine. These developments underscore the power that unelected, big technology companies wield on the geopolitical landscape.    But the discussion around how social media companies function in the global south, such as their impact on the proliferation of Hindu nationalism in India or state violence against the Rohingya people of Myanmar, remains largely absent from policy discussions in the west.    New America's Spandi Singh joined Joe Miller this week to discuss her current work – not just to prevent the spread of mis- and dis- information regarding upcoming elections in the U.S. – but also to foster a tech policy discussion that includes the unique perspectives of marginalized voices abroad.   Bio Spandi Singh works at New America's Open Technology Institute where she leads a portfolio of work focused on content moderation, disinformation, algorithmic accountability, and transparency. Singh is also currently a Non-Resident Fellow at the Esya Centre in New Delhi and a member of the World Economic Forum's Expert Network.   Linked In Resources Open Technology Institute at New America Judging Platform Responses to Election Mis- and Disinformation, New America (2022), https://www.newamerica.org/oti/in-the-news/judging-platform-responses-to-election-mis-and-disinformation/ (last visited Sep 19, 2022).

The report says some countries will fall into recession in 2023, but that it's too early to say for sure whether there will be a global recession. We get more analysis from one of the report's authors, Franziska Ohnsorge. The UK's finance ministry is considering removing limits on bankers' bonuses. How will this affect its financial services industry, and and is the government right to do this in a cost of living crisis? We speak to Pete Hahn, emeritus professor at the London Institute of Banking and Finance. Kenya's new President William Ruto has scrapped a petrol subsidy, and retail prices are now at an all-time high. The BBC's Charles Gitonga reports from Nairobi. And rapper Kanye West wants to terminate his partnership with the retailer Gap. He says Gap hasn't fulfilled the terms of their contract, which was aimed at breathing new life into its brand. Julie Zerbo, founder of The Fashion Law website, analyses what this will mean for both parties. Will Bain is joined throughout the programme by Paddy Hirsch, contributing editor at NPR in Los Angeles, and by Yoko Ishikura, professor emeritus at Hitotsubashi University and currently a member of the World Economic Forum's Expert Network, who's in Tokyo.
